The present work describes a more efficient methodology for the chlorination of water containing disperse dyes, where the chlorinated byproducts identified by mass spectra are compared. this investigation, we tested the degradation of Cl Disperse Blue 291 dye, 2-[(2-Bromo-4,6-dinitrophenyl)azo]-5-(diethylamino)-4-methoxyacetanilide) a commercial azo dye with mutagenic properties. The present work evaluates the photoelectrocatalytic efficiency of removing the Cl Disperse Blue 291 dye from a wastewater of the textile industry. We employed NaCl as a supporting electrolyte. It should be noted that photoelectrocatalytic techniques are non-conventional method of generating chlorine radicals. The by-products formed in this process were analyzed using spectrophotometry, liquid chromatography, dissolved organic carbon, mass spectral analysis and mutagenicity assays. The process efficiency was compared with the conventional chlorination process adopted during sewage and effluents treatment processes. This conventional chlorination process is less efficient in removing color, total organic carbon than the photoelectrochemistry technique. Furthermore, we shall demonstrate that the mutagenicity of the generated by-products obtained using photoelectrocatalysis is completely different from that obtained by the conventional oxidation of chloride ions in the drinking wafer treatment process. Two Aedes aegypti (L.) populations were studied in the laboratory regarding the preference for three types of breeding sites, i.e., flasks containing only water, flasks with a plant and flasks with a stick. Each of these breeding units was placed in one cage and the choice of the oviposition sites was determined for individual females and three females per experimental unit at two humidity levels. Preference for ovipositing on the water surface was observed and varied according to experimental unit and humidity. Mean hatching of eggs in water surface was 46.6%. Experiments with three females showed a more marked difference than when only one female was used. Inter and intrapopulation variability regarding oviposition sites was observed. The discrimination between the different oviposition substrates, hatching in water surface and its implication for mosquito control are discussed.

The objective of the present study was to standardize the analysis of zinc binding on human red blood cell (RBC) membranes in 20 normal adults. The displacement studies revealed that at the maximal stable zinc concentration tested (600 muM), 57% (mean) of the bound Zn-65 was displaced and to displace half maximal Zn-65, the stable zinc concentration was 300 muM. Scatchard plots revealed two classes of binding sites for zinc on RBC membranes: one with higher affinity, Kd = 1.20 x 10(-5) M (site I), and the other with lower affinity, Kd = 2.77 x 10(-4) M (site II). Binding sites occupancy was 97% means and 58.5% means for sites I and 11, respectively. The displacement was affected by temperature, membrane protein concentration, freezing, thawing, and dialysis. Other metal cations, including Co++, Fe++, and Mn++, had very little effect on Zn-65 displacement, in contrast copper displaced Zn-65 from its binding sites on RBC membranes. Zinc binding to RBC membranes was rapid and readily reversible in a dynamic equilibrium with its binding sites. It is anticipated that this method will be applicable to studies of a wide variety of diseases specifically related to zinc metabolism in humans as well as in animals. (C) 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The compounds [Fe(ch)(CO)(2)PP3] (1) (ch = chalcone) and [Fe(sba)(CO)(2)PPh3] (2) (sba = sorbic acid) were prepared by irradiating the tetracarbonyltriphenylphosphineiron(0) complex in benzene in the presence of ch or sba. The compounds were characterized by infrared and P-31 NMR spectroscopies. Their electrochemical behavior was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and the results suggest that their oxidations occur by more than one electrochemical step, producing free ch and sba, free PPh3 and solvated Fe(III). It was observed that sba ligand contributes more effectively to the stabilization of metal center in these complexes, the X-ray crystal and molecular structures of 1 and 2 were determined; it was shown that the Fe atom adopts a distorted octahedral coordinated geometry in which three of the sites are occupied by the ch or sba ligand. The [Fe(ch)(CO)(2)PPh3] complex is a monomer and the unit cell of complex 2 contains exist two identical and crystallographically independent molecules of [Fe(sba)(CO)(2)PPh3] which are linked by short hydrogen bonds O-H . . .O (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier B.V. The frequency of adenine mononucleotides (A), dinucleotides (AA) and clusters, and the positions of clusters, were studied in 502 molecules of the 5S rRNA.All frequencies were reduced in the evolutive lines of vertebrates, plants and fungi, in parallel with increasing organismic complexity. No change was observed in invertebrates. All frequencies were increased in mitochondria, plastids and mycoplasmas. The presumed relatives to the ancestors of the organelles, Rhodobacteria alfa and Cyanobacteria, showed intermediate values, relative to the eubacterial averages. Firmibacterid showed very high number of cluster sites.Clusters were more frequent in single-stranded regions in all organisms. The routes of organelles and mycoplasmas accummulated clusters at faster rates in double-stranded regions. Rates of change were higher for AA and clusters than for A in plants, vertebrates and organeltes, higher for cluster sites and A in mycoplasmas, and higher for AA and A in fungi. These data indicated that selection pressures acted more strongly on adenine clustering than on adenine frequency. It is proposed that AA and clusters, as sites of lower informational content. have the property of tolerating positional variation in the sites of other molecules (or other regions of the same molecule) that interact with the adenines. This reasoning was consistent with the degrees of genic polymorphism. low in plants and vertebrates and high in invertebrates. In the eubacteria endosymbiontic or parasitic to eukaryotes, the more tolerant RNA would be better adapted to interactions with the homologous nucleus-derived ribosomal proteins: the intermediate values observed in their precursors were interpreted as preadaptive.Among other groups, only the Deinococcus-Thermus eubacteria showed excessive AA and cluster contents, possibly related to their peculiar tolerance to mutagens, and the Ciliates showed excessive AA contents, indicative of retention of primitive characters.

