A numerical model of heat transfer in fluidized-bed coating of solid cylinders is presented. By defining suitable dimensionless parameters, the governing equations and its associated initial and boundary conditions are discretized using the method of orthogonal collocation and the resulting ordinary differential equations simultaneously solved for the dimensionless coating thickness and wall temperatures. Parametric Studies showed that the dimensionless coating thickness and wall temperature depend on the relative heat capacities of the polymer powder and object, the latent heat of fusion and the size of the cylinder. Model predictions for the coating thickness and wall temperature compare reasonably well with numerical predictions and experimental coating data in the literature and with our own coating experiments using copper cylinders immersed in nylon-11 and polyethylene powders. The C-type natriuretic peptide from the platypus venom (OvCNP) exists in two forms, OvCNPa and OvCNPb, whose amino acid sequences are identical. Through the use of nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and peptidase digestion studies, we discovered that OvCNPb incorporates a D-amino acid at position 2 in the primary structure. Peptides containing a D-amino acid have been found in lower forms of organism, but this report is the first for a D-amino acid in a biologically active peptide from a mammal. The result implies the existence of a specific isomerase in the platypus that converts an L-amino acid residue in the protein to the D-configuration. The substituted cysteine accessibility method was used to probe the surface exposure of a pore-lining threonine residue (T6') common to both the glycine receptor (GlyR) and gamma-aminobutyric acid, type A receptor (GABAAR) chloride channels. This residue lies close to the channel activation gate, the ionic selectivity filter, and the main pore blocker binding site. Despite their high amino acid sequence homologies and common role in conducting chloride ions, recent studies have suggested that the GlyRs and GABA(A)Rs have divergent open state pore structures at the 6' position. When both the human alpha1(T6'C) homomeric GlyR and the rat alpha1(T6'C)beta1(T6'C) heteromeric GABA(A)R were expressed in human embryonic kidney 293 cells, their 6' residue surface accessibilities differed significantly in the closed state. However, when a soluble cysteine-modifying compound was applied in the presence of saturating agonist concentrations, both receptors were locked into the open state. This action was not induced by oxidizing agents in either receptor. These results provide evidence for a conserved pore opening mechanism in anion-selective members of the ligand-gated ion channel family. The results also indicate that the GABA(A)R pore structure at the 6' level may vary between different expression systems.

In this study the interaction between magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) surface-coated with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) with both bovine serum albumin (BSA) and human serum albumin (HSA) was investigated. The binding of the MNP-DMSA was probed by the fluorescence quenching of the BSA and HSA tryptophan residue. Magnetic resonance and light microscopy analyses were carried out in in vivo tests using female Swiss mice. The binding constants (K(b)) and the complex stoichiometries (n) indicate that MNP-DMSA/BSA and MNP-DMSA/HSA complexes have low association profiles. After five minutes following intravenous injection of MNP-DMSA into mice`s blood stream we found the lung firstly target by the MNP-DMSA, followed by the liver in a latter stage. This finding suggests that the nanoparticle`s DMSA-coating process probably hides the thiol group, through which albumin usually binds. This indicates that biocompatible MNP-DMSA is a very promising material system to be used as a drug delivery system (DDS), primarily for lung cancer treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Phrenic nerve transfer has been used for treating lesions of the brachial plexus since 1970. Although, today, surgeons are more experienced with the technique, there are still widespread concerns about its effects on pulmonary function. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of this procedure. METHODS: Fourteen patients with complete palsy of the upper limb were submitted to phrenic nerve transfer as part of a strategy for surgical reconstruction of their plexuses. Two patients were lost to follow-up, and 2 patients were followed for less than 2 years. Of the remaining 10 patients, 9 (90%) were male. The lesions affected both sides equally. The mean age of the patients was 24.8 years (range, 14-43 years), and the mean interval from injury to surgery was 6 months (range, 3-9 months). The phrenic nerve was always transferred to the musculocutaneous nerve, and a nerve graft (mean length, 8 cm; range, 4.5-12 cm) was necessary in all cases. RESULTS: There was no major complication related to the surgery. Seven patients (70%) recovered functional level biceps strength (Medical Research Council grade >= 3). All of the patients exhibited a transient decrease in pulmonary function tests, but without clinical respiratory problems. CONCLUSION: On the basis of our small series and data from the literature, we conclude that phrenic nerve transfer in well-selected patients is a safe and effective procedure for recovering biceps function.

