We used the fabrics of two granite plutons and U/Pb (SHRIMP) zircon ages to constrain the tectonic evolution of the E-trending Patos shear zone (Borborema Province, NE Brazil). The pre-tectonic Teixeira batholith consists of an amphibole leucogranite locally with aegirine-augite. Zircons from a syenogranite yielded crystallization ages of 591 +/- 5 Ma. The batholith fabrics were determined by anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and mineral shape preferred orientation. The fabrics support pre-transcurrent batholith emplacement, as evidenced by: (i) magmatic/magnetic fabrics in low susceptibility (<0.35 mSI) leucogranites highly discordant to the regional host rock structure, and (ii) concordant magnetic fabrics restricted to high susceptibility (>1 mSI) corridors connected to shear zones branching off from Patos. One of these satellite shear zones controlled the syntectonic emplacement of the Serra Redonda pluton, which yields a crystallization age of 576 +/- 3 Ma. This late shearing event marks the peak regional deformation that, south of Patos, was coupled to crustal shortening nearly perpendicular to the shear belt. The chronology of the deformational events indicates that the major shear zones of the eastern Borborema are late structures active after the crustal blocks amalgamated. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Of considerable importance to the generation of ultrafine microstructures is the development of high misorientations. The present work examines the effect of the crystallographic rotation field in simple shear upon the evolution of misorientation during plastic working. A series of Taylor simulations are presented and it is shown that the rotation field is such that small differences in orientation in the region of the main torsion texture components are considerably increased with the application of shear strain. This did not occur in simulations of rolling. The torsion simulations compare favourably with the nature of the misorientations evident in hot worked 1050 Al and Ti-IF steel. It is concluded that shear deformation, by its nature, facilitates the generation of higher misorientations.

We investigate all algebraically special, not conformally flat, shear-free, isentropic (p(w), w + p ≠ 0), perfect fluid solutions of Einstein's field equations. We show, using the GHP formalism, that if the repeated principle null direction of the Weyl tensor is coplanar with the fluid's 4-velocity and vorticity vector (assumed nonzero), then the fluid's expansion must vanish.

The giant lantern shark, Etmopterus baxteri, is taken as bycatch of commercial fisheries that operate in deepwater off southeastern Australia. Bands on the second dorsal spine were used to obtain age estimates. The number of bands on the external surface of the spine and within the inner dentine layer increased with animal length. Most spines had more bands on the external surface, and the rate of band formation was significantly different between the external surface and the inner dentine layer. Females had a maximum of 57 external bands and 26 internal bands, while males had up to 48 external bands and 22 internal bands. Age estimates from external bands suggest maturity (A 50) at 20 years for males and 30 years for females. Internal band age estimates suggest maturity at 10.5 years for males and 11.5 years for females. Although there is a large discrepancy between these two preliminary (i.e., unvalidated) age estimates, they both suggest that E. baxteri is a long-lived and late maturing species that is likely to be susceptible to over fishing.

Bands on the external surface of the second dorsal-fin spine proved to be a novel method of estimating the age and growth of Centroselachus crepidater. Bands that followed the shape of the spine base were enhanced with an alizarin red derivative. Internal bands in spine cross sections were also examined. The number of both external and internal bands increased with animal size, although most spines had more external than internal bands. External bands were more reliable and were assumed to be annuli. The rate of band formation differed after five bands had been formed, and internal bands ceased forming after 30 years. Females to 54 years old and males to 34 years old were examined. Maturity occurred over a wide age range, with estimates of 20 years for females and 9 years for males. The youngest pregnant female was 27 years old. The Francis reparameterized von Bertalanffy growth model found similar growth for males and females, and the von Bertalanffy equations were Lt = 96.12(1 – e(–0.072(t+6.13))) for females and Lt = 73.22(1 – e(–0.141(t+2.99))) for males.

An investigation into the production of ultrafine (1 µm) equiaxed ferrite (UFF) grains in low-carbon steel was made using laboratory rolling, compression dilatometry, and hot torsion techniques. It was found that the hot rolling of thin strip, with a combination of high shear strain and high undercooling, provided the conditions most suitable for the formation of this type of microstructure. Although high strains could be applied in compression and torsion experiments, large volume fractions of UFF were not observed in those samples, possibly due to the lower level of undercooling achieved. It is thought that ferrite refinement was due to a strain-induced transformation process, and that ferrite grains nucleated on parallel and linear deformation bands that traversed austenite grains. These bands formed during the deformation process, and the undercooling provided by the contact between the strip and the work rolls was sufficient to drive the transformation to homogeneous UFF grains.

