Small Town Downtown Revitalization: Applying the Main Street Approach to the towns of Perth and Carleton Place, Ontario

The downtown main street of small towns is traditionally the economic, cultural, and social heart of the community, thereby requiring particular attention from planners and researchers alike. Considering modern threats to main streets including suburban sprawl and "big box" development, revitalization strategies are essential to ensuring longevity and vitality of small towns’ cores, in terms of economy, built environment, heritage, and identity. The Main Street Approach was established to mitigate challenges by providing a revitalization tool-kit for small Canadian towns, focusing on organization, marketing and promotion, economic and commercial development, and design and physical improvements. To better understand existing municipal tools for downtown revitalization in Ontario, a comparative analysis of the towns of Carleton Place and Perth's policies was conducted using the four pillars of the Main Street Approach as benchmark for best practice, and recommendations for other small towns to better incorporate revitalization policies were suggested.

Olhares street art - investigação ação : de que forma abordagens de arte contemporânea nas escolas promovem a criatividade

In this study we intend to address a learning experience that was inspired by the intersection between public art and art education. We intend to make a reflection and analysis of pedagogical actions undertaken during this experience related to a theoretical framework to help us evaluate and improve the pedagogical and methodological strategies. The experience began with a visit to the exhibition "Street Art" at the AXA building in Porto. This visit was made with a group of children of different ages, accompanied by their parents, in May 2014. This exhibition brought new gazes for urban art. By recognizing obvious benefits such as proximity and accessibility, urban art, so rarely addressed in the classroom, may be an educational resource. Our intention in this study asks whether the contact with urban works of art can be motivating for students and facilitators of learning. We used a methodology of action research to approach urban art in visual art education lessons, exploring various art objects of the exhibition "Street Art" and the surrounding city with students. The crisis in the eurozone has had a dramatic impact on the economic and social fabric of European countries. However important it may be, the economic dimension is only the symptom of a broader problem. The crisis is primarily political in nature. Lorenzo Bini Smaghi argues in this book that the crisis reflects the inability of western democracies to solve problems that have been building for over two decades. He finds that democratically elected officials are loathe to take unpopular decisions that could jeopardise their re-election. Emergency thus becomes the engine of political action, and the justification for corrective measures vis-à-vis the voters. As a consequence, the cure in the form of austerity, administered belatedly and under pressure from the markets, becomes even more painful and unpopular, giving rise to populist movements and endangering democracy itself.
