'Greek' and 'Roman' in Latin Medical Texts. Studies in Cultural Change and Exchange in Ancient Medicine : [Proceedings of the 10th International Conference "Ancient Latin Medical Texts", Lausanne, 2010, November 3rd-6th November]

Latin medical texts transmit medical theories and practices that originated mainly in Greece. This interaction took place through juxtaposition, assimilation and transformation of ideas. 'Greek' and 'Roman' in Latin Medical Texts studies the ways in which this cultural interaction influenced the development of the medical profession and the growth of knowledge of human and animal bodies, and especially how it provided the foundations for innovations in the areas of anatomy, pathology and pharmacology, from the earliest Latin medical texts until well into the medieval world.

Militarism and Melodrama: The Cultural Work of Combat Death

This essay examines the role of melodrama in the American war film, focusing on three post-WWII examples. The main argument centers on the natural alliance between melodrama and militarism based on a shared intolerance for the notion of death as meaningless and in vain. Both melodrama and military ideology employ elaborate rhetorical and narrative strategies to enfold deaths into larger systems of meaning, such as the nation, or in more personal terms, as a rite of passage. One of the most common narrative devices present in the military melodrama is the death that converts survivors to the values of the virtuous victim. The essay examines the shared conventions and different strategies of the following three films: Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), Platoon (1986), and Top Gun (1986).

The effect of COX-2 inhibitors on the formation of heterotopic bone in a rat model : O1323

Aims: 1) to create a new and reproducible animal model to produce heterotopic ossification (HO) 2) to be able to exactly quantify the amount of HO using a microCT scan and 3) to prove the hypothesis that COX-2 inhibitors are efficacious in the prevention of HO. Methods: We developed a IACUC-approved Lewis rat model, in which the ventral side of the right femur was scraped to mechanically disrupt the periosteum. By clamping the vastus intermedius ischemic injury to the muscle was produced to enhance HO. Finally homologous bone marrow from a donor rat was placed on the anterior surface of the femur. Half of the study group (8 rats) received chow mixed with a COX-2 inhibitor, while the other half received normal chow. After 6 weeks the animals were sacrificed, the femurs removed and imaged by microCT. Grading of HO was based on the thickness of ectopic bone as evaluated in a blinded fashion by 3 independent observers. Results: All animals developed bilateral HO. Rats treated with COX-2 inhibitors developed significantly less ectopic bone than the control group rats. Conclusions: The results suggest that we have created a very reliable, reproducible model to form ectopic bone in rats. Using the microCT we can precisely quantify the amount of HO. We have been able to show that COX-2 inhibitors significantly decrease the amount of HO formation and are thus a good alternative to non-specific NSAIDs with their potential serious side effects on the gastrointestinal tract and on hemo-stastis.

En aquesta ruta, acabaran entrant doncs, tant elpatrimoni inventariable, com el patrimoni intangible, sempre i quan tinguin unasingularitat que la facin atractiva i interessant per al visitant. El que es vol és que aquestprojecte sigui una alternativa real a les diferents rutes que es presenten al municipi deLlançà

The NK cell receptor repertoire: formation, adaptation and exploitation.

The identification of NK cell receptors specific for MHC class I molecules has greatly improved our knowledge of NK cell reactivity and specificity. Inhibitory receptors prevent NK cell activation directed against cells expressing self-MHC class I molecules. Consequently, diseased cells that do not express self-MHC class I molecules become susceptible to NK cell-mediated attack. Because of the specificity and distribution of inhibitory NK cell receptors, cells that express non-self (allogeneic) MHC class I molecules are also susceptible to NK cell reactions. This feature has been exploited in a clinical setting to treat leukemia patients.

Human pregnane X receptor is expressed in breast carcinomas, potential heterodimers formation between hPXR and RXR-alpha.

BACKGROUND The human pregnane X receptor (hPXR) is an orphan nuclear receptor that induces transcription of response elements present in steroid-inducible cytochrome P-450 gene promoters. This activation requires the participation of retinoid X receptors (RXRs), needed partners of hPXR to form heterodimers. We have investigated the expression of hPXR and RXRs in normal, premalignant, and malignant breast tissues, in order to determine whether their expression profile in localized infiltrative breast cancer is associated with an increased risk of recurrent disease. METHODS Breast samples from 99 patients including benign breast diseases, in situ and infiltrative carcinomas were processed for immunohistochemistry and Western-blot analysis. RESULTS Cancer cells from patients that developed recurrent disease showed a high cytoplasmic location of both hPXR isoforms. Only the infiltrative carcinomas that relapsed before 48 months showed nuclear location of hPXR isoform 2. This location was associated with the nuclear immunoexpression of RXR-alpha. CONCLUSION Breast cancer cells can express both variants 1 and 2 of hPXR. Infiltrative carcinomas that recurred showed a nuclear location of both hPXR and RXR-alpha; therefore, the overexpression and the subcellular location changes of hPXR could be considered as a potential new prognostic indicator.

