Some of the critical properties for a successful orthopedic or dental implant material are its biocompatibility and bioactivity. Pure titanium (Ti) and zirconium (Zr) are widely accepted as biocompatible metals, due to their non-toxicity. While the bioactivity of Ti and some Ti alloys has been extensively investigated, there is still insufficient data for Zr and titanium-zirconium (TiZr) alloys. In the present study, the bioactivity, that is, the apatite forming ability on the alkali and heat treated surfaces of Ti, Zr, and TiZr alloy in simulated body fluid (SBF), was studied. In particular, the effect of the surface roughness characteristics on the bioactivity was evaluated for the first time. The results indicate that the pretreated Ti, Zr and TiZr alloy could form apatite coating on their surfaces. It should be noted that the surface roughness also critically affected the bioactivity of these pretreated metallic samples. A surface morphology with an average roughness of approximately 0.6 microm led to the fastest apatite formation on the metal surfaces. This apatite layer on the metal surface is expected to bond to the surrounding bones directly after implantation.

The present work combines electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Schmid analysis to investigate secondary twinning in the magnesium alloy Mg-3AI-1Zn. Inspection of the misorientations between the parent matrix and {1011} - {1012} doubly twinned volumes reveals that there are four possible variants. One of these variants characterized by 38°< 1210 > misorientation with the matrix is favoured much more than the others. This variant involves activation of the secondary twinning systems that are quite inconsistent with the Schmid-type behaviour. For the secondary twin to grow significantly it must take on a shape enforced by the primary twin, however, this is not optimal for strain compatibility. It is argued that the 38° < 1210 > variant occurs most frequently because it provides the closest match between the primary and secondaty twinning planes, thus minimizing the compatibility strain. This conjecture is confirmed by the simulations of twin activity m ellipsoidal grains performed using the visco-plastic self-consistent crystal plasticity model.

Vickers and nano indentations were performed on a structurally relaxed Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass (BMG), and the evolution of the shear bands in the relaxed BMG was investigated and compared to that in the as-cast alloy. Results indicate that the plastic deformation in the BMG with structure relaxation is accommodated by the semicircular (primary) and radial (secondary) as well as tertiary shear bands. Quantitatively, the shear band density in the relaxed alloy was much lower than that in the as-cast alloy. The annihilation of free volume caused by the annealing was responsible for the embrittlement of the sample with structure relaxation.

Vickers indentations were carried out on an anneal-introduced partially crystallized Zr41Ti14Cu12.5 Ni10Be22.5 bulk metallic glass (BMG), and the evolution of the shear bands in this samplewas investigated and compared to the as-cast, aswell as the structurally relaxed counterparts. The results indicate that the plastic deformation in the partially crystallized BMG was accommodated by the semi-circular (primary) and radial (secondary) shear bands. A full crack or flake that was produced due to the spring back during the load removal was observed. The shear band density in the annealed alloy which was dispersed with crystalliteswas significantly lower than that of the as-cast alloy. The difference of the shear band features among the three kinds of alloy status, i.e., partially crystallized, structurally relaxed and as-cast alloys was discussed in terms of the free volume in the BMGs and the characteristics of nano-composites. It has been demonstrated that the plasticity for the three statuses of alloys queues in the descending order as the as-cast, annealed with partial crystallization, and annealed without crystallization.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) was coated on the surface of a titanium-niobium (Ti-Nb) alloy by a sol-gel process. Triethyl phosphite and calcium nitrate were used as the phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) precursors respectively to prepare a Ca/P sol solution. The Ti-Nb alloy was dip-coated in the sol and heated at 600°C for 30 minutes. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the major phase constituent of the coating after heat treatment was HA. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed that a few cracks were distributed on the HA coating. The in-vitro bioactivity of the HA coated Ti-Nb alloy was assessed using a cell culture of SaOS-2 osteoblast-like cells. The density of cell attachment was determined by MTT assay; the cell morphology was observed by SEM. Results indicated that the density of cell attachment on the surface of the Ti-Nb alloy was significantly increased by HA coating. Cell morphology observation showed that cells attached, spread and grew well on the HA coated surface. It can be concluded that the HA coating improved the in-vitro bioactivity of Ti-Nb alloy effectively.

Major characteristics of Magnesium alloy are low density (= 1.8 g/cm3) and excellent recyclability; therefore Mg is considered as one of low environmental loading materials. The low-density materials, such as Mg, are suitable for the transportation system to reduce the emission of Co2, save energy resource and increase the safety for accidents like corrosions. In the place, cellular materials like aluminum foams are also low-density materials and can be controlled the stress-strain relation. Combination of Mg alloy and cellular materials, that is Mg cell, is one of the most excellent materials for transportation system, because of its ultra low density. safeties, and recycle ability. To make the Mg cellular materials. there are some problems to solve. One is how to make them uniformly to supply them as same perfonnance materials. One is how to make them inexpensively. Most of cellular materials are very expensive because of there are many processes or special fabrication system to make them. To solve these problems. we investigated the press cell materials. The press cell material consists sheets pressed as cell shape and wall. Therefore, it is very easy to make cellular materials and control validation of the performance of each foam materials. In this paper, we simulated compression tests of this new type of Mg alloy cellular materials under dynamic loading to investigate the relation between the compression speed and the compression behavior to show the shock absorbing capability of this new foam material. It is very important to understand their mechanical properties relatcd with cell shapes and wall to be applied widely.

