Length-weight relationship and relative condition factor in Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters) of Bhima River

Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters), a common freshwater fish of Bhima river, has high economic value and considerable fishery importance. The length-weight relationship in the logarithmic way for this fish can be written as: Log W = - 4.50241627 + 2.884822741 log L. This is close to the cubic law indicating the isometric growth of the fish in its natural habitat. The correlation coefficient (r) was found to be 0.9865 which showed a good relationship between the two parameters. The mean relative condition factor (K sub(n)) was 1.00 suggesting the well-being of the fish.

Length-weight relationship and condition factor of Perna viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) and Meretrix meretrix (Linnaeus, 1758) from Mumbai waters

Length weight relationship of the two commercially important molluscs P. viridis and M. meretrix was found to be W=-0.40263L super(2.044719) & W=-0.04359L super(2.2315498) respectively. Condition factor was recorded to be less than 1.0 for most part of the year in P. viridis and for M. meretrix it ranged from 0.39 to 4.61. The present study reveals that there was allometric growth in both the species and the growth was not satisfactory since it showed lower K-value during most part of the year.

Diesel Cylinder Charge Properties: Feed-Forward Control and Cycle-by-Cycle Analysis Using an In-Cylinder Gas Sampling System

Common-rail fuel injection systems on modern light duty diesel engines are effectively able to respond instantaneously to changes in the demanded injection quantity. In contrast, the air-system is subject to significantly slower dynamics, primarily due to filling/emptying effects in the manifolds and turbocharger inertia. The behaviour of the air-path in a diesel engine is therefore the main limiting factor in terms of engine-out emissions during transient operation. This paper presents a simple mean-value model for the air-path during throttled operation, which is used to design a feed-forward controller that delivers very rapid changes in the in-cylinder charge properties. The feed-forward control action is validated using a state-of-the-art sampling system that allows true cycle-by-cycle measurement of the in-cylinder CO2 concentration. © 2011 SAE International.

Redesigning the design process through interactive simulation: A case study of life-cycle engineering in jet engine conceptual design

Many aerospace companies are currently making the transition to providing fully-integrated product-service offerings in which their products are designed from the outset with life-cycle considerations in mind. Based on a case study at Rolls-Royce, Civil Aerospace, this paper demonstrates how an interactive approach to process simulation can be used to support the redesign of existing design processes in order to incorporate life-cycle engineering (LCE) considerations. The case study provides insights into the problems of redesigning the conceptual stages of a complex, concurrent engineering design process and the practical value of process simulation as a tool to support the specification of process changes in the context of engineering design. The paper also illustrates how development of a simulation model can provide significant benefit to companies through the understanding of process behaviour that is gained through validating the behaviour of the model using different design and iteration scenarios. Height-length relation of shells in the Indian backwater oyster Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) of the Cochin harbour

Height-length relationship in Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) showed an exponential trend and relation in the form, H=ALᴮ. Deviations of actual values from the mean values consequent to the increase in size were noticed. Height and length approximated in oysters of less than 3.5cm in height resulting in orbicular shape. In oyster of shell height 3.5cm to 8cm, increase in height is faster leading to an oval shape. Above 8cm in height, the oysters become further elongated. Height-length relation is non-linear with an index (B value) of 1.1156. A linear relationship also holds good as the B value is not very much different from unity (H=-2.5424+2.0036L).

On the eye diameter-total length relationship of the Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier)

Results of studies of chemical, bacteriological and organoleptic quality of cured fish collected from four major curing centres along the Tamil Nadu coast are reported. Only 32.43% of the samples had moisture level below 35%, 0.9% had salt 25% and above. None of the samples showed acid insoluble ash below 1.5%. The main defects were unhygienic processing, inadequate salting, use of poor quality salt and incomplete drying. Recommendations for improvement of quality are given.

Length-weight and tail length-total length relationship in Panulirus homarus Linnaeus on the south-west coast of India

Length-weight relationships of Panulirus homarus caught from the Kanniyakumari coast was found to be W=0.000566 L super(2-50). The relationship between tail length and total length was also investigated and compared with that of Panulirus polyphagus. Same relationship did not hold good for the two sexes as in the case of P. polyphagus. For a given tail length, the head length, the total length and the weight appear to be relatively larger for females of small sizes of P. homarus.
