Ordering of Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions occurs in the rare earth manganates of the general composition Ln(1-x)A(x)MnO(3) (Ln rare earth, A = Ca, Sr). Such charge-ordering is associated with antiferromagnetic and insulating properties. This phenomenon is to be contrasted with the ferromagnetic metallic behavior that occurs when double-exchange between the Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions predominates. Two distinct types of charge-ordering can be delineated. In one, a ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) state transforms to the charge-ordered (CO) state on cooling. In the other scenario, the CO state is found in the paramagnetic ground stale and there is no ferromagnetism down to the lowest temperatures. Magnetic fields transform the CO state to the FMM state, when the average radius of the A-site cations is sufficiently large ([r(A)] > 1.17 Angstrom). Chemical melting of the CO state by Cr3+ substitution in the Mn site is also found only when [r(A)] greater than or similar to 1.17 Angstrom. The effect of the size of the A-cations on the Mn-O-Mn angle is not enough to explain the observed variations of the charge-ordering temperature as well as the ferromagnetic Curie temperature T-c. An explanation based on a competition between the Mn and A-cation orbitals for sigma-bonding with the oxygen rho(sigma) orbitals is considered to account for the large changes in T-c and hence the true bandwidth, with [r(A]). Effects of radiation, electric field, and other factors on the CO state are discussed along with charge-ordering in other manganate systems. Complex phase transitions, accompanied by changes in electronic and magnetic properties, occur in manganates with critical values of(rA) Or bandwidth. Charge-ordering is found in layered manganates, BixCa1-xMnO3 and CaMnO3-delta.

The 1H and 13C NMR spectra of N-(2-pyridinyl)-, N-(4-methyl2-pyridinyl)-, and N-(6-methyl-2-pyridinyl)-3-pyridine-carboxamides (13, respectively) and 3-pyridinecarboxamide (4) in different solvents have been analysed using COSY, HETCOR, chemical shift and coupling constant correlations. The conformations of 14 have been obtained by utilizing the NMR spectra, NOE experiments and MINDO/3 calculations. In dilute solutions, the 2-pyridyl ring is coplanar with the amide group while the 3-pyridyl ring is apparently not. Compounds 13 dimerize through cooperative hydrogen bonding in concentrated CDCl3 solution (approximately 0.1 M) and the structure of the dimer resembles some of the DNA base-pairs. Hydrogen bonding between N---H and the solvent molecules hinders dimerization in (CD3)2CO and CD3CN.

Mo3O5(OH)(2)(AsO4)(2) was prepared at 100 degrees C from an aqueous solution of MoO3 containing arsenic and nitric acids. It crystallises in the monoclinic system, a = 13.024(1)Angstrom, b = 7.2974 (2) Angstrom, c = 13.281(1) Angstrom, beta = 121.124(8)degrees, Z = 4, space group C2/c. The structure was determined by Rietveld refinement from X-ray powder diffraction data. The three-dimensional structure is built up from MoO6 and MoO5OH octahedra and AsO4 tetrahedra sharing corners. The octahedra share two opposite vertices forming zigzag chains that run parallel to [10(1) over bar]. Each AsO4 tetrahedron is connected to four octahedra, two of which belong to the same chain, thus linking three chains. The resulting covalent framework is similar to that of beta VOPO4 in which one tetrahedral P site for every three is empty. The two protons are likely to be bonded to two (out of four) unshared oxygen atoms surrounding this empty site. All the Mo atoms are strongly off-centred in the octahedra; and the off-centring is disordered. The disorder is discussed in terms of Mo shifts perturbed by a disordered hydrogen bonding scheme.

Crystal structures of three heptapeptides Boc-Ala-Leu-Aib-XXX-Ala-Leu-Aib-OMe (where XXX = methionine in peptide A, selenomethionine in peptide B, and S-benzyl cysteine in peptide C) reveal mixed 3(10)-/alpha-helical conformations with R factors of 6.94, 5.79, and 5.98, respectively. All the structures were solved in the P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group. 3(10)- to a-helical transitions are observed in all of these peptides. The helices begin as a 3(10)-helical segment at the N-terminus and then transit for peptides A and C at residue Aib(3) carbonyl (O(3)), while for peptide B the transition occurs at residue Leu(2) carbonyl oxygen (O(2)). There are water molecules associated in the crystal of each of these peptides and they form different types of hydrogen bonding patterns in each crystal. The observations suggest that 3(10)- to alpha-helical transition is sequence dependent in these short heptapeptide sequences.

The results of the structural and conformational studies carried out using C-13 CPMAS NMR technique on several glycine and alanine containing peptides in the solid state are reported. The study demonstrates the effects of variations in C-13 chemical shifts due to conformation and hydrogen bonding. The possibility of applying this technique to obtain insight into the conformational characteristics of peptides of unknown structures is discussed.

