The motivation for this paper is to present procedures for automatically creating idealised finite element models from the 3D CAD solid geometry of a component. The procedures produce an accurate and efficient analysis model with little effort on the part of the user. The technique is applicable to thin walled components with local complex features and automatically creates analysis models where 3D elements representing the complex regions in the component are embedded in an efficient shell mesh representing the mid-faces of the thin sheet regions. As the resulting models contain elements of more than one dimension, they are referred to as mixed dimensional models. Although these models are computationally more expensive than some of the idealisation techniques currently employed in industry, they do allow the structural behaviour of the model to be analysed more accurately, which is essential if appropriate design decisions are to be made. Also, using these procedures, analysis models can be created automatically whereas the current idealisation techniques are mostly manual, have long preparation times, and are based on engineering judgement. In the paper the idealisation approach is first applied to 2D models that are used to approximate axisymmetric components for analysis. For these models 2D elements representing the complex regions are embedded in a 1D mesh representing the midline of the cross section of the thin sheet regions. Also discussed is the coupling, which is necessary to link the elements of different dimensionality together. Analysis results from a 3D mixed dimensional model created using the techniques in this paper are compared to those from a stiffened shell model and a 3D solid model to demonstrate the improved accuracy of the new approach. At the end of the paper a quantitative analysis of the reduction in computational cost due to shell meshing thin sheet regions demonstrates that the reduction in degrees of freedom is proportional to the square of the aspect ratio of the region, and for long slender solids, the reduction can be proportional to the aspect ratio of the region if appropriate meshing algorithms are used.

Computer simulations of (i) a [C(12)mim][Tf2N] film of nanometric thickness squeezed at kbar pressure by a piecewise parabolic confining potential reveal a mesoscopic in-plane density and composition modulation reminiscent of mesophases seen in 3D samples of the same room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL). Near 2D confinement, enforced by a high normal load, as well as relatively long aliphatic chains are strictly required for the mesophase formation, as confirmed by computations for two related systems made of (ii) the same [C(12)mim][Tf2N] adsorbed at a neutral solid surface and (iii) a shorter-chain RTIL ([C(4)mim][Tf2N]) trapped in the potential well of part i. No in-plane modulation is seen for ii and iii. In case ii, the optimal arrangement of charge and neutral tails is achieved by layering parallel to the surface, while, in case iii, weaker dispersion and packing interactions are unable to bring aliphatic tails together into mesoscopic islands, against overwhelming entropy and Coulomb forces. The onset of in-plane mesophases could greatly affect the properties of long-chain RTILs used as lubricants.

The mechanism of CO oxidation reactions over undoped and gold-doped CuMnOX (Hopcalite) catalysts has been examined using a temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor Gold doping has been found to increase the activity of the mixed oxide catalyst significantly however using consecutive pulsing TAP experiments the presence of gold was not found to affect the contribution of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism Conversely gold doping was found to promote the Mars van Krevelen mechanism Using CO and O-2 multi-pulse TAP experiments the gold was found to modify the catalyst surface such that it stores much more oxygen that is active for the CO oxidation The CO multi-pulse experiments indicated that two distinct types of active oxygen species were found to be involved in the CO oxidation One type was observed in a similar amount on both doped and undoped catalysts and was associated with mixed oxide while the second type was only found on the gold-doped catalyst and was therefore clearly associated with the presence of gold on the catalyst surface The latter was found to be much less active than the oxygen inherent to the oxide but was at a concentration of approximately 10 times larger leading to the enhanced activity observed on gold doping (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved

The tumor suppressor p53 has a crucial role in cellular response to DNA damage caused by ionizing radiation, but it is still unclear whether p53 can modulate radiation-induced bystander effects (RIBE). In the present work, three different hepatoma cell lines, namely HepG2 (wild p53), PLC/PRF/5 (mutation p53) and Hep3B (p53 null), were irradiated with c-rays and then co-cultured with normal Chang liver cell (wild p53) in order to elucidate the mechanisms of RIBE. Results showed that the radiosensitivity of HepG2 cells was higher than that of PLC/PRF/5 and Hep3B cells. Only irradiated HepG2 cells, rather than irradiated PLC/PRF/5 or Hep3B cells, could induce bystander effect of micronuclei (MN) formation in the neighboring Chang liver cells. When HepG2 cells were treated with 20 mu M pifithrin-alpha, an inhibitor of p53 function, or 5 lM cyclosporin A (CsA), an inhibitor of cytochrome- c release from mitochondria, the MN induction in bystander Chang liver cells was diminished. In fact, it was found that after irradiation, cytochrome- c was released from mitochondria into the cytoplasm only in HepG2 cells in a p53- dependent manner, but not in PLC/PRF/5 and Hep3B cells. Interestingly, when 50 lg/ml exogenous cytochrome- c was added into cell co- culture medium, RIBE was significantly triggered by irradiated PLC/PRF/5 and Hep3B cells, which previously failed to provoke a bystander effect. In addition, this exogenous cytochrome- c also partly recovered the RIBE induced by irradiated HepG2 cells even with CsA treatment. Our results provide new evidence that the RIBE can be modulated by the p53 status of irradiated hepatoma cells and that a p53- dependent release of cytochrome- c may be involved in the RIBE. Calculated answer: First-principles calculations have been applied to calculate the energy barrier for the key step in CO formation on a Pt surface (see picture; Pt blue, Pt atoms on step edge yellow) to understand the low CO2 selectivity in the direct ethanol fuel cell. The presence of surface oxidant species such as O (brown bar) and OH (red bar) led to an increase of the energy barrier and thus an inhibition of the key step. © 2012 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An in vivo study in the laboratory rat model was carried out to monitor morphological changes in adult Fasciola hepatica over a 4-day period resulting from combination treatment of triclabendazole (TCBZ) and the metabolic inhibitor, ketoconazole (KTZ). Rats were infected with the TCBZ-resistant Oberon isolate of F. hepatica and divided into 3 groups at 12 weeks post-infection. The first group was dosed orally with TCBZ at a dosage of 10 mg/kg and KTZ at a dosage of 10 mg/kg. Flukes were recovered at 24, 48, 72 and 96h post-treatment (p.t.). A second group of rats was treated with TCBZ alone (10 mg/kg) and sacrificed at 96 h p.t. The third group acted as untreated controls. Surface changes were monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In flukes from the TCBZ+ KTZ-treated group, the results showed a progressive and time-dependent increase in the level of disruption to the tegumental syncytium. Swelling, furrowing, blebbing and sloughing of the syncytium increased with time p.t. Another feature seen was a thick layer of tegumental shedding in some fluke samples at different times p.t. By comparison, flukes treated with TCBZ alone remained unaffected. The results demonstrated that the Oberon isolate is only sensitive to drug action in the presence of ketoconazole, indicating that combining triclabendazole with a metabolic inhibitor could be used to preserve the effectiveness of the drug against TCBZ-resistant populations of F. hepatica. Toward the starburst nucleus of NGC 253, C-12/C-13 line intensity ratios from six carbon bearing molecules (CO, CN, CS, HCN, HCO+, and HNC) are used to confine the possible range of carbon and oxygen isotope ratios. A detailed analysis yields C-12/C-13 approximately 40 and O-16/O-18 approximately 200. Also reported are first detections of (CS)-C-13 and of the 0(0) - 1(-1) E line of methanol (CH3OH) in an extragalactic source.

The carbon-to-oxygen ratio (C/O) in a planet provides critical information about its primordial origins and subsequent evolution. A primordial C/O greater than 0.8 causes a carbide-dominated interior, as opposed to the silicate-dominated composition found on Earth; the atmosphere can also differ from those in the Solar System. The solar C/O is 0.54 (ref. 3). Here we report an analysis of dayside multi-wavelength photometry of the transiting hot-Jupiter WASP-12b (ref. 6) that reveals C/O>=1 in its atmosphere. The atmosphere is abundant in CO. It is depleted in water vapour and enhanced in methane, each by more than two orders of magnitude compared to a solar-abundance chemical-equilibrium model at the expected temperatures. We also find that the extremely irradiated atmosphere (T>2,500K) of WASP-12b lacks a prominent thermal inversion (or stratosphere) and has very efficient day-night energy circulation. The absence of a strong thermal inversion is in stark contrast to theoretical predictions for the most highly irradiated hot-Jupiter atmospheres.
