Context. It is not known how many globular clusters may remain undetected towards the Galactic bulge. Aims. One of the aims of the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) Survey is to accurately measure the physical parameters of the known globular clusters in the inner regions of the Milky Way and search for new ones, hidden in regions of large extinction. Methods. From deep near-infrared images, we derive deep JHK(S)-band photometry of a region surrounding the known globular cluster UKS 1 and reveal a new low-mass globular cluster candidate that we name VVV CL001. Results. We use the horizontal-branch red clump to measure E(B-V) similar to 2.2 mag, (m - M)(0) = 16.01 mag, and D = 15.9 kpc for the globular cluster UKS 1. On the basis of near-infrared colour-magnitude diagrams, we also find that VVV CL001 has E(B-V) similar to 2.0, and that it is at least as metal-poor as UKS 1, although its distance remains uncertain. Conclusions. Our finding confirms the previous projection that the central region of the Milky Way harbours more globular clusters. VVV CL001 and UKS 1 are good candidates for a physical cluster binary, but follow-up observations are needed to decide if they are located at the same distance and have similar radial velocities.

The mandible has a mixed embryological origin, and its growth is associated with the secondary cartilage of the condyle process (CP). In this area, growth depends on an array of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence protein metabolism. In the present study, we used an adolescent rat model to evaluate the growth and development of the CP under conditions of pre- and postnatal protein deficiency, combined with or without the stress of severe burn injury (BI). We found that protein deficiency severely undermined the growth of the CP, by altering the thickness of its constituent layers. BI is also capable of affecting CP growth, although the effect is less severe than protein deficiency. Interestingly, the summed effect of protein deficiency and BI on the CP is less severe than protein deficiency alone. A possible explanation is that the increased carbohydrates in a hypoproteic diet stimulate the production of endogenous insulin and protein synthesis, which partially compensates for the loss of lean body mass caused by BI.

Background: We have previously demonstrated that four members of the family of small leucine-rich-proteoglycans (SLRPs) of the extracellular matrix (ECM), named decorin, biglycan, lumican and fibromodulin, are deeply remodeled in mouse uterine tissues along the estrous cycle and early pregnancy. It is known that the combined action of estrogen (E2) and progesterone (P4) orchestrates the estrous cycle and prepares the endometrium for pregnancy, modulating synthesis, deposition and degradation of various molecules. Indeed, we showed that versican, another proteoglycan of the ECM, is under hormonal control in the uterine tissues. Methods: E2 and/or medroxiprogesterone acetate (MPA) were used to demonstrate, by real time PCR and immunoperoxidase staining, respectively, their effects on mRNA expression and protein deposition of these SLRPs, in the uterine tissues. Results: Decorin and lumican were constitutively expressed and deposited in the ECM in the absence of the ovarian hormones, whereas deposition of biglycan and fibromodulin were abolished from the uterine ECM in the non-treated group. Interestingly, ovariectomy promoted an increase in decorin, lumican and fibromodulin mRNA levels, while biglycan mRNA conspicuously decreased. Hormone replacement with E2 and/or MPA differentially modulates their expression and deposition. Conclusions: The patterns of expression of these SLRPs in the uterine tissues were found to be hormone-dependent and uterine compartment-related. These results reinforce the existence of subpopulations of endometrial fibroblasts, localized into distinct functional uterine compartments, resembling the organization into basal and functional layers of the human endometrium.

