Double hydroxides of the formula, Ni1-xZn2x (OH)(2) (CO3)(x). nH(2)O (x = 0.1 to 0.25) having the same structure as that of alpha-nickel hydroxide have been synthesized by partial substitution of zinc for nickel. The hydroxide having the composition x = 0.25 exhibits prolonged stability in 6 M KOH. Pasted electrodes comprising this material are rechargeable with a stabilized reversible discharge capacity of 410 +/- 15 mAh g(-1) of nickel even under suboptimal conditions of electrode fabrication. This compares favorably with the capacity values achieved for beta-nickel hydroxide (221 mAh g(-1)', This work; 297 mAh g(-1), Delahaye-Vidal and Figlarz;(1) 456 mAh g(-1), theoretical). The effect of various parameters on the velocity of the induced jet produced by a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was studied experimentally. The glow discharge was created at atmospheric conditions by using a high voltage RF power supply. Flow visualization and photographic studies of the plasma were performed. The parametric investigation of the characteristics of the plasma show that the width of the plasma in the uniform glow discharge regime was an indication of the velocity induced under stagnant conditions. It was observed that the spanwise overlap of the two electrodes, dielectric thickness, voltage and frequency of the applied voltage are the major parameters that govern the velocity and the extent of plasma in the streamwise direction.

This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and studies of dendrimers possessing an amino acid-metal complex as the core. Using Frechet-type polyaryl ether dendrons, L-tyrosine-metal (Zn-II and Co-II) complex cored dendrimers of 0-4 generations were synthesized. The metal complexation of the tyrosine unit at the focal point of these dendrons took place smoothly, in excellent yields, even though the sizes of the dendrons increase as the generations advance. Spectrophotometric titrations with CoII metal ion confirmed the formation of a 2 : 1 dendritic ligand to metal complex and the existence of a pseudotetrahedral geometry at the metal centre is also inferred. Cyclic voltammetric studies of dendrimer-Co-II complexes showed that while the electron transfer of Co-II to Co-I was facile for generations 0-2, such a process was difficult with generations 3 and 4, indicating a rigid encapsulation of the metal ion centre by proximal dendron groups. Further reduction of Co-I to Co-0 and the corresponding oxidation processes appear to be limited by adsorption at the surfaces of the electrodes.
Electrical characterization of Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 thin films grown by pulsed laser ablation technique
Resumo:
In situ annealed thin films of ferroelectric Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 were deposited on platinum substrates by pulsed laser ablation technique. The as grown films were polycrystalline in nature without the evidence of any secondary phases. The polarization hysteresis loop confirmed the ferroelectricity, which was also cross-checked with the capacitance-voltage characteristics. The remnant polarization was about 5.9 muC cm(-2) at room temperature and the coercive field was 45 kV. There was a slight asymmetry in the hysteresis for different polarities, which was thought to be due to the work function differences of different electrodes. The dielectric constant was about 452 and was found to exhibit low frequency dispersion that increased with frequency, This was related to the space-charge polarization. The complex impedance was plotted and this exhibited a semicircular trace, and indicated an equivalent parallel R - C circuit within the sample. This was attributed to the grain response. The DC leakage current-voltage plot was consistent with the space-charge limited conduction theory, but showed some deviation, which was explained by assuming a Poole-Frenkel type conduction to be superimposed on to the usual space-charge controlled current. Electrochemical redox reactions of ferrous/ferric (Fe2+/Fe3+) and hydroquinone/quinone (H(2)Q/Q) were studied on Pt and polyaniline (PANI)-deposited Pt electrodes in 0.5 M H2SO4-supporting electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy. A comparison of the experimental data obtained with the Pt and PANI/Pt electrodes suggested that the reactions were catalyzed by the PANI. Based on a relative increase in peak currents of cyclic voltammograms, catalytic efficiency (gamma(cv)) of the PANI was defined. There was an increase in gamma(cv) with an increase of scan rate and a decrease of concentration of Fe2+/Fe3+ or H(2)Q. The complex plane impedance spectrum of the electrode consisted of a semicircle in high frequency range and a linear spike in low frequency range. The exchange current density (i(0)) calculated using the semicircle part of the impedance showed Butler-Volmer kinetics with respect to concentration dependence. From a relative increase of i(0) on the PANI/Pt electrode, catalytic efficiency (gamma(eis)) was evaluated. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Redox reactions which occur at positive potentials such as ferrous/ferric, hydroquinone/quinone, ferrocyanide/ferricyanide etc. in aqueous acidic electrolytes cannot be studied on non-platinum metals, for example, a Ni electrode. On the contrary, these reactions occur on polyaniline (PANI) modified Ni electrodes, as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry, amperometry and steady-state polarization experiments. Under identical experimental conditions of scan rate (v) and concentration (C), the peak current density (i(p)) values of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox reaction are greater on the PANI modified Ni than on Pt. Additionally, the peak potential separation (DeltaE(p)) of the voltammogram is lesser on the PANI modified Ni. With an increase in thickness of the PANI, DeltaE(p) increases suggesting that the redox reactions tend to depart from the reversibility. Scanning electron micrographs reveal the presence of a crystalline deposit of PANI on Ni when the thickness of PANI is about 0.08 mum. However, the PANI becomes amorphous and porous at higher thickness values. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies corroborate the observations made out of scanning electron microscopy. Higher catalytic activity of PANI is attributed to crystalline nature of PANI on Ni. Exchange current density and standard rate constant of Fe2+/Fe(3+)redox reaction are evaluated. The evaluation of the creep deformation and fracture behavior of a 2.25Cr-1Mo steel base metal, a 2.25Cr-1Mo/2.25Cr-1Mo similar weld joint, and a 2.25Cr-1Mo/Alloy 800 dissimilar weld joint at 823 K over a stress range of 90 to WO MPa has been carried out. The specimens for creep testing were taken from single-V weld pads fabricated by a shielded metal arc-welding process using 2.25Cr-1Mo steel (for similar-joint) and INCONEL 182 (for dissimilar-joint) electrodes. The weld pads were subsequently given a postweld hear treatment (PWHT) of 973 K for I hour. The microstructure and microhardness of the weld joints were evaluated in the as-welded, postweld heat-treated, and creep-tested conditions. The heat-affected zone (HAZ) of similar weld joint consisted of bainite in the coarse-prior-austenitic-grain (CPAG) region near the fusion line, followed by bainite in the fine-prior-austenitic-grain (FPAG) and intercritical regions merging with the unaffected base metal. In addition to the HAZ structures in the 2.25Cr-1Mo steel, the dissimilar weld joint displayed a definite INCONEL/2.25Cr-1Mo weld interface structure present either as a sharp line or as a diffuse region. A hardness trough was observed in the intercritical region of the HAZ in both weld joints, while a maxima in hardness was seen at the weld interface of the dissimilar weld joint. Both weld joints exhibited significantly lower rupture lives compared to the 2.25Cr-1Mo base metal. The dissimilar weld joint exhibited poor rupture life compared to the similar weld joint, at applied stresses lower than 130 MPa. In both weld joints, the strain distribution across the specimen gage length during creep testing varied significantly. During creep testing, localization of deformation occurred in the intercritical HAZ. In the similar weld joint, at all stress levels investigated, and in the dissimilar weld joint, at stresses greater than or equal to 150 MPa, the creep failure occulted in the intercritical HAZ. The fracture occurred by transgranular mode with a large number of dimples. At stresses below 150 MPa, the failure in the dissimilar weld joint occurred in the CPAG HAZ near to the weld interface. The failure occurred by extensive intergranular creep cavity formation.

