To collate support and extension materials to ensure the recipients of Australian cattle have, at least, a minimum understanding of animal husbandry. As the number of destination markets increases, the need will also increase to produce similar material relevant and locally sensitive for these new markets.

Increasing production from inland aquaculture in Papua New Guinea

There are more than 10,000 small-scale fish farms in PNG producing tilapia, carp or trout for home consumption and sale. Interest in aquaculture is growing rapidly, and the government has given high priority to aquaculture development, in recognition of its potential contribution to achieving food security particularly in the inland areas. Significant constraints include lack of capability within management agencies to identify appropriate sites for pond development, inadequate supply and poor quality of fingerlings, limited availability and high cost of pond fertilisers and suitable feeds, and a general lack of knowledge and training on aquaculture husbandry skills.

Improving production of cows and fattening cattle in Indonesia and north Australia

To increase numbers and reproduction in Ongole and Bali cows by as much as 60% in Indonesia requires use of rice straw for maintenance of cows and higher quality feed and crop by-products for growth and fattening of calves. These feedstuffs exist in large quantities. The project will couple feeding systems with management (controlled mating with a selected bull, weaning, compost production), previously developed by the project team, in village-based adaptive research across the main cattle regions of Indonesia, with emphasis on East Java. The project will link with research on nutrition interactions with reproduction of cows in indigenous pastoral systems in north Australia.

Fungal Biopesticide for cattle tick and buffalo fly control

Cattle ticks and buffalo flies impose significant economic burdens on the Northern Australian cattle and dairy industries. With the increased temperatures expected under climate change the range of parasites such as these is likely to extend. Current control options for these ectoparasites are limited by problems associated with chemical resistance and residues. Fungal biopesticides offer a sustainable and promising alternative method of control. Laboratory and animal studies have established the potential for the fungus Metarhizium in tick control and provided data that suggests a secondary effect of buffalo fly control is possible. Small field trials are required to obtain a proof of concept for the control of ticks and buffalo flies on animals.

Despite the relatively few alpha-aminoisobutyric acid residues, the peptide maintains a helical form. The first intrahelical hydrogen bond is of the 3(10) type between N(3) and O(0), followed by five alpha-helix-type hydrogen bonds. Solution 1H NMR studies in chloroform also favor a helical conformation, with seven solvent-shielded NH groups. Continuous columns are formed by head-to-tail hydrogen bonds between the helical molecules along the helix axis. The absence of polar side chains precludes any lateral hydrogen bonds. Since the peptide crystallizes with one molecule in a triclinic space group, aggregation of the helical columns must necessarily be parallel rather than antiparallel. The packing of the columns is rather inefficient, as indicated by very few good van der Waals' contacts and the occurrence of voids between the molecules.