Background. This study aimed to evaluate manometric parameters that may explain improvement in anal incontinence using a silicone bulking agent. Methods. Incontinent patients having internal sphincter defects were prospectively selected and injected with a silicone bulking agent. Manometry and endoanal ultrasound were performed before and 3 months after injections. Twenty continent healthy volunteers were used only for manometric comparison. Results. Thirty-five patients (28 females; mean age 60.3 years) and 20 controls entered this study. Patients had lower resting and squeeze pressures compared with controls (P<.05). Length of the high-pressure zone increased from 1 to 1.7 cm postinjection (P=.002). Asymmetry index showed a significant change postinjection (P<.001). Conclusion. Despite considerable clinical improvement, no significant increase in manometric pressures was noted posttreatment. There was significant improvement in both high-pressure zone and asymmetry index, and these findings may explain the mechanism of action of the bulking agent injected.

Objective: Our aim was to evaluate the challenges in obtaining a successful restoration of the rotation center as well as a good positioning of the acetabular component when using the minimally-invasive posterior approach for uncemented total hip replacement. Methods: In a comparative non-random prospective study, 64 adult patients underwent elective total hip arthroplasty using the minimally-invasive posterior approach performed by one single surgeon, All patients included in this study had a superior and lateral migration of the rotation center of the hip in comparison to the normal contralateral hip. Patients were excluded from the study if they presented the following: diagnosis of femoral neck fracture, displasic hip types 2, 3 and 4 (Crowe`s classification), osteoarthritis of the contralateral hip. Of the 64 patients in the study, 39 had a radiographic pre-op acetabular size planning equal or less than 50 mm and 25 patients had a radiographic pre-op acetabular size planning equal or more than 52 mm. We considered a good result the following goals: acetabular bend between 35 and 50 degrees, acetabular size according to the pre-op estimative with full contact in the three zones of DeLee-Charnley, a lower medial and vertical positioning of the rotation center in comparison with the pre-op values and a final limb discrepancy lower than 10 mm. Results: A better restoration of the rotation center, as well as, excellent acetabular positioning was found in patients with smaller acetabular size (equal or less than 50), p=0, 04. We must draw attention to two risks when using the minimally-invasive posterior approach: a vertical acetabular position and a lateral position of the acetabular component increasing the risk of a poor contact in the zone 1 due to an insufficient reaming of the medial acetabular host bone. Conclusion: We propose standard surgical approaches in patients with larger anatomical measurements (acetabular planning size more than 50).

Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal and mechanical cycling alone or in combination, on the flexural strength of ceramic and metallic frameworks cast in gold alloy or titanium. Methods. Metallic frameworks (25 mm x 3 mm x 0.5 mm) (N = 96) cast in gold alloy or commercial pure titanium (Ti cp) were obtained using acrylic templates. They were airborne particle-abraded with 150 mu m aluminum oxide at the central area of the frameworks (8 mm x 3 mm). Bonding agent and opaque were applied on the particle-abraded surfaces and the corresponding ceramic for each metal was fired onto them. The thickness of the ceramic layer was standardized by positioning the frameworks in a metallic template (height: I mm). The specimens from each ceramic-metal combination (N = 96, n = 12 per group) were randomly assigned into four experimental fatigue conditions, namely water storage at 37 degrees C for 24 h (control group), thermal cycling (3000 cycles, between 4 and 55 degrees C, dwell time: 10 s), mechanical cycling (20,000 cycles under 10 N load, immersion in distilled water at 37 degrees C) and, thermal and mechanical cycling. A flexural strength test was performed in a universal testing machine (crosshead speed: 1.5 mm/min). Data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05). Results. The mean flexural strength values for the ceramic-gold alloy combination (55 +/- 7.2MPa) were significantly higher than those of the ceramic-Ti cp combination (32 +/- 6.7 MPa) regardless of the fatigue conditions performed (p < 0.05). Mechanical and thermo-mechanical fatigue decreased the flexural strength results significantly for both ceramic-gold alloy (52 +/- 6.6 and 53 +/- 5.6 MPa, respectively) and ceramic-Ti cp combinations (29 +/- 6.8 and 29 +/- 6.8 MPa, respectively) compared to the control group (58 +/- 7.8 and 39 SA MPa, for gold and Ti cp, respectively) (p < 0.05) (Tukey`s test). While ceramic-Ti cp combinations failed adhesively at the metal-opaque interface, gold alloy frameworks exhibited a residue of ceramic material on the surface in all experimental groups. Significance. Mechanical and thermo-mechanical fatigue conditions decreased the flexural strength values for both ceramic-gold alloy and ceramic-Ti cp combinations with the results being significantly lower for the latter in all experimental conditions. Coastal wetlands are dynamic and include the freshwater-intertidal interface. In many parts of the world such wetlands are under pressure from increasing human populations and from predicted sea-level rise. Their complexity and the limited knowledge of processes operating in these systems combine to make them a management challenge.Adaptive management is advocated for complex ecosystem management (Hackney 2000; Meretsky et al. 2000; Thom 2000;National Research Council 2003).Adaptive management identifies management aims,makes an inventory/environmental assessment,plans management actions, implements these, assesses outcomes, and provides feedback to iterate the process (Holling 1978;Walters and Holling 1990). This allows for a dynamic management system that is responsive to change. In the area of wetland management recent adaptive approaches are exemplified by Natuhara et al. (2004) for wild bird management, Bunch and Dudycha (2004) for a river system, Thom (2000) for restoration, and Quinn and Hanna (2003) for seasonal wetlands in California. There are many wetland habitats for which we currently have only rudimentary knowledge (Hackney 2000), emphasizing the need for good information as a prerequisite for effective management. The management framework must also provide a way to incorporate the best available science into management decisions and to use management outcomes as opportunities to improve scientific understanding and provide feedback to the decision system. Figure 9.1 shows a model developed by Anorov (2004) based on the process-response model of Maltby et al. (1994) that forms a framework for the science that underlies an adaptive management system in the wetland context.

This study evaluated the arterial response to cobalt-chromium stents with and without polymer coating (Camouflage (R), Hemoteq AG, Wuerselen, Germany) implanted in pigs. Cobalt-chromium balloon-expandable stents (4 x 16 mm) were implanted in the common carotid arteries of nine pigs. Histological analysis of endothelialization, inflammation and injury was performed one month later. All stents were successfully deployed, and all but one animal survived the 30 study days. All arteries were patent. Endothelialization was nearly complete in most sections of all carotid stents in both groups. There were mild inflammatory infiltrate and mild-to-moderate injury, which were associated with the stent shafts and not significantly different between groups. Our findings suggest that, in porcine carotid arteries, the histological response to balloon-expandable cobalt-chromium stents coated with polymer (Camouflage (R), Hemoteq AG) is similar to the response to non-coated cobalt-chromium stents.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate some parameters of dental etching when irradiated with an erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser. One-hundred sound human third molars were selected and randomly distributed into ten groups (n = 10). The class V cavities of group 1 (control) were prepared with a bur and etched with 37% phosphoric acid, while groups G2 to G10, were prepared with laser (5 W, 88.46 J/cm(2), 90/70% air/water) and etched with the following powers: G3 and G4, 0.25 W; G5 and G6, 0.5 W; G7 and G8, 0.75 W; G9 and G10, 1 W. Group G2 received no laser etching. Prior to restoration, G2, G4, G6, G8 and G10 received acid etching. After restoration, all samples were submitted to a microleakage test. According to statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn`s tests), G10 presented the lowest microleakage values (P < 0.05). The other groups showed no differences between them. Etching with Er,Cr:YSGG laser (1 W) followed by phosphoric acid was effective in reducing the microleakage of class V restorations.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the ion exchange treatment on the R-curve behavior of a leucite-reinforced dental porcelain, testing the hypothesis that the ion exchange is able to improve the R-curve behavior of the porcelain studied. Porcelain disks were sintered, finely polished, and submitted to an ion exchange treatment with a KNO(3) paste. The R-curve behavior was assessed by fracturing the specimens in a biaxial flexure design after making Vickers indentations in the center of the polished surface with loads of 1.8, 3.1, 4.9, 9.8, 31.4, and 49.0 N. The results showed that the ion exchange process resulted in significant improvements in terms of fracture toughness and flexural strength as compared to the untreated material. Nevertheless, the rising R-curve behavior previously observed in the control group disappeared after the ion exchange treatment, i.e., fracture toughness did not increase with the increase in crack size for the treated group.