Researches the use of the electron back scattered diffraction analysis (EBSD) technique in investigating deformation modes in the magnesium alloy Mg-3Al-1Zn. Results showed the importance of non-basal slip, compression and double twinning during deformation of rolled Mg-3Al-1Zn. In as-cast material, twinning behaviour was more varied and complicated and could even occur upon unloading.

The deformation behaviour of magnesium alloy AZ31 was examined. The work found that dynamic recrystallisation operates during hot deformation. The influence that different process variables have on this mechanism were quantified. The optimisation of dynamic recrystallisation allows magnesium alloys to be formed into products more easily whilst developing enhanced final properties.

The present study has examined the thermodynamics of MgAl2O4 and MgO formations in Al–Mg alloy/quartz (>99% crystalline silica) through differential thermal analysis (DTA). The formation of MgAl2O4 and MgO is detected as exothermic peaks in the heat flow curve and the reaction is confirmed by the Si dissolution peaks observed during the reheating of samples and SEM analysis of the reacted sample. The presence of MgAl2O4 and MgO is confirmed in the XRD analysis of the reacted sample. The study has enabled the production of nano sized MgAl2O4 and MgO crystals at the interface of Al–Mg alloy and quartz. The reaction between them is found to be influenced by the oxidation of Mg, which is reduced by increasing heating rates.

The present study analyzes the morphological transformations of reaction products i.e., MgO, MgAl2O4 occurring during the reaction between SiO2 and Al-Mg alloy in Al-Mg-SiO2 composite processed by the liquid metallurgy technique. Different phases of platelet and hexagonal morphologies are detected and their composition analysis by EDS has confirmed them as being transition phases existing between MgO, MgAl2O4 and Al2O3. This study has also revealed the gradual transformation of (i) MgO needles to octahedral MgAl2O4 through Mg-Al-Si-O and Mg-Al-O transition phases having platelet morphologies and (ii) MgAl2O4 to Al2O3 through hexagonal transition phases on holding of Al-5Mg-SiO2 and Al-1Mg-SiO2 composites respectively at 1023K. Fully developed α-Al2O3 crystals are not observed under the present experimental conditions, wherein the Mg content is well above the equilibrium Mg content required for the formation of stable Al2O3 (<0.05 wt. %).

This work focuses on the deformation behavior of an ultra-fine grained Al-Mg-Si alloy processed by equal channel angular pressing over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates. The effect of temperature and strain rate on the homogeneity of plastic deformation, the evolution of microstructure, the strain rate sensitivity and the underlying deformation mechanisms are investigated. It is demonstrated that the localization of plastic deformation at the micro scale is triggered by grain boundary sliding due to grain boundary sliding due to grain boundary diffusion. The contributions of different deformation mechanisms during the plastic deformation of the material are discussed.

The deformation behaviour of the age hardenable alloy Mg–5%Zn after different precipitation treatments has been examined. It has been found that during compressive deformation, fine particles increase the number of twins that form, but reduce the size and total volume fraction of twins. Visco-plastic selfconsistent modelling has been used to show that the presence of precipitates hardens the twin and prismatic slip systems more than the basal slip system. It is proposed that because the {10 ¯12} twin requires basal slip to accommodate the twinning shear, this twin type will always be hardened equal to, or more than, the basal slip system in response to precipitation.

Interrupted hot compression tests are employed to examine the kinetics of recrystallization in magnesium alloy Mg–3Al–1Zn. It is found that recrystallization results in an increase in the flow stress encountered in subsequent deformation. The increase in flow stress is used to infer the fraction of recrystallization and empirical equations are developed to describe the kinetics.

An Al70Ni10Ti10Zr5Ta5 amorphous alloy powder was fabricated by mechanical alloying. The phase structure and characteristic temperatures of the alloy were determined by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The glass transition behavior and crystallization kinetics were analyzed using Lasocka and Kissinger functions. The results show that the alloy has a higher crystallization temperature, a higher effective activation energy of crystallization and a wider supercooled liquid region than the previously reported values, suggesting a high thermal stability and promising applications.

An electrochemical approach to the formation of a protective surface film on Mg alloys immersed in the ionic liquid (IL), trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium–bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate, was investigated in this work. Initially, cyclic voltammetry was used with the Mg alloy being cycled from OCP to more anodic potentials. EIS data indicate that, under these circumstances, an optimum level of protection was achieved at intermediate potentials (e.g., 0 or 0.25 V versus Ag/AgCl). In the second part of this paper, a small constant bias was applied to the Mg alloy immersed in the IL for extended periods using a novel cell design. This electrochemical cell allowed us to monitor in situ surface film formation on the metal surface as well as the subsequent corrosion behaviour of the metal in a corrosive medium. This apparatus was used to investigate the evolution of the surface film on an AZ31 magnesium alloy under a potential bias (between ±100 mV versus open circuit) applied for over 24 h, and the film evolution was monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A film resistance was determined from the EIS data and it was shown that this increased substantially during the first few hours (independent of the bias potential used) with a subsequent decrease upon longer exposure of the surface to the IL. Preliminary characterization of the film formed on the Mg alloy surface using ToF-SIMS indicates that a multilayer surface exists with a phosphorous rich outer layer and a native oxide/hydroxide film underlying this. The corrosion performance of a treated AZ31 specimen when exposed to 0.1 M NaCl aqueous solution showed considerable improvement, consistent with electrochemical data.