LixCoOy films with x < 1 and y > 2 have been prepared by radio-frequency (rf) sputtering from high temperature (HT) LiCoO2 targets. Their structures have been examined with high resolution electron microscopy. Conductivities have been studied between 77 and 400 K. The electrochemical behaviour of film electrodes have been investigated with Li/LiClO4-PC/LixCoOy cells. The annealed films consist of nanocrystalline domains with amorphous boundaries. Electrical conductivities appear to arise from variable-range hopping (VRH) of holes. The films form good electrodes with operating potentials between 2.7 and 3.8 V. The observations have been discussed on the basis of a tentative and heuristic molecular orbital based energy band diagram. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Noble metal such as Ag normally exists in an fcc crystal structure. However as the size of the material is decreased to nanometer lengthscales, a structural transformation from that of its bulk state can be expected with new atomic arrangements due to competition between internal packing and minimization of surface energy. In many previous studies, it has been shown that silver nanowires (AGNWs) grown inside anodic alumina (AAO) templates by ac or dc electrochemical deposition from silver salts or complexes, adopt fcc structure and below some critical diameter ∼ 20 nm they may acquire hcp structure at low temperature. This is, however, critically dependant on the nature of confinement, as AgNWs grown inside nanotube confinement with subnanometer diameter have been reported to have fcc structure. Hence the question of the crystal structure of metal nanowires under combined influence of confinement, temperature and deposition condition remains open. In this abstract we show that the alternative crystal structures of AGNWs at room temperature can be achieved with electrochemical growth processes under specific conditions determined by the deposition parameters and nature of confinement. We fabricated AgNWs of 4H hexagonal structure with diameters 30 – 80 nm inside polycarbonate (PC) templates with a modified dc electrodeposition technique, where the nanowires were grown at deposition potentials as low as 10 mV in 2 M silver nitrate solution[1]. We call this low-potential electrodeposition (LPED) since the electrodeposition process occurs at potential much less than the standard Nernst potential (770 mV) of silver. Two types of electrodes were used – stainless steel and sputtered thin Pt film, neither of which had any influence on the crystal structure of the nanowires. EDS elemental analysis showed the nanowires to consist only of silver. Although the precise atomic dynamics during the LPED process is unclear at present, we investigated this with HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) characterization of nanowires grown over various deposition times, as well as electrical conductivity measurements. These experiments indicate that nanowire growth does not occur through a three-dimensional diffusion controlled process, as proposed for conventional over-potential deposition, but follow a novel instantaneous linear growth mechanism. Further experiments showed that, (a) conventional electrochemical growth at a small over-potential in a 2 mM AgNO3 solution yields nanowires with expected fcc structure inside the same PC templates, and (2) no nanowire was observed under the LPED conditions inside hard AAO templates, indicating that LPED-growth process, and hcp structure of the corresponding nanowires depend on deposition parameters, as well as nature of confinement.

