Diversity of the bacterial community in the surface soil of a pear orchard based on 16S rRNA gene analysis

A cultivation-independent approach based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified partial small subunit rRNA genes was used to characterize bacterial populations in the surface soil of a commercial pear orchard consisting of different pear cultivars during two consecutive growing seasons. Pyrus communis L. cvs Blanquilla, Conference, and Williams are among the most widely cultivated cultivars in Europe and account for the majority of pear production in Northeastern Spain. To assess the heterogeneity of the community structure in response to environmental variables and tree phenology, bacterial populations were examined using PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) followed by cluster analysis of the 16S ribosomal DNA profiles by means of the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic means. Similarity analysis of the band patterns failed to identify characteristic fingerprints associated with the pear cultivars. Both environmentally and biologically based principal-component analyses showed that the microbial communities changed significantly throughout the year depending on temperature and, to a lesser extent, on tree phenology and rainfall. Prominent DGGE bands were excised and sequenced to gain insight into the identities of the predominant bacterial populations. Most DGGE band sequences were related to bacterial phyla, such as Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, Nitrospirae, and Gemmatimonadetes, previously associated with typical agronomic crop environments

Comparison of Work Scheduling Using Constraint Programming or Auctions

Business processes designers take into account the resources that the processes would need, but, due to the variable cost of certain parameters (like energy) or other circumstances, this scheduling must be done when business process enactment. In this report we formalize the energy aware resource cost, including time and usage dependent rates. We also present a constraint programming approach and an auction-based approach to solve the mentioned problem including a comparison of them and a comparison of the proposed algorithms for solving them

Multifunctionality and Diversity in Bacterial Biofilms

Bacteria are highly diverse and drive a bulk of ecosystem processes. Analysis of relationships between diversity and single specific ecosystem processes neglects the possibility that different species perform multiple functions at the same time. The degradation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) followed by respiration is a key bacterial function that is modulated by the availability of DOC and the capability to produce extracellular enzymes. In freshwater ecosystems, biofilms are metabolic hotspots and major sites of DOC degradation. We manipulated the diversity of biofilm forming communities which were fed with DOC differing in availability. We characterized community composition using molecular fingerprinting (T-RFLP) and measured functioning as oxygen consumption rates, the conversion of DOC in the medium, bacterial abundance and the activities of five specific enzymes. Based on assays of the extracellular enzyme activity, we calculated how the likelihood of sustaining multiple functions was affected by reduced diversity. Carbon source and biofilm age were strong drivers of community functioning, and we demonstrate how the likelihood of sustaining multifunctionality decreases with decreasing diversity

Els tractaments habituals en la gestió d’estanys urbans són insostenibles tant ecològicament com econòmicament. Concretament es fa un estudi de naturalització d’estanys urbans de Barcelona mitjançant l’ús de les plantes macròfites aquàtiques de la regió, per tal de substituir els tractaments habituals que es fan a piscines públiques per tractaments similars als de les piscines naturals

Projecte de cultiu ecològic de plantes medicinals i aromàtiques, en una finca a Arenys de Mar (comarca del Maresme)

El cultiu de plantes medicinals i aromàtiques (PAM) a Catalunya és un cultiu minoritari, però podria ser una alternativa a cultius que cada vegada més són menys rendibles. La finca estudiada, situada al terme municipal d’Arenys de Mar, al Maresme, s'ha emprat per al cultiu de plantes hortícoles. Ara ja fa anys que la finca està inactiva, i el nou propietari s’ha interessat en el cultiu de PAM com a possibilitat de tornar a activar la finca, escollint com a sistema de producció, el cultiu ecològic . El projecte presenta el cultiu de quatre espècies de PAM ((Thymus vulgaris, Timó, Lavandula angustifolia, Lavanda, Mentha x piperita, Menta pebrera i Sàlvia comuna, Sàlvia), tenint en compte les seves necessitats i les característiques edafoclimàtiques de la zona, així com el mercat de les PAM, la normativa de producció ecològica i procurant utilitzar tot els mitjans existents a la finca per tal de minimitzar la inversió

Sistemas heterogéneos adaptativos basados en el contexto

Delivery context-aware adaptative heterogenous systems. Currently, many types of devices that have gained access to the network is large and diverse. The different capabilities and characteristics of them, in addition to the different characteristics and preferences of users, have generated a new goal to overcome: how to adapt the contents taking into account this heterogeneity, known as the “delivery context.” The concepts of adaptation and accessibility have been widely discussed and have resulted in many proposals, standards and techniques designed to solve the problem, making it necessary to refine the analysis of the issue to be considered in the process of adaptation. We present a tour of the various proposals and standards that have marked the area of heterogeneous systems works, and others who have worked since the real-time interaction through agents based platforms. Conceptions hiérarchiques des groupes : de la nature à la culture

