In recent years, a plethora of approaches have been proposed to deal with the increasingly challenging task of multi-output regression. This paper provides a survey on state-of-the-art multi-output regression methods, that are categorized as problem transformation and algorithm adaptation methods. In addition, we present the mostly used performance evaluation measures, publicly available data sets for multi-output regression real-world problems, as well as open-source software frameworks.

When it comes to information sets in real life, often pieces of the whole set may not be available. This problem can find its origin in various reasons, describing therefore different patterns. In the literature, this problem is known as Missing Data. This issue can be fixed in various ways, from not taking into consideration incomplete observations, to guessing what those values originally were, or just ignoring the fact that some values are missing. The methods used to estimate missing data are called Imputation Methods. The work presented in this thesis has two main goals. The first one is to determine whether any kind of interactions exists between Missing Data, Imputation Methods and Supervised Classification algorithms, when they are applied together. For this first problem we consider a scenario in which the databases used are discrete, understanding discrete as that it is assumed that there is no relation between observations. These datasets underwent processes involving different combina- tions of the three components mentioned. The outcome showed that the missing data pattern strongly influences the outcome produced by a classifier. Also, in some of the cases, the complex imputation techniques investigated in the thesis were able to obtain better results than simple ones. The second goal of this work is to propose a new imputation strategy, but this time we constrain the specifications of the previous problem to a special kind of datasets, the multivariate Time Series. We designed new imputation techniques for this particular domain, and combined them with some of the contrasted strategies tested in the pre- vious chapter of this thesis. The time series also were subjected to processes involving missing data and imputation to finally propose an overall better imputation method. In the final chapter of this work, a real-world example is presented, describing a wa- ter quality prediction problem. The databases that characterized this problem had their own original latent values, which provides a real-world benchmark to test the algorithms developed in this thesis.

The attention on green building is driven by the desire to reduce a buildingâs running cost over its entire life cycle. However, with the use of sustainable technologies and more environmentally friendly products in the building sector, the construction industry contributes significantly to sustainable actions of our society. Different certification systems have entered the market with the aim to measure a buildingâs sustainability. However, each system uses its own set of criteria for the purpose of rating. The primary goal of this study is to identify a comprehensive set of criteria for the measurement of building sustainability, and therefore to facilitate the comparison of existing rating methods. The collection and analysis of the criteria, identified through a comprehensive literature review, has led to the establishment of two additional categories besides the 3 pillars of sustainability. The comparative analyses presented in this thesis reveal strengths and weaknesses of the chosen green building certification systems - LEED, BREEAM, and DGNB.

Two new methodologies are introduced to improve inference in the evaluation of mutual fund performance against benchmarks. First, the benchmark models are estimated using panel methods with both fund and time effects. Second, the non-normality of individual mutual fund returns is accounted for by using panel bootstrap methods. We also augment the standard benchmark factors with fund-specific characteristics, such as fund size. Using a dataset of UK equity mutual fund returns, we find that fund size has a negative effect on the average fund managerâs benchmark-adjusted performance. Further, when we allow for time effects and the non-normality of fund returns, we find that there is no evidence that even the best performing fund managers can significantly out-perform the augmented benchmarks after fund management charges are taken into account.

High quality, pure DNA is required for ensuring reliable and reproducible results in molecular diagnosis applications. A number of in-house and commercial methods are available for the extraction and purification of genomic DNA from faecal material, each one offering a specific combination of performance, cost-effectiveness, and easiness of use that should be conveniently evaluated in function of the pathogen of interest. In this comparative study the marketed kits QIAamp DNA stool mini (Qiagen), SpeedTools DNA extraction (Biotools), DNAExtract-VK (Vacunek), PowerFecal DNA isolation (MoBio), and Wizard magnetic DNA purification system (Promega Corporation) were assessed for their efficacy in obtaining DNA of the most relevant enteric protozoan parasites associated to gastrointestinal disease globally. A panel of 113 stool specimens of clinically confirmed patients with cryptosporidiosis (n = 29), giardiasis (n = 47) and amoebiasis by Entamoeba histolytica (n = 3) or E. dispar (n = 10) and apparently healthy subjects (n = 24) were used for this purpose. Stool samples were aliquoted in five sub-samples and individually processed by each extraction method evaluated. Purified DNA samples were subsequently tested in PCR-based assays routinely used in our laboratory. The five compared methods yielded amplifiable amounts of DNA of the pathogens tested, although performance differences were observed among them depending on the parasite and the infection burden. Methods combining chemical, enzymatic and/or mechanical lysis procedures at temperatures of at least 56 °C were proven more efficient for the release of DNA from Cryptosporidium oocysts.

CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Pathfinder Satellite Observations) Level 3 (CL3) data were compared against EARLINET (European Aerosol Research Lidar Network) monthly averages obtained by profiles during satellite overpasses. Data from EARLINET stations of Ãvora, Granada, Leipzig, Naples and Potenza, equipped with advanced multi-wavelength Raman lidars were used for this study. Owing to spatial and temporal differences, we reproduced the CL3 filtering rubric onto the CALIPSO Level 2 data. The CALIPSO monthly mean profiles following this approach are called CALIPSO Level 3*, CL3*. This offers the possibility to achieve direct comparable datasets. In respect to CL3 data, the agreement typically improved, in particular above the areas directly affected by the anthropogenic activities within the planetary boundary layer. However in most of the cases a subtle CALIPSO underestimation was observed with an average bias of 0.03 km-1. We investigated the backscatter coefficient applying the same screening criteria, where the mean relative difference in respect to the extinction comparison improved from 15.2% to 11.4%. Lastly, the typing capabilities of CALIPSO were assessed outlining the importance of the correct aerosol type (and associated lidar ratio value) assessment to the CALIPSO aerosol properties retrieval.

Geophysical surveying and geoelectricalmethods are effective to study permafrost distribution and conditions in polar environments. Geoelectrical methods are particularly suited to study the spatial distribution of permafrost because of its high electrical resistivity in comparison with that of soil or rock above 0 °C. In the South Shetland Islands permafrost is considered to be discontinuous up to elevations of 20â40ma.s.l., changing to continuous at higher altitudes. There are no specific data about the distribution of permafrost in Byers Peninsula, in Livingston Island, which is the largest ice-free area in the South Shetland Islands. With the purpose of better understanding the occurrence of permanent frozen conditions in this area, a geophysical survey using an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT)methodologywas conducted during the January 2015 field season, combined with geomorphological and ecological studies. Three overlapping electrical resistivity tomographies of 78meach were done along the same profile which ran from the coast to the highest raised beaches. The three electrical resistivity tomographies are combined in an electrical resistivitymodel which represents the distribution of the electrical resistivity of the ground to depths of about 13malong 158m. Several patches of high electrical resistivity were found, and interpreted as patches of sporadic permafrost. The lower limits of sporadic to discontinuous permafrost in the area are confirmed by the presence of permafrost-related landforms nearby. There is a close correspondence between moss patches and permafrost patches along the geoelectrical transect.

Gait analysis allows to characterize motor function, highlighting deviations from normal motor behavior related to an underlying pathology. The widespread use of wearable inertial sensors has opened the way to the evaluation of ecological gait, and a variety of methodological approaches and algorithms have been proposed for the characterization of gait from inertial measures (e.g. for temporal parameters, motor stability and variability, specific pathological alterations). However, no comparative analysis of their performance (i.e. accuracy, repeatability) was available yet, in particular, analysing how this performance is affected by extrinsic (i.e. sensor location, computational approach, analysed variable, testing environmental constraints) and intrinsic (i.e. functional alterations resulting from pathology) factors. The aim of the present project was to comparatively analyze the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the performance of the numerous algorithms proposed in the literature for the quantification of specific characteristics (i.e. timing, variability/stability) and alterations (i.e. freezing) of gait. Considering extrinsic factors, the influence of sensor location, analyzed variable, and computational approach on the performance of a selection of gait segmentation algorithms from a literature review was analysed in different environmental conditions (e.g. solid ground, sand, in water). Moreover, the influence of altered environmental conditions (i.e. in water) was analyzed as referred to the minimum number of stride necessary to obtain reliable estimates of gait variability and stability metrics, integrating what already available in the literature for over ground gait in healthy subjects. Considering intrinsic factors, the influence of specific pathological conditions (i.e. Parkinsonâs Disease) was analyzed as affecting the performance of segmentation algorithms, with and without freezing. Finally, the analysis of the performance of algorithms for the detection of gait freezing showed how results depend on the domain of implementation and IMU position.
