A range of ionic liquids was prepared by mixing 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride with gallium(III) chloride or indium(III) chloride in various ratios, producing both acidic and basic compositions. Their speciation was investigated using Ga-71 NMR or In-115 NMR spectroscopy, as well as extended X-ray absorption fine structure. Polynuclear Lewis acidic anions, [MxCl3x+1](-), were found in chlorogallate(III) ionic liquids, but not in chloroindate(III) systems.

La3FMo4O16 crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with space group P (1) over bar [a = 724.86(2) pm, b = 742.26(2) pm, c = 1469.59(3) pm, a = 101.683(2)degrees, beta 102.118(2)degrees, gamma = 100.279(2)degrees] with two formula units per unit cell. The three crystallographically independent La3+ cations show a coordination number of nine each, with one F- and eight O2- anions forming distorted monocapped square antiprisms. The fluoride anion is coordinated by all three lanthanum cations to form a nearly planar triangle. Besides three crystallographically independent tetrahedral [MoO4](2-) units, a fourth one with a higher coordination number (CN = 4 +1) can be found in the crystal structure, forming a dimeric entity with a formula of [Mo2O8](4-) consisting of two edge-connected square pyramids. Several spectroscopic measurements were performed on the title compound, such as infrared, Raman, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Furthermore, La3FMo4O16 was investigated for its capacity to work as host material for doping with luminescent active cations, such as Ce3+ or Pr3+. Therefore, luminescence spectroscopic as well as EPR measurements were performed with doped samples of the title compound. Both the pure and the doped compounds can be synthesized by fusing La2O3, LaF3 and MoO3 (ratio 4:1:12; ca. 1 % CeF3 and PrF3 as dopant, respectively) in evacuated silica ampoules at 850 degrees C for 7 d.

Electron impact excitation rates in Cl III, recently determined with the R-matrix code, are used to calculate electron temperature (T-e) and density (N-e) emission line ratios involving both the nebular (5517.7, 5537.9 Angstrom) and auroral (8433.9, 8480.9, 8500.0 Angstrom) transitions. A comparison of these results with observational data for a sample of planetary nebulae, obtained with the Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph on the 3-m Shane Telescope, reveals that the R-1 = /(5518 Angstrom)/I(5538 Angstrom) intensity ratio provides estimates of N-e in excellent agreement with the values derived from other line ratios in the echelle spectra. This agreement indicates that R-1 is a reliable density diagnostic for planetary nebulae, and it also provides observational support for the accuracy of the atomic data adopted in the line ratio calculations. However the [Cl III] 8433.9 Angstrom line is found to be frequently blended with a weak telluric emission feature, although in those instances when the [Cl III] intensity may be reliably measured, it provides accurate determinations of T-e when ratioed against the sum of the 5518 and 5538 Angstrom line fluxes. Similarly, the 8500.0 Angstrom line, previously believed to be free of contamination by the Earth's atmosphere, is also shown to be generally blended with a weak telluric emission feature. The [CI III] transition at 8480.9 Angstrom is found to be blended with the He I 8480.7 Angstrom line, except in planetary nebulae that show a relatively weak He I spectrum, where it also provides reliable estimates of T-e when ratioed against the nebular lines. Finally, the diagnostic potential of the near-UV [Cl III] lines at 3344 and 3354 Angstrom is briefly discussed.

A range of chloroindate(III) ionic liquid systems was prepared by mixing of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride with indium(III) chloride in various ratios, expressed as the mol fraction of indium(III) chloride, chi(InCl3). For chi(InCl3) 0.50, the products were biphasic (suspensions of a solid in an ionic liquid). Speciation of these chloroindate(III) systems was carried out using a wide range of techniques: differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarised optical microscopy (POM), liquid-state and solid-state In-115 NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Ionic liquids prepared using an excess of the organic chloride (chi(InCl3) 0.5) contained indium(III) chloride powder suspended in a neutral tetrachloroindate ionic liquid.

Micro-(mi)RNAs play a pivotal role in the developmental regulation of plants and animals. We reasoned that disruption of normal heterochronic activity in differentiating Meloidogyne incognita eggs may lead to irregular development, lethality and by extension, represent a novel target for parasite control On silencing the nuclear RNase III enzyme drosha, a critical effector of miRNA maturation in animals, we found a significant inhibition of normal development and hatching in short interfering (sORNA-soaked M incognita eggs Developing juveniles presented with highly irregular tissue patterning within the egg, and we found that unlike our previous gene silencing efforts focused on FMRFamide (Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-NH2)-like peptides (FLPs), there was no observable phenotypic recovery following removal of the environmental siRNA. Aberrant phenotypes were exacerbated over time, and drosha knockdown proved embryonically lethal Subsequently, we identified and silenced the drosha cofactor pasha, revealing a comparable inhibition of normal embryonic development within the eggs to that of drosha-silenced eggs, eventually leading to embryonic lethality To further probe the link between normal embryonic development and the M. incognita RNA interference (RNAi) pathway, we attempted to examine the impact of silencing the cytosolic RNase III enzyme dicer. Unexpectedly, we found a substantial up-regulation of dicer transcript abundance, which did not impact on egg differentiation or hatching rates. Silencing of the individual transcripts in hatched J2s was significantly less successful and resulted in temporary phenotypic aberration of the J2s. which recovered within 24 h to normal movement and posture on washing out the siRNA. Soaking the J2s in dicer siRNA resulted in a modest decrease in dicer transcript abundance which had no observable impact on phenotype or behaviour within 48 h of initial exposure to siRNA. We propose that drosha, pasha and their ancillary factors may represent excellent targets for novel nematicides and/or in planta controls aimed at M incognita, and potentially other parasitic nematodes, through disruption of miRNA-directed developmental pathways. In addition, we have identified a putative Mi-en-I transcript which encodes an RNAi-inhibiting siRNA exonuclease We observe a marked up-regulation of MI-en-I transcript abundance in response to exogenously introduced siRNA, and reason that this may impact on the interpretation of RN/NI-based reverse genetic screens in plant parasitic nematodes. The synapsin III gene, SYN3, which belongs to the family of synaptic vesicle-associated proteins, has been implicated in the modulation of neurotransmitter release and in synaptogenesis, suggesting a potential role in several neuropsychiatric diseases. The human SYN3 gene is located on chromosome 22q12-13, a candidate region implicated in previous linkage studies of schizophrenia. However, association studies of SYN3 and schizophrenia have produced inconsistent results. In this Study, four SYN3 SNPs (rs133945 (-631 C>G), rs133946(-196 G>A), rs9862 and rs1056484) were tested in three sets of totally 3759 samples that comprise 655 affected subjects and 626 controls in the Irish Case-Control Study of Schizophrenia (ICCSS). 1350 samples incorporating 273 pedigrees in the Irish Study of High Density Schizophrenia Families (ISHDSF), and 564 unrelated schizophrenia patients and 564 healthy individuals in a Chinese case-control sample. The expression levels of SYN3 in schizophrenic patients and unaffected controls were compared using postmortem brain cDNAs provided by the Stanley Medical Research Institute (SMRI). There was no significant association in either the Irish or Chinese case-control samples, nor in the combined samples. Consistent with this finding, we did not find any significant difference in allele or haplotype frequencies when we used the pedigree disequilibrium test to analyze the Irish family sample. In the expression Studies, no significant difference (p = 0.507) was observed between patients and controls. Both the association studies and expression studies didn't support a major role for SYN3 in the susceptibility of schizophrenia in Irish and Chinese populations.