RESUME En faisant référence à la notion de préjugé idéologique, ce travail s'intéresse à la manifestation d'une croyance qui oppose la culture à la nature lors de la classification et l'évaluation des individus. Nous proposons que cette croyance se manifeste par l'attribution de traits spécifiques aux groupes (traits culturels et naturels) et que sa fonction est de justifier la suprématie de l'homme bourgeois blanc occidental sur autrui. Ainsi, nous abordons la perception de plusieurs groupes ethniques de la part d'individus suisses. Notre travail est organisé en trois parties. La première partie présente une étude exploratoire dont l'objectif est de cerner les phénomènes étudiés. Les résultats mettent en évidence que l'attribution de traits culturels .positifs aux groupes ethniques est relativement indépendante de l'attribution de traits naturels positifs àceux-ci: les groupes perçus comme les plus culturels sont également perçus comme les plus naturels. De plus, l'attribution de traits naturels positifs semble sous-tendre une attitude favorable envers les groupes. La deuxième partie reprend les critères qu'identifient les notions de culture et de nature. Les études 2, 3 et 4 ont mis en évidence qu'il y au continuum dans la signification des traits par rapport à .l'être humain et à l'animal. Cela nous a amené sélectionner des traits attribués uniquement à l' être humain (culture) et des traits attribués davantage à l' animal qu'à l'être humain (nature). Les études 5 et 6 de la troisième partie montrent que, lorsqu'il est question de groupes ethniques, l'endogroupe dominant et ses alliés sont associés à la culture positive, alors que des exogroupes spécifiques sont associés à la nature positive (des exogroupes sujets au paternalisme). L'étude 7 confirme les résultats concernant l'endogroupe dominant et ses alliés avec des groupes fictifs et il met en évidence que les membres du groupe dominant utilisent la notion de culture positive pour hiérarchiser les groupes. L'attribution de nature positive n'est pas prise en compte pour hiérarchiser des groupes fictifs. Pour conclure, les études montrent qu'il n'y a pas d'opposition entre la culture et la nature (positives): les membres du groupe ethnique dominant utilisent la notion de culture pour classifier et évaluer les individus sur une hiérarchie de valeurs. La notion de nature n'est pas utilisée pour hiérarchiser les groupes, mais elle identifie des exogroupes spécifiques.

Tres notes sobre l’Ars predicandi populo de Francesc Eiximenis (autoria, datació i contingut) = Three notes on the Ars Predicandi populo of Francesc Eiximenis (authorship, date and content)

In spite of the fact that the Ars predicandi populo is attributed to Eiximenis in only one of the three extant manuscripts, there is no doubt that it is one of his works.First of all, the internal references to this treatise in the pages of Terç and Dotzè del Crestià are an irrefutable testimony and, secondly, the presence of an autographvolume of sermons which begins with the Ars in the inventory of the Eiximenis library made shortly after his death. The writing of the Ars and the collection of sermons which introduces it must be dated prior to the beginning of the Crestià encyclopedia (1379) because of the complexity that entailed the writing of a collection of three perhaps four volumes of sermons. Due to a series of formal and codicological reasons it must be concluded that the chapter entitled De consiliis circa predicacionem cannot be attributed to Eiximenis and thus be excluded from the Ars

Spermiogenesis particularities of a sperm storage species: Helicolenus dactylopterus (Teleostei: Scorpaenidae)

A study of the spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of Helicolenus dactylopterus was conducted. Females of this species have the capacity to store sperm within their ovaries, and male gametes have a considerable cytoplasmic mass surrounding their heads to survive the long period of intraovarian sperm storage. Our observations show that early spermatids are round-shaped cells and have a spherical nucleus with diffuse chromatin. The nuclear volume decreases as a result of progressive chromatin condensation during spermiogenesis, causing the nucleus to take on a U-shape. Flagellar insertion is not central to the nucleus but consistently occurs at an oblique angle towards one side of it. The flagellum is inserted into the nuclear fossa, without subsequent nuclear rotation. In mature spermatozoa, the flagellum is adjacent to the nucleus. A comparison of the spermatozoa in the testicular lobules and those in the intraovarian storage structures suggests that the increase in volume of the cytoplasmic mass may occur in the posterior region of the testis, in the testicular duct. Spermatozoa enter the ovary in groups that reach the ovarian lumen and are surrounded by the ovarian epithelium for storage in sperm storage crypts
