Networks of interactions evolve in many different domains. They tend to have topological characteristics in common, possibly due to common factors in the way the networks grow and develop. It has been recently suggested that one such common characteristic is the presence of a hierarchically modular organization. In this paper, we describe a new algorithm for the detection and quantification of hierarchical modularity, and demonstrate that the yeast protein-protein interaction network does have a hierarchically modular organization. We further show that such organization is evident in artificial networks produced by computational evolution using a gene duplication operator, but not in those developing via preferential attachment of new nodes to highly connected existing nodes. Different components of driving skill relate to accident involvement in different ways. For instance, while hazard-perception skill has been found to predict accident involvement, vehicle-control skill has not. We found that drivers rated themselves superior to both their peers and the average driver on 18 components of driving skill (N = 181 respondents). These biases were greater for hazard-perception skills than for either vehicle-control skills or driving skill in general. Also, ratings of hazard-perception skill related to self-perceived safety after overall skill was controlled for. We suggest that although drivers appear to appreciate the role of hazard perception in safe driving, any safety benefit to be derived from this appreciation may be undermined by drivers' inflated opinions of their own hazard-perception skill. We also tested the relationship between illusory beliefs about driving skill and risk taking and looked at ways of manipulating drivers' illusory beliefs.

In this article, recent developments in the creation of web content, such as blogs and wikis, are surveyed with a focus on their role in technological and social innovation. The innovations associated with blogs and wikis are important in themselves, and the process of creative collaboration they represent is becoming central to technological progress in general. The internet and the world wide web, which have driven much of the economic growth of the past decade, were produced in this way. Standard assumptions about the competitive nature of innovation are undersupported in the new environment. If governments want to encourage the maximum amount of innovation in social production, they need to de-emphasize competition and emphasize creativity and cooperation.

With its implications for vaccine discovery, the accurate prediction of T cell epitopes is one of the key aspirations of computational vaccinology. We have developed a robust multivariate statistical method, based on partial least squares, for the quantitative prediction of peptide binding to major histocompatibility complexes (MHC), the principal checkpoint on the antigen presentation pathway. As a service to the immunobiology community, we have made a Perl implementation of the method available via a World Wide Web server. We call this server MHCPred. Access to the server is freely available from the URL: http://www.jenner.ac.uk/MHCPred. We have exemplified our method with a model for peptides binding to the common human MHC molecule HLA-B*3501.

Accurate T-cell epitope prediction is a principal objective of computational vaccinology. As a service to the immunology and vaccinology communities at large, we have implemented, as a server on the World Wide Web, a partial least squares-base multivariate statistical approach to the quantitative prediction of peptide binding to major histocom-patibility complexes (MHC), the key checkpoint on the antigen presentation pathway within adaptive,cellular immunity. MHCPred implements robust statistical models for both Class I alleles (HLA-A*0101, HLA-A*0201, HLA-A*0202, HLA-A*0203,HLA-A*0206, HLA-A*0301, HLA-A*1101, HLA-A*3301, HLA-A*6801, HLA-A*6802 and HLA-B*3501) and Class II alleles (HLA-DRB*0401, HLA-DRB*0401and HLA-DRB* 0701).

This paper presents an adaptive method using genetic algorithm to modify user’s queries, based on relevance judgments. This algorithm was adapted for the three well-known documents collections (CISI, NLP and CACM). The method is shown to be applicable to large text collections, where more relevant documents are presented to users in the genetic modification. The algorithm shows the effects of applying GA to improve the effectiveness of queries in IR systems. Further studies are planned to adjust the system parameters to improve its effectiveness. The goal is to retrieve most relevant documents with less number of non-relevant documents with respect to user's query in information retrieval system using genetic algorithm.
