The status epilepticus (SE) is characterized by a series of crises which occur without recovery of consciousness or a single seizure lasting more than 30 minutes and can damage the central nervous system and systemic. The duration and frequency of attacks are directly related to patient prognosis. Whether seizures occur often and are longer, increase the risk of neurological and systemic complications. Child population has a higher frequency of seizures and it is associated with a lower threshold of immature brain to trigger these episodes. Aim: To determine the safest drugs prescribed for children in SE, their doses and schedules. A bibliographic survey was performed in electronic databases. Methods: The scientific health descriptors used for search was: “status epilecticus” and “anticonvulsivants” and “child”. Results: This strategy identified 396 manuscripts, of whom four were considered eligible for the study, after the assessment by floating reading and criteria. Of these, two were randomized trials and two descriptive. The studies address the use of oral midazolam, rectal diazepam and intravenous lorazepam. Conclusions: All investigated drugs were effective in treat in status epilepticus. Lorazepam is highlight, since it has fewer secondary effects and, as an alternative to the intravenous, oral midazolam. However, there is a need for further studies to demonstrate the efficacy and safety in the use of drugs in children.

Avaliações farmacoeconômicas em vigilância de medicamentos

The study aimed to identify pharmacoeconomic studies in pharmacovigilance and to observe the economic outcomes in post-marketing surveillance. Therefore, a bibliographic survey was performed in databases Lilacs, PubMed/ Bireme. The search strategy was done by using scientific health descriptors [ "adverse drug reaction reporting systems " OR " medication errors " OR "product surveillance, postmarketing" OR " sentinel surveillance" ] AND [ " cost-benefit analysis" OR "cost efficiency analysis " OR " costs and cost analysis " OR " hospital costs " OR " cost-effectiveness " OR " cost-effectiveness evaluation " OR " drug costs " ]. Manuscripts published in the last 10 years were selected. We chose 13 articles, of which 12 corresponded to cost-benefit analysis and only one to cost-effectiveness assessment. In only one study there was no economy, all the other ones generated savings, ranging from 13.7 to 30% in spending valued service. Surveillance actions were: continuing education; active search through tracking devices and / or implementation of round; teamwork and multidisciplinary deployment; computerized security services management, enabling traceability of information and alerts. The results of the proposed actions have led to the prevention of adverse drug reactions, to decline of risks to the patient, to the reduction of inappropriate prescriptions, as well as the length of hospital stay spending valued service. Mediación y legitimación en la crítica literaria de Otto Maria Carperaux

The work and the trajectory of literary critic and journalist Austrian-Brazilian Otto Maria Carpeaux (1900-1978) are studied from the relationship between literary criticism and the diffusion field in Brazil. Between the decades of 1940-1970, Carpeaux has played a prominent role in the formation process of the reader and reading in Brazil, as evidenced by his intense activity as a critic and essayist. Will also be developed reflections on the place occupied by Carpeaux in the field of criticism in Brazil. Two hypotheses are developed: a) Carpeaux`s work was affected by a lack of legitimacy of his contemporaries in the decades of 1940-1950, as can be seen, for example, in peripheral treating conferred on him by the field of diffusion and consecration instances we can read, the editorial market. b) Carpeaux such as an Alvaro Lins`s heir in the Correio da Manha, also inherited a criticism model that lost prestige in the light of the New Criticism growing influence occurred in the country, which shifts the critical role from the newspaper to the university.

This work aims to analyze the Wið Færstice, a charm from the anglo-saxon literature, translated as Charm for a sudden Stich. Inside of the imaginarium in this context, the refered pain is assigned to a dart shooted by an elf, witch or pagan god. This charm is included in the anglo-saxon medicine manuscripts andwas wrtitten in form of poetry, presenting characteristics of the poetic work, presenting aspects of the poetic do that once considered historical, cultural and artistic issues concerning the people and the Anglo-Saxon culture, indicate a close relationship between poetry as a form of thought and knowledge and magic as a way of interpreting the world. At this respect we call here, for methodological purposes, incantatory power of the word. From the analysis of this referred enchantment, as well as of the elements in the text, is intended to demonstrate how articulates this incantatory power of words and how to give, within the Anglo-Saxon conception of the Sacred, the transformation of reality through the pronouncement of words

