AIM: To evaluate the influence of ovariectomy combined with lack of masticatory force in the evolution of periodontal disease induced in rats.METHODS: Forty rats were bilaterally ovariectomized and 40 were submitted to sham ovariectomy. Periodontal disease was induced in the mandibular left first molar and the maxillary left first molar was extracted from half of the rats. The rats were randomly euthanized at 3, 7, 14 and 30 days post periodontal disease induction. Serial sections were obtained from the furcation area and stained for histological and histomorphometric analysis. The results of the histomorphometric analysis were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey tests.RESULTS: The results demonstrated statistically significant differences in the percentage of bone tissue when the variables presence or absence of estrogen (p=0.020) and time of euthanasia (p=0.002) were evaluated. However, the extraction procedure did not significantly affect the percentage of bone tissue (p=0.598).CONCLUSIONS : The bone loss resulting from periodontal disease is increased by estrogen deficiency and varies according to the time course of periodontitis. In contrast, masticatory force does not seem to interfere in bone loss derived from periodontal disease.

Staphylococcus are not usually studied in the oral cavity, when this happens, they are considered to belong to transitory microflora. Individuals that present periodontal disease represent possibles reservoirs of these opportunist bacteria in the oral cavity. The use of antibiotics whether for treatment of periodontal disease or due to hospital infections, may predispose the increase of the Staphylococcus spp. in the oral cavity because they easily become resistant to antibiotics, resulting in superinfection. The study was made with 88 patients, minimum age- 25 years old, presenting chronical periodontitis, with, at least, two sites having a probing pocket bigger or equal to 5mm. After anamnese and clinical periodontal examination samples were taken from the periodontal pocket using paper cones and from the oral cavity using mouth rinse. Of the total patients 37,50% presented Staphylococcus spp. in the periodontal pocket and 61,36% in lhe oral cavity; 27,27% presented bacteria in the two sites, not necessarily of the same specie. S. epidermidis was the most prevailing specie in periodontal pocket (15,9%) and oral cavity (27,27%). Positive for S. aureus in the periodontal pocket were 4,5% and for the oral cavity 25%, and 3,4% were positive for the two sites. There was not found significative statistical difference referring to the presence of the microorganisms as to age, smoking habit and increase of the probing depth. The majority of the isolated Staphylococcus samples showed resistance to the tested antibiotics, indicating that the drugs as an adjunct to periodontal therapy, must be seen with caution

Objective: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the histological changes of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone during dental movement in diabetic rats subjected to low level laser therapy (LLLT).Methods: The movement of the upper molar was performed in 60 male Wistar rats divided into four groups (n = 15): CTR (control), DBT (diabetic), CTR/LT (irradiated control) and DBT/LT (irradiated diabetic). Diabetes was induced with alloxan (150 mg/kg, i.p.). LLLT was applied with GaAlAs laser at 780 nm (35 J/cm(2)). After 7, 13 and 19 days, the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone were histologically analyzed. Results: The mean of osteoblasts (p < 0.01) and blood vessels (p < 0.05) were significantly decreased in DBT compared with CTR at 7 days, whereas the mean of osteoclasts was lower at 7 (p < 0.001) and 13 days (p < 0.05). In DBT/LT, only the mean of osteoclasts was lower than in CTR (p < 0.05) at 7 days, but no difference was observed at 13 and 19 days (p > 0.05). The collagenization of the periodontal ligament was impaired in DBT, whereas DBT/LLT showed density/disposition of the collagen fibers similar to those observed in CTR.Conclusions: LLLT improved the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone remodeling activity in diabetic rats during dental movement. Objective: Our objective was to verify whether prenatal maternal periodontitis is a risk factor for the development of central nervous system disorders in rats. Methods: Periodontitis was induced by placing a ligature around the upper and lower first molars in 9 female Wistar rats (experimental group); 9 rats were left unligated (control group). The maternal general activity in an open field was observed on gestational day (GD) 0, GD 4, and GD 14, and the maternal performance was assessed on the second day after birth. The pups' play behavior was assessed on postnatal day 30. The relative level of reelin was measured in the frontal cortex by real-time PCR analysis. Results: The results showed that, compared with the control group, (1) the general activity in female rats with periodontitis was decreased, (2) the maternal performance of these rats was not modified by periodontitis, (3) the play behavior of pups from dams with periodontitis was decreased, and (4) there were no differences in the frontal cortex reelin levels of pups from dams with periodontitis. Conclusions: We conclude that pre- and postnatal periodontitis induces maternal sickness behavior and reduces the pups' play behavior without interference with frontal cortex reelin expression. Autogenous bone is still considered the gold standard, and the applicability of autogenous bone grafts is well established. However, the possibility of second harvesting from the same donor region remains unclear. The aim of this study was to perform a prospective evaluation of hard tissue deposition in the mandibular ramus after bone block harvesting using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Twenty-two patients with indications for augmentation procedures using autogenous bone from the mandibular ramus were selected. Three CBCT scans were performed with a tomographic guide before bone harvesting (T1) and at 14 days (T2) and 6 months (T3) after the surgical procedures. Measurements were obtained in 2D (area, mm(2)) and 3D (volume, mm(3)), and were subsequently compared. In the 2D analysis, the mean bone formation rate was 56%, while for the 3D analysis the mean rate was 9.7%. Despite this difference, there was a significant correlation between area and volume measurements. Our findings demonstrated the presence of hard tissue in the mandibular ramus at 6 months after bone harvesting, which suggests that it would be possible to reuse the same region for a second block harvesting. However, the second bone harvesting would involve less bone for transplantation when compared to the first bone harvesting.
