Objective: To investigate laryngeal function and phonatory disturbance in children with traumatic brain injury (TBI), using both perceptual and instrumental techniques. Design and participants: The performance of 16 individuals with moderate to severe TBI acquired in childhood and 16 nonneurologicatly impaired control subjects was compared on a battery of perceptual (Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment, speech sample analysis) and instrumental (Aerophone II, laryngograph) assessments. Results and conclusions: As a group, the children with TBI demonstrated normal, or only minimally impaired laryngeal function, when compared with the control group, which contrasts with the significant laryngeal impairment noted in adults after TBI. Several reasons for the different findings in relation to laryngeal function in adults and children after TBI are postulated: (1) differing types of injury usually incurred by adults and children may result in a relatively decreased degree of neurologic impairment in these children, (2) differences in recovery potential between adults and children, and (3) the pediatric larynx is still developing, hence it may be better able to compensate for any impairment incurred.

This paper uses a stochastic translog cost frontier model and a panel data of five key mining industries in Australia over 1968-1969 to 1994-1995 to investigate the sources of output growth and the effects of cost inefficiency on total factor productivity (TFP) growth. The results indicate that mining output growth was largely input-driven rather than productivity-driven. Although there were some gains from technological progress and economics of scale in production, cost inefficiency which barely exceeded 1.1% since the mid-1970s in the mining industries was the main factor causing low TFP growth. Slag composition determines the physical and chemical properties as well as the application performance of molten oxide mixtures. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a routine instrumental technique to produce accurate and precise analytical results for better process and production control. In the present paper, a multi-component analysis technique of powdered metallurgical slag samples by X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRFS) has been demonstrated. This technique provides rapid and accurate results, with minimum sample preparation. It eliminates the requirement for a fused disc, using briquetted samples protected by a layer of Borax(R). While the use of theoretical alpha coefficients has allowed accurate calibrations to be made using fewer standard samples, the application of pseudo-Voight function to curve fitting makes it possible to resolve overlapped peaks in X-ray spectra that cannot be physically separated. The analytical results of both certified reference materials and industrial slag samples measured using the present technique are comparable to those of the same samples obtained by conventional fused disc measurements.
