In this paper, we investigate cooperative OFDM communications using amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol at the relays, in the presence of imperfect timing synchronization. In most studies on cooperative communications, perfect time synchronization among cooperating nodes is assumed. In practice, however, due to imperfect time synchronization, orthogonality among the subcarriers of the different nodes' signals at the destination receiver can be lost, causing inter-symbol interference (ISI). In this paper, we derive analytical expressions for the average SINR at the DFT output at the destination as a function of timing offset in cooperative OFDM with AF protocol, and illustrate the SINR degradation as a function of the timing offset. We also present an interference canceling (IC) receiver to mitigate the effects of ISI when there is timing offset. We show that the proposed IC receiver achieves improved BER performance even when timing offsets are large.

In a mobile ad-hoc network scenario, where communication nodes are mounted on moving platforms (like jeeps, trucks, tanks, etc.), use of V-BLAST requires that the number of receive antennas in a given node must be greater than or equal to the sum of the number of transmit antennas of all its neighbor nodes. This limits the achievable spatial multiplexing gain (data rate) for a given node. In such a scenario, we propose to achieve high data rates per node through multicode direct sequence spread spectrum techniques in conjunction with V-BLAST. In the considered multicode V-BLAST system, the receiver experiences code domain interference (CDI) in frequency selective fading, in addition to space domain interference (SDI) experienced in conventional V-BLAST systems. We propose two interference cancelling receivers that employ a linear parallel interference cancellation approach to handle the CDI, followed by conventional V-BLAST detector to handle the SDI, and then evaluate their bit error rates.

Anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) has been applied to study the structure of amorphous platinum disulfide, Pt1-xS2, prepared by the precipitation process. The local atomic arrangement in amorphous Pt1-xS2 was determined by the least-squares variational method so as to reproduce the experimental differential interference function at the Pt L(III) absorption edge by the AXS method as well as the ordinary interference function by MoK alpha. The structural unit in amorphous Pt1-xS2 is found to be a PtS6 octahedron, similar to that in crystalline PtS2. These octahedra share both their corners and edges, while only edge-sharing linkages occur in crystalline PtS2.

Rigorous elastic-plastic finite element analysis of joints subjected to cyclic loading is carried out. An incremental-iterative algorithm is developed in a modular form combining elasto-plastic material behaviour and contact stress analysis. For the case of the interference fit, the analysis sequentially carries out insertion of the pin and application of the load on the joint, covering possible initiation of separation (and/or yielding) and progressively the receding/advancing contact at the pin-plate interface. Deformations of both the plate and the pin are considered in the analysis. Numerical examples are presented for the case of an interference fit pin in a large plate under remote cyclic tension, and for an interference fit pin lug joint subjected to cyclic loading. A detailed study is carried out for the latter problem considering the effect of change in contact/separation at the pin-plate interface on local stresses, strains and redistribution of these stresses with the spread of a plastic zone. The results of the study are a useful input for the estimation of the fatigue life of joints. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

The present paper aims at studying the performance characteristics of a subspace based algorithm for source localization in shallow water such as coastal water. Specifically, we study the performance of Multi Image Subspace Algorithm (MISA). Through first-order perturbation analysis and computer simulation it is shown that MISA is unbiased and statistically efficient. Further, we bring out the role of multipaths (or images) in reducing the error in the localization. It is shown that the presence of multipaths is found to improve the range and depth estimates. This may be attributed to the increased curvature of the wavefront caused by interference from many coherent multipaths.

We analyze the origin of de-enhancement for a number of vibrational modes in the 2(1)A(g) excited state of trans-azobenzene. We have used the time-dependent wave packet analysis of the RR intensities by including the multimode damping effects in the calculation. This avoids the use of unrealistically large values for the damping parameter. It is concluded that the de-enhancement is caused by the interference between the two uncoupled electronic states, and that the intensities observed under the so-called symmetry forbidden 2(1)A(g) <-- 1(1)A(g) transition are purely due to resonance excitation. It is also observed that the use of the time-dependent approach to study the de-enhancement effects caused by multiple electronic states on the RR intensities is not necessarily useful if one is interested in the structural dynamics.