The structure of thin films composed of a multilayer of PbTe nanocrystals embedded in SiO(2), named as PbTe(SiO(2)), between homogeneous layers of amorphous SiO(2) deposited on a single-crystal Si( 111) substrate was studied by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) as a function of PbTe content. PbTe(SiO(2))/SiO(2) multilayers were produced by alternately applying plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition and pulsed laser deposition techniques. From the analysis of the experimental GISAXS patterns, the average radius and radius dispersion of PbTe nanocrystals were determined. With increasing deposition dose the size of the PbTe nanocrystals progressively increases while their number density decreases. Analysis of the GISAXS intensity profiles along the normal to the sample surface allowed the determination of the period parameter of the layers and a structure parameter that characterizes the disorder in the distances between PbTe layers. Shallow subsurface layers of gold nanoclusters were formed in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) polymer by very low energy (49 eV) gold ion implantation. The ion implantation process was modeled by computer simulation and accurately predicted the layer depth and width. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to image the buried layer and individual nanoclusters; the layer width was similar to 6-8 nm and the cluster diameter was similar to 5-6 nm. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption effects were observed by UV-visible spectroscopy. The TEM and SPR results were related to prior measurements of electrical conductivity of Au-doped PMMA, and excellent consistency was found with a model of electrical conductivity in which either at low implantation dose the individual nanoclusters are separated and do not physically touch each other, or at higher implantation dose the nanoclusters touch each other to form a random resistor network (percolation model). The structure of a complex between hydrated DNA and a non-cationic lipid is studied, including its phase diagram. The complex is spontaneously formed by adding DNA fragments (ca. 150 base pairs in length) to non-cationic lipids and water. The self-assembly process often leads to highly ordered structures. The structures were studied by combining X-ray scattering, fluorescence and polarized microscopy, as well as freeze-fracture experiments with transmission electron microscopy. We observe a significant increase of the smectic order as DNA is incorporated into the water layers of the lamellar host phase, and stabilization of single phase domains for large amounts of DNA. The effect of confinement on DNA ordering is investigated by varying the water content, following three dilution lines. A rich polymorphism is found, ranging from weakly correlated DNA-DNA in-plane organizations to highly ordered structures, where transmembrane correlations lead to the formation of columnar rectangular and columnar hexagonal superlattices of nucleotides embedded between lipid lamellae. From these observations, we suggest that addition of DNA to the lamellar phase significantly restricts membrane fluctuations above a certain concentration and helps the formation of the lipoplex. The alteration of membrane steric interactions, together with the appearance of interfacial interactions between membranes and DNA molecules may be a relevant mechanism for the emergence of highly ordered structures in the concentrated regime.

Using first-principles calculations it is demonstrated that Co doped graphenelike ZnO sheet presents ferromagnetic coupling. The Co atoms are energetically barrierless absorbed in the Zn sites, suffering a Jahn-Teller distortion. The results reveal that the origin of the ferromagnetic coupling, different from the bulk 3D ZnO stacking, is mainly guided by a direct exchange interaction without any additional defect. This ferromagnetic coupling is due to the system topology, namely, it is a direct consequence of the two-dimensional character of the ZnO monolayer within graphenelike structure. Increasing the number of ZnO layers the ferromagnetic coupling vanishes.

A systematic study of magnetoresistance and dc magnetization was conducted in polycrystalline (Ru(1-x)Ir(x))Sr(2)GdCu(2)O(8) [(Ru,Ir)-1212] compounds, for 0 <= x <= 0.15. We found that a deviation from linearity in the normal-state electrical resistivity (rho) curves for temperatures below the magnetic transition temperature T(M) < 130 K can be properly described by a logarithmic term. The prefactor C(x, H) of this anomalous ln T contribution to rho(T) increases linearly with the Ir concentration, and diminishes rapidly with increasing applied magnetic field up to H approximate to 4 T, merging with the C(0,H) curve at higher magnetic fields. Correlation with magnetic susceptibility measurements supports a scenario of local perturbations in the orientation of Ru moments induced in the neighborhood of the Ir ions, therefore acting as scattering centers. The linear dependence of the prefactor C(x,H=0) and the superconducting transition temperature T(SC) on x points to a common source for the resistivity anomaly and the reduction in T(SC), suggesting that the CuO(2) and RuO(2) layers are not decoupled.

We have investigated the electronic and transport properties of zigzag Ni-adsorbed graphene nanoribbons (Ni/GNRs) using ab initio calculations. We find that the Ni adatoms lying along the edge of zigzag GNRs represent the energetically most stable configuration, with an energy difference of approximately 0.3 eV when compared to the adsorption in the middle of the ribbon. The carbon atoms at the ribbon edges still present nonzero magnetic moments as in the pristine GNR even though there is a quenching by a factor of almost five in the value of the local magnetic moments at the C atoms bonded to the Ni. This quenching decays relatively fast and at approximately 9 A from the Ni adsorption site the magnetic moments have already values close to the pristine ribbon. At the opposite edge and at the central carbon atoms the changes in the magnetic moments are negligible. The energetic preference for the antiparallel alignment between the magnetization at the opposite edges of the ribbon is still maintained upon Ni adsorption. We find many Ni d-related states within an energy window of 1 eV above and below the Fermi energy, which gives rise to a spin-dependent charge transport. These results suggest the possibility of manufacturing spin devices based on GNRs doped with Ni atoms.

