The deformation behaviour of macrocrystalline and nanocrystalline nickel shows a striking similarity in terms of higher intragranular misorientation and a texture with dominant Brass component on rolling. This is in contrast to microcrystalline nickel, with lower intragranular misorientation and typical Copper type texture. This has been attributed to the free surfaces in macrocrystalline sample and grain boundaries in nanocrystalline sample. Experimental evidence of `Grain Boundary Affected Zone' (GBAZ) showing multi-slip in contrast to limited slip in the grain interiors has been provided. The similarity in evolution of texture and intragranular misorientation is explained on the basis of reduced contribution from the GBAZ at the two extreme length scales.

The nanoindentation technique can be employed in shape memory alloys (SMAs) to discern the transformation temperatures as well as to characterize their mechanical behavior. In this paper, we use it with simultaneous measurements of the mechanical and the electrical contact resistances (ECR) at room temperature to probe two SMAs: austenite (RTA) and martensite (RTM). Two different types of indenter tips - Berkovich and spherical - are employed to examine the SMAs' indentation responses as a function of the representative strain, epsilon(R). In Berkovich indentation, because of the sharp nature of the tip, and in consequence the high levels of strain imposed, discerning the two SMAs on the basis of the indentation response alone is difficult. In the case of the spherical tip, epsilon(R) is systematically varied and its effect on the depth recovery ratio, eta(d), is examined. Results indicate that RTA has higher eta(d) than RTM, but the difference decreases with increasing epsilon(R) such that eta(d) values for both the alloys would be similar in the fully plastic regime. The experimental trends in eta(d) vs. epsilon(R) for both the alloys could be described well with a eta(d) proportional to (epsilon(R))(-1) type equation, which is developed on the basis of a phenomenological model. This fit, in turn, directs us to the maximum epsilon(R), below which plasticity underneath the indenter would not mask the differences in the two SMAs. It was demonstrated that the ECR measurements complement the mechanical measurements in demarcating the reverse transformation from martensite to austenite during unloading of RTA, wherein a marked increase in the voltage was noted. A correlation between recovery due to reverse transformation during unloading and increase in voltage (and hence the electrical resistance) was found. (C) 2013 Acta Materialia Inc. Many fishes are exposed to air in their natural habitat or during their commercial handling. In natural habitat or during commercial handling, the cat fish Heteropneustes fossilis is exposed to air for > 24 h. Data on its oxidative metabolism in the above condition are not available. Oxidative stress (OS) indices (lipid and protein oxidation), toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS: H2O2) generation, antioxidative status (levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and reductase, ascorbic acid and nonprotein sulfhydryl) and activities of electron transport chain (ETC) enzymes (complex I-IV) were investigated in brain tissue of H. fossilis under air exposure condition (0, 3, 6, 12 and 18 h at 25 degrees C). Decreased activities of antioxidant (except catalase) and ETC enzymes (except complex II) with increased H2O2 and OS levels were observed in the tissue under water deprivation condition. Positive correlation was observed for complex II activity and non-protein thiol groups with time period of air exposure. The critical time period to induce OS and to reduce most of the studied antioxidant level in brain was found to be 3-6 h air exposure. The data can be useful to minimize the stress generated during commercial handling of the live fishes those exposed to air in general and H. fossilis in particular. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. Thermoacoustics is the interaction between heat and sound, which are useful in designing heat engines and heat pumps. Research in the field of thermoacoustics focuses on the demand to improve the performance which is achieved by altering operational, geometrical and fluid parameters. The present study deals with improving the performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover, which has gained the significant importance in the recent years for the production of high amplitude sound waves. The performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover is evaluated in terms of onset temperature difference, resonance frequency and pressure amplitude of the acoustic waves by varying the resonator length and charge pressures of fluid medium nitrogen. DeltaEC, the free simulation software developed by LANL, USA is employed in the present study to simulate the performance of twin thermoacoustic prime mover. Experimental and simulated results are compared and the deviation is found to be within 10%.

Effect of stress and interface defects on photo luminescence property of a silicon nano-crystal (Si-nc) embedded in amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2) are studied in this paper using a self-consistent quantum-continuum based modeling framework. Si-ncs or quantum dots show photoluminescence at room temperature. Whether its origin is due to Si-nc/a-SiO2 interface defects or quantum confinement of carriers in Si-nc is still an outstanding question. Earlier reports have shown that stresses greater than 12 GPa change the indirect energy band gap structure of bulk Si to a direct energy band gap structure. Such stresses are observed very often in nanostructures and these stresses influence the carrier confinement energy significantly. Hence, it is important to determine the effect of stress in addition to the structure of interface defects on photoluminescence property of Si-nc. In the present work, first a Si-nc embedded in a-SiO2 is constructed using molecular dynamics simulation framework considering the actual conditions they are grown so that the interface and residual stress in the structure evolves naturally during formation. We observe that the structure thus created has an interface of about 1 nm thick consisting of 41.95% of defective states mostly Sin+ (n = 0 to 3) coordination states. Further, both the Si-nc core and the embedding matrix are observed to be under a compressive strain. This residual strain field is applied in an effective mass k.p Hamiltonian formulation to determine the energy states of the carriers. The photo luminescence property computed based on the carrier confinement energy and interface energy states associated with defects will be analysed in details in the paper.