Resonant microwave power absorption is examined for slabs exposed to TEM waves from both faces and for a slab placed on a reflecting support. Using the electric field distribution in the slab, the average power is obtained by integrating the spatially distributed power across the sample length. Due to constructive interference of the standing waves within the sample, the average power rises to a local maximum during a resonance. Irrespective of the material, resonances occur at integral values of L/lambda(s) when the slab is exposed to radiation from both faces and at L/lambda(s) = 0.5n-0.25 when placed on a reflecting support.

In this paper, we present a belief propagation (BP) based equalizer for ultrawideband (UWB) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) inter-symbol interference (ISI) channels characterized by severe delay spreads. We employ a Markov random field (MRF) graphical model of the system on which we carry out message passing. The proposed BP equalizer is shown to perform increasingly closer to optimal performance for increasing number of multipath components (MPC) at a much lesser complexity than that of the optimum equalizer. The proposed equalizer performs close to within 0.25 dB of SISO AWGN performance at 10-3 bit error rate on a severely delay-spread MIMO-ISI channel with 20 equal-energy MPCs. We point out that, although MIMO/UWB systems are characterized by fully/densely connected graphical models, the following two proposed features are instrumental in achieving near-optimal performance for large number of MPCs at low complexities: i) use of pairwise compatibility functions in densely connected MRFs, and ii) use of damping of messages.

In uplink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), carrier frequency offsets (CFO) and/or timing offsets (TO) of other users with respect to a desired user can cause significant multiuser interference (MUI). In this paper, we derive an analytical bit error rate (BER) expression that quantify the degradation in BER due to the combined effect of both CFOs and TOs in uplink OFDMA on Rician fading channels. Such an analytical BER derivation for uplink OFDMA with CFOs and TOs on Rician fading channels has not been reported so far. For the case of non-zero CFOs/TOs, we obtain an approximate BER expression involving a single integral. Analytical and simulation BER results are shown to match very well.

In this paper, we consider the application of belief propagation (BP) to achieve near-optimal signal detection in large multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems at low complexities. Large-MIMO architectures based on spatial multiplexing (V-BLAST) as well as non-orthogonal space-time block codes(STBC) from cyclic division algebra (CDA) are considered. We adopt graphical models based on Markov random fields (MRF) and factor graphs (FG). In the MRF based approach, we use pairwise compatibility functions although the graphical models of MIMO systems are fully/densely connected. In the FG approach, we employ a Gaussian approximation (GA) of the multi-antenna interference, which significantly reduces the complexity while achieving very good performance for large dimensions. We show that i) both MRF and FG based BP approaches exhibit large-system behavior, where increasingly closer to optimal performance is achieved with increasing number of dimensions, and ii) damping of messages/beliefs significantly improves the bit error performance.

