Results on the performance of a 25 cm(2) liquid-feed solid-polymer-electrolyte direct methanol fuel cell (SPE-DMFC), operating under near-ambient conditions, are reported. The SPE-DMFC can yield a maximum power density of c. 200 mW cm(-2) at 90 C while operating with 1 M aqueous methanol and oxygen under ambient pressure. While operating the SPE-DMFC under similar conditions with air, a maximum power density of ca. 100 mW cm(-2) is achieved. Analysis of the electrode reaction kinetics parameters on the methanol electrode suggests that the reaction mechanism for methanol oxidation remains invariant with temperature. Durability data on the SPE-DMFC at an operational current density of 100 mA cm(-2) have also been obtained.

Copper(II) complexes Cu(satp)(L)] (1-3) of a Schiff base thiolate (salicylidene-2-aminothiophenol, H(2)satP) and phenanthroline bases (L), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen in 1), dipyrido3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq in 2) and dipyrido3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz in 3), were prepared, characterized and their anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and hypoxic photocytotoxicity studied. The redox active complexes show the Cu(II)-Cu(I) couple near -0.5 V for 1 and near 0.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode) for 2 and 3. The one-electron paramagnetic complexes (similar to 1.85 mu(B)) are avid DNA binders giving K(b) values within 1.0 x 10(5) - 8.0 x 10(5) M(-1). Thermal melting and viscosity data along with molecular docking calculations suggest DNA groove and/or partial intercalative binding of the complexes. The complexes show anaerobic DNA cleavage activity in red light under argon via type-I pathway, while DNA photocleavage in air proceeds via hydroxyl radical pathway. The DFT (density functional theory) calculations reveal a thyil radical pathway for the anaerobic DNA photocleavage activity and suggest the possibility of generation of a transient copper(I) species due to bond breakage between the copper and sulfur to generate the thyil radical. An oxidation of the copper(I) species is likely by oxygen in an aerobic medium or by the buffer medium in an anaerobic condition. Complex 3 exhibits significant photocytotoxicity in HeLa cells (IC(50) = 8.3(+/- 1.0) mu M) in visible light, while showing lower dark toxicity (IC(50) = 17.2(+/- 1.0) mu M). A significant reduction in the dark toxicity is observed under hypoxic cellular conditions (IC(50) = 30.0(+/- 1.0) mu M in dark), while retaining its photocytotoxicity (IC(50) = 8.0(+/- 1.0) mu M). Electrochemical deposition of Ni-Pd alloy films of various compositions from bath solution containing ethylenediamine (EDA) was carried out to use as anode material for methanol oxidative fuel cell in H2SO4 medium. Electronic absorption spectrum of bath solution containing Ni2+ Pd2+ ions and EDA indicated the formation of a four coordinate square planar metal-ligand complex of both the metal ions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the deposited alloy films show an increase in Pd-Ni alloy lattice parameter with increase in Pd content, and indicate the substitution of Pd in the lattice. A nano/ultrafine kind of crystal growth was observed in the alloy film deposited at low current density (2.5 mA cm(-2)). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) studies on the successively sputtered films showed the presence of Ni and Pd in pure metallic states and the surface concentration ratio of Ni to Pd is less than bulk indicating the segregation of Pd on the surface. Electro-catalytic oxidation of methanol in H2SO4 medium is found to be promoted on Ni-Pd electrodeposits. The anodic peak current characteristics to oxidation reaction on Ni-Pd was found typically high when compared to pure nickel and the relative increase in surface area by alloying the Ni by Pd was found to be as much as 300 times. Efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells based on organic electron donor/organic electron acceptor junctions can be strongly improved when the transparent conductive Anode is coated with a Buffer Layer (ABL). Here, the effects of a metal (gold) or oxide (molybdenum oxide) ABL are reported, as a function of the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) of different electron donors. The results indicate that a good matching between the work function of the anode and the highest occupied molecular orbital of the donor material is the major factor limiting the hole transfer efficiency. Indeed, gold is efficient as ABL only when the HOMO of the organic donor is close to its work function Phi(Au). Therefore we show that the MoO(3) oxide has a wider field of application as ABL than gold. (C) 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier and highest energy density fuel. Water gas shift (WGS) reaction is an important reaction to generate hydrogen from steam reforming of CO. A new WGS catalyst, Ce(1-x)Ru(x)O(2-delta) (0 <= x <= 0.1) was prepared by hydrothermal method using melamine as a complexing agent. The Catalyst does not require any pre-treatment. Among the several compositions prepared and tested, Ce(0.95)Ru(0.05)O(2-delta) (5% Ru(4+) ion substituted in CeO(2)) showed very high WGS activity in terms of high conversion rate (20.5 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1) at 275 degrees C) and low activation energy (12.1 kcal/mol). Over 99% conversion of CO to CO(2) by H(2)O is observed with 100% H(2) selectivity at >= 275 degrees C. In presence of externally fed CO(2) and H(2) also, complete conversion of CO to CO(2) was observed with 100% H(2) selectivity in the temperature range of 305-385 degrees C. Catalyst does not deactivate in long duration on/off WGS reaction cycle due to absence of surface carbon and carbonate formation and sintering of Ru. Due to highly acidic nature of Ru(4+) ion, surface carbonate formation is also inhibited. Sintering of noble metal (Ru) is avoided in this catalyst because Ru remains in Ru(4+) ionic state in the Ce(1-x)Ru(x)O(2-delta) catalyst.