This study reports the photodegradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in aqueous solution by the photo-Fenton process using solar irradiation. The influence of solution path length, and Fe(NO3)(3) and H2O2 concentrations on the degradation of 4-CP is evaluated by response surface methodology. The degradation process was monitored by the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and the release of chloride ion. The results showed a very important role of iron concentration either for TOC removal or dechlorination. on the other hand, a negative effect of increasing solution path length on mineralization was observed, which can be compensated by increasing the iron concentration. This permits an adjustment of the iron concentration according to the irradiation exposure area and path length (depth of a tank reactor). Under optimum conditions of 1.5 mM Fe(NO3)(3), 20.0 mM H2O2 and 4.5 cm solution path length, 17 min irradiation under solar light were sufficient to reduce a 72 mg C L-1 solution of 4-CP by 91 (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The red Fe2+-phenanthroline complex is the basis of a classical spectrophotometric method for determination of iron. Due to the toxicity of this complexing agent, direct disposal of the wastewaters generated in analytical laboratories is not environmentally safe. This work evaluates the use of the solar photo-Fenton process for the treatment of laboratory wastewaters containing phenanthroline. Firstly, the degradation of phenanthroline in water was evaluated at two concentration levels (0.1 and 0.01%, w/v) and the efficiencies of degradation using ferrioxalate (FeOx) and ferric nitrate were compared. The 0.01% w/v solution presented much higher mineralization, achieving 82% after 30 min of solar irradiation with both iron sources. The solar photo-Fenton treatment of laboratory wastewater containing, in addition to phenanthroline, other organic compounds such as herbicides and 4-chlorophenol, equivalent to 4500 mg L-1 total organic carbon (TOC) resulted in total degradation of phenanthroline and 25% TOC removal after 150 min, in the presence of either FeOx or ferric nitrate. A ratio of 1: 10 dilution of the residue increased mineralization in the presence of ferrioxalate, achieving 38% TOC removal after 120 min, while use of ferric nitrate resulted in only 6% mineralization over the same period. The ability of the conotoxin p-TIA, a 19-amino acid peptide isolated from the marine snail Conus tulipa, to antagonize contractions induced by noradrenaline through activation of alpha(1A)-adrenoceptors in rat vas deferens, alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors in rat spleen and alpha(ID)-adrenoceptors in rat aorta, and to inhibit the binding of [I-125]HEAT (2-[[beta-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]aminomethyl]-1-tetralone) to membranes of human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells expressing each of the recombinant rat alpha(1)-adrenoceptors was investigated. p-TIA (100 nM to 1 muM) antagonized the contractions of vas deferens and aorta in response to noradrenaline without affecting maximal effects and with similar potencies (pA(2)similar to7.2, n=4). This suggests that p-TIA is a competitive antagonist of alpha(1A)- and alpha(1D)-adrenoceptors with no selectivity between these subtypes. Incubation of p-TIA (30 to 300 nM) with rat spleen caused a significant reduction of the maximal response to noradrenaline, suggesting that p-TIA is a non-competitive antagonist at alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors. After receptor inactivation with phenoxybenzamine, the potency of p-TIA in inhibiting contractions was examined with similar occupancies (similar to25%) at each subtype. Its potency (pIC(50)) was 12 times higher in spleen (8.3 +/- 0.1, n=4) than in vas deferens (7.2 +/- 0.1, n=4) or aorta (7.2 0.1, n=4). In radioligand binding assays, p-TIA decreased the number of binding sites (B,,,,,,) in membranes from HEK293 cells expressing the rat alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors without affecting affinity (K-D), In contrast, in HEK293 cells expressing rat alpha(1A)- or alpha(1D)-adrenoceptors, p-TTA decreased the KD without affecting the B-max. It is concluded that p-TIA will be useful for distinguishing the role of particular alpha(1)-adrenoceptor subtypes in native tissues. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The interaction between metaphosphate chains and the metal ions Ca2+ and Eu3+ has been studied in water by Eu3+ luminescence, infrared absorption, and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. Two main families of sites could be identified for the metal ions in the aqueous polyphosphate colloidal systems: (1) cagelike sites provided by the polyphosphate chain and (2) a family which arises following saturation of cagelike sites. Occupation of this second family leads to supramolecular interactions between polyphosphate chains and the consequent destabilization of the colloidal system. In the polyphosphate-Ca2+ system, this destabilization appears as a coacervation process. Equilibrium existing between colloidal species as a function of the compositions could be reasoned based on the spectroscopic measurements. The determination of coordination numbers and the correlation of the results with the observation of coacervates show that Eu3+ luminescence properties can be used to probe in a unique way the coacervation process.