Traditional taxonomy based on morphology has often failed in accurate species identification owing to the occurrence of cryptic species, which are reproductively isolated but morphologically identical. Molecular data have thus been used to complement morphology in species identification. The sexual advertisement calls in several groups of acoustically communicating animals are species-specific and can thus complement molecular data as non-invasive tools for identification. Several statistical tools and automated identifier algorithms have been used to investigate the efficiency of acoustic signals in species identification. Despite a plethora of such methods, there is a general lack of knowledge regarding the appropriate usage of these methods in specific taxa. In this study, we investigated the performance of two commonly used statistical methods, discriminant function analysis (DFA) and cluster analysis, in identification and classification based on acoustic signals of field cricket species belonging to the subfamily Gryllinae. Using a comparative approach we evaluated the optimal number of species and calling song characteristics for both the methods that lead to most accurate classification and identification. The accuracy of classification using DFA was high and was not affected by the number of taxa used. However, a constraint in using discriminant function analysis is the need for a priori classification of songs. Accuracy of classification using cluster analysis, which does not require a priori knowledge, was maximum for 6-7 taxa and decreased significantly when more than ten taxa were analysed together. We also investigated the efficacy of two novel derived acoustic features in improving the accuracy of identification. Our results show that DFA is a reliable statistical tool for species identification using acoustic signals. Our results also show that cluster analysis of acoustic signals in crickets works effectively for species classification and identification.

Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive nosocomial pathogen. The prevalence of multidrug-resistant S. aureus strains in both hospital and community settings makes it imperative to characterize new drug targets to combat S. aureus infections. In this context, enzymes involved in cell-wall maintenance and essential amino-acid biosynthesis are significant drug targets. Homoserine dehydrogenase (HSD) is an oxidoreductase that is involved in the reversible conversion of l-aspartate semialdehyde to l-homoserine in a dinucleotide cofactor-dependent reduction reaction. HSD is thus a crucial intermediate enzyme linked to the biosynthesis of several essential amino acids such as lysine, methionine, isoleucine and threonine.

This article presents the investigation of the coordination behavior of a newly synthesized tricarboxylate ligand, obtained by joining imidazole dicarboxylic acid and 4-carboxybenzyl moieties cbimdaH(3), 1-(4-carboxybenzyl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid]. Two novel coordination polymers were obtained through solvothermal reactions under similar conditions namely Sr(cbimdaH)(H2O)](n) (1) and Cd-2(cbimdaH)(2)(H2O)(6)](n)center dot(DMF)(3n)(H2O)(3n) (2), with the ligand behaving as a dianionic tricarboxylate linker. The single crystal X-ray structures show that while 1 forms a 3D coordination polymer, 2 forms a 1D polymer which is further assembled in three dimensions through supramolecular interactions (H-bonding). Complex 1 consists of Sr2+ ions in a distorted dodecahedral coordination geometry, while 2 consists of Cd2+ ions in distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometries. A topology study reveals that 1 has a new topology based on the 5,6-coordinated 3D net architecture. The luminescence properties of the complexes in the solid state and their thermal stabilities were studied.