Previous work involving the squeeze-film flow of a model paste substance, a mixture of clay particles and mineral oil commonly known as ‘Plasticine’, has suggested that it behaves as a simple Herschel-Bulkley fluid which exhibits little strain history. However, tensile measurements, which are naturally limited to small strains by the onset of necking, indicate that this material shows strain hardening. A two roll-mill is employed here to investigate the influence of larger extensional strains. The data are analysed using an available first order engineering plasticity solution. The results confirm that this material exhibits both extensional strain and strain rate hardening. This observed strain hardening effect, which is not observed in the squeeze-film experiments, is attributed, in part, to the more homogeneous deformation fields induced during rolling and tensile extension.

Metal stencils are well known in electronics printing application such as for dispensing solder paste for surface mounting, printing embedded passive elements in multilayer structures, etc. For microprinting applications using stencils, the print quality depends on the smoothness of the stencil aperture and its dimensional accuracy, which in turn are invariably related to the method used to manufacture the stencils. In this paper, fabrication of metal stencils using a photo-defined electrically assisted etching method is described. Apertures in the stencil were made in neutral electrolyte using three different types of impressed current, namely, dc, pulsed dc, and periodic pulse reverse (PPR). Dimensional accuracy and wall smoothness of the etched apertures in each of the current waveforms were compared. Finally, paste transfer efficiency of the stencil obtained using PPR was calculated and compared with those of a laser-cut electropolished stencil. It is observed that the stencil fabricated using current in PPR waveform has better dimensional accuracy and aperture wall smoothness than those obtained with dc and pulsed dc. From the paste transfer efficiency experiment, it is concluded that photo-defined electrically assisted etching method can provide an alternate route for fabrication of metal stencils for future microelectronics printing applications.

Characterizing the functional connectivity between neurons is key for understanding brain function. We recorded spikes and local field potentials (LFPs) from multielectrode arrays implanted in monkey visual cortex to test the hypotheses that spikes generated outward-traveling LFP waves and the strength of functional connectivity depended on stimulus contrast, as described recently. These hypotheses were proposed based on the observation that the latency of the peak negativity of the spike-triggered LFP average (STA) increased with distance between the spike and LFP electrodes, and the magnitude of the STA negativity and the distance over which it was observed decreased with increasing stimulus contrast. Detailed analysis of the shape of the STA, however, revealed contributions from two distinct sources-a transient negativity in the LFP locked to the spike (similar to 0 ms) that attenuated rapidly with distance, and a low-frequency rhythm with peak negativity similar to 25 ms after the spike that attenuated slowly with distance. The overall negative peak of the LFP, which combined both these components, shifted from similar to 0 to similar to 25 ms going from electrodes near the spike to electrodes far from the spike, giving an impression of a traveling wave, although the shift was fully explained by changing contributions from the two fixed components. The low-frequency rhythm was attenuated during stimulus presentations, decreasing the overall magnitude of the STA. These results highlight the importance of accounting for the network activity while using STAs to determine functional connectivity.

Ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC), piezoelectric polymer composites and nematic elastomer composites are materials, which exhibit characteristics of both sensors and actuators. Large deformation and curvature are observed in these systems when electric potential is applied. Effects of geometric non-linearity due to the chargeinduced motion in these materials are poorly understood. In this paper, a coupled model for understanding the behavior of an ionic polymer beam undergoing large deformation and large curvature is presented. Maxwell's equations and charge transport equations are considered which couple the distribution of the ion concentration and the pressure gradient along length of a cantilever beam with interdigital electrodes. A nonlinear constitutive model is derived accounting for the visco-elasto-plastic behavior of these polymers and based on the hypothesis that the presence of electrical charge stretches/contracts bonds, which give rise to electrical field dependent softening/hardening. Polymer chain orientation in statistical sense plays a role on such softening or hardening. Elementary beam kinematics with large curvature is considered. A model for understanding the deformation due to electrostatic repulsion between asymmetrical charge distributions across the cross-sections is presented. Experimental evidence that Silver(Ag) nanoparticle coated IPMCs can be used for energy harvesting is reported. An IPMC strip is vibrated in different environments and the electric power against a resistive load is measured. The electrical power generated was observed to vary with the environment with maximum power being generated when the strip is in wet state. IPMC based energy harvesting systems have potential applications in tidal wave energy harvesting, residual environmental energy harvesting to power MEMS and NEMS devices.