Magnetotransport measurements on bilayer electron systems reveal repeated reentrance of the resistance minima at filling factors nu=4N+1 and nu=4N+3, where N is the Landau index number, in the tilted magnetic field. At high filling factors, the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations exhibit beating effects at certain tilt angles. We attribute such behavior to oscillations of the tunneling gap due to Aharonov-Bohm interference effect between cyclotron orbits in different layers. The interplay between quantum and quasiclassical regimes is established.

In this work we use resonant x-ray diffraction combined with polarization analysis of the diffracted beam to study the magnetic ordering in EuTe/PbTe multilayers. The presence of satellites at the (1/2 1/2 1/2) magnetic reflection of a 50 /repetition EuTe/PbTe superlattice demonstrated the existence of magnetic correlations among the alternated EuTe layers. The behavior of the satellites intensity as T increases toward the Neel temperature T(N) indicates that these correlations persist nearly up to T(N) and suggests the preferential decrease of the magnetic order parameter of external monolayers of each EuTe layer within the superlattice. We experimentally investigate the Bragg reflection of light at one-dimensionally ordered atomic structures by using cold atoms trapped in a laser standing wave. By a fine-tuning of the periodicity, we reach the regime of multiple reflection due to the refractive index contrast between layers, yielding an unprecedented high reflectance efficiency of 80%. This result is explained by the occurrence of a photonic band gap in such systems, in accordance with previous predictions.

Several growth procedures for doping InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) with manganese (Mn) have been investigated with cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy. It is found that expulsion of Mn out of the QDs and subsequent segregation makes it difficult to incorporate Mn in the QDs even at low growth temperatures of T=320 degrees C and high Mn fluxes. Mn atoms in and around QDs have been observed with strain and potential confinement changing the appearance of the Mn features.

The combination of metallic phthalocyanines (MPcs) and biomolecules has been explored in the literature either as mimetic systems to investigate molecular interactions or as supporting layers to immobilize biomolecules. Here, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing the phospholipid dimyristoyl phosphatidic acid (DMPA) mixed either with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) or with lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc(2)) were applied as ITO modified-electrodes in the detection of catechol using cyclic voltammetry. The mixed Langmuir films of FePc + DMPA and LuPc(2) + DMPA displayed surface-pressure isotherms with no evidence of molecular-level interactions. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of the multilayer LB films confirmed the lack of interaction between the components. The DMPA and the FePc molecules were found to be oriented perpendicularly to the substrate, while LuPc(2) molecules were randomly organized. The phospholipid matrix induced a remarkable electrocatalytic effect on the phthalocyanines; as a result the mixed LB films deposited on ITO could be used to detect catechol with detection limits of 4.30 x 10(-7) and 3.34 x 10(-7) M for FePc + DMPA and LuPc(2) + DMPA, respectively. Results from kinetics experiments revealed that ion diffusion dominated the response of the modified electrodes. The sensitivity was comparable to that of other non-enzymatic sensors, which is sufficient to detect catechol in the food industry. The higher stability of the electrochemical response of the LB films and the ability to control the molecular architecture are promising for further studies with incorporation of biomolecules.

Elastic properties of freestanding porous silicon layers fabricated by electrochemical anodization were studied by Raman scattering. Different anodization currents provided different degrees of porosity in the nanometer scale. Raman lines corresponding to the longitudinal optical phonons of crystalline and amorphous phases were observed. The amorphous volume fraction increased and the phonon frequencies for both phases decreased with increasing porosity. A strain distribution model is proposed whose fit to the experimental results indicates that the increasing nanoscale porosity causes strain relaxation in the amorphous domains and strain buildup in the crystalline ones. The present analysis has significant implications on the estimation of the crystalline Si domain's characteristic size from Raman scattering data. (C) 2009 The Electrochemical Society.
