White-light emitting Dy3+ doped layered BiOCl phosphors were synthesized by the solid state route and their structure was confirmed by the Rietveld refinement method. On substitution of Dy3+ ion to Bi3+-site in BiOCl, the photoluminescence spectra exhibit blue (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(15/2)), yellow (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2)) and red (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(11/2)) emissions which function together to generate white light. It was found that the emission intensity increases up to 9 mol% of Dy3+ and then quenched due to dipole-dipole interaction. Judd-Ofelt theory and radiative properties suggest that the present phosphors have a long lifetime, high quantum efficiency, excellent color purity and better stimulated emission cross-section compared to reported Dy3+ doped compounds. The obtained color chromaticity results are close to the National Television System Committee standard and clearly establish the bright prospects of these phosphors in white luminescence. Well-crystallized anatase and mixed (anatase-rutile) phase TiO2 thin films were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering technique at various DC powers in the range of 80-140 W. Pure anatase phase was observed in the TiO2 films deposited at low power of 80 W. Films deposited at 120 W were composed of both anatase and rutile phases. At higher power of 140 W, the films are rutile dominated and the rutile percentage increased from 0 to 82% with increase of DC power. The same results of phase change were confirmed by Raman studies. The surface morphology of the TiO2 films showed that the density of the films increased with increase of sputter power. The optical band gap of the films varied from 3.35 to 3.14 eV with increase of DC power. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 films increased with increasing DC power up to 120 W and after that it decreases. We found that the TiO2 films deposited at 120 W with 48% of rutile phase, exhibited high photocatalytic activity (43% of degradation) under UV light compared with other TiO2 films. After loading the optimized Ag nanoparticles on the mixed phase TiO2 films, the photocatalytic activity shifted from UV to visible region with enhancement of photocatalytic activity (55% of degradation). Resumo:
Iron(III) catecholates Fe(R-bpa)(R-dopa)Cl] (1, 2) with a triphenylphosphonium (TPP) moiety, where R-bpa is 2-(TPP-N,N-bis((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)ethanamine) chloride (TPPbpa) and R-dopa is 4-{2-(anthracen-9-yl)methylamino]ethyl}benzene-1,2-diol (andopa, 1) or 4-{2-(pyren-1-yl)-methylamino]ethyl}benzene-1,2-diol (pydopa, 2), were synthesized and their photocytotoxicity studied. Complexes 3 and 4 with phenyl-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]methanamine (phbpa) were used as controls. The catecholate complexes showed an absorption band near 720 nm. The 5e(-) paramagnetic complexes showed a Fe-III/Fe-II irreversible response near -0.45 V and a quasi-reversible catechol/semiquinone couple near 0.5 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE) in DMF/0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate. They showed photocytotoxicity in red/visible light in HeLa, HaCaT, MCF-7, and A549 cells. Complexes 1 and 2 displayed mitochondrial localization, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation under red light, and apoptotic cell death. Control complexes 3 and 4 exhibited uniform distribution throughout the cell. The complexes showed DNA photocleavage under red light (785 nm), forming hydroxyl radicals as the ROS.

The design and synthesis is reported of 7-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-4-methylcoumarin (Cz-Cm), comprising a carbazole donor moiety and a 4-methylcoumarin acceptor unit, for use in a blue organic light-emitting diode. A detailed solid state, theoretical and spectroscopic study was performed to understand the structure-property relationships. The material exhibits deep-blue emission and high photoluminescence quantum yield both in solution and in a doped matrix. A deep-blue electroluminescence emission at 430nm, a maximum brightness of 292cdm(-2) and an external quantum efficiency of 0.4% was achieved with a device configured as follows: ITO/NPD (30nm)/TCTA (20nm)/CzSi(10nm)/10wt% Cz-Cm:DPEPO (10nm)/TPBI (30nm)/LiF (1nm)/Al ITO=indium tin oxide, NPD=N,N-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N-diphenyl-(1,1-biphenyl)-4,4-diamine, TCTA=tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine, CzSi=9-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-3,6-bis(triphenylsilyl)-9H-carbazole, DPEPO=bis2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether oxide, TPBI=1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene].

