Constellation Constrained (CC) capacity regions of two-user Gaussian Multiple Access Channels (GMAC) have been recently reported, wherein an appropriate angle of rotation between the constellations of the two users is shown to enlarge the CC capacity region. We refer to such a scheme as the Constellation Rotation (CR) scheme. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme called the Constellation Power Allocation (CPA) scheme, wherein the instantaneous transmit power of the two users are varied by maintaining their average power constraints. We show that the CPA scheme offers CC sum capacities equal (at low SNR values) or close (at high SNR values) to those offered by the CR scheme with reduced decoding complexity for QAM constellations. We study the robustness of the CPA scheme for random phase offsets in the channel and unequal average power constraints for the two users. With random phase offsets in the channel, we show that the CC sum capacity offered by the CPA scheme is more than the CR scheme at high SNR values. With unequal average power constraints, we show that the CPA scheme provides maximum gain when the power levels are close, and the advantage diminishes with the increase in the power difference.

Faraday-type electromagnetic flow meters are employed for measuring the flow rate of liquid sodium in fast breeder reactors. The calibration of such flow meters, owing to the required elaborative arrangements is rather difficult. On the other hand, theoretical approach requires solution of two coupled electromagnetic partial differential equation with profile of the flow and applied magnetic field as the inputs. This is also quite involved due to the 3D nature of the problem. Alternatively, Galerkin finite element method based numerical solution is suggested in the literature as an attractive option for the required calibration. Based on the same, a computer code in Matlab platform has been developed in this work with both 20 and 27 node brick elements. The boundary conditions are correctly defined and several intermediate validation exercises are carried out. Finally it is shown that the sensitivities predicted by the code for flow meters of four different dimensions agrees well with the results given by analytical expression, thereby providing strong validation. Sensitivity for higher flow rates, for which analytical approach does not exist, is shown to decrease with increase in flow velocity.

A rigorous lower bound solution, with the usage of the finite elements limit analysis, has been obtained for finding the ultimate bearing capacity of two interfering strip footings placed on a sandy medium. Smooth as well as rough footingsoil interfaces are considered in the analysis. The failure load for an interfering footing becomes always greater than that for a single isolated footing. The effect of the interference on the failure load (i) for rough footings becomes greater than that for smooth footings, (ii) increases with an increase in phi, and (iii) becomes almost negligible beyond S/B>3. Compared with various theoretical and experimental results reported in literature, the present analysis generally provides the lowest magnitude of the collapse load. This work presents a finite element-based strategy for exterior acoustical problems based on an assumed pressure form that favours outgoing waves. The resulting governing equation, weak formulation, and finite element formulation are developed both for coupled and uncoupled problems. The developed elements are very similar to conventional elements in that they are based on the standard Galerkin variational formulation and use standard Lagrange interpolation functions and standard Gaussian quadrature. In addition and in contrast to wave envelope formulations and their extensions, the developed elements can be used in the immediate vicinity of the radiator/scatterer. The method is similar to the perfectly matched layer (PML) method in the sense that each layer of elements added around the radiator absorbs acoustical waves so that no boundary condition needs to be applied at the outermost boundary where the domain is truncated. By comparing against strategies such as the PML and wave-envelope methods, we show that the relative accuracy, both in the near and far-field results, is considerably higher.

The characterization of a closed-cell aluminum foam with the trade name Alporas is carried out here under compression loading for a nominal cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. Foam samples in the form of cubes are tested in a UTM and the average stress-strain behavior is obtained which clearly displays a plateau strength of approximately 2 MPa. It is noted that the specific energy absorption capacity of the foam can be high despite its low strength which makes it attractive as a material for certain energy-absorbing countermeasures. The mechanical behavior of the present Alporas foam is simulated using cellular (i.e. so-called microstructure-based) and solid element-based finite element models. The efficacy of the cellular approach is shown, perhaps for the first time in published literature, in terms of prediction of both stress-strain response and inclined fold formation during axial crush under compression loading. Keeping in mind future applications under impact loads, limited results are presented when foam samples are subjected to low velocity impact in a drop-weight test set-up.

