The solvatochromism and other spectroscopic and photophysical characteristics of four azo disperse dyes, derived from 2-amino-5-nitrothiazole, were evaluated and interpreted with the aid of experimental data and quantum mechanical calculations. For the non-substituted compound two conformers, E and Z, were proposed for the isolated molecules, being the second one considerably less stable. The optimization of these structures in combination with a SCRF methodology (IEFPCM, Simulating the molecules in a continuum dielectric with characteristics of methanol), suggests that the Z form is not stable in solution. This same behaviour is expected for the substituted compounds, which is corroborated by experimental data presented in previous investigations [A.E.H. Machado, L.M. Rodrigues, S. Gupta, A.M.F. Oliveira-Campos, A.M.S. Silva, J. Mol. Struct. 738 (2005) 239-245]. For the substituted compounds, two forms derived from E conformer (A and R) are possible. Quantum mechanical data suggest for the isolated molecules, that the low energy absorption hand of the E conformers involve at least two close electronic states. having the low-lying excited state a (1)(n,pi*) nature, and being the S-2 state attributed to a (1)(pi,pi*) transition. The data also suggest a small energy gap between the absorption peaks of A and B, related to the easy conversion between these forms. For the structures optimized in combination with the applied SCRF methodology, an states inversion is observed for the Substituted compounds, with a considerable diminish of the energy gap between A and B absorption peaks. The electronic spectra of these compounds are quite sensitive to changes in the solvent polarity. The positive solvatochromism is more evident in aprotic solvents, probably due to the polarization induced by the solute. These compounds do not fluoresce at 298 K, but present a small but perceptible fluorescence at 77 K, which seems to be favoured by the nature of the group in the 2 `-position of the phenyl ring. Moreover, such compounds present expressive values for first hyperpolarizability, which implies in good non-linear optics (NLO) responses and photoswitching capability. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. High energy band gap hosts doped with lanthanide ions are suitable for optical devices applications To study the potential of Ta(2)O(5) as a host compound pure and Eu(2)O(3)-doped Ta(2)O(5) crystal fibers were grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth technique in diameters ranging from 250 to 2600 pm and in lengths of up to 50 mm The axial temperature gradient at the solid/liquid interface of pure Ta(2)O(5) fibers revealed a critical diameter of 2200 gm above which the fiber cracks X-ray diffraction measurements of the pure Ta(2)O(5) single crystals showed a monoclinic symmetry and a growth direction of [1 (1) over bar 0] An analysis of the pulling rate as a function of the fiber diameter for Eu(2)O(3)-doped Ta(2)O(5) fibers indicated a well defined region in which constitutional supercooling is absent Photoluminescence measurements of pure Ta(2)O(5) crystals using excitation above the band gap (3 8 eV) were dominated by a broad unstructured green band that peaked at 500 nm Three Eu(3+)-related optical centers were identified in the doped samples with nominal concentrations exceeding 1 mol% Two of these centers were consistent with the ion in the monoclinic phase with different oxygen coordinations The third one was visible in the presence of the triclinic phase (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

This paper presents the structural characterization of the indan derivative (+/-)-1-trans-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-1-carboxamide, which was unambiguously determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to be a racemate (R/S: 50/50) crystallizing in an achiral crystal structure (P2(1)/c, a = 9.3180(1) , b = 7.9070(2) , c = 19.7550(4) , beta = 103.250(1)A degrees, V = 1416.75(5) (3) and Z = 4). The diastereomers are related by the inversion symmetry and linked by H bond forming a dimer. The crystal packing is stabilized by hydrogen bonds, including the classical one responsible for the formation of centrosymmetric dimers, and non-classical ones involving C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi-aryl interactions. The intra and intermolecular geometry of the title compound is compared to the (+/-)-1-trans-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-1-carboxylic acid one, which also present an achiral crystal structure from racemates (R/S: 50/50). The two indan derivatives crystallize in a very similar unit cell.

