A new series of nano-sized Ce1-xEuxCrO3 (x = 0.0 to 1.0) with an average particle size of 50 - 80 nm were synthesized using a solution combustion method. Nano-powders Ce1-xEuxCrO3 with the canted antiferromagnetic property exhibited interesting magnetic behaviours including the reversal magnetization and the exchange bias effect. The effect of europium doping as the ion with the smaller radius size and different electron con figuration on structural, magnetic and thermal properties of Ce1-xEuxCrO3 were investigated using various experimental techniques, i.e. DC/AC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, thermal expansion, Raman scattering, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, transmission/scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and neutron scattering. An exchange bias effect, magnetization irreversibility and AC susceptibility dispersion in these samples confirmed the existence of the spin disorder magnetic phase in Ce1-xEuxCrO3 compounds. The exchange bias phenomenon, which is assigned to the exchange coupling between glassy-like shell and canted antiferromagnetic core, showed the opposite sign in CeCrO3 and EuCrO3 at low temperatures, suggesting different exchange interactions at the interfaces in these compounds. The energy level excitation of samples were examined by an inelastic neutron scattering which was in good agreement with the heat capacity data. Neutron scattering analysis of EuCrO3 was challenging due to the large neutron absorption cross-section of europium. All diffraction patterns of Ce1-xEuxCrO3 showed the magnetic peak attributed to the antiferromagnetic Cr3+ spins while none of the diffraction patterns could detect the magnetic ordering of the rare-earth ions in these samples.

Dielectric ceramics based on solid solution phases of [RE1_x= REr]TiNb06, where REI_s = Nd, Pr, Sm and RE' = Dy, Gd and Y, were prepared by the conventional solid-state ceramic route for values of x. The ceramic samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction and microwave methods. Ceramics based on RE (Pr, Nd and Sm) belonging to aeschynite group shows positive value of Tf and those based on RE (Gd, Dy and Y) belonging to euxenite group show negative value of r f. The solid solution phases between the aeschynite and the euxenite group shows intermediate dielectric constant and r f values. The results indicate the possibility of tailoring the dielectric properties by varying the composition of the solid solution phases. The range of solid solubility of euxenite in aeschenite and aeschenite in euxenite are different for different rare earth ions

Microwave dielectric ceramics based on RETiTaO6 (RE = La, Cc, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Yb, Al, and In) were prepared using a conventional solid-state ceramic route. The structure and microstructure of the samples were analyzed using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The sintered samples were characterized in the microwave frequency region. The ceramics based on Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy, which crystallize in orthorhombic aeschynite structure, had a relatively high dielectric constant and positive T f while those based on Ho, Er, and Yb, with orthorhombic euxenite structure, had a low dielectric constant and negative Tf. The RETiTaO6 ceramics had a high-quality factor. The dielectric constant and unit cell volume of the ceramics increased with an increase in ionic radius of the rare-earth ions, but density decreased with it. The value of Tf increased with an increase in RE ionic radii, and a change in the sign of Tf occurred when the ionic radius was between 0.90 and 0.92 A. The results indicated that the boundary of the aeschynite to euxenite morphotropic phase change lay between DyTiTaO6 and HoTiTaO6. Low-loss ceramics like ErTiTaO6 (Er = 20.6, Qxf = 85,500), EuTiTaO6 (Er = 41.3, Qxf = 59,500), and YTiTaO6 (Er = 22.1, Q„xf = 51,400) are potential candidates for dielectric resonator applications