Several experimental studies have shown that fracture surfaces in brittle metallic glasses (MGs) generally exhibit nanoscale corrugations which may be attributed to the nucleation and coalescence of nanovoids during crack propagation. Recent atomistic simulations suggest that this phenomenon is due to large spatial fluctuations in material properties in a brittle MG, which leads to void nucleation in regions of low atomic density and then catastrophic fracture through void coalescence. To explain this behavior, we propose a model of a heterogeneous solid containing a distribution of weak zones to represent a brittle MG. Plane strain continuum finite element analysis of cavitation in such an elastic-plastic solid is performed with the weak zones idealized as periodically distributed regions having lower yield strength than the background material. It is found that the presence of weak zones can significantly reduce the critical hydrostatic stress for the onset of cavitation which is controlled uniquely by the local yield properties of these zones. Also, the presence of weak zones diminishes the sensitivity of the cavitation stress to the volume fraction of a preexisting void. These results provide plausible explanations for the observations reported in recent atomistic simulations of brittle MGs. An analytical solution for a composite, incompressible elastic-plastic solid with a weak inner core is used to investigate the effect of volume fraction and yield strength of the core on the nature of cavitation bifurcation. It is shown that snap-cavitation may occur, giving rise to sudden formation of voids with finite size, which does not happen in a homogeneous plastic solid. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. We develop a unified model to explain the dynamics of driven one dimensional ribbon for materials with strain and magnetic order parameters. We show that the model equations in their most general form explain several results on driven magnetostrictive metallic glass ribbons such as the period doubling route to chaos as a function of a dc magnetic field in the presence of a sinusoidal field, the quasiperiodic route to chaos as a function of the sinusoidal field for a fixed dc field, and induced and suppressed chaos in the presence of an additional low amplitude near resonant sinusoidal field. We also investigate the influence of a low amplitude near resonant field on the period doubling route. The model equations also exhibit symmetry restoring crisis with an exponent close to unity. The model can be adopted to explain certain results on magnetoelastic beam and martensitic ribbon under sinusoidal driving conditions. In the latter case, we find interesting dynamics of a periodic one orbit switching between two equivalent wells as a function of an ac magnetic field that eventually makes a direct transition to chaos under resonant driving condition. The model is also applicable to magnetomartensites and materials with two order parameters. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4790845]

The way in which basal tractions, associated with mantle convection, couples with the lithosphere is a fundamental problem in geodynamics. A successful lithosphere-mantle coupling model for the Earth will satisfy observations of plate motions, intraplate stresses, and the plate boundary zone deformation. We solve the depth integrated three-dimensional force balance equations in a global finite element model that takes into account effects of both topography and shallow lithosphere structure as well as tractions originating from deeper mantle convection. The contribution from topography and lithosphere structure is estimated by calculating gravitational potential energy differences. The basal tractions are derived from a fully dynamic flow model with both radial and lateral viscosity variations. We simultaneously fit stresses and plate motions in order to delineate a best-fit lithosphere-mantle coupling model. We use both the World Stress Map and the Global Strain Rate Model to constrain the models. We find that a strongly coupled model with a stiff lithosphere and 3-4 orders of lateral viscosity variations in the lithosphere are best able to match the observational constraints. Our predicted deviatoric stresses, which are dominated by contribution from mantle tractions, range between 20-70 MPa. The best-fitting coupled models predict strain rates that are consistent with observations. That is, the intraplate areas are nearly rigid whereas plate boundaries and some other continental deformation zones display high strain rates. Comparison of mantle tractions and surface velocities indicate that in most areas tractions are driving, although in a few regions, including western North America, tractions are resistive. The effect of strain rate, (epsilon) over dot, and temperature, T, on the tension-compression asymmetry (TCA) in a dilute and wrought Mg alloy, AM30, over a temperature range that covers both twin accommodated deformation (below 250 degrees C in compression) as well as dislocation-mediated plasticity (above 250 degrees C) has been investigated. For this purpose, uniaxial tension and compression tests were conducted at T ranging from 25 to 400 degrees C with (epsilon) over dot varying between 10(-2) and 10 s(-1). In most of the cases, the stress-strain responses in tension and compression are distinctly different; with compression responses `concaving upward,' due to {10 (1) over bar2} tensile twinning at lower plastic strains followed by slip and strain hardening at higher levels of deformation, for T below 250 degrees C. This results in significant levels of TCA at T < 250 degrees C, reducing substantially at high temperatures. At T=150 and 250 degrees C, high (epsilon) over dot leads to high TCA, in particular at T=250 degrees C and (epsilon) over dot=10 s(-1), suggesting that twin-mediated plastic deformation takes precedence at high rates of loading even at sufficiently high T. TCA becomes negligible at T=350 degrees C; however at T=400 degrees C, as (epsilon) over dot increases TCA gets higher. Microscopy of the deformed samples, carried out by using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), suggests that at T > 250 degrees C dynamic recrystallization begins between accompanied by reduction in the twinned fraction that contributes to the decrease of the TCA.

