Carbon nanoscrolls (graphene layers rolled up into papyrus-like tubular structures) are nanostructures with unique and interesting characteristics that could be exploited to build several new nanodevices. However, an efficient and controlled synthesis of these structures was not achieved yet, making its large scale production a challenge to materials scientists. Also, the formation process and detailed mechanisms that occur during its synthesis are not completely known. In this work, using fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we discuss a possible route to nanoscrolls made from graphene layers deposited over silicon oxide substrates containing chambers/pits. The scrolling mechanism is triggered by carbon nanotubes deposited on the layers. The process is completely general and can be used to produce scrolls from other lamellar materials, like boron nitride, for instance. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

In order to evaluate the hind limbs of caviomorph rodents a descriptive analysis of the Cuniculus paca (Linnaeus, 1766) and Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (Linnaeus, 1766) was performed using anatomical specimens, radiography, computed tomography (CT) and full-coloured prototype models to generate bone anatomy data. The appendicular skeleton of the two largest rodents of Neotropical America was compared with the previously reported anatomical features of Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout, 1769) and domestic Cavia porcellus (Linnaeus, 1758). The structures were analyzed macroscopically and particular findings of each species reported. Features including the presence of articular fibular projection and lunulae were observed in the stifle joint of all rodents. Imaging aided in anatomical description and, specifically in the identification of bone structures in Cuniculus paca and Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. The imaging findings were correlated with the anatomical structures observed. The data may be used in future studies comparing these animals to other rodents and mammalian species. © 2012 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.

Most of the established procedures for analysis of aeroelastic flutter in the development of aircraft are based on frequency domain methods. Proposing new methodologies in this field is always a challenge, because the new methods need to be validated by many experimental procedures. With the interest for new flight control systems and nonlinear behavior of aeroelastic structures, other strategies may be necessary to complete the analysis of such systems. If the aeroelastic model can be written in time domain, using state-space formulation, for instance, then many of the tools used in stability analysis of dynamic systems may be used to help providing an insight into the aeroelastic phenomenon. In this respect, this paper presents a discussion on the use of Gramian matrices to determine conditions of aeroelastic flutter. The main goal of this work is to introduce how observability gramian matrix can be used to identify the system instability. To explain the approach, the theory is outlined and simulations are carried out on two benchmark problems. Results are compared with classical methods to validate the approach and a reduction of computational time is obtained for the second example. © 2013 Douglas Domingues Bueno et al.

The description of the larva of Amblyomma romitii Tonelli-Rondelli is based on optical and scanning electron microscopy. Larvae were obtained under laboratory conditions from an engorged female collected on capybara from Rurópolis municipality, State of Pará, Northern Brazil. Several characters are presented including the chaetotaxy of idiosoma, palpi and Haller's organ. The larval porotaxy (topographical and numerical patterns of integumentary structures) was presented and compared to that of the other Amblyomma spp. larvae. The mitochondrial 16S rDNA partial sequence of A. romitii generated in the present study was aligned with sequences previously determined for other Amblyomma species available in Genbank and with some species presently sequenced. The larval morphology of A. romitii and other Neotropical Amblyomma spp. larvae is discussed as well as the DNA sequence and its phylogenetic position among other species of the genus. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

The tetrahydroquinoline derivatives can be easily synthesized through Povarov reaction and have several important biological activities. This work describes a comparative study for the unequivocal assignment of molecular structure of different tetrahydroquinoline derivatives, through a complete analysis of NMR 1D and 2D NMR spectra (1H, 13C, COSY, HSQC, and HMBC), and the correlation this data with theoretical calculations of energy-minimization and chemical shift (δ), employing the theory level of DFT/B3LYP with set of the cc-pVDZ basis. For these derivatives the experimental analyses and the theoretical model adopted were sufficient to obtain a good description of its structures, and these results can be used to assign the structure of various others tetrahydroquinoline derivatives. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