The propagation of an optical beam through dielectric media induces changes in the refractive index, An, which causes self-focusing or self-defocusing. In the particular case of ion-doped solids, there are thermal and non-thermal lens effects, where the latter is due to the polarizability difference, Delta alpha, between the excited and ground states, the so-called population lens (PL) effect. PL is a pure electronic contribution to the nonlinearity, while the thermal lens (TL) effect is caused by the conversion of part of the absorbed energy into heat. In time-resolved measurements such as Z-scan and TL transient experiments, it is not easy to separate these two contributions to nonlinear refractive index because they usually have similar response times. In this work, we performed time-resolved measurements using both Z-scan and mode mismatched TL in order to discriminate thermal and electronic contributions to the laser-induced refractive index change of the Nd3+-doped Strontium Barium Niobate (SrxBa1-xNb2O6) laser crystal. Combining numerical simulations with experimental results we could successfully distinguish between the two contributions to An. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

New lanthanide complexes with benzeneseleninic (ABSe) and 4-chloro-benzeneseleninic (ABSeCl) acids have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and UV-visible spectroscopies. The emission spectra of the trivalent europium complexes presented the typical electronic (5)D(0) -> (7)F(j) transitions of the ion (J = 0-4). The ground-state geometries of the europium complexes have been calculated by using the Sparkle/AM1 model. From these results, the 4f-4f intensity parameters and energies of the ligand singlet and triplet excited states have been obtained. The lower emission quantum yield for the [Eu(ABSe)(3)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(2) compound, as compared to the [Eu(Al(3)SeCl)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] one, can be associated to the higher numbers of water molecules, in the first and second coordination spheres, that contribute to the luminescence quenching. The [Eu(Al(3)Se)(3)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(2) complex presents an intermediate state whose energy difference with respect to the first excited singlet state is resonant with three phonons from the water molecules, favouring a multiphonon relaxation process from the singlet state followed by a fast internal conversion process; this effect is less pronounced in the complex with the ABSeCl ligand. The luminescence decay curves of the gadolinium complexes indicate that the level responsible for the intramolecular energy transfer process has a triplet character for both compounds. The nephelauxetic effect in these compounds was investigated under the light of a recently proposed covalency scale based on the concept of overlap polarizability of the chemical bond. Given the environmental concern over global warming that occurs mainly by emission of CO2 from the combustion of petroleum, coal and natural gas research focused on alternative and clean energy generation has been intensified. Among these, the highlight the solid oxide fuel cell intermediate temperature (IT-SOFC). For application as electrolyte of the devices doped based CeO2 with rare earth ions (TR+ 3) have been quite promising because they have good ionic conductivity and operate at relatively low temperatures (500-800 ° C). In this work, studied the Ce1-xEuxO2-δ (x = 0,1, 0,2 and 0,3), solid solutions synthesized by the polymeric precursor method to be used as solid electrolyte. It was also studied the processing steps of these powders (milling, compaction and two step sintering) in order to obtain dense sintered pellets with reduced grain size and homogeneous microstructure. For this, the powders were characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, particle size distribution and scanning electrons microscopy, since the sintered samples were characterized by dilatometry, scanning electrons microscopy, density and grain size measurements. By x-ray diffraction, it was verified the formation of the solid solution for all compositions. Crystallites in the nanometric scale were found for both sintering routes but the two step sintering presented significant reduction in the average grain size

Alternative and clean energy generation research has been intensified in last decades. Among the alternatives, fuel cells are one of the most important. There are different types of fuel cells, among which stands out intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) matter of the present work. For application as cathode on this type of devices, the ceramic Ba0.5Sr0.5C0.8Fe0.2O3-δ doped with rare earth ions (Nd, Sm) have been quite promising because they show good ionic conductivity and operate at relatively low temperatures (500 - 800°C). In this work, Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ, (BaSr)0.5Sm0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ and (BaSr)0.5Nd0.5C0.8Fe0.2O3-δ were obtained by modified Pechini method, making use of gelatin as polymerizing agent. The powders were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The perovskite phase was observed in all X-ray patterns for the materials Ba0.5Sr0.5C0.8Fe0.2O3-δ doped with rare earth ions (Nd, Sm). The SEM images showed that the materials have a characteristics porous, with very uniform pore distribution, which are favorable for application as cathodes. Subsequently, screen-printed assymmetrical cells were studied by impedance spectroscopy, to assess the kinetics of the cathode for the reduction reaction of oxygen. The best resistance to the specific area was found for the cathode BSSCF sintered at 1050 °C for 4 hours with around 0.15 Ω.cm2 at 750 °C as well as cathodes BSNCF and BSCF obtained resistances specific area of 0.2 and 0.73 Ω.cm2, respectively, for the same conditions. The polarization curves showed similar behavior to the best cathodes BSSCF and BSNCF, such combination of properties indicates that the film potentially depict good performance as IT-SOFC cathodes