The classical Chapman-Enskog expansion is performed for the recently proposed finite-volume formulation of lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) method D.V. Patil, K.N. Lakshmisha, Finite volume TVD formulation of lattice Boltzmann simulation on unstructured mesh, J. Comput. Phys. 228 (2009) 5262-5279]. First, a modified partial differential equation is derived from a numerical approximation of the discrete Boltzmann equation. Then, the multi-scale, small parameter expansion is followed to recover the continuity and the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations with additional error terms. The expression for apparent value of the kinematic viscosity is derived for finite-volume formulation under certain assumptions. The attenuation of a shear wave, Taylor-Green vortex flow and driven channel flow are studied to analyze the apparent viscosity relation.

We address the problem of sampling and reconstruction of two-dimensional (2-D) finite-rate-of-innovation (FRI) signals. We propose a three-channel sampling method for efficiently solving the problem. We consider the sampling of a stream of 2-D Dirac impulses and a sum of 2-D unit-step functions. We propose a 2-D causal exponential function as the sampling kernel. By causality in 2-D, we mean that the function has its support restricted to the first quadrant. The advantage of using a multichannel sampling method with causal exponential sampling kernel is that standard annihilating filter or root-finding algorithms are not required. Further, the proposed method has inexpensive hardware implementation and is numerically stable as the number of Dirac impulses increases.

In this work, the wave propagation analysis of built-up composite structures is performed using frequency domain spectral finite elements, to study the high frequency wave responses. The paper discusses basically two methods for modeling stiffened structures. In the first method, the concept of assembly of 2D spectral plate elements is used to model a built-up structure. In the second approach, spectral finite element method (SFEM) model is developed to model skin-stiffener structures, where the skin is considered as plate element and the stiffener as beam element. The SFEM model developed using the plate-beam coupling approach is then used to model wave propagation in a multiple stiffened structure and also extended to model the stiffened structures with different cross sections such as T-section, I-section and hat section. A number of parametric studies are performed to capture the mode coupling, that is, the flexural-axial coupling present in the wave responses.

Periodic-finite-type shifts (PFT's) are sofic shifts which forbid the appearance of finitely many pre-specified words in a periodic manner. The class of PFT's strictly includes the class of shifts of finite type (SFT's). The zeta function of a PET is a generating function for the number of periodic sequences in the shift. For a general sofic shift, there exists a formula, attributed to Manning and Bowen, which computes the zeta function of the shift from certain auxiliary graphs constructed from a presentation of the shift. In this paper, we derive an interesting alternative formula computable from certain ``word-based graphs'' constructed from the periodically-forbidden word description of the PET. The advantages of our formula over the Manning-Bowen formula are discussed.

In this letter, we compute the secrecy rate of decode-and-forward (DF) relay beamforming with finite input alphabet of size M. Source and relays operate under a total power constraint. First, we observe that the secrecy rate with finite-alphabet input can go to zero as the total power increases, when we use the source power and the relay weights obtained assuming Gaussian input. This is because the capacity of an eavesdropper can approach the finite-alphabet capacity of 1/2 log(2) M with increasing total power, due to the inability to completely null in the direction of the eavesdropper. We then propose a transmit power control scheme where the optimum source power and relay weights are obtained by carrying out transmit power (source power plus relay power) control on DF with Gaussian input using semi-definite programming, and then obtaining the corresponding source power and relay weights which maximize the secrecy rate for DF with finite-alphabet input. The proposed power control scheme is shown to achieve increasing secrecy rates with increasing total power with a saturation behavior at high total powers.

While Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors have been extensively used for temperature and strain sensing, clad etched FBGs (EFBGs) have only recently been explored for refractive index sensing. Prior literature in EFBG based refractive index sensing predominantly deals with bulk refractometry only, where the Bragg wavelength shift of the sensor as a function of the bulk refractive index of the sample can be analytically modeled, unlike the situation for adsorption of molecular thin films on the sensor surface. We used a finite element model to calculate the Bragg wavelength change as a function of thickness and refractive index of the adsorbing molecular layer and compared the model with the real-time, in-situ measurement of electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of weak polyelectrolytes on the silica surface of EFBGs. We then used this model to calculate the layer thickness of LbL films and found them to be in agreement with literature. Further, we used this model to arrive at a realistic estimate of the limit of detection of EFBG sensors based on nominal measurement noise levels in current FBG interrogation systems and found that sufficiently thinned EFBGs can provide a competitive platform for real-time measurement of molecular interactions while simultaneously leveraging the high multiplexing capabilities of fiber optics.