Interaction of Lamb waves with structural damage can lead to wave mode conversion. In this study, the shear horizontal (SH) wave, from the mode conversion of the fundamental symmetric Lamb wave (S0), was used for quantitative identification of delamination in composite beams, based on advanced signal processing using an inverse approach. SH wave propagation under various delamination conditions in CF/EP beams made of orthotropic plain woven fabrics was simulated, and signal characteristics were extracted in terms of the concept of digital damage fingerprints (DDF). With the aid of an artificial neural algorithm, the relation between the DDF of delamination-scattered SH mode and damage parameters was calibrated, whereby the occurrence, location and size of delamination in the composite beams were assessed. The approach was experimentally validated, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of SH mode for quantitative damage evaluation of composite structures.

Efficient and accurate finite elements are crucial for finite element analysis to provide adequate prediction of the structural behavior. A large amount of laminated plate elements have been developed for finite element analysis of laminated composite plates based on the various lamination theories. A recent and complete review of the laminated finite elements based on the higher-order shear deformation theories, including the global higher-order theories, zig-zag theories and the global-local higher-order theories is presented in this paper. Finally some points on the development of the laminated plate elements are summarized.

Background

Polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are polymers successfully used as large diameter arterial grafts for peripheral vascular surgery. However, these prosthetic grafts are rarely used for coronary bypass surgery because of their low patency rates. Endothelialisation of the lumenal surface of these materials may improve their patency. This study aimed to compare the endothelialisation of PET, PTFE and pericardium by examining their seeding efficiency over time and the effect of various shear stresses on retention of endothelial cells.

Methods

Ovine endothelial cells at 4 × 105 cells/cm2 were seeded onto PET, PTFE and pericardium, and cultured for 1–168 hours. Cell coverage was determined via en face immunocytochemistry and cell retention was quantified after being subjected to shear stresses ranging from 0.018 to 0.037 N/m2 for 15, 30 and 60 minutes.

Results

Endothelial cells adhered to all of the materials one hour post-seeding. PET exhibited better cell retention rate, ranging from 66.9 ± 5.6% at 0.018 N/m2 for 15 min to 44.7 ± 1.9% at 0.037 N/m2 for 60 minutes, when compared to PTFE and pericardium (p < 0.0001, three-way ANOVA).

Conclusion

PET shows superior retention of endothelial cells during shear stress compare to PTFE and pericardium.

We investigate shear-free perfect fluid solutions of the Einstein field equations where the fluid pressure satisfies a barotropic equation of state and the spatial divergence of the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor is zero. We prove, with the exception of certain quite restricted special cases within the class of solutions in which there exists a Killing vector aligned with the vorticity and for which the magnitude of the vorticity ω is not a function of the matter density μ alone, that such a fluid is either non-rotating or non-expanding. In the restricted cases the equation of state must satisfy an over-determined differential system.

Geckos have extraordinary wall-climbing ability because of the millions of hairs with micro/nano fibrillar structures on their feet. Mimicking gecko's feet is of scientific and engineering importance for development of physical adhesion materials and devices. The design of gecko-inspired physical adhesives seems to be geometry dominated. In this study, Finite Element Method (FEM) has been used to analyse the vertical peel-off force of polyporpylene (PP) nanofibres having different fibre dimensions, inclining angels and contact areas on a flat glass substrate. It has been found that the main parameters affecting the frictional adhesion are fibre diameter and fibre aspect ratio, the inclining angle between the fibre and the substrate surface, and the intimate contact areas. Our analysis has shown that PP nanofibres with a diameter of less than 200nm can generate less peel-off force than fibres of larger diameters, indicating more stable adhesion with the glass substrate for thinner fibres. A bent fibre with more intimate contact area can bear more shear force than a straight fibre with less contact area. Also, under the same shear loading, fibres with an inclining angle of less than 30° provide a low peel off force.