Mebendazole (MBZ) is a common benzimidazole anthelmintic that exists in three different polymorphic forms, A, B, and C. Polymorph C is the pharmaceutically preferred form due to its adequated aqueous solubility. No single crystal structure determinations depicting the nature of the crystal packing and molecular conformation and geometry have been performed on this compound. The crystal structure of mebendazole form C is resolved for the first time. Mebendazole form C crystallizes in the triclinic centrosymmetric space group and this drug is practically planar, since the least-squares methyl benzimidazolylcarbamate plane is much fitted on the forming atoms. However, the benzoyl group is twisted by 31(1)degrees from the benzimidazole ring, likewise the torsional angle between the benzene and carbonyl moieties is 27(1)degrees. The formerly described bends and other interesting intramolecular geometry features were viewed as consequence of the intermolecular contacts occurring within mebendazole C structure. Among these features, a conjugation decreasing through the imine nitrogen atom of the benzimidazole core and a further resonance path crossing the carbamate one were described. At last, the X-ray powder diffractogram of a form C rich mebendazole mixture was overlaid to the calculated one with the mebendazole crystal structure. 355 nm light irradiation of fac-[Mn(CO)(3)(phen)(imH)](+) (fac-1) produces the mer-1 isomer and a long lived radical which can be efficiently trapped by electron acceptor molecules. EPR experiments shows that when excited, the manganese(I) complex can be readily oxidized by one-electron process to produce Mn(II) and phen(.-). In the present study, DFT calculations have been used to investigated the photochemical isomerization of the parent Mn(I) complex and to characterize the electronic structures of the long lived radical. The theoretical calculations have been performed on both the fac-1 and mer-1 species as well as on their one electron oxidized species fac-1+ and mer-1+ for the lowest spin configurations (S = 1/2) and fac-6 and mer-6 (S = 5/2) for the highest one to characterize these complexes. In particular, we used a charge decomposition analysis (CDA) and a natural bonding orbital (NBO) to have a better understanding of the chemical bonding in terms of the nature of electronic interactions. The observed variations in geometry and bond energies with an increasing oxidation state in the central metal ion are interpreted in terms of changes in the nature of metal-ligand bonding interactions. The X-ray structure of fac-1 is also described. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The crystal structure and the vibrational spectrum of a potential drug for Chagas`s disease treatment, the (E)-isomer of phenylethenylbenzofuroxan 1 (5(6)(E)-[(2-phenylethenyl)]benzo[1,2-c]1,2,5-oxadiazole N-oxide), are reported. In order to provide insights into structural relationships, quantum mechanical calculations were employed starting from crystal structure. These results have given theoretical support to state interesting structural features, such as the effect of some intermolecular contacts on the molecule conformation and the electronic delocalization decreasing through atoms of the benzofuroxan moiety. Furthermore, the MOGUL comparative analysis in the Cambridge Structural Database provided additional evidences on these structural behaviors of compound 1. Intermolecular contacts interfere on the intramolecular geometry, as, for instance, on the phenyl group orientation, which is twisted by 12.32(6)A degrees from the ethenylbenzofuroxan plane. The experimental Raman spectrum of compound 1 presents unexpected frequency shift and also anomalous Raman activities. At last, the molecule skeleton deformation and the characteristic vibrational modes were correlated by matching the experimental Raman spectrum to the calculated one.

The goal of this paper is to analyze the character of the first Hopf bifurcation (subcritical versus supercritical) that appears in a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equation with nonlinear boundary conditions of logistic type with delay. We showed in the previous work [Arrieta et al., 2010] that if the delay is small, the unique non-negative equilibrium solution is asymptotically stable. We also showed that, as the delay increases and crosses certain critical value, this equilibrium becomes unstable and undergoes a Hopf bifurcation. This bifurcation is the first one of a cascade occurring as the delay goes to infinity. The structure of this cascade will depend on the parameters appearing in the equation. In this paper, we show that the first bifurcation that occurs is supercritical, that is, when the parameter is bigger than the delay bifurcation value, stable periodic orbits branch off from the constant equilibrium.

In this work we investigate the relation between the fundamental group of a complete Riemannian manifold M and the quotient between the Weyl group and reflection group of a polar action on M, as well as the relation between the fundamental group of M and the quotient between the lifted Weyl group and lifted reflection group. As applications we give alternative proofs of two results. The first one, due to the author and Toben, implies that a polar action does not admit exceptional orbits, if M is simply connected. The second result, due to Lytchak, implies that the orbits are closed and embedded if M is simply connected. All results are proved in the more general case of polar foliations.

Let (M, g) be a complete Riemannian Manifold, Omega subset of M an open subset whose closure is diffeomorphic to an annulus. If partial derivative Omega is smooth and it satisfies a strong concavity assumption, then it is possible to prove that there are at least two geometrically distinct geodesics in (Omega) over bar = Omega boolean OR partial derivative Omega starting orthogonally to one connected component of partial derivative Omega and arriving orthogonally onto the other one. The results given in [6] allow to obtain a proof of the existence of two distinct homoclinic orbits for an autonomous Lagrangian system emanating from a nondegenerate maximum point of the potential energy, and a proof of the existence of two distinct brake orbits for a. class of Hamiltonian systems. Under a further symmetry assumption, it is possible to show the existence of at least dim(M) pairs of geometrically distinct geodesics as above, brake orbits and homoclinics.