William Boyce White, Jr. Papers - Accession 1488

The William Boyce White, Jr. Papers consists of his genealogical research as well as his research related to the history of York County and Rock Hill, SC. The papers also include records and manuscripts relating to several of his published works. Mr. White is a Rock Hill native and taught at the Winthrop Training School (WTS) from 1958-1965 and taught at Rock Hill High School following the closing of the high school portion of the WTS. He also taught in Clover before coming to Winthrop. He was the organist at First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill from 1945 until he moved to Virginia. His interest in local history covers the Rock Hill train depot (included in the collection is a tintype of the original depot ca. 1860s), Colonel William Hill, the Catawba River, Catawba Indians, Rock Hill and York County schools, historic homes (includes several photographs, many of which were used by Elizabeth Reed in her long running series on historic homes in Rock HillEvening Herald), local churches, as well as Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Blackstocks, and York County in general. Of special interest is a copy of the Indian Land Chronicle dated January 21, 1859. Only three copies of the Chronicle are known to exist in the state of South Carolina. The genealogical research conducted by Mr. White covers many of the prominent names of York County and of South Carolina in general. The Matt Christopher Papers consist of published manuscripts, published short stories (1943-1994) (drafts, synopses, plot outlines, and magazines, comics, and newspapers with articles and short stories), galleys (1954-1990s), leather bound author’s editions (1954-1991), and publisher’s editions of Matt Christopher’s children’s books (1954-2004). The collection contains many unpublished manuscripts and drafts outside the children’s book field (1954-1997), unpublished poems (1938-1993), unpublished screenplays (1940-1997), and unpublished short stories (1954-1997). Also included are taped (audio and video) interviews of Matt Christopher, as well as, puzzles for children (1988-1992), research materials and notes (1954-1997), sports rule-books (1954-1995), and writing guides (1909-1995), personal (1949-1997) and business correspondence (1952-2002), contract agreements (1952-1993), royalty statements (1954-1999), and biographical information (1917-2004), memorabilia (personalized baseball bat, framed pictures and award certificates, etc.), fan mail (1964-1999) and his personal book collection (1847-1995) (some signed by authors).

The collection includes personal photographs, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, research and information on specific foods, recipes, drafts and published editions of manuscripts, class notes and student files. There is also information concerning the American Dietetic Association, the South Carolina Dietetic Association, the Piedmont Dietetic Association, the American Home Economics Association, and the South Carolina Home Economics Association, including conference material, memos, and correspondence. Miss London was president of the South Carolina Dietetic Association in 1967.

James Pinckney Kinard Papers - Accession 8

The James Pinckney Kinard Papers consist of family history charts of the Kinard family and related Kuhn and Summer families, and a Kinard family history, personal correspondence including letters to and from his wife Lee Wicker Kinard (1873-1963), their daughter Nelle Kinard, and other family members, business correspondence, financial papers, literary manuscripts, scrapbooks, and photographs pertaining to Kinard’s student days at the Citadel, his personal and family affairs, his teaching career, his presidency of Winthrop, and his efforts to get his literary manuscripts published. This collection consists primarily of correspondence and offers an informative insight into the personal lives and family affairs of Dr. Kinard and his wife, Mrs. Lee Wicker Kinard. The correspondence generally deals with Dr. Kinard’s struggle against the South Carolina legislature’s cuts in educational appropriations for Winthrop during the Depression; and his varied activities on behalf of Winthrop as President Emeritus. The collection also includes several unpublished manuscripts ranging from his student days at the Citadel to his later life. Areas of research would perhaps include, among others, biographical information on Dr. Kinard and social history during the Depression.

The Nolan Pliny Jacobson Papers consist of manuscripts, articles, book reviews, photographs, and correspondence largely related to his philosophical writings, projects, and travels. The correspondence comprises the largest part of the collection and his correspondents are mostly with philosophy and religion professors from all around the world (mostly the Far East) which offers a valuable source on academic life and professional relationships.

Mary Elizabeth Massey Papers - Accession 20

The Mary Elizabeth Massey Papers consist of Dr. Massey’s professional and organizational files and includes biographical data, correspondence, lecture and teaching materials, rough notes and unpublished drafts of Dr. Massey’s journal articles and books, speeches, research notes and photo and typescript copies of historical manuscripts from other repositories. Most of the material pertains to Dr. Massey’s publishing efforts, her work as a Winthrop faculty member and scholar and her involvement with professional organizations, especially the Southern Historical Association and the Civil War Centennial Commission. While there is material extending from Dr. Massey’s student days at Hendrix College (a 1937 graduate), most of the substantive material extends from 1953-1973.