In continuation of our studies on the influence of fluoro substitution on the solid state photobehaviour and packing pattern of styrylcoumarins, the results obtained for 4-(3-fluorostyryl)coumarin 1, 4-styryl-6-fluorocoumarin 2 and 4-styryl-7-fluorocoumarin 3 are presented. The configuration of the dimers was established on the basis of crystal packing of 1 and 2 (alpha-packed). A rationale for the significantly lower dimer yield in the crystal for 2 is proposed. In the observed centrosymmetric arrangement of the reactants the C=O ...pi (phenyl) contacts seem to provide additional attractive interactions. C-H ... O and C-H ... F hydrogen bonding seems to provide stability in these structures.

The interaction of guar gum with biotite mica has been investigated through adsorption, flotation and electrokinetic measurements. The adsorption densities of guar gum increase with increase of pH and the isotherms exhibit Langmuirian behaviour. Pretreatment of mica with a complexing agent such as EDTA results in a decrease in the adsorption density, highlighting the contribution of metal ions to the adsorption process. An increase in the surface face-to-edge ratio lends to an increase in the adsorption density. The flotation recoveries decrease as a function of pH, complementing the adsorption results. However, polymer depressant ability is reduced in the case of EDTA treated mica, consequent to reduction of metallic sites. Electrokinetic measurements portray conformational rearrangements of macromolecules with the loading, resulting in the shift of the shear plane, further away from the interface. Dissolution experiments indicate release of metal ions from mica, while co-precipitation tests confirm polymer-metal ion interaction in the bulk solution. The adsorption process is governed by hydrogen bonding as well as chemical interaction between guar gum and the surface metal hydroxide groups of mica. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Treatment of the lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, cis-{EtNP(OR)}(3) [R = C6H4Br-4 (L-1) or C6H4Br-2 (L-2)] with [Mo(CO)(4)(NBD)] (NBD = norbornadiene) yields the mononuclear complexes [Mo(CO)(4)L-1] (1) and [Mo(CO)(4)L-2] (2). which have been characterised by IR, NMR (P-31 and H-1) and FAB mass spectral data. The structure of 1 has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. The structural and conformational changes brought about by complexation are discussed in terms of a bonding model based on "negative hyperconjugation". (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Poly(ethyleneoxide)-poly(vinylalcohol) blends were prepared and characterized using thermal, spectroscopic and structural methods, By all indications the blends appear to be microscopically inhomogeneous with no strong interpolymer bonding. The high degree of crystallinity in PEO regions induces a significant degree of ordering in neighbouring PVA regions, as evident from thermal properties. PVA obtained from solvent evaporation exhibits an irreversible endothermic transition which could be order-disorder type. Both IR and NMR spectroscopies also suggest the presence of subtle structural ordering influence of PEO on PVA. It is found to be possible to prepare self supporting films of the blends which consists of fine dispersion of PEO and PVA in each other. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Complexes of the formulation [(eta(6)-p-cymene)Ru(O-2-C6H4-CH=NC6H4-4-CH3)(L)](ClO4), where L is gamma-picoline, 4-vinylpyridine, 1-methylimidazole and 1-vinylimidazole have been prepared and characterised. The molecular structure of the vinylpyridine adduct has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group P2(1) with the following cell dimensions for the C31H33CIN2O5Ru(M = 650.11): a = 10.890(2)Angstrom, b = 22.295(9)Angstrom, c = 12.930(2)Angstrom, beta = 109.30(2)degrees(3), V = 2964(l)Angstrom 3, Z = 4; D-c = 1.457g cm(-3), lambda(Mo-K alpha) = 0.7107 Angstrom; mu(Mo-K alpha)= 6.61 cm(-1); T = 293 K; R = 0.0359 (wR(2) = 0.0981) for 4819 reflections with I > 2 sigma(I). The structure shows the non-bonding nature of the double bond of the 4-vinylpyridine ligand in the complex in which the metal is bonded to the eta(6)-p-cymene, the N, O-bidentate chelating schiff-base and the unidentate N-donor pyridine ligands.

Crystal structures of the active-site mutants D99A and H48Q and the calcium-loop mutant D49E of bovine phospholipase A(2) have been determined at around 1.9 Angstrom resolution. The D99A mutant is isomorphous to the orthorhombic recombinant enzyme, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), The H48Q and the calcium-loop mutant D49E are isomorphous to the trigonal recombinant enzyme, space group P3(1)21, The two active-site mutants show no major structural perturbations. The structural water is absent in D99A and, therefore, the hydrogen-bonding scheme is changed. In H48Q, the catalytic water is present and hydrogen bonded to Gln48 N, but the second water found in native His48 is absent. In the calcium-loop mutant D49E, the two water molecules forming the pentagonal bipyramid around calcium are absent and only one O atom of the Glu49 carboxylate group is coordinated to calcium, resulting in only four ligands.