The volatile oil composition and anti-acetyl cholinesterase activity were analyzed in two specimens of Marlierea racemosa growing in different areas of the Atlantic Rain Forest (Cananeia and Caraguatatuba, SP, Brazil). Component identifications were performed by GUMS and their acetyl cholinesterase inhibitory activity was measured through colorimetric analysis. The major constituent in both specimens was spathulenol (25.1 % in Cananeia and 31.9% in Caraguatatuba). However, the first one also presented monoterpenes (41.2%), while in the Carguatatuba plants, this class was not detected. The oils from the plants collected in Cananeia were able to inhibit the acetyl cholinesterase activity by LIP to 75%, but for oils from the other locality the maximal inhibition achieved was 35%. These results suggested that the monoterpenes are more effective in the inhibition of acetyl cholinesterase activity than sesquiterpenes as these compounds are present in higher amounts in the M. racemosa plants collected in Cananeia.

The nonadiabatic photochemistry of 6-azauracil has been studied by means of the CASPT2//CASSCF protocol and double-zeta plus polarization ANO basis sets. Minimum energy states, transition states, minimum energy paths, and surface intersections have been computed in order to obtain an accurate description of several potential energy hypersurfaces. It is concluded that, after absorption of ultraviolet radiation (248 nm), two main relaxation mechanisms may occur, via which the lowest (3)(pi pi*) state can be populated. The first one takes place via a conical intersection involving the bright (1)(pi pi*) and the lowest (1)(n pi*) states, ((1)pi pi*/(1)n pi*)(CI), from which a low energy singlet-triplet crossing, ((1)n pi*/(3)pi pi*)(STC), connecting the (1)(n pi*) state to the lowest (3)(pi pi*) triplet state is accessible. The second mechanism arises via a singlet-triplet crossing, ((1)pi pi*/(3)n pi*)(STC), leading to a conical intersection in the triplet manifold, ((3)n pi*/(3)pi pi*)(CI), evolving to the lowest (3)(pi pi*) state. Further radiationless decay to the ground state is possible through a (gs/(3)pi pi*)(STC).

The effect of variations in the composition for ternary catalysts of the type Pt-x(Ru-Ir)(1-x)/C on the methanol oxidation reaction in acid media for x values of 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 is reported. The catalysts were prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. The nanometric character (2.8-3.2 nm) of the sol-gel deposits was demonstrated by XRD and TEM while EDX and AAS analyses showed that the metallic ratio in the compounds was very near to the expected one. Cyclic voltammograms for methanol oxidation revealed that the reaction onset occur at less positive potentials in all the ternary catalysts tested here when compared to a Pt-0.75-Ru-0.25/C (E-Tek) commercial composite. Steady-state polarization experiments (Tafel plots) showed that the Pt-0.25(Ru-Ir)(0.75)/C catalyst is the more active one for methanol oxidation as revealed by the shift of the reaction onset towards lower potentials. In addition, constant potential electrolyses suggest that the addition of Ru and Ir to Pt decreases the poisoning effect of the strongly adsorbed species generated during methanol oxidation. Consequently, the Pt-0.25 (Ru-Ir)(0.75)/C Composite catalyst is a very promising one for practical applications. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The simple halogenation of alkynes in conventional organic reactions gives a blend of cis and trans isomers. It is proposed then, a synthesis of stereospecific halogenation of alkynes in trans position, using palladacycle as intermediaries. The recrystallization of the compound obtained by bromination of 2-Styrylpyridine, with cyclepalladium intermediary results in a single crystal, which is subjected to X-ray diffraction. The crystal packing is established through weak interactions of three types. The first one is of the type pi x pi interactions, from symmetry operation, between the centroids. The second one is of the type C-X center dot center dot center dot pi interactions. And the last type is an anomalous intermolecular interaction between halogens, C-X center dot center dot center dot X-C, with bond distances smaller than the sum of the van der Waals radii. The conformation on the C=C bond is trans and the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings is (with esd approximate) 18.1(3)degrees. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Platinum stepped surfaces vicinal to the (1 1 0) crystallographic pole have been investigated voltammetrically in 0.1 M HClO(4) and 0.1 M H(2)SO(4) solutions. Changes in the voltammetric profile with the step density suggest the existence of two types of surface sites, that has been ascribed to linear and bidimensional domains. This result indicates the existence of important restructuring processes that separate the real surface distribution from the nominal one. The electronic properties of the surfaces have been characterized with the CO charge displacement method and the potential of zero total charge has been calculated as a function of the step density.