Stochastic modelling is a useful way of simulating complex hard-rock aquifers as hydrological properties (permeability, porosity etc.) can be described using random variables with known statistics. However, very few studies have assessed the influence of topological uncertainty (i.e. the variability of thickness of conductive zones in the aquifer), probably because it is not easy to retrieve accurate statistics of the aquifer geometry, especially in hard rock context. In this paper, we assessed the potential of using geophysical surveys to describe the geometry of a hard rock-aquifer in a stochastic modelling framework. The study site was a small experimental watershed in South India, where the aquifer consisted of a clayey to loamy-sandy zone (regolith) underlain by a conductive fissured rock layer (protolith) and the unweathered gneiss (bedrock) at the bottom. The spatial variability of the thickness of the regolith and fissured layers was estimated by electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) profiles, which were performed along a few cross sections in the watershed. For stochastic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation, the generated random layer thickness was made conditional to the available data from the geophysics. In order to simulate steady state flow in the irregular domain with variable geometry, we used an isoparametric finite element method to discretize the flow equation over an unstructured grid with irregular hexahedral elements. The results indicated that the spatial variability of the layer thickness had a significant effect on reducing the simulated effective steady seepage flux and that using the conditional simulations reduced the uncertainty of the simulated seepage flux. As a conclusion, combining information on the aquifer geometry obtained from geophysical surveys with stochastic modelling is a promising methodology to improve the simulation of groundwater flow in complex hard-rock aquifers. We investigated area changes in glaciers covering an area of similar to 200 km(2) in the Tista basin, Sikkim, Eastern Indian Himalaya, between similar to 1990 and 2010 using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Indian Remote-sensing Satellite (IRS) images and related the changes to debris cover, supraglacial lakes and moraine-dam lakes. The glaciers lost an area of 3.3 +/- 0.8% between 1989/90 and 2010. More detailed analysis revealed an area loss of 2.00 +/- 0.82, 2.56 +/- 0.61 and 2.28 +/- 2.01 km(2) for the periods 1989-97, 1997-2004/05 and 2004-2009/10, respectively. This indicates an accelerated retreat of glaciers after 1997. On further analysis, we observed (1) the formation and expansion of supraglacial lakes on many debris-covered glaciers and (2) the merging of these lakes over time, leading to the development of large moraine-dam lakes. We also observed that debris-covered glaciers with lakes lose a greater area than debris-covered glaciers without lakes and debris-free glaciers. The climatic data for 24 years (1987-2011), measured at the Gangtok meteorological station (1812 m a.s.l.), showed that the region experienced a 1.0 degrees C rise in the summer minimum temperature and a 2.0 degrees C rise in the winter minimum temperature, indicating hotter summers and warmer winters. There was no significant trend in the total annual precipitation. We find that glacier retreat is caused mainly by a temperature increase and that debris-covered glaciers can retreat at a faster rate than debris-free glaciers, if associated with lakes.

Detailed analysis of alternating current impedance data of LiMn2O4 electrodes measured at several temperatures and potentials was carried out. The Nyquist plots generally consisted of semicircles corresponding to two time constants. However, at low temperatures (-10 to 10 A degrees C) and potential region between 3.90 and 4.20 V, three time constants were present. The third semicircle present at the middle to high frequency range was attributed to electronic resistance of LiMn2O4. Impedance parameters were evaluated using appropriate electrical equivalent circuits. From the temperature dependence of resistive parameters, activation energy values for the corresponding processes were calculated.

Microstructure and texture are known to undergo drastic modifications due to trace hypoeutectic boron addition (similar to 0.1wt.%) for various titanium alloys e.g. Ti-6Al-4V. The deformation behaviour of such an alloy Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B is investigated in the (+) phase field and compared against that of the base alloy Ti-6Al-4V studied under selfsame conditions. The deformation microstructures for the two alloys display bending and kinking of lamellae in near and softening via globularization of lamella in near phase regimes, respectively. The transition temperature at which pure slip based deformation changes to softening is lower for the boron added alloy. The presence of TiB particles is largely held attributable for the early softening of Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy. The compression texture of both the alloys carry signature of pure phase defamation at lower temperature and phase transformation near the transus temperature. Texture is influenced by a complex interplay of the deformation and transformation processes in the intermediate temperature range. The contribution from phase transformation is prominent for Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy at comparatively lower temperature.

The thermoacoustic prime mover (TAPM) has gained considerable attention as a pressure wave generator to drive pulse tube refrigerator (PTR) due to no moving parts, reasonable efficiency, use of environmental friendly working fluids etc. To drive PTCs, lower frequencies (f) with larger pressure amplitudes (Delta P) are essential, which are affected by geometric and operating parameters of TAPM as well as working fluids. For driving PTRs, a twin standing wave TAPM is built and studied by using different working fluids such as helium, argon, nitrogen and their binary mixtures. Simulation results of DeltaEc are compared with experimental data wherever possible. DeltaEc predicts slightly increased resonance frequencies, but gives larger Delta P and lower temperature difference Delta T across stack. High mass number working fluid leads to lower frequency with larger Delta P, but higher Delta T. Studies indicate that the binary gas mixture of right composition with lower Delta T can be arrived at to drive TAPM of given geometry. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd and IIR. All rights reserved.

Reaction of cobalt(II) perchlorate hexahydrate with a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand, HL (2-methoxy-6-(2-diethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol) in presence of sodium azide and sodium thiocyanate yields two complexes Co( L)( HL)(N-3)]center dot ClO4 ( 1) and Co( L)( HL)(NCS)] center dot ClO4 ( 2); both being characterized by different physicochemical methods. Crystal structure of 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction while that of 2 was reported earlier. In 1, the central cobalt(III) adopts slightly distorted octahedral geometry with same donor set to that of 2. Catalytic efficacy of the complexes towards epoxidation of different alkenes under aerobic condition were investigated in homogeneous medium which reveals that 1 is better catalyst than 2 with respect to alkene oxidation, reflected from the turn over frequencies (TOF) measured at an optimum temperature of 60 degrees C in acetonitrile.
