Eunice Ford Stackhouse Biography - Accession 15 - M1 (1)

This collection consists of a biography of Eunice Ford Stackhouse (1885-1980) titled Eunice Ford Stackhouse: Educator and Civic Leader by Mary Frayser in 1959. Mrs. Stackhouse was an educator and civil leader. Mary Frayser includes excerpts and original correspondence of Mrs. Stackhouse in the publication.

Philip B. Mishoe Diaries - Accession 267 - M112 (144)

The Philip B. Mishoe Diaries collection consists of photocopies of two diaries kept by Mr. Mishoe when he served as a seaman during World War II, first aboard the USS New York during North Atlantic Convoy duty and secondly, during Operation Torch, North Africa campaign.

Dixie Music Score - Accession 1398 - M690 (746)

This collection consists of an autographed copy of Herman F. Arnold’s “Dixie”. The music scale is inscribed with “At the request of Miss Minnie Parker the copy of Dixie is presented to Winthrop College [in 1923] by Prof. Herman F. Arnold + the score in 159 of + who wrote Dixie and was made the war tune of the south at the inauguration of Jefferson Davis Feb. 18th 1861 at Montgomery, Ala.” There is also a note stating that this score is “One of the Four Autograph Copies of the Score of Dixie.” Minnie Barker was curator of the Winthrop museum and the music score was displayed there until Tillman Science Building was razed in 1962 which housed the museum.

Harriet P. Lynch Letters - Accession 16 - M2 (2)

The Harriet P. Lynch Letters consist of correspondence from Harriet P. Lynch to Mrs. Julian B. Salley discussing the equal pay for equal work controversy at Winthrop College (1915-1920) where certain women teachers resigned or were fired. Mrs. Salley and Mrs. Lynch served as president and vice-president respectively of the Equal Suffrage League.

The “Dixie” Music Score Collection consists of two photographs of one of the four original autographed copies of the musical score Dixie which was presented to Winthrop College in 1923 by Professor Herman F. Arnold and a photograph of Professor Herman F. Arnold. The Dixie Score is inscribed "At the request of Miss Minnie Barker the copy of Dixie is presented to Winthrop College by Prof. Herman F. Episcopal Church Home For Children Records - Accession 31

The Episcopal Church Home For Children Records are a valuable source on the Church’s historical effort to extend its services for the social improvement of South Carolina (in this case the Episcopal Diocese’s program for destitute children.) The Episcopal Church Home was established in 1850 in Charleston, S.C. for orphan girls and was chartered by the S.C. General Assembly in 1852. The collection consists of a history, minutes, reports of the annual meetings, general correspondence, superintendent’s records, health records, attendance registers, financial records, newsletters (both bound and unbound), and photographs.

David Bancroft Johnson Travel Journals - Accession 32 - M9 (32)

The David Bancroft Johnson Travel Journals Collection consists of a diary of a trip taken by David Bancroft Johnson, Founder and First President of Winthrop, to Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France, England, and Scotland during October- December 1908. The journals contains descriptions of areas visited, social life and customs. Also included is a description of his trip to Denver, Colorado in July 1909 in which he describes the area and its people.

George C. Martin Papers - Accession 271 - M117 (149-150)

The George C. Martin Papers includes Civil War correspondence between George Canning Martin and his wife, Sarah Jane, from May 1862 to August 1864. Subjects include camp life, the progress of the war in North Carolina and Virginia, and the physical and mental condition of the Confederate soldiers (such as ill health, poor food, and depression). Also included are tax receipts, pension records, newspapers clippings (1863), a commonplace book belonging to Robert Smith, and a memoir (author unknown).

Rock Hill Community Council Records- Accession 275 - M118 (151)

The Rock Hill Community Council Records consist of statements of purpose, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and lists of clubs and organizations, mainly relating to the creation of and organization of the Council. The main purpose of the Council was to serve as a clearing house for the many organizations and agencies in the city that are concerned with health, welfare, recreation, and other needs of Rock Hill, SC.

Surasky Family Papers - Accession 250 - M115 (147)

The Surasky Family Papers consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, reminiscences, poetry, and other papers mostly photocopies. Of particular interest are a reminiscence by Esther Pinck entitled “Remembrance of Things Past”, concerned with the Jewish experience in Aiken, SC; papers related to Mina Tropp, a painter who developed a unique medium of painting with flora and who is also published poet; and letters of Judge Justine Wise Polier, well known Juvenile Court judge in New York. Collection is almost all photocopies.

Melle H. Beard Photograph Album - Accession 276 - M119 (152)

The Melle H. Beard Photograph Album collection consists of a photograph album of with images of Winthrop buildings, campus scenes, and pictures of Mrs. Beard and her friends while students at Winthrop College from 1917-1919. Melle Hanahan Beard from Charlotte, NC was a 1919 graduate of Winthrop Normal and Industrial College with an AB degree in Education.

Mary Elizabeth Massey Papers - Accession 20

The Mary Elizabeth Massey Papers consist of Dr. Massey’s professional and organizational files and includes biographical data, correspondence, lecture and teaching materials, rough notes and unpublished drafts of Dr. Massey’s journal articles and books, speeches, research notes and photo and typescript copies of historical manuscripts from other repositories. Most of the material pertains to Dr. Massey’s publishing efforts, her work as a Winthrop faculty member and scholar and her involvement with professional organizations, especially the Southern Historical Association and the Civil War Centennial Commission. While there is material extending from Dr. Massey’s student days at Hendrix College (a 1937 graduate), most of the substantive material extends from 1953-1973.

Leila Russell Papers - Accession 25 - M7 (17)

The Leila Russell Papers consist of a journal kept by Russell which formed the basis for a report to the Southern Education Board, describing conditions at various school houses in Anderson County, South Carolina. There are also photographs of school houses in Anderson and Marion Counties.

John S. Walton Reminiscence - Accession 281 - M120 (153)

The John S. Walton Reminiscence describes his experiences as a Union soldier in the Civil War, describing campaigns in Kentucky and Tennessee. Also included is some genealogy material relating to the Walton family. John S. Walton (1841-1924) was born in London, England and sailed to America landed in Louisville, KY on July 20, 1860. On September 23, 1861 he enlisted in the 15th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and served in the Union army for three years and four months. He was mustered out of serve on January 14, 1865.

Bessie Harper Radio Talk Records - Accession 26 - M8 (18)

The Bessie Harper Radio Talk records consist of a draft of a radio talk on "Family Finance" that was broadcast over WIS, Columbia, South Carolina on Monday, January 25th, 1932. Bessie Harper served as chairman of the American Home Department of the South Carolina Federation of Women's Club (SCFWC). The aim of the talk is to educate families how to budget their finances and to plan their expenses which was particularly important when this talk was given in 1932 during the Great Depression. This talk offers a glimpse into families' attempts to cope with the new economic reality of life during the Great Depression.
