Background. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is a laboratory technique in which Salmonella DNA banding patterns are used as molecular fingerprints for epidemiologic study for "PFGE clusters". State and national health departments (CDC) use PFGE to detect clusters of related cases and to discover common sources of bacteria in outbreaks. ^ Objectives. Using Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) data, the study sought: (1) to describe the epidemiology of Salmonella in Houston, with PFGE subtype as a variable; and (2) to determine whether PFGE patterns and clusters detected in Houston were local appearances of PFGE patterns or clusters that occurred statewide. ^ Methods. During the years 2002 to 2005, the HDHHS collected and analyzed data from routine surveillance of Salmonella. We implemented a protocol, between May 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007, in which PFGE patterns from local cases were sent via e-mail to the Texas Department of State Health Services, to verify whether the local PFGE patterns were also part of statewide clusters. PFGE was performed from 106 patients providing a sample from which Salmonella was isolated in that time period. Local PFGE clusters were investigated, with the enhanced picture obtained by linking local PFGE patterns to PFGE patterns at the state and national level. ^ Results. We found that, during the years 2002 to 2005, there were 66 PFGE clusters, ranging in size from 2 to 22 patients within each cluster. Between different serotypes, there were marked differences in the sizes of PFGE clusters. A common source or risk factor was found in fewer than 5 of the 66 PFGE clusters. With the revised protocol, we found that 19 of 66 local PFGE patterns were indistinguishable from PFGE patterns at Texas DSHS. During the eight months, we identified ten local PFGE clusters with a total of 42 patients. The PFGE pattern for eight of the ten clusters matched the PFGE patterns for cases reported to Texas DSHS from other geographic areas. Five of the ten PFGE patterns matched PFGE patterns for clusters under investigation at PulseNet at the national level. HDHHS epidemiologists identified a mode of transmission in two of the ten local clusters and a common risk factor in a third local cluster. ^ Conclusion. In the extended-study protocol, Houston PFGE patterns were linked to patterns seen at the state and national level. The investigation of PFGE clusters was more efficacious in detecting a common transmission when local data were linked to state and national data. ^

The uranium content of glass from chilled margins of oceanic tholeiitic basalt flows is generally <0.1 ppm, even for old samples with highly altered crystalline interiors. Such low values represent the original whole rock concentrations, although subsequent to eruption low-temperature weathering has added uranium, and other elements, to the crystalline portions of these basalts. Consideration of the K/U ratios of altered samples suggests that basalt weathering may provide the major oceanic sink for these two elements.

This paper presents chlorine stable isotope compositions (delta37Cl) of sediment pore waters collected by squeezing sediment cores from the sediment-basement interface along an East-West transect through the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge (ODP Leg 168). These "near basement fluids" (NBF) are generally thought to be representative of low-temperature fluids circulating in the off-axis basaltic crust. The delta37Cl value of the fluid directly sampled from a flow at the base of Site 1026 (WSTP1026) is also reported. NBF display delta37Cl values between -2.09? and -0.12? relative to the Standard Mean Ocean Chloride (SMOC defined as 0?) and small variations in chlorinity (~4%). These data contrast with the homogeneity of delta37Cl values associated with highly variable chlorinities observed in high-temperature on-axis fluids [Bonifacie et al., 2005, doi:10.1016/j.chemgeo.2005.06.008]. The NBF delta37Cl values show a general decreasing trend with distance from the ridge-axis except for two fluids. When plotted against delta18O values, the delta37Cl of the NBF show two different trends. This paper discusses the possible contributions on NBF delta37Cl values of fluid-mixing, water-rock interactions and transport processes (diffusion, ion membrane filtration) that can occur in the igneous basement. However, as none of these processes can fully explain the observed delta37Cl variations, the potential effect of the sediment cover is also investigated. At site 1026, the interstitial pore fluid displays a delta37Cl signature significantly lower than that of the fluid discharge sample (-1.90? and -0.28?, respectively). This difference, demonstrated here cannot be an artifact of the sampling method, rather indicates the influence of the sediment cover on NBF delta37Cl values. The potential contributions of physical processes associated with transport/compaction (e.g., diffusion, ion membrane filtration, adsorption, ion exchange) on NBF delta37Cl values are qualitatively discussed here but require additional studies for further insights. However, this study indicates that "near basement fluids" (NBF) are not, at least for Cl isotopic compositions, necessarily as representative of fluids circulating in the basaltic crust as initially thought. These results add new constraints on Cl geodynamics and show that Cl-isotopes fractionate during low-temperature circulation of fluids in off-axis and off-margin flow contexts, but not to the extent observed for active margins. Fluids circulating at low-temperature in the magmatic and/or the sedimentary part of the oceanic crust might have played a major role on the delta37Cl evolution of seawater over geologic time.

Nearly complete Paleogene sedimentary sequences were recovered by Leg 114 to the subantarctic South Atlantic. Silicoflagellate assemblages from the Paleogene and immediately overlying lower Neogene from Sites 698 (Northeast Georgia Rise), 700 (East Georgia Basin), 702 (Islas Orcadas Rise), and 703 (Meteor Rise) were examined. The described assemblage from Hole 700B represents the most complete yet described from the Paleocene, encompassing planktonic foraminifer Zones Plb (upper part) through P4 and Subchrons C25N to C23N. All lower Eocene sediments are barren as a result of diagenesis, except for a single sample from Hole 698A. Middle Eocene silicoflagellates described from Hole 702B range in age from early middle Eocene (P10) to late Eocene (PI5), with correlations to Subchrons C21N to C18N. Hole 703A contains late Eocene through early Miocene assemblages, with paleomagnetic control from Subchrons C16R to C6AAN. Leg 114 biosiliceous sequences contain exceptionally diverse assemblages of silicoflagellates. Approximately 155 species and separate morphotypes are described from the Paleogene and earliest Neogene. New taxa described from Leg 114 sediments include Bachmannocena vetula n. sp., Corbisema animoparallela n. sp., Corbisema camara n. sp., Corbisema constricta spinosa n. subsp., Corbisema delicata n. sp., Corbisema hastata aha n. subsp., Corbisema praedelicata n. sp., Corbisema scapana n. sp., Corbisema triacantha lepidospinosa n. subsp., Dictyocha deflandreifurtivia n. subsp., Naviculopsis biapiculata nodulifera n. subsp., Naviculopsis cruciata n. sp., Naviculopsis pandalata n. sp., Naviculopsis primativa n. sp., and Naviculopsis trispinosa eminula n. subsp. Taxonomic revisions were made to the following taxa: Corbisema constricta constricta emended, Corbisema disymmetrica crenulata n. comb., Corbisema jerseyensis emended, and Distephanus antarcticus n. comb. Silicoflagellate assemblages from the Paleogene and earliest Neogene of Holes 698A, 699A, 700B, 702B, and 703A are the basis of a silicoflagellate zonation spanning the interval from 63.2 to 22.25 Ma. Silicoflagellate zones recognized in this interval include the Corbisema hastata hastata Zone, Corbisema hastata aha Zone, Dictyocha precarentis Zone, Naviculopsis constricta Zone, Naviculopsis foliacea Zone, Bachmannocena vetula Zone, Dictyocha grandis Zone, Naviculopsis pandalata Zone, Naviculopsis constricta-Bachmannocena paulschulzii Zone, Bachmannocena paulschulzii Zone, Naviculopsis trispinosa Zone with subzones a and b, Corbisema archangelskiana Zone, Naviculopsis biapiculata Zone, Distephanus raupii Zone, Distephanus raupii-Corbisema triacantha Zone, and Corbisema triacantha mediana Zone.
