A comparison of the performance of modern screen-film and digital mammography systems.

This work compares the detector performance and image quality of the new Kodak Min-R EV mammography screen-film system with the Fuji CR Profect detector and with other current mammography screen-film systems from Agfa, Fuji and Kodak. Basic image quality parameters (MTF, NPS, NEQ and DQE) were evaluated for a 28 kV Mo/Mo (HVL = 0.646 mm Al) beam using different mAs exposure settings. Compared with other screen-film systems, the new Kodak Min-R EV detector has the highest contrast and a low intrinsic noise level, giving better NEQ and DQE results, especially at high optical density. Thus, the properties of the new mammography film approach those of a fine mammography detector, especially at low frequency range. Screen-film systems provide the best resolution. The presampling MTF of the digital detector has a value of 15% at the Nyquist frequency and, due to the spread size of the laser beam, the use of a smaller pixel size would not permit a significant improvement of the detector resolution. The dual collection reading technology increases significantly the low frequency DQE of the Fuji CR system that can at present compete with the most efficient mammography screen-film systems.

Informação digital no ensino presencial e no ensino a distância

Neste artigo, discutem-se o papel da informação digital e sua importância tanto para as universidades tradicionais quanto para as que adotam o paradigma de ensino a distância. Além disso, descreve-se a infra-estrutura básica necessária para a produção e disponibilização de acervo digital, destacando-se a criação de um Núcleo de Construção e Manutenção de Acervo Digital e de um Núcleo de Criação de Material Didático. Analisam-se também as diferenças relacionadas à disponibilização e pagamento de direitos autorais de documentos digitais disponibilizados em ambientes públicos ou restritos. Finalmente, apresentam-se as experiências dos autores no gerenciamento da informação digital disponibilizada aos alunos do ensino presencial.

Biblioteca digital: a experiência do Impa

Relato da experiência do Impa na informatização de sua biblioteca, utilizando o software Horizon, e na construção de um servidor de preprints (dissertações de mestrado, teses de doutorado e artigos ainda não publicados) através da participação no projeto internacional Math-Net.

Technology and research in a global Networked University Digital Library (NUDL)

Digital Libraries (DLs) are extremely complex information systems that support the creation, management, distribution, and preservation of complex information resources, while allowing effective and efficient interaction among the several societies that benefit from DL content and services. In this paper, we focus on our experience facing challenges of building, maintaining, and developing the Networked University Digital Library (www.nudl.org), an extension of the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (www.ndltd.org). NUDL is a worldwide initiative that addresses making the intellectual property produced in universities more accessible, stimulating international collaboration across all disciplines. We detail technological aspects of our solutions and research activities carried out to provide powerful and enriched services for the communities served by this initiative.

Integração e interoperabilidade no acesso a recursos informacionais eletrônicos em C&T: a proposta da Biblioteca Digital Brasileira

Descreve as opções tecnológicas e metodológicas para atingir a interoperabilidade no acesso a recursos informacionais eletrônicos, disponíveis na Internet, no âmbito do projeto da Biblioteca Digital Brasileira em Ciência e Tecnologia, desenvolvido pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia (IBICT). Destaca o impacto da Internet sobre as formas de publicação e comunicação em C&T e sobre os sistemas de informação e bibliotecas. São explicitados os objetivos do projeto da BDB de fomentar mecanismos de publicação pela comunidade brasileira de C&T, de textos completos diretamente na Internet, sob a forma teses, artigos de periódicos, trabalhos em congressos, literatura "cinzenta", ampliando sua visibilidade e acessibilidade nacional e internacional, e também de possibilitar a interoperabilidade entre estes recursos informacionais brasileiros em C&T, heterogêneos e distribuídos, através de acesso unificado via um portal, sem a necessidade de o usuário navegar e consultar cada recurso individualmente.

A Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da Universidade de São Paulo

Apresentação dos aspectos principais da Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da Universidade de São Paulo (USP): o processo de desenvolvimento adotado para a implementação do site, a tecnologia utilizada, a arquitetura e a funcionalidade. Discussão sobre a Biblioteca Digital no processo de pós-graduação da USP. Relato das várias decisões não-técnicas adotadas ao longo do projeto, que tiveram grande impacto no resultado final.

A model of multilingual digital library

This paper addresses the problem of multilingual digital libraries. The motivation for a such a digital library comes from the diversity of languages of the Internet users as well as the diversity of content authors, from e-book authors to writers of courseware. The basic definitions of such a system, the specifications of its functionality and the identification of the items it holds are discussed. The impact of multilinguism in each of the former aspects is presented. A case study of a multilingual digital library - in the Maxwell System in PUC-Rio - is described in the last sections. Its main characteristics are described and the current status of its digital library is shown.

Working in a digital world: new leadership practices for the development of a digital library workforce

Digital library developments are part of a global move in many sectors of society toward virtual work and electronic services made possible by the advances in information technology. This environment requires new attitudes and skills in the workforce and therefore leaders who understand the global changes underlying the new information economy and how to lead and develop such a workforce. This article explores ways to develop human resources and stimulate creativity to capitalize on the immense potential of digital libraries to educate and empower social change. There is a shortage of technically skilled workers and even more so of innovators. Retention and recruitment is one of the greatest obstacles to developing digital library services and information products.

Arquivos abertos: subprojeto da Biblioteca Digital Brasileira

Após breve histórico sobre esta mecânica da comunicação científica, relatamos as experiências realizadas junto a comunidade científica da genética e os futuros empreendimentos pretendidos pelo IBICT.

A acessibilidade à informação no espaço digital

O trabalho aborda aspectos referentes à acessibilidade no espaço digital. Uma ênfase especial é dada às situações relacionadas à interação das pessoas portadoras de deficiência com a informação, em ambientes de bibliotecas. O texto propõe algumas adequações para a acessibilidade ao espaço digital, conforme categorias de usuários, com o intuito de contribuir para um maior nível de acessibilidade à informação, nesse espaço.

France's Charter for the Environment : of Presidents, Principles and Environmental Protection

France amended its constitution in 2005 to include a Charter for the Environment. The Charter lays out France's commitment to supporting the right to a 'balanced environment'. This article first traces the Charter's origins to a legacy-building presidential initiative. Jacques Chirac decided to invest in a neglected policy domain in which his own majority had shown little interest. He was obliged to intervene repeatedly in order to bring this project to a successful conclusion. In doing so, he staked out environmental affairs as an area of potential presidential supremacy. Next, the content of the Charter is examined. In this document, French traditions of universalism come together with an international movement for anticipatory environmental protection. This is reflected in the constitutionalisation of the precautionary principle, which emerged as the most controversial part of the Charter. The debates this provoked tended to caricature a risk-management principle whose meaning has been carefully refined to forestall objections. Finally, the Charter's potential efficacy is analysed. The post-Charter record of legislative and judicial activity concerning the environment is meagre, but not wholly inauspicious.
