The effects of self-seeding nucleation on the crystallization behavior and properties of polypropylene (iPP) were studied. DSC results indicated that the crystallization temperature of iPP increased obviously after the process of self-seeding nucleation. The results of polarized fight microscopy showed that the spherulite size decreased markedly, as a result, the mechanical properties and the transparency of iPP were all improved.

The crystallization behavior of PHBV, poly(beta -hydroxybutyrate-co-beta -hydrxyvalerate), with nucleating agents under isothermal conditions was investigated. A differential scanning calorimeter was used to monitor the crystallization process from the melt. During isothermal crystallization, the dependence of relative degree of crystallinity on time was described by the Avrami equation. It has been shown that the addition of BN and Tale causes a considerable increase in the overall crystallization rate of PHBV but does not influence the Avrami exponent n, mechanism of nucleation and spherulite growth mode of PHBV. A little of nucleating agent will increase the crystallization rate and decrease the fold surface free energy sigma (e), remarkably. The effect of BN is more significant than that of Talc.

Transition of crystalline structure and morphology of metallocene-catalyzed butyl branched polyethylene with branch content has been studied. It was found that the long periods of the branched polyethylene were controlled by crystallization conditions for the lower branch content samples and by branch contents for the higher branch content samples. When the branch content increased to a critical value the branched polyethylene had no long period because the crystalline morphology was changed from folded chain crystal to a bundled crystal. The TEM observations supported the results. The transition of the crystalline morphology resulted from the reduction of lamellar thickness with increasing of branch content since the branches were rejected from the lattice. The reduction of lamellar thickness with increasing of branch content also resulted in lattice expansion and decrease of melt temperature of the branched polyethylene. The micro-crystal morphology of the films of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) and iPP/P3DDT blend grown in different electrostatic environments has been investigated by using scanning electron microscope. The experimental results show that the micro-crystal morphology of polymer films was strongly dependent on electrostatic field. It was found that the micro-crystal morphology of the films of iPP, P3DDT and iPP/P3DDT blend grown in the electrostatic field was in the form of dendrite crystals, in which main stems were aligned in the field direction, and some branches of P3DDT were ruptured. However, the micro-crystals of the films of iPP, P3DDT and iPP/P3DDT blend have no crystal orientation in the absence of electrostatic field. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In an acidic aqueous solution of acetonitrile, the catalytic activity of the catalysts consisted of Pd(OAc)(2)/hydroquinone(HQ) with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) from various sources was obviously different in the oxidation of cyclohexene to cyclohexanone, The analysis of the FePc using IR spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and BET surface area measurement indicated that the catalytic activity of the multicomponent catalytic system composed of iron phthalocyanines depends on the amount of mu -oxo FePc, the crystallinity and the surface structure of iron phthalocyanine.

Physical aging of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) has been investigated. Heat flow responses were measured after annealing the amorphous samples obtained by quenching the melt into an ice-water bath close to, but below, the glass transition temperature. The extent of aging is related to the supercooling from the glass transition temperature and to the aging time. The activation energy of the aging process, which was estimated by a Williams-Watt expression, is similar in magnitude to that obtained for the cold crystallization for the aged samples. The quenched glass is a metastable glass. The conformation of molecular chains rearranges with physical aging which results in the formation of a denser packing in the amorphous phase. The dense amorphous phase may form an initial nucleus for crystallization. Isothermal cold crystallization of the aged samples was carried out. The Avrami equation was used to determine the kinetic parameters, and the Avrami constant n is about 2. An Arrhenius expression was used to evaluate the activation energy of relaxation upon physical aging and the activation energy of transportation upon isothermal crystallization. The activation energy of relaxation is similar in magnitude to that of crystallization for aged samples. Results obtained are interpreted as kinetic effects associated with the glass formation process.

