Se analizan los patrones de publicación y citación en ciencias humanas y sociales en Scopus en el período 2003-2012, según el alcance geográfico de la investigación. Los resultados muestran que los temas de alcance nacional tienen un predominio del español como lengua de publicación y una marcada preferencia por la autoría única frente a los patrones observados en el grupo de otros temas, no situados geográficamente, donde el inglés y la colaboración institucional es más fuerte y está más consolidada. La citación no parece estar determinada solo por el alcance geográfico de las investigaciones, sino también por el idioma de publicación, la coautoría y los perfiles de las revistas donde se publica. Se espera que los resultados den lugar a una reflexión constructiva sobre la cultura investigadora y editorial y que sean útiles como referencia para establecer criterios de evaluación en las comisiones evaluadoras y las políticas editoriales a nivel nacional

Manganese contents in reduced sediments and accumulation rates were investigated. Their values in sediments of most of cores are background (0.03-0.07 %).Anomalous concentrations (up to 2.5 %) and accumulation rates (up to 60 mg/cm**2/ka) occur near the known region of hydrothermal barite mineralization in the Derugin Basin. High accumulation rates of Mn (>10 mg/cm**2/ka) also occur in Holocene sediments to south-east from the Derugin Basin. It can be assumed that high Mn contents and accumulation rates occur there due to transportation of Mn-rich water from the Derugin Basin in the near-bottom layer under the lower border of the Sea of Okhotsk Intermediate Water. Intensive Mn accumulation is also typical for the South Okhotsk Basin near the Bussol Strait. Mn accumulation rates of glacial sediments of the second oxygen isotope stage are less significant, which is presumed to be caused by paleoceanological reasons.

The density, species composition, and possible change in the status of pack ice seals within the Weddell Sea were investigated during the 1997/1998 summer cruise of the RV "Polarstern" (ANT-XV/3, PS48). Comparisons were made with previous surveys in the Weddell Sea where it was assumed that all seals were counted in a narrow strip on either side oft he ship or aircraft. A total of 15 aerial censuses were flown during the period 23 January - 7 March 1998 in the area bounded by 07°08' and 45°33' West longitude. The censused area in the eastern Weddell Sea was largely devoid of pack ice while a well circumscribed pack ice field remained in the western Weddell Sea. A total of 3,636 (95.4 %) crabeater seals, 21 (0.5 %) Ross seals, 45 (1.2 %) leopard seals and 111 (2.9 %) Weddell seals were observed on the pack ice during a total of 1,356.57 linear nautical miles (244.2 nm) of transect line censused. At a mean density of 21.16 1/nm**2 over an area of 244.2 nm, it is the highest densities on record for crabeater seals, density of up to 411.7 1/nm**2 being found in small areas. The overall high densities of seals (30.18 1/nm**2) recorded for the eastern Weddell Sea (27.46 1/nm**2, 0.27 1/nm**2, and 0.66 1/nm**2 for crabeater, leopard and Weddell seals respectively) is a consequence of the drastically reduced ice cover and the inverse relationship that exists between cover and seal densities. Ross seal densities (0.08 1/nm**2) were the lowest on record fort the area. It is suggested that seals largely remain within the confines of the pack ice despite seasonal and annual changes in its distribution. Indications are that in 1998 the El Niño has manifested itself in the Weddell Sea, markedly influencing the density and distribution of pack ice seals.

The first data on content of inorganic reduced sulfur compounds [H2S, S°, S2O3(2-), SO3(2-)] were obtained at two stations in the northeastern Levant Sea (Mediterranean Basin). With lower detection limit for the mentioned sulfur forms of 30 nM, sulfide forms were not found, while thiosulfate concentration varied from 178 to 890 nM (from 24 to 78 % of total reduced S), and S° varied from 156 to 1090 nM. Vertical distribution of these compounds showed irregular character; correlation between total reduced S maxima, fluorescence, and increase of nutrient element content near the lower pycnocline boundary was observed. The maximum total sulfur concentration in the surface layer was likely due an anthropogenic influence. The ''starting'' mechanism that controls appearance and distribution of sulfur compounds in oxygen-containing water is the process of bacterial sulfate reduction in micropatches of fresh organic detritus. Reduced sulfur forms participate further in a series of chemical and biochemical processes. Contribution of hydrolysis of organic sulfur-containing compounds is insignificant for the region in study.

Human activities are fundamentally altering the chemistry of the world's oceans. Ocean acidification (OA) is occurring against a background of warming and an increasing occurrence of disease outbreaks, posing a significant threat to marine organisms, communities, and ecosystems. In the current study, 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to investigate the response of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, to a 90-day exposure to reduced seawater pH and increased temperature, followed by a subsequent pathogenic challenge. Analysis of the metabolome revealed significant differences between male and female organisms. Furthermore, males and females are shown to respond differently to environmental stress. While males were significantly affected by reduced seawater pH, increased temperature, and a bacterial challenge, it was only a reduction in seawater pH that impacted females. Despite impacting males and females differently, stressors seem to act via a generalized stress response impacting both energy metabolism and osmotic balance in both sexes. This study therefore has important implications for the interpretation of metabolomic data in mussels, as well as the impact of environmental stress in marine invertebrates in general.

Concentrations of sulfide, S°, and thiosulfate were determined in waters of the Baltic Sea. Microquantities of these compounds were observed in oxic waters. Concentration levels of reduced sulfur compounds in Baltic oxic waters were very close to levels of the Black Sea oxic zone. Thiosulfate and S° were predominate compounds in oxic water whereas sulfide was a predominant compound of Baltic waters high in hydrogen sulfide. Conclusion was made that during sedimentation in oxic waters anaerobic microorganisms along with aerobic bacteria take part in mineralization of organic matter. They exist on surfaces and in microniches of particles of organic detritus.

In this study we analyzed the physiological responses of coralline algae to ocean acidification (OA) and global warming, by exposing algal thalli of three species with contrasting photobiology and growth-form to reduced pH and elevated temperature. The analysis aimed to discern between direct and combined effects, while elucidating the role of light and photosynthesis inhibition in this response. We demonstrate the high sensitivity of coralline algae to photodamage under elevated temperature and its severe consequences on thallus photosynthesis and calcification rates. Moderate levels of light-stress, however, were maintained under reduced pH, resulting in no impact on algal photosynthesis, although moderate adverse effects on calcification rates were still observed. Accordingly, our results support the conclusion that global warming is a stronger threat to algal performance than OA, in particular in highly illuminated habitats such as coral reefs. We provide in this study a quantitative physiological model for the estimation of the impact of thermal-stress on coralline carbonate production, useful to foresee the impact of global warming on coralline contribution to reef carbon budgets, reef cementation, coral recruitment and the maintenance of reef biodiversity. This model, however, cannot yet account for the moderate physiological impact of low pH on coralline calcification.

As the surface ocean equilibrates with rising atmospheric CO2, the pH of surface seawater is decreasing with potentially negative impacts on coral calcification. A critical question is whether corals will be able to adapt or acclimate to these changes in seawater chemistry. We use high precision CT scanning of skeletal cores of Porites astreoides, an important Caribbean reef-building coral, to show that calcification rates decrease significantly along a natural gradient in pH and aragonite saturation (Omega arag). This decrease is accompanied by an increase in skeletal erosion and predation by boring organisms. The degree of sensitivity to reduced ?arag measured on our field corals is consistent with that exhibited by the same species in laboratory CO2 manipulation experiments. We conclude that the Porites corals at our field site were not able to acclimatize enough to prevent the impacts of local ocean acidification on their skeletal growth and development, despite spending their entire lifespan in low pH, low Omega arag seawater.