Ser jove als marges de la cultura: com es relacionen els joves amb l’entorn social i cultural a través d’expressions plàstiques d’art al carrer

En el procés de ser jove hi ha implícites dinàmiques de socialització i de relació. Tot i ser un procés habitual, no deixa de sorprendre la incorporació, a través de l’acció dels joves, de nous valors i nous referents en els constructes culturals ja establerts, que, en termes molt generals, identifiquen fins aquest moment els que en podríem dir la massa adulta. L’article es basa en un treball empíric fet a la ciutat de Tarragona, combinant les opinions directes de 21 joves creadors, l’observació dels carrers (especialment dels graffitis i instal•lacions plàstiques que hi podem trobar) i l’anàlisi de fonts bibliogràfiques i documentals amb les que es planteja els referents teòrics i contextuals

Granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor enhances the modulatory effect of cytokines on monocyte-derived multinucleated giant cell formation and fungicidal activity against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis

Multinucleated giant cells (MGC) are cells present in characteristic granulomatous inflammation induced by intracellular infectious agents or foreign materials. The present study evaluated the modulatory effect of granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in association with other cytokines such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin (IL)-10 or transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β1) on the formation of MGC from human peripheral blood monocytes stimulated with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis antigen (PbAg). The generation of MGC was determined by fusion index (FI) and the fungicidal activity of these cells was evaluated after 4 h of MGC co-cultured with viable yeast cells of P. brasiliensis strain 18 (Pb18). The results showed that monocytes incubated with PbAg and GM-CSF plus IFN-γ had a significantly higher FI than in all the other cultures, while the addition of IL-10 or TGF-β1 had a suppressive effect on MGC generation. Monocytes incubated with both pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines had a higher induction of foreign body-type MGC rather than Langhans-type MGC. MGC stimulated with PbAg and GM-CSF in association with the other cytokines had increased fungicidal activity and the presence of GM-CSF also partially inhibited the suppressive effects of IL-10 and TGF-β1. Together, these results suggest that GM-CSF is a positive modulator of PbAg-stimulated MGC generation and on the fungicidal activity against Pb18.

Pla de difusió del Patrimoni Cultural de Pineda de Mar. Tot el que hi ha i no veus

Les idees que han portat a realitzar aquest projecte són les següents: posar en valor i donar a conèixer la realitat patrimonial que té Pineda de Mar, conèixer i documentar el patrimoni cultural de Pineda, actualitzar l’inventari d’elements declarats al municipi, oferir a la ciutat la possibilitat de tenir un turisme cultural, no només un turisme de sol i platja, ser un projecte útil i factible per a l’ajuntament del municipi.Aquestes idees o raons han estat el rerefons per a encaminar i decidir el projecte final de difusió que es presenta en aquest treball.

An unexpected role of semaphorin3a-neuropilin-1 signaling in lymphatic vessel maturation and valve formation.

RATIONALE: Lymphatic vasculature plays important roles in tissue fluid homeostasis maintenance and in the pathology of human diseases. Yet, the molecular mechanisms that control lymphatic vessel maturation remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the gene expression profiles of ex vivo isolated lymphatic endothelial cells to identify novel lymphatic vessel expressed genes and we investigated the role of semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) and neuropilin-1 (Nrp-1) in lymphatic vessel maturation and function. METHODS AND RESULTS: Lymphatic and blood vascular endothelial cells from mouse intestine were isolated using fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and transcriptional profiling was performed. We found that the axonal guidance molecules Sema3A and Sema3D were highly expressed by lymphatic vessels. Importantly, we found that the semaphorin receptor Nrp-1 is expressed on the perivascular cells of the collecting lymphatic vessels. Treatment of mice in utero (E12.5-E16.5) with an antibody that blocks Sema3A binding to Nrp-1 but not with an antibody that blocks VEGF-A binding to Nrp-1 resulted in a complex phenotype of impaired lymphatic vessel function, enhanced perivascular cell coverage, and abnormal lymphatic vessel and valve morphology. CONCLUSIONS: Together, these results reveal an unanticipated role of Sema3A-Nrp-1 signaling in the maturation of the lymphatic vascular network likely via regulating the perivascular cell coverage of the vessels thus affecting lymphatic vessel function and lymphatic valve development.

The 16PF5 and the NEO-PI-R in Spanish and Swiss samples: A cross-cultural comparison

This study compared the Spanish (Castilian) and French versions of the 16PF5 and of the NEO-PI-R in Spanish and Swiss samples. The five-factor solution for the 16PF5 only seems clear for the Castilian version, but not for the French version. Indeed, the congruence coefficients for the Tough-Mindedness and the Self-Control dimensions are low. On the other hand, the five-factor solutions are highly similar for both countries concerning the NEO-PI-R, and the congruence coefficients are above .95 for all five dimensions. The low cross-cultural replicability for the 16PF5 makes it difficult to analyze the differences at the mean level for this inventory. For the NEO-PI-R, the differences are generally very small and globally account for 2.6% of the total variance. Spaniards seem to have slightly lower scores on Actions and slightly higher scores on Dutifulness. These differences could either be due to translation problems, sample selection, or cultural differences.