In this paper, we report the optical properties of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in hydrosols and those of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in organosols in which the surfaces of the particles are coated by a layer of organic surfactant molecules. The photoluminescence spectra of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in the hydrosols and organosols in different conditions were measured and discussed. We conclude that the surface structure of the SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles affects their optical properties strongly. The oxygen deficiencies on the surface of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles play an important role in the optical properties. The surface modification of the particles effectively removes the surface defects of the particles and enhances the intensity of luminescence.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) was chosen for the investigation of the effect of metal ions on Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Metal ions that are preferentially bound to the oxygen atoms (MIO) have no effect on the intensity of ECL except for Al3+ and Y3+, whereas metal ions that are preferentially bound to the nitrogen atoms (MIN) preclude the oxidation of EDTA and decrease the ECL intensity.

The infrared spect ra of N-n-(4-nitrophenyl)azophenyloxyalkyldiethanolamines (Cn) are examined in the range of 4000-400 cm(-1) at different temperatures and the assignment of the fundamental vibrations given. Based on (1) the localization of the broad absorption band at 3456 cm(-1), and (2) attribution of the associated OH bands centred at 1410-1390, 1100, and 650-634 cm(-1) to, respectively delta OH deformation, nu C-O stretching and gamma OH out-of-plane bending, intermolecular hydrogen bonding between OH groups in the crystalline, liquid crystalline and isotropic states is proposed. By considering the results of FTIR, WAXD and DSC measurements, the molecular arrangement of C10 in its smectic A phase as consisting of hydrogen bonding and strong interaction between dipolar groups (NO,) is proposed. This may explain the high stability and high orientational ordering property of Cn compounds in the liquid crystalline state compared with that of n-bromo-1-[4-(4-nitrophenyl)azophenyl]oxyalkanes (Bn).

Crosslinking modification of polyimide, prepared from 3,3'4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxyl dianhydride (BTDA) and 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-diphenylenediamine (4MPDA), was performed by two methods, putting the polyimide in ambient environment for 4 months, and under UV irradiation for 2 or 8 h. The gas permeation properties of the crosslinked polyimides were investigated. The crosslinked polyimides induced by UV irradiation, in which crosslinking occurs in the surface layer, are of much higher gas permselectivity of hydrogen to nitrogen than that induced by the ambient environment, in which crosslinking takes place in the whole matrix, but their gas permeabilities for hydrogen are similar. The catalyst system neodymium phosphonate Nd(P-507)(3)/H2O/Al(i-Bu)(3) for the polymerization of styrene was examined. Effects of the addition order of the catalyst components, catalyst aging time and aging temperature on the catalyst activity and the polymer characteristics were investigated. The catalyst activity for isospecific polymerization of styrene increases with aging time and reaches the maximum with a catalyst aged for 45 min at 70 degrees C. The aging time that the catalyst needs to reach the highest activity for isospecific polymerization decreases with increasing aging temperature. The preformed catalyst and the in situ catalyst were compared with respect to the kinetic behavior of the styrene polymerization and the polymer characteristics.

This work probes the role of hydrogen bonds (such as O-H ... O and N-H ... O) in some inorganic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, such as HIO3, NH4H2PO4 (ADP), K[B5O6(OH)(4)] . 2H(2)O (KB5) and K2La(NO3)(5) . 2H(2)O (KLN), from the chemical bond standpoint. Second order NLO behaviors of these four typical inorganic crystals have been quantitatively studied, results show hydrogen bonds play a very important role in NLO contributions to the total nonlinearity. Conclusions derived here concerning the effect of hydrogen bonds on optical nonlinearities of inorganic crystals have important implications with regard to the utilization of hydrogen bonds in the structural design of inorganic NLO crystals. The toughening effect of the shell content of a core-shell latex polymer poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA)-cs-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on its blends with polycarbonate (PC) was studied. The changes of mechanical properties, morphology, and compatibility of the blends of PC/PBA-cs-PMMA with the change of the shell thickness of PBA-cs-PMMA were investigated. It is interesting to notice that mechanical properties of the blends are very sensitive to the shell thickness (i.e., shell content), and that there is a possibility to adjust the impact and tensile properties of the blend by selecting a PBA-cs-PMMA with a proper core/shell ratio. Hence, a modified PC material with balanced mechanical properties may be prepared.