Thermal and spectroscopic investigations have been carried out on a number of glasses with a wide range of compositions in the pseudoternary glass system, Li2SO4-Li2O-B2O3, to understand the role of sulfate ions in modifying the borate glass structure. Both nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopic results indicate that four-coordinate boron atoms are retained in the glass structure to a greater extent in sulfate-containing glasses than in pure lithium borate glasses. There seems to be some evidence for the existence of sulfoborate-type units in Raman spectra in the region of 800-960 cm(-1). These conclusions are supported by the observed behavior of glass transition temperatures and molar volumes. The possibility of formation of sulfoborate-type units is discussed from bonding and thermodynamic points of view.

The adsorption of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) onto alumina has been studied as a function of pH, both individually and in the presence of each other. The adsorption density of PAA is found to decrease with an increase of pH while that of PVA shows the opposite trend. In a binary system containing PAA and PVA, the presence of PVA does not affect the adsorption of PAA onto alumina, but the addition of PAA diminishes the adsorption of PVA in the pH range investigated. The adsorption isotherm of PAA at acidic pH exhibits high-affinity Langmuirian behavior. The isotherms for PVA appear rounded and are of the low-affinity type, Once again the adsorption isotherms of PAA remain unaltered in the presence of PVA whereas those of PVA are significantly affected resulting in a lowering of the adsorption density consequent to PAA addition. A variation in the sequence of addition of PAA and PVA does not affect the adsorption behavior of either of the polymers, The electrokinetic behavior of alumina with PAA is hardly influenced by the addition of PVA, On the other hand, the electrophoretic mobility of alumina in the presence of PVA is significantly altered in the presence of PAA and closely resembles the trend observed with PAA alone. Desorption studies reveal that over 80% of PVA could be desorbed in the pH range 3-9 whereas in the case of PAA, the percent desorption increases from 20 to about 70% as the pH is increased from about 3 to 8. Solution conductivity tests confirm interaction of aluminum species and PAA in the bulk solution. FTIR spectroscopic data provide evidence in support of hydrogen bonding and chemical interaction in the case of the PAA-alumina system and hydrogen bonding with respect to the PVA-alumina interaction. Nanocrystalline ZnO:Mn (0.1 mol%) phosphors have been successfully prepared by self propagating, gas producing solution combustion method. The powder X-ray diffraction of as-formed ZnO:Mn sample shows, hexagonal wurtzite phase with particle size of similar to 40 nm. For Mn doped ZnO, the lattice parameters and volume of unit cell (a=3.23065 angstrom, c=5.27563 angstrom and V=47.684 (angstrom)(3)) are found to be greater than that of undoped ZnO (a=3.19993 angstrom, c=5.22546 angstrom and V=46.336 (angstrom)(3)). The SEM micrographs reveal that besides the spherical crystals, the powders also contained several voids and pores. The TEM photograph also shows the particles are approximately spherical in nature. The FTIR spectrum shows two peaks at similar to 3428 and 1598 cm(-1) which are attributed to O-H stretching and H-O-H bending vibration. The PL spectra of ZnO:Mn indicate a strong green emission peak at 526 nm and a weak red emission at 636 nm corresponding to T-4(1) -> (6)A(1) transition of Mn2+ ions. The EPR spectrum exhibits fine structure transition which will be split into six hyperfine components due to Mn-55 hyperfine coupling giving rise to all 30 allowed transitions. From EPR spectra the spin-Hamiltonian parameters have been evaluated and discussed. The magnitude of the hyperfine splitting (A) constant indicates that there exists a moderately covalent bonding between the Mn2+ ions and the surrounding ligands. The number of spins participating in resonance (N), its paramagnetic susceptibility (chi) have been evaluated. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two drug-drug co-crystals of the anti-tuberculosis drugs isoniazid (INH), pyrazinamide (PYR) and 4-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) are reported. The first is the 1 : 1 molecular complex of INH and PAS. The second is the monohydrate of the 1 : 1 complex of PYR and PAS. The crystal structures of both co-crystals are characterized by a number of hydrogen bonded synthons. Hydrogen bonding of the COOH center dot center dot center dot N-pyridine type is found in both cases. In the INH : PAS co-crystal, there are two symmetry independent COOH center dot center dot center dot center dot N-pyridine hydrogen bonds. In one of these, the H-atom is located on the carboxylic group and is indicative of a co-crystal. In the second case, partial proton transfer occurs across the hydrogen bond, and the extent of proton transfer depends on the temperature. This is more indicative of a salt. Drug-drug co-crystals may have some bearing in the treatment of tuberculosis.
