Melt viscosity is a key indicator of product quality in polymer extrusion processes. However, real time monitoring and control of viscosity is difficult to achieve. In this article, a novel “soft sensor” approach based on dynamic gray-box modeling is proposed. The soft sensor involves a nonlinear finite impulse response model with adaptable linear parameters for real-time prediction of the melt viscosity based on the process inputs; the model output is then used as an input of a model with a simple-fixed structure to predict the barrel pressure which can be measured online. Finally, the predicted pressure is compared to the measured value and the corresponding error is used as a feedback signal to correct the viscosity estimate. This novel feedback structure enables the online adaptability of the viscosity model in response to modeling errors and disturbances, hence producing a reliable viscosity estimate. The experimental results on different material/die/extruder confirm the effectiveness of the proposed “soft sensor” method based on dynamic gray-box modeling for real-time monitoring and control of polymer extrusion processes. Densities and viscosities were measured as a function of temperature for six ionic liquids (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate and butyltrimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. The density and the viscosity were obtained using a vibrating tube densimeter from Anton Paar and a rheometer from Rheometrics Scientific at temperatures up to 393 K and 388 K with an accuracy of 10-3 g cm-3 and 1%, respectively. The effect of the presence of water on the measured values was also examined by studying both dried and water-saturated samples. A qualitative analysis of the evolution of density and viscosity with cation and anion chemical structures was performed. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2006.

The objective of this research was to optimise the rheological parameters, hardened properties, and setting times of cement grouts containing metakaolin (MTK), viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) and superplasticiser (SP). All mixes were made with water-to-binder ratio (W/B) of 0.40. The replacement of cement by MTK was varied from 6% to 20% (by mass), and dosages of SP and VMA were varied from 0.3% to 1.4%, and 0.01% and 0.06% (by mass of binder), respectively. Increased SP led to an increase in fluidity, reduction in flow time, plate cohesion, rheological parameters, and an increase in the setting times. Increased VMA demonstrated a reduction in fluidity, an increase in Marsh cone time, plate cohesion, yield stress, and plastic viscosity. Results indicate that the use of MTK increased yield stress, plastic viscosity, cohesion plate, and flow time due to the higher surface area associated with an increase in the water demand. MTK reduced mini-slump and setting times, and improved compressive strength.

The propagation of ion acoustic shocks in nonthermal plasmas is investigated, both analytically and numerically. An unmagnetized collisionless electron-ion plasma is considered, featuring a superthermal (non-Maxwellian) electron distribution, which is modeled by a ?-(kappa) distribution function. Adopting a multiscale approach, it is shown that the dynamics of low-amplitude shocks is modeled by a hybrid Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers (KdVB) equation, in which the nonlinear and dispersion coefficients are functions of the ? parameter, while the dissipative coefficient is a linear function of the ion viscosity. All relevant shock parameters are shown to depend on ?: higher deviations from a pure Maxwellian behavior induce shocks which are narrower, faster, and of larger amplitude. The stability profile of the kink-shaped solutions of the KdVB equation against external perturbations is investigated. The spatial profile of the shocks is found to depend upon the dispersion and the dissipation term, and the role of the interplay between dispersion and dissipation is elucidated.

The well-known shock solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation are revisited, together with their limitations in the context of plasma (astro)physical applications. Although available in the literature for a long time, it seems to have been forgotten in recent papers that such shocks are monotonic and unique, for a given plasma configuration, and cannot show oscillatory or bell-shaped features. This uniqueness is contrasted to solitary wave solutions of the two parent equations (Korteweg-de Vries and Burgers), which form a family of curves parameterized by the excess velocity over the linear phase speed.

The properties of hydrogels, in particular their high biocompatibility and water sorption uptake, make hydrogels very attractive in drug delivery and biomedical devices. These favorable features of hydrogels are compromised by certain structural limitations such as those associated with their low mechanical strength in the swollen state. This review highlights the most important challenges that may seriously affect the practical implementation of hydrogels in clinical practice and the solutions that may be applied to overcome these limitations. © 2012 Future Science Ltd.

Using in situ viscosity measurement, the rate of cellulose dissolution in a number of ionic liquids has been determined allowing their performance as solvents to be quantitatively assessed. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium ethanoate was shown to dissolve cellulose faster than analogous ionic liquids with chloride or dimethylphosphate anions. Analysis of the data highlights the influence of both anion basicity and relative concentration on the rate of dissolution.

Density, ?, viscosity, ?, and conductivity, s, measurements of binary mixtures containing the pyrrolidinium nitrate Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL) and propylene carbonate (PC), are determined at the atmospheric pressure as a function of the temperature from (283.15 to 353.15) K and within the whole composition range. The temperature dependence of both the viscosity and conductivity of each mixture exhibits a non-Arrhenius behaviour, but is correctly fitted by using the Vogel–Tamman–Fulcher (VTF) equation. In each case, the best-fit parameters, such as the pseudo activation energy, View the MathML source and ideal glass transition temperature, T0 are then extracted. The excess molar volumes VE, and viscosity deviations from the ideality, ??, of each investigated mixture were then deduced from the experimental results, as well as, their apparent molar volumes, V?, thermal expansion coefficients ap, and excess Gibbs free energies (?G*E) of activation of viscous flow. The VE, apE, ?? values are negative over the whole composition range for each studied temperature therein. According to the Walden rule, the ionicity of each mixture was then evaluated as a function of the temperature from (283.15 to 353.15) K and of the composition. Results have been then discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in this binary mixture.

Emission line fluxes from cool stars are widely used to establish an apparent emission measure distribution, EmdApp(Te), between temperatures characteristic of the low transition region and the low corona. The true emission measure distribution, EmdTrue(Te), is determined by the energy balance and geometry adopted and, with a numerical model, can be used to predict EmdApp(Te), to guide further modelling. The scaling laws that exist between coronal parameters arise from the dimensions of the terms in the energy balance equation. Here, analytical approximations to numerical solutions for EmdTrue(Te) are presented, which show how the constants in the coronal scaling laws are determined. The apparent emission measure distributions show a minimum value at some T0 and a maximum at the mean coronal temperature Tc (although in some stars, emission from active regions can contribute). It is shown that, for the energy balance and geometry adopted, the analytical values of the emission measure and electron pressure at T0 and Tc depend on only three parameters: the stellar surface gravity and the values of T0 and Tc. The results are tested against full numerical solutions for e Eri (K2 V) and are applied to Procyon (a CMi, F5 IV/V). The analytical approximations can be used to restrict the required range of full numerical solutions, to check the assumed geometry and to show where the adopted energy balance may not be appropriate. © 2011 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2011 RAS.

The drive towards cleaner industrial processes has led to the development of room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) as environmentally friendly solvents. They comprise solely of ions which are liquid at room temperature and with over one million simple RTIL alone it is important to characterize their physical properties using minimal sample volumes. Here we present a dual Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) which allows separate determination of viscosity and density using a total sample volume of only 240 mu L. Liquid traps were fabricated on the sensing area of one QCM using SU-8 10 polymer with a second QCM having a flat surface. Changes in the resonant frequencies were used to extract separate values for viscosity and density. Measurements of a range of pure RTIL with minimal water content have been made on five different trap designs. The best agreement with measurements from the larger volume techniques was obtained for trap widths of around 50 pm thus opening up the possibility of integration into lab-on-a-chip systems.
