Maria Josepa Arnall i Juan, in memoriam

This article reviews the life and career of Dr. Maria Josepa Arnall i Juan (1948-2002), head professor of Historiographic Science and Techniques at the University of Barcelona. Dr. Arnall was distinguished both on a personal and professional level. She performed a magnificent task as a researcher and teacher, and possessed a great work ethic, as evidenced by her rich and rigorous scientific output, described in the article. She played an active role in collaboration with the Archivists Association of Catalonia helping to train Catalan archivists. The memory of her as a person and a professional, as well as her important and valuable work, remain as her legacy

Creative Industries: a Preliminary Insight to their Location Determinants

This paper is about location decisions of Creative Industries and the role played by existent spatial distribution and agglomeration economies of these kinds of activities in order to analyse their location determinants. Our main statistical source is the REIC (Catalan Manufacturing Establishments Register), which has plant-level microdata on location of new plants. Using Count Data Models, our main results show that location determinants are quite similar between both industries and also both non-creative and creative firms are positively influenced by the specialisation level in Creative Industries of municipalities. Moreover, our results provide evidence that the unobserved ‘creative milieu’ has a limited impact on attracting firms. La Conservació dels murals de la capella de Sant Miquel del Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes

Quan l'abadessa del monestir de Pedralbes estableix en el contracte de Ferrer Bassa que els murals de la capella de Sant Miquel es facin a l'oli segurament fa referència a una tècnica pictòrica consistent a aglutinar els pigments amb oli i a la seva aplicació damunt d'una capa prèvia feta a base de blanc de plom. Però la tècnica que ens trobem no és aquesta: si bé s'utilitza l'oli, s'empren altres aglutinants proteics i resines terpèniques, essent la fase prèvia una pintura al fresc. Els murals estan pintats al fresc i al sec gairabé en la mateixa proporció,i la distribució dels dos procediments està perfectament planificada abans de començar a pintar. També està previst fer la profusa decoració amb daurats i platejats. Els principals problemes de conservació són es inherents a la utilització d'aglutinants orgànics. La tècnica executiva és l'element que més ha condicionat la conservació dels murals, mentre que l'ambient estable de la capella i la seva ubicació han permès que aquest cicle pictòric hagi superat prop de set-cents anys d'història en un estat molt intacte i complet.

Readout electronics for low dark count pixel detectors based on geiger mode avalanche photodiodes fabricated in conventional CMOS technologies for future linear colliders

The high sensitivity and excellent timing accuracy of Geiger mode avalanche photodiodes makes them ideal sensors as pixel detectors for particle tracking in high energy physics experiments to be performed in future linear colliders. Nevertheless, it is well known that these sensors suffer from dark counts and afterpulsing noise, which induce false hits (indistinguishable from event detection) as well as an increase of the necessary area of the readout system. In this work, we present a comparison between APDs fabricated in a high voltage 0.35 µm and a high integration 0.13 µm commercially available CMOS technologies that has been performed to determine which of them best fits the particle collider requirements. In addition, a readout circuit that allows low noise operation is introduced. Experimental characterization of the proposed pixel is also presented in this work.

Low dark count geiger mode avalanche photodiodes fabricated in conventional CMOS technologies

Avalanche photodiodes operated in the Geiger mode present very high intrinsic gain and fast time response, which make the sensor an ideal option for those applications in which detectors with high sensitivity and velocity are required. Moreover, they are compatible with conventional CMOS technologies, allowing sensor and front-end electronics integration within the pixel cell. Despite these excellent qualities, the photodiode suffers from high intrinsic noise, which degrades the performance of the detector and increases the memory area to store the total amount of information generated. In this work, a new front-end circuit that allows low reverse bias overvoltage sensor operation to reduce the noise in Geiger mode avalanche photodiode pixel detectors is presented. The proposed front-end circuit also enables to operate the sensor in the gated acquisition mode to further reduce the noise. Experimental characterization of the fabricated pixel with the conventional HV-AMS 0.35µm technology is also presented in this article.

Toxicidade e atividade antioxidante de flavonoides das cascas das raízes de Lonchocarpus filipes

The phytochemical investigation of dichloromethane extract from root bark of Lonchocarpus filipes Benth (Leguminosae) afforded four flavonoids including three dibenzoylmethane derivatives rarely found in nature. The structures were established based on their spectral data (¹H and 13C NMR, 2D-NMR) as being: lanceolatin B (1), pongamol (2), (E)-7-O-methylpongamol (3) and (E)-9-O-methylpongamol (4). Compound (4) is described herein for the first time as a natural product. The extracts and the isolated compounds (1), (2) and (3) displayed high toxicity in the brine shrimp lethality assay. Only compound (2) showed antioxidant activity using a DPPH radical scavenging assay. This is the first report on the phytochemical study of Lonchocarpus filipes.

Síntese de regioisômeros quirais a partir de D-manitol: obtenção de uma mistura de álcoois acetilênicos

The synthesis of chiral acetylenic regioisomers was described by using an appropriate intermediate such as isopropylidene glycerol, a synthon widely used in the enantioselective syntheses. This intermediate was prepared from D-mannitol. The nine obtained compounds have been characterized by their respective spectral data. The mixture of chiral acetylenic alcohols showed activity against Escherichia coli when tested through the monitoring of CO2 released during microbial respiration by using a conductimetric system.

Efeito da adição de TIO2 nas propriedades térmicas e na cristalinidade do copolímero de etileno/acetato de vinila

We investigated the effect of adding titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2) to ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer, containing 28% vinyl acetate groups, on the crystallinity and miscibility of the copolymer. Films of EVA/TiO2 containing 0.25%-1% TiO2, relative to the total weight of EVA, were prepared from their solution. The obtained films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, low-field nuclear magnetic resonance, and differential scanning calorimetry. The addition of TiO2 to the EVA copolymer was proved to cause changes in the crystallinity and mobility of the polymer chains of EVA, due to new intermolecular interactions and nanostructure organization.
