Using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), a 3D microflowery indium hydroxide [In(OH)(3)] structure assembled from 2D nanoflakes was fabricated in a large quantity via a hydrothermal approach at relative low temperature. The obtained In(OH)(3) flowers exhibited a narrow size range between 4 and 6 mu m. The properties of these composites were characterized by XRD, EDX, FE-SEM, TEM, SAED, and TGA. In this work, both the use of urea and SDS and the amounts of these components played important roles in the formation of In(OH)3 with different nanostructures.

Porous SnO2 and SnO2-Eu3+ nanorods have been facilely prepared using triphenyltin hydroxide microrods as precursors. The porous structure of SnO2 nanorods, which was aggregated by small SnO2 nanocrystallites, has been confirmed by TEM images and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The optical property of the porous SnO2-Eu3+ nanorods was investigated by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra.

Four novel diimine rhenium(I) carbonyl complexes with the formula [Re(CO)(3)(L) Br], where L = 2-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl) phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline (P1), 2-(4-(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl) phenyl)-1H-imidazo-[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline (P2), 2-(4-(6-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-9H-3,9'-bicarbazol-9-yl) phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline (D1), and 2-(4-(3', 6'-di-tert-butyl-6-(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl)-9H-3,9'-bicarbazol-9-yl) phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10] phenanthroline (D2), have been successfully synthesized and fully characterized by (HNMR)-H-1, IR, and UV-Vis, etc. The luminescence quantum yields (LQYs) of the parent Re(I) complexes P1 and P2 are 0.13 and 0.16, respectively, which are much higher than the previously reported Re(I) dendrimers. The HOMOs and the LUMOs of P1 and P2 are calculated to be mainly composed of [d(Re) + pi(CO + Br)] and pi*(L) orbital, respectively.

A novel diimine Cu(I)complex [Cu(ABPQ)(DPEphos)]BF4 [ABPQ and DPEphos are acenaphtho[1,2-b]bipyrido[2,3-h:3,2-f]quinoxaline and bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl) ether, respectively] is synthesized, and its photophysical properties are experimentally and theoretically characterized. The emission bands centered at ca. 400/470 and 550 nm of [Cu(ABPQ)(DPEphos)]BF4 are attributed to the ligand-centered pi -> pi* transition and the metal-to-ligand charge transfer d pi(Cu) -> pi*(N-N) transition, respectively. The luminescence quantum yield of [Cu(ABPQ)(DPEphos)]BF4 in CHCl3 is found to be about five times higher than that of [Cu(Phen)(DPEphos)]BF4.

In this paper, a quantum chemistry method was used to investigate the effect of different sizes of substituted phenanthrolines on absorption, energy transfer, and the electroluminescent performance of a series of Eu(TTA)(3)L (L = [1,10] phenanthroline (Phen), Pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline (PyPhen), 2-methylprrazino[2,3-f][1,10] phenanthroline(MPP), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine(DPPz), 11-methyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'c]phenazine(MDPz), 11.12-dimethyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine(DDPz), and benzo[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (BDPz)) complexes. Absorption spectra calculations show that different sizes of secondary ligands have different effects on transition characters, intensities, and absorption peak positions.

Two bromo rhenium(I) carbonyl complexes with the formula of [Re(CO)(3)(L)Br], where L = 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen-Re) and 5-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (Pyph-Re), were successfully synthesized with the aim to analyze the effect of the pyrrole (Py) moiety on the photophysical properties of Pyph-Re. It was found that the triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer d pi (Re) --> pi*(N-N) emission of Phen-Re and Pyph-Re centered at ca. 527 nm with the luminescence quantum yield (LQY) of 0.015 and ca. 578 nm with the LQY of 0.011, respectively. At the same time, the geometrical structures of the ground state and the absorption spectral properties of Phen-Re and Pyph-Re were also calculated with the 6-31G* basis set employed on C, H, N, O, and Br atoms, and LANL2DZ adopted on Re atom.

The quantum yield, lifetime, and absorption spectrum of four [Ru(bpy)(2)L](+) [where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridyl; L is represented by the deprotonated form of 2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (L1) or 2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine (L2)], as well as their methylated complexes [Ru(bpy)(2)LMe](2+) (RuL1Me and RuL2Me) are closely ligand dependent. In this paper, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) were performed to compare the above properties among these complexes. The calculated results reveal that the replacement of pyridine by pyrazine or the attachment of a CH3 group to the tetrazolate ring greatly increases the pi-accepting ability of the ancillary ligands.

Layer-controlled hierarchical flowerlike AgIn(MoO4)(2) microstructures with "clean" surfaces using submicroplates as building blocks without introducing any template have been fabricated through a low-cost hydrothermal method. The near-infrared luminescence of lanthanide ion (Nd, Er, and Yb) doped AgIn(MoO4)(2) microstructures, in the 1300-1600 nm region, was discussed and is of particular interest for telecommunication applications. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize these materials.