Scattering of coherent light from scattering particles causes phase shift to the scattered light. The interference of unscattered and scattered light causes the formation of speckles. When the scattering particles, under the influence of an ultrasound (US) pressure wave, vibrate, the phase shift fluctuates, thereby causing fluctuation in speckle intensity. We use the laser speckle contrast analysis (LSCA) to reconstruct a map of the elastic property (Young's modulus) of soft tissue-mimicking phantom. The displacement of the scatters is inversely related to the Young's modulus of the medium. The elastic properties of soft biological tissues vary, many fold with malignancy. The experimental results show that laser speckle contrast (LSC) is very sensitive to the pathological changes in a soft tissue medium. The experiments are carried out on a phantom with two cylindrical inclusions of sizes 6 mm in diameter, separated by 8 mm between them. Three samples are made. One inclusion has Young's modulus E of 40 kPa. The second inclusion has either a Young's modulus E of 20 kPa, or scattering coefficient of mu'(s), = 3.00 mm(-1) or absorption coefficient of mu(a) = 0.03 mm(-1). The optical absorption (mu(a)), reduced scattering (mu'(s)) coefficient, and the Young's modulus of the background are mu(a) = 0.01 mm(-1), mu'(s) = 1.00 mm(-1) and 12kPa, respectively. The experiments are carried out on all three phantoms. On a phantom with two inclusions of Young's modulus of 20 and 40 kPa, the measured relative speckle image contrasts are 36.55% and 63.72%, respectively. Experiments are repeated on phantoms with inclusions of mu(a) = 0.03 mm-1, E = 40 kPa and mu'(s) = 3.00 mm(-1). The results show that it is possible to detect inclusions with contrasts in optical absorption, optical scattering, and Young's modulus. Studies of the variation of laser speckle contrast with ultrasound driving force for various values of mu(a), mu'(s), and Young's modulus of the tissue mimicking medium are also carried out. Modern PWM inverter output voltage has high dv/dt, which causes problems such as voltage doubling that can lead to insulation failure, ground currents that results in electromagnetic interference concerns. The IGBT switching device used in such inverter are becoming faster, exacerbating these problems. This paper proposes a new procedure for designing the LC clamp filter. The filter increases the rise time of the output voltage of inverter, resulting in smaller dv/dt. In addition suitable selection of resonance frequency gives LCL filter configuration with improved attenuation. By adding this filter at output terminal of inverter which uses long cable, voltage doubling effect is reduced at the motor terminal. The design procedure is carried out in terms of the power converter based per unit scheme. This generalizes the design procedure to a wide range of power level and to study optimum designs. The effectiveness of the design is verified by computer simulation and experimental measurements.

We present experimental investigation of a new reconstruction method for off-axis digital holographic microscopy (DHM). This method effectively suppresses the object auto-correlation, commonly called the zero-order term, from holographic measurements, thereby suppressing the artifacts generated by the intensities of the two beams employed for interference from complex wavefield reconstruction. The algorithm is based on non-linear filtering, and can be applied to standard DHM setups, with realistic recording conditions. We study the applicability of the technique under different experimental configurations, such as topographic images of microscopic specimens or speckle holograms.

Resonance Raman (RR) spectra are presented for p-nitroazobenzene dissolved in chloroform using 18 excitation Wavelengths, covering the region of (1)(n --> pi*) electronic transition. Raman intensities are observed for various totally symmetric fundamentals, namely, C-C, C-N, N=N, and N-O stretching vibrations, indicating that upon photoexcitation the excited-state evolution occurs along all of these vibrational coordinates. For a few fundamentals, interestingly, in p-nitroazobenzene, it is observed that the RR intensities decrease near the maxima of the resonant electronic (1)(n --> pi*) transition. This is attributed to the interference from preresonant scattering due to the strongly allowed (1)(pi --> pi*) electronic transition. The electronic absorption spectrum and the absolute Raman cross section for the nine Franck-Condon active fundamentals of p-nitroazobenzene have been successfully modeled using Heller's time-dependent formalism for Raman scattering. This employs harmonic description of the lowest energy (1)(n --> pi*) potential energy surface. The short-time isomerization dynamics is then examined from a priori knowledge of the ground-state normal mode descriptions of p-nitroazobenzene to convert the wave packet motion in dimensionless normal coordinates to internal coordinates. It is observed that within 20 fs after photoexcitation in p-nitroazobenzene, the N=N and C-N stretching vibrations undergo significant changes and the unsubstituted phenyl ring and the nitro stretching vibrations are also distorted considerably.

Competition for available resources is natural amongst coexisting species, and the fittest contenders dominate over the rest in evolution. The. dynamics of this selection is studied using a simple linear model. It has similarities to features of quantum computation, in particular conservation laws leading to destructive interference. Compared to an altruistic scenario, competition introduces instability and eliminates the weaker species in a finite time.
