A new genus, Weketrema, is erected in the family Lecithasteridae for the species hitherto known as Lecithophyllum hawniiense. Weket, ema hawaiiense (Yamaguti, 1970) comb, n. is redescribed from Scolopsis bilineatus (Bloch) (Perciformes: Nemipteridae) from Lizard Island and Heron Island, Queensland, Plectorhinchus gibbosus (Lacepede) (Perciformes: Haemulidae) from Heron Island and Cheilodactylus nigripes Richardson (Perciformes: Cheilodactylidae) and Latridopsis forsteri (Castelnau) (Perciformes: Latridae) from Stanley, northern Tasmania. The new genus is distinguished from related members of the family Lecithasteridae by its complete lack of a sinus-sac. Although placed in the subfamily Lecithasterinae pro tem, its true subfamily position is not entirely clear. Comment is made on its unusual distribution, both in terms of zoogeography and hosts.

Solid-state C-13 NMR spectroscopy was used to investigate the three-dimensional structure of melittin as lyophilized powder and in ditetradecylphosphatidylcholine (DTPC) membranes. The distance between specifically labeled carbons in analogs [1-C-13]Gly3-[2-C-13]Ala4, [1-C-13]Gly3-[2-C-13]Leu6, [1-C-13]Leu13-[2-C-13]Ala15, [2-C-13]Leu13-[1-C-13]Ala15, and [1-C-13]Leu13-[2-C-13]Leu16 was measured by rotational resonance. As expected, the internuclear distances measured in [1-C-13]Gly3-[2-C-13]Ala4 and [1-C-13]Gly3-[2-C-13]Leu6 were consistent with alpha -helical structure in the N-terminus irrespective of environment. The Internuclear distances measured in [1-C-13]Leu13-[2-C-13]Ala15, [2-C-13]Leu13-[1-C-13]Ala15, and [1-C-13]Leu13-[2-C-13]Leu16 revealed, via molecular modeling, some dependence upon environment for conformation in the region of the bend in helical structure induced by Pro14. A slightly larger interhelical angle between the N- and C-terminal helices was indicated for peptide in dry or hydrated gel state DTPC (139 degrees -145 degrees) than in lyophilized powder (121 degrees -139 degrees) or crystals (129 degrees). The angle, however, is not as great as deduced for melittin in aligned bilayers of DTPC in the liquid-crystalline state (similar to 160 degrees) (R. Smith, F. Separovic, T. J. Milne, A. Whittaker, F. M. Bennett, B. A. Cornell, and A. Makriyannis, 1994, J. Mol, Biol 241:456-466). The study illustrates the utility of rotational resonance in determining local structure within peptide-lipid complexes.

Geographical information systems (GIS) coupled to 3D visualisation technology is an emerging tool for urban planning and landscape design applications. The utility of 3D GIS for realistically visualising the built environment and proposed development scenarios is much advocated in the literature. Planners assess the merits of proposed changes using visual impact assessment (VIA). We have used Arcview GIS and visualisation software: called PolyTRIM from the University of Toronto, Centre for Landscape Research (CLR) to create a 3D scene for the entrance to a University campus. The paper investigates the thesis that to facilitate VIA in planning and design requires not only visualisation, but also a structured evaluation technique (Delphi) to arbitrate the decision-making process. Three new amino alcohols presumably deriving from L-alanine were isolated from the tropical marine sponge Haliclona n. sp. and characterized by 2D NMR, while a fourth amino alcohol was characterized as an acetamide derivative. Relative stereochemistry was deduced from the NMR characteristics of oxazolidinone derivatives and absolute stereochemistry secured by preparation and analysis of an MPA ester. The amino alcohol fraction from Haliclona n. sp, acts as an antifungal agent and inhibits the development of larvae of the ascidian Herdmania curvata.

The biosynthetic origins of the isocyanide and isothiocyanate groups in 9-isocyanop upukeanane (2) and 9-isothiocyanato-pupukeanane (3) are investigated by incorporation of [C-14]-labelled advanced precursors into the sponge Axinyssa n.sp. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Five new chlorinated peptides (5)-(9) have been isolated from a Dysidea sp. and identified by two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The absolute stereochemistry of the metabolites was deduced by chemical correlation with S-(-)-4,4,4-trichloro-3-methylbutanoic acid (10) and with an alcohol (11). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Recent studies have demonstrated the occurrence of elevated levels of higher chlorinated PCDDs in the coastal environment of Queensland, Australia. This study presents new data for OCDD contamination and full PCDD/F profile analysis in the environment of Queensland. Marine sediments, irrigation drain sediments and topsoil were collected from sites that were expected to be influenced by specific land-use types. High OCDD concentrations were associated mainly with sediments collected near the mouth of rivers which drain into large catchments in the tropical and subtropical regions. Further, analysis of sediments from irrigation drains could be clearly differentiated on the basis of OCDD contamination, with high concentrations in samples from sugarcane drains collected from coastal regions, and low concentrations in drain sediments from drier inland cotton growing areas. PCDD/F congener-specific analysis demonstrated almost identical congener profiles in all samples collected along the coastline. This indicates the source to be widespread. Profiles were dominated by higher chlorinated PCDDs, in particular OCDD whereas 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDFs were below the limit of quantification in the majority of samples. The full PCDD/F profile analysis of samples strongly resemble those reported for lake sediments from Mississippi and kaolinite samples from Germany, Strong similarities to these samples with respect to congener profiles and isomer patterns may indicate the presence of a similar source and/or formation process that is yet unidentified. Now that some of the genes involved in asthma and allergy have been identified, interest is turning to how genetic predisposition interacts with exposure to environmental risk factors. These questions are best answered by studies in which both genotypes and other risk factors are measured, but even simpler studies, in which family history is used as a proxy for genotype, have made suggestive findings. For example, early breast feeding may increase the risk of allergic disease in genetically susceptible children, and decrease the risk of 'sporadic' allergy. This review also addresses the overall importance of genetic causes of allergic disease in the general population.
