Evaluation of relative growth limitation due to depletion of glucose and oxygen during fungal growth on a spherical solid particle

A mathematical model for glucose and oxygen consumption, and cell growth during fungal growth on a single solid particle is developed. A moving biofilm is assumed to be present on the surface of the solid particle. Initially only glucose is assumed to be growth limiting and later oxygen transferred from the gas phase on to the biofilm is also assumed to be growth limiting. Glucose is found to be severely growth limiting when assumed to be the only growth limiting factor and its limiting levels far less severe when oxygen limitation is also included. The objective of the model is to gain a better understanding of the mass transfer and relative growth limiting characteristics of glucose and oxygen in fungal growth systems. The results obtained from the model proposed here will be the subject of future work.

Relative performances of textural models in estimating soil moisture characteristic

The soil moisture characteristic (SMC) forms an important input to mathematical models of water and solute transport in the unsaturated-soil zone. Owing to their simplicity and ease of use, texture-based regression models are commonly used to estimate the SMC from basic soil properties. In this study, the performances of six such regression models were evaluated on three soils. Moisture characteristics generated by the regression models were statistically compared with the characteristics developed independently from laboratory and in-situ retention data of the soil profiles. Results of the statistical performance evaluation, while providing useful information on the errors involved in estimating the SMC, also highlighted the importance of the nature of the data set underlying the regression models. Among the models evaluated, the one possessing an underlying data set of in-situ measurements was found to be the best estimator of the in-situ SMC for all the soils. Considerable errors arose when a textural model based on laboratory data was used to estimate the field retention characteristics of unsaturated soils.

A stereoselective strategy for the rapid acquisition of the complete framework (dideoxyottelione A) of the promising cytotoxic agent ottelione A, with four contiguous stereogenic centres on a hydrindane skeleton and a sensitive 4-methylenecyclohex-2-enone functionality, from the readily available Diels-Alder adduct of 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5,5-dimethoxycyclopentadiene and norbornadiene, is delineated.

Synthetic studies towards novel terpenic natural products kelsoene and poduran: Construction of the complete 4-5-5-fused tricarbocyclic core

A common synthetic approach to the recently reported sesquiterpene kelsoene 1 and the tetraterpene poduran 5, bearing a novel tricyclo[6.2.0.0(2,6)]decane framework, from commercially available 1,5-COD and leading to the first construction of the carbocyclic core present in these natural products is delineated.

Growth mechanism of phases, Kirkendall voids, marker plane position, and indication of the relative mobilities of the species in the interdiffusion zone

Often, wrong conclusions about the mobilities of species are drawn from the position of the Kirkendall marker plane or voids in the interdiffusion zone. To clarify, I have discussed the growth mechanism of the phases and the position of the marker plane depending on the relative mobilities of the species. The formation of different kinds of voids in the interdiffusion zone is discussed. Further, the microstructure that could be found because of the Kirkendall effect is also explained.

A facile regioselective construction of spiro epoxy-bridged tetrahydropyranone frameworks

Investigations on the reactivity profile of the transient five-membered-ring cyclic carbonyl ylides, generated from alpha-diazo ketones, in the presence of the C=O group of various simple ketones and symrnetrical/unsymmetrical 1,2-diones were carried out. The reaction of alpha-diazo ketones with 1,2-naphthoquinone furnished interesting diastereomeric cycloadducts in which both the C=O groups acted as dipolarophilic sites. The similar reaction in the presence of several isatin derivatives afforded novel spiro dioxa-bridged indole derivatives as a mixture of diastereomers. The single crystal X-ray structure analysis manifestly revealed the mode of cycloaddition and the stereochemistry of two of the diastereomers. A diverse set of novel spiro epoxy-bridged tetrahydropyranone frameworks have been constructed in good yield via the tandem cyclization-cycloaddition of alpha-diazo ketones with the C=O group as heterodipolarophile in a regioselective manner. Synthesis based on cyclohexadienes Part 36: an efficient methodology for the construction of spiro[4.5]decanes: a formal synthesis of acorone

An efficient strategy for the contruction of spiro[4.5] decanes is described and involves a bridgehead substitution of a methoxyl group by a methyl group followed by an oxidative cleavage of the tricyclo[5.2.2.0(1,5)] undecane 25 to produce the spiro[4.5] decanes 31 & 32 which are intermediates in the synthesis of acorone. A novel one-pot conversion of alpha-methoxy carboxylic acid to alpha-methyl carboxylic acid is described.