Semiconductor quantum dots have replaced conventional inorganic phosphors in numerous applications. Despite their overall successes as emitters, their impact as laser materials has been severely limited. Eliciting stimulated emission from quantum dots requires excitation by intense short pulses of light typically generated using other lasers. In this Letter, we develop a new class of quantum dots that exhibit gain under conditions of extremely low levels of continuous wave illumination. We observe thresholds as low as 74 mW/cm(2) in lasers made from these materials. Due to their strong optical absorption as well as low lasing threshold, these materials could possibly convert light from diffuse, polychromatic sources into a laser beam.

Designing and fabricating hybrid systems with a visible light active semiconductor as one of its components is an important research area for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts. Herein, we report visible-light driven photocatalytic activity of graphene oxide (GO) and controllably reduced GO (rGO) modified Ag3PO4 composites fabricated by an in situ method. Concentration of graphene derivatives in GO/rGO-Ag3PO4 composites was in the range of 0.13-0.52 wt% which is very minute compared to those reported previously. The optimal concentration of GO in Ag3PO4 with a kinetics (k = 1.23 +/- 0.04 min(-1)) for the degradation of rhodamine B is 0.26 wt%. GO-Ag3PO4 photocatalysts display an improved catalytic activity compared with pristine and rGOs modified Ag3PO4. In line with this, GO/rGO-Ag3PO4 composites show improved photocatalytic activity for the degradation of 2-chlorophenol compared with Degussa P-25. Our experiments with GO reduced to different extents show that, rGO with more polar functional groups exhibits a higher photocatalytic efficiency. The photocatalytic activity in the presence of different scavengers reveals that holes and O-2(-center dot) reactive species play major roles in the degradation phenomenon. In view of our experimental results and reported theoretical studies, a change in conduction band energy level and variation in the contribution of different charge orbitals (C 2p and O 2p) to the conduction band in the composite favours electron flow from graphene derivatives to the semiconductor, enhancing its photocatalytic response.

We report the synthesis of vanadium and nitrogen co-doped TiO2 for photocatalysis mainly emphasizing the state of nitrogen doping into TiO2 in the presence of vanadium ions. Considering the increase in antibiotic resistance developed by microbes due to the excess of pharmaceutical waste in the ecosystem, the photocatalytic activity was measured by degrading an antibiotic, chloramphenicol. A novel experiment was conducted by degrading the antibiotic and bacteria in each other's vicinity to focus on their synergistic photo-degradation by V-N co-doped TiO2. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, DRS, PL, TEM, BET and XPS analysis. Both interstitial and substitutional nitrogen doping were achieved with V-TiO2, showing high efficiency under visible light for antibiotic and bacterial degradation. In addition, the effect of doping concentration of nitrogen and vanadium in TiO2 and catalyst loading was studied thoroughly. Reusability experiments show that the prepared V-N co-doped TiO2 was stable for many cycles.

In this paper, a hybrid device based on a microcantilever interfaced with bacteriorhodopsin (bR) is constructed. The microcantilever, on which the highly oriented bR film is self-assembled, undergoes controllable and reversible bending when the light-driven proton pump protein, bR, on the microcantilever surface is activated by visible light. Several control experiments are carried out to preclude the influence of heat and photothermal effects. It is shown that the nanomechanical motion is induced by the resulting gradient of protons, which are transported from the KCl solution on the cytoplasmic side of the bR film towards the extracellular side of the bR film. Along with a simple physical interpretation, the microfabricated cantilever interfaced with the organized molecular film of bR can simulate the natural machinery in converting solar energy to mechanical energy.

Circadian oscillators provide rhythmic temporal cues for a range of biological processes in plants and animals, enabling anticipation of the day/night cycle and enhancing fitness-associated traits. We have used engineering models to understand the control principles of a plant's response to seasonal variation. We show that the seasonal changes in the timing of circadian outputs require light regulation via feed-forward loops, combining rapid light-signaling pathways with entrained circadian oscillators. Linear time-invariant models of circadian rhythms were computed for 3,503 circadian-regulated genes and for the concentration of cytosolic-free calcium to quantify the magnitude and timing of regulation by circadian oscillators and light-signaling pathways. Bioinformatic and experimental analysis show that rapid light-induced regulation of circadian outputs is associated with seasonal rephasing of the output rhythm. We identify that external coincidence is required for rephasing of multiple output rhythms, and is therefore important in general phase control in addition to specific photoperiod-dependent processes such as flowering and hypocotyl elongation. Our findings uncover a fundamental design principle of circadian regulation, and identify the importance of rapid light-signaling pathways in temporal control.