The influence of current density, at the interval 5-100 mA cm-2, on the structural and magnetic properties of electrodeposited (Co 100-xNix)100-yWy alloys (x = 23-33.5 at. % Ni, y = 1.7-7.3 at. % W) was studied from a glycine-containing bath. W-content decreases with the increase of the current density magnitude. X-ray data have shown stabilization of hexagonal close packed, face centered cubic or a mixture of these structures by modulating the applied cathodic current density, for values lower than 50 mA cm-2. Two structural phase transitions were observed: one from hexagonal close packed to face centered cubic structural transition occurring for a current density of 20 mA cm -2, and another one, from cubic crystalline phase to amorphous state, which happens for values higher than 50 mA cm-2. These structural phase transitions seem to be associated with the W-content as well as average crystalline grain sizes that reduce with increasing the current density value. The grain size effect may explain the face centered cubic stabilization in Co-rich CoNiW alloys, which was initially assumed to be basically due to H-adsorption/incorporation. Magnetic properties of Co-rich CoNiW alloys are strongly modified by the current density value; as a result of the changes on the W-content and their structural properties© 2013 Elsevier B.V. As pontes ferroviárias de concreto armado estão sujeitas às ações dinâmicas variáveis devido ao tráfego de veículos. Estas ações podem resultar no fenômeno de fadiga do aço e do concreto dessas estruturas. No dimensionamento de estruturas de concreto armado sujeitas à carregamento cíclico, de modo geral, a fadiga é considerada simplificadamente, por meio de um coeficiente kf, denominado coeficiente de fadiga. Esse coeficiente majora a área de aço inicialmente calculada para atender ao Estado Limite Último (ELU), com a finalidade de limitar, em serviço, as variações de tensões no aço de modo a garantir uma vida útil de no mínimo 2.000.000 de ciclos. O presente trabalho apresenta melhorias nas hipóteses utilizadas pelo coeficiente de fadiga kf, permitindo o dimensionamento de armaduras longitudinais sujeitas à fadiga, para números de ciclos superiores a 2 milhões, que é o valor proposto pelo EB-3/67, e também de forma a atender a vida útil à fadiga especificada em projeto. Neste caso, foi necessário propor um método simplificado para a estimativa do número de ciclos operacionais, apartir de um ciclo padrão obtido pela máxima variação de momentos fletores provocados pelo tremtipo carregado. O estudo foi desenvolvido tomando-se como protótipo um viaduto ferroviário isostático em concreto armado da Estrada de Ferro Carajás (EFC). Os trens-tipo utilizados foram os quais operam atualmente na EFC, que correspondem ao trem de minério Carregado e Descarregado. Para determinação dos esforços solicitantes na estrutura foi elaborado um modelo numérico no programa SAP 2000. A vida útil à fadiga das armaduras longitudinais foram determinadas apartir da regra de dano de Miner e das curvas S-N da NBR 6118. A metodologia proposta neste trabalho permitiu o dimensionamento nas armaduras longitudinais à fadiga satisfatoriamente em relação à vida útil especificada no projeto, sendo que as vidas úteis que tiveram maior divergência em relação ao valor estipulado foram as de 300 e 400 anos.

In this paper, we present an algorithm for full-wave electromagnetic analysis of nanoplasmonic structures. We use the three-dimensional Method of Moments to solve the electric field integral equation. The computational algorithm is developed in the language C. As examples of application of the code, the problems of scattering from a nanosphere and a rectangular nanorod are analyzed. The calculated characteristics are the near field distribution and the spectral response of these nanoparticles. The convergence of the method for different discretization sizes is also discussed.

The pristine boron nitride nanotubes have a large direct band gap around 5 eV. This band gap can be engineered by doping. We investigate electronic structure of the doped hexagonal boron nitride (5,5) nanotubes using the linearized augmented cylindrical wave method. In particular, this work focuses on systematical study of the band gap and the density of states around the Fermi-level when the nanotubes are doped by intrinsic impurities of two substitutional boron atoms in a super cell and a comparative analysis of the relative stability of three structures studied here. This corresponds to 3.3% of impurity concentration. We calculate 29 configurations of the nanotubes with different positions of the intrinsic impurities in the nanotube. The band gap and density of states around the Fermi level show strong dependence on the relative positions of the impurity atoms. The two defect sub bands called D(B) appear in the band gap of the pristine nanotube. The doped nanotubes possess p-type semiconductor properties with the band gap of 1.3-1.9 eV.