Ternary europium complex Eu(tta)(3)phen was covalently bonded with the general mesoporous. material SBA-15 and SBA-15-type of periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) material via impregnation of Eu(tta)(3)center dot 2H(2)O into phen-S15 and phen-PMO, respectively, through a ligand exchange reaction. The parent materials of phen-S15 and phen-PMO were synthesized by co-condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) or 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE) and the functionalized chelate ligand 5-(N,N-bis(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl)ureyl-1,10-phenanthroline (phen-Si) in the presence of Pluronic P123 surfactant as template, which were confirmed by SEM, XRD, FTIR, Si-29 CP-MAS NMR, and N-2 adsorption measurements.

A novel periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) material was synthesized through one-step co-condensation of 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE) and benzoic acid-functionalized organosilane (BA-Si) using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a structure-directing agent under basic conditions. The materials were fully characterized by FTIR, XRD, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and FESEM. FTIR spectra proved that BA-Si was successfully incorporated into the PMO materials (PMOs) via benzyl group as a linker. XRD and N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms revealed the characteristic mesoporous structure with highly uniform pore size distributions. FESEM confirmed that the morphology of the PMOs was significantly dependent cri the molar ratio of two organosilica precursors.

A urea-based bis-silylated bipyridine ligand derived from 4,4'-diamino-2,2'-bipyridine has been prepared. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials with a high loading of lanthanide 2,2-bipyridine moieties were obtained by using the silylated bipyridine as the only siloxane network precursor in the presence of lanthanide ions (or lanthanide complexes). The in-situ formation of lanthanide complexes from lanthanide ions and the silylated bipyridine during the sol-gel processing was confirmed by the luminescence behavior of the obtained hybrid materials and that of the corresponding pure lanthanide complex [Ln(bpy)(2)Cl-3 center dot 2H(2)O].

A series of novel, colorless, and transparent sot-gel derived hybrid materials Ln-DBM-Si covalently grafted with Ln(DBM-OH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O (where DBM-OH = o-hydroxydibenzoylmethane, Ln = Nd, Er, Yb, and Sin) were prepared through the primary beta-diketone ligand DBM-OH. The structures and optical properties of Ln-DBM-Si were studied in detail. The investigation results revealed that the lanthanide complexes were successfully in situ grafted into the corresponding hybrids Ln-DBM-Si. Upon excitation at the maximum absorption of ligands, the resultant materials displayed excellent near-infrared luminescence.

Relationship between charge transfer energies E-CT of Yb3+ and Sm3+ and environmental factors h(e) in various crystals was investigated using a dielectric chemical bond method. Both results show that they have an exponential relation E-CT = A+B exp(-kh(e)), but the exponential factors are different, which indicates that the interaction between the rare earth ions and environment is connected with the kind of rare earth ion. This result provides a method of determining charge transfer energies of Yb3+ and Sm3+ from a crystal structure.

A series of oligoaniline-functionalized mono- and bis-topic terpyridine ligands, i.e. C6H5[N(R)C6H4](n)TPY (R = H, butyl, tert-butyloxycarbonyl; n = 1-4; TPY = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridyl) and TPYC6H4[N(R)C6H4](m)TPY (R = H, tert-butyloxycarbonyl; m = 2, 4), and the corresponding monoand bis-nuclear ruthenium(II) complexes have been synthesized and verified. The spectroscopic results indicate that two kinds of pi-pi* transitions from TPY and oligoaniline fragments of ligands strongly shift to lower energy, and the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition ((MLCT)-M-1) bands of all obtained complexes are considerably red-shifted (Delta lambda(max) = 22-64 nm) and their intensities become much more intense (approximately 4-6 times), compared with those of the reported complex [Ru(TPY)(2)](2+). Moreover, the spectroscopic properties of the ligands and complexes with longer oligoaniline units (n = 3, 4) are markedly influenced by the external stimulus, such as the oxidation and proton acid doping.

A series of novel, long-chain-substituted, porphyrin derivatives, meso-tetra (4-alkylamidophenyl) porphyrin ligands and their Zn complexes (alkyl = 8,10,12,14,16,18) were prepared by acylation of the amino groups of 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin by alkyl chloride. Mesomorphism was investigated by DSC, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Only ligands containing chains > 12 carbon atoms displayed liquid crystalline behaviour, which exhibited a high phase transition temperature and a broad mesophase temperature span, Zn complexes showed no liquid crystalline behaviour. Cyclic voltammetry, luminescence spectra and surface photovoltage spectroscopy revealed that covalent linking of an alkylamido group to the tetraphenylporphyrin molecule influences, significantly, the properties of the porphyrin macrocycle.