Expression of estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) receptors has traditionally been associated with hormone-responsive organs, such as breast, ovary, and endometrium, and carcinomas arising therefrom. More recently, examples of ''unexpected'' ER or PR expression have been reported, particularly in tumors of endocrine tissues, such as thyroid and pancreatic islet cells. We tested the hypothesis that neuroendocrine tumors of various primary and metastatic sites might also express ER or PR or both by performing a retrospective immunohistochemical study in a series of 59 formalin- or mechacarn-fixed neuroendocrine carcinomas of various sites, including lung, skin, gastrointestinal and female genital tracts, and including carcinoid and atypical carcinoid tumors, small cell carcinomas, and Merkel cell carcinomas. We employed the anti-ER monoclonal antibody 1D5 and the anti-PR monoclonal antibody PgR1A6 using standard immunohistochemical techniques after microwave-based heat-induced epitope retrieval. Two of 28 carcinoid tumors demonstrated ER positivity; six of 30 cases were positive for progesterone receptor only. In addition, PR expression was found in one of two cases of atypical carcinoid, in five of 25 cases of small cell carcinoma, and in one of two cases of Merkel cell carcinoma. None of the atypical carcinoids, small cell carcinomas, or Merkel cell carcinomas were ER positive. In most cases, the fraction of tumor cell nuclei that were positive was <50%. These studies add the spectrum of neuroendocrine tumors that can express these hormone receptors. Similar to the pattern previously described in the subsets of meningiomas and islet cell tumors, PR but not ER is detectable in most cases. These results underscore the caution that should be exercised in determining tissue origin of metastatic carcinomas based only on detection of hormone receptors by immunohistochemistry.

We report on the use of dynamic scale theory and fractal analyses in the Study of distinct growth stages of layer-by-layer (LBL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and a side-chain-substituted azobenzene copolymer (Ma-co-DR13). The LBL films were adsorbed oil glass substrates and characterized with atomic force microscopy with the Ma-co-DR13 at the top layer. The ganular morphology exhibited by the films allowed the observation of the growth process inside and outside the grains. The growth outside the grains was found to follow the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model, with fractal dimensions of ca. 2.6. One could expect that inside the grains the morphology would be close to a Euclidian surface with fractal dimension of ca. 2 for any growth stage. The latter, however, was observed only for thicker films containing more than 10 bilayers. For thinner films the morphology was well described by a self-affine fractal. Such dependence of the growth behavior with the film thickness is associated with a more complete coverage of adsorption sites in thicker films due to diffusion of polymer molecules. The present paper quantifies and develops the kinetic aspects involved in the mechanism of interplay between electron and ions presented elsewhere(1) for KhFek[Fe(CN)(6)](l)center dot mH(2)O (Prussian Blue) host materials. Accordingly, there are three different electrochemical processes involved in the PB host materials: H3O+, K+, and H+ insertion/extraction mechanisms which here were fully kinetically studied by means of the use of combined electronic and mass transfer functions as a tool to separate all the processes. The use of combined electronic and mass transfer functions was very important to validate and confirm the proposed mechanism. This mechanism allows the electrochemical and chemical processes involved in the KhFek[Fe(CN)(6)](l)center dot mH(2)O host and Prussian Blue derivatives to be understood. In addition, a formalism was also developed to consider superficial oxygen reduction. From the analysis of the kinetic processes involved in the model, it was possible to demonstrate that the processes associated with K+ and H+ exchanges are reversible whereas the H3O+ insertion process was shown not to present a reversible pattern. This irreversible pattern is very peculiar and was shown to be related to the catalytic proton reduction reaction. Furthermore, from the model, it was possible to calculate the number density of available sites for each intercalation/deintercalation processes and infer that they are very similar for K+ and H+. Hence, the high prominence of the K+ exchange observed in the voltammetric responses has a kinetic origin and is not related to the amount of sites available for intercalation/deintercalation of the ions.
