Since the Seventies, there has been a growing degradation of concrete structures in Brazil. For that reason, much research has been made on the durability of those structures, aiming at contributing towards quality improvement and reduction of maintenance and repair costs. This study evaluates the behavior of the durability of high-performance concrete with additions, replacing part of the cement and aggregates with rice husk ash and tire rubber, respectively. Durability tests were carried out in which concrete was subjected to several degradation processes, such as the action of water, temperature, salts and acid solution. The results indicated that the addition of active silica or rice husk ash, both with tire rubber did not worsen the durability of concrete. In fact, rubber proved to be very effective in preventing the action of chemical agents, high temperatures and the penetration of water. Rice husk ash, despite the larger diameter of particles, had similar results to that of the active silica.

The interest in the use of vegetable fibers (e.g. jute, sisal and curaua) for more noble applications, such as reinforcement in polymeric composite materials, has increased over the years due to a variety of aspects, especially those related to environmental legislation and community awareness regarding the life cycle of products. In this context, the aim of this work is to develop hybrid interlaminate curaua/glass/insaturated polyester composites by hot compression molding and to analyze their mechanical properties as a function of the thickness of the laminate. The short beam strength of the thickest sample decreased due to its higher void content. Furthermore, the thinnest sample showed lower hardness, and lower impact, tensile and Iosipescu shear strength, partly attributed to its lower fiber volumetric fraction. Thus, in general, the most adequate laminate was the one comprising eight layers, four of which were of glass fiber and four of curaua fiber, but only if flexural loading is not critical.

Lithium ion conducting polymer electrolytes based on polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA-OH) complexed with salt Li2SO4 and different weight percent ratios of PEG(400) plasticizer have been prepared by solution cast technique using deionized water as solvent. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the thermal stability of the materials depended on the plasticizer content. The FTIR study confirmed the polymer salt complex formation. The modulus spectra indicated the non-Debye nature of the material; a dominant relaxation process is visible being associated with the dynamic glass transition, relaxation-a. The maximum of each peak is shifted to higher frequencies as the plasticizer increases due to an enhancement of dipolar mobility in the origin of cooperative motions. A power law frequency dependence of the real part of the electrical conductivity is observed, which is characteristic of the effects of ion-ion and/or ion-chain correlations in ion motion. This variation is well fitted to a Jonscher's expression.