Recent studies are investigating a new class of inorganic materials which arise as a promising option for high performance applications in the field of photoluminescence. Highlight for rare earth (TR +3 ) doped, which have a high luminous efficiency, long decay time and being able to emit radiation in the visible range, specific to each element. In this study, we synthesized ZrO2: Tb +3 , Eu +3 , Tm +3 nanoparticles complex polymerization method (CPM). We investigated the influences caused by the heat treatment temperature and the content of dopants in zirconia photoluminescent behavior. The particles were calcined at temperature of 400, 500 and 600 ° C for two hours and ranged in concentration of dopants 1, 2, 4 and 8 mol% TR +3 . The samples were characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence of measurements and uv-visible of spectroscopies. The results of X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of the tetragonal and cubic phases in accordance with the content of dopants. The photoluminescence spectra show emission in the region corresponding simultaneous to blue (450 nm), green (550 nm) and red (615 nm). According to the results, ZrO2 particles co-doped with rare earth ions is a promising material white emission with a potential application in the field of photoluminescence

Mesoporous molecular sieves of MCM-41 type are considered as promising support for metal in the refining processes of petroleum-based materials as catalysts and adsorbents for environmental protection. In this work, mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 were modified with different rare earth ions (La, Eu e Yb) for the obtaining nanostrutured materials with catalytic properties. The catalysts were synthesized by the hydrothermal method at 100oC for 120 h, presenting, all the samples, in the gel of synthesis molar ratio Si/Ln = 50. The obtained materials after calcination at 500oC for 2 h were characterized by XRD, surface area BET, TG/DTG, FTIR, and hydrothermal stability at 700ºC. The XRD analysis of the catalysts indicated that the materials containing rare earth presented characteristic hexagonal structure of the mesoporous materials of the type MCM-41. The TG curves showed that the decomposition of the structural template occurs in the materials at temperatures lower than 500oC. The samples presented variations as the specific superficial area, average diameter of pores and thickness of the silica wall, as a function of the nature of the rare earth impregnated in the mesoporous material. Hydrotermal stability was evaluated through the exposition of the materials to water vapour at 700°C. The thiophene adsorptions reach a maximum at 80% of conversion and incorporation of the rare earths showed influence in the process. Adsorption capacity followed the sequence: Yb-MCM-41 < La-MCM-41 < Eu-MCM-41 < MCM-41

Multicolor and white light emissions have been achieved in Yb3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+ triply doped heavy metal oxide glasses upon laser excitation at 980 nm. The red (660 nm), green (547 nm) and blue (478 nm) up conversion emissions of the rare earth (RE) ions triply doped TeO2-GeO2-Bi2O3-K2O glass (TGBK) have been investigated as a function of the RE concentration and excitation power of the 980 nm laser diode. The most appropriate combination of RE in the TGBK glass host (1.6 wt% Yb2O3, 0.6 wt% Tm2O3 and 0.1 wt% Ho2O3) has been determined with the purpose to tune the primary colors (RGB) respective emissions and generate white light emission by varying the pump power. The involved infrared to visible up conversion mechanisms mainly consist in a three-photon blue up conversion of Tm3+ ions and a two-photon green and red up conversions of Ho3+ ions. The resulting multicolor emissions have been described according to the CIE-1931 standards. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