A modified solution combustion technique was successfully used to synthesize sub-10 nm crystallites of hybrid CeO(2)-Al(2)O(3)-CeAlO(3). The fuel in the solution combustion was tuned to obtain mixed oxides and solid solutions of the compound. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. XRD and TEM analysis showed the substitution of Al(3+) ions in the CeO(2) matrix when a combination of glycine, urea, hexamine and oxalyl dihydrazide was used as fuel for the synthesis. The compounds showed high activity for CO oxidation and the activity of the compounds was dependent upon the composition of the oxide.

Nanoclusters of Pt were electrochemically deposited on a conducting polymer, namely, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), which was also electrochemically deposited on carbon paper current collector. PEDOT facilitated uniform distribution of Pt nanoclusters, when compared with Pt electrodeposition on bare carbon paper substrate. Spectroscopy data indicated absence of any interaction between PEDOT and Pt. The electrochemically active surface area as measured from carbon monoxide adsorption followed by its oxidation was several times greater for Pt-PEDOT/C electrode in comparison with Pt/C electrode. The catalytic activity of Pt-PEDOT/C electrode for electrooxidation of formic acid was significantly greater than that of Pt/C electrode. Amperometry data suggested that the electrodes were stable for continuous oxidation of HCOOH.

Layered LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 crystallizing in R (3) over barm space group is synthesized by decomposing the constituent metal-nitrate precursors. Oxidizing nature of metal nitrates stabilizes nickel in +3 oxidation state, enabling a high degree of cation ordering in the layered LiNi0.8Co0.2O2. The powder sample characterized by XRD Rietveld refinement reveals <2% Li-Ni site exchange in the layers. Scanning electron microscopic studies on the as-synthesized LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 sample reflect well defined particles of cubic morphology with particle size ranging between 200 and 250 nm. Cyclic voltammograms suggest that LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 undergoes phase transformation on first charge with resultant phase being completely reversible in subsequent cycles. The first-charge-cycle phase transition is further supported by impedance spectroscopy that shows substantial reduction in resistance during initial de-intercalation. Galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles reflect a first-discharge capacity of 184 mAh g(-1) which is stabilized at 170 mAh g(-1) over 50 cycles.

Electrodes and the nature of their contact with organic materials play a crucial role in the realization of efficient optoelectronic components. Whether the injection (organic light-emitting diodes - OLEDs) or collection (organic photovoltaic cells - OPV cells) of carriers, contacts must be as efficient as possible. To do this, it is customary to refer to electrode surface treatment and/or using a buffer layer all things to optimize the contact. Efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells based on organic electron donor/organic electron acceptor junctions can be strongly improved when the transparent conductive anode is coated with a buffer layer (ABL). We show that an ultra-thin gold (0.5 nm) or a thin molybdenum oxide (3-5 nm) can be used as efficient ABL. However, the effects of these ABL depend on the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of different electron donors of the OPV cells. The results indicate that, in the case of metal ABL, a good matching between the work function of the anode and the highest occupied molecular orbital of the donor material is the major factor limiting the hole transfer efficiency. Indeed, gold is efficient as ABL only when the HOMO of the organic donor is close to its work function Phi(Au). MoO3 has a wider field of application as ABL than gold. The role of the oxide is not so clearly understood than that of Au, different models proposed to interpret the experimental results are discussed.

Polypyridyl platinum(II) complexes (1-5), viz., Pt(pyphen)Cl]Cl (1), Pt(pyphen)(C CFc)]Cl (2), Pt(pydppz)Cl]Cl (3), Pt(pydppz)(C CPh)]Cl (4) and Pt(pydppz)(C CFc)]Cl (5), where pyphen is 6-(2-pyridyl)-1,10-phenanthroline, pydppz is 6-(2-pyridyl)-dipyrido-3,2-a:2',3'-c]-phenazine, FcC CH is ferrocenyl acetylene and PhC CH is phenyl acetylene, were synthesized, characterized and their DNA binding and photocytotoxic properties studied. The complexes showed strong binding affinity to calf-thymus DNA giving K-app of similar to 10(6)-10(7) M-1. Complexes 4 and 5 showed dual mode of binding to ct-DNA. The pydppz complexes 3-5 having a photoactive phenazine moiety showed photocytotoxicity in HeLa and MCF-7 cells in UV-A light of 365 nm with apoptotic cell death as evidenced from the acridine orange/ethidium bromide dual staining and the FACS data. Ti0.97Pt0.032+O1.97 and Ti0.97Pt0.034+O2 have been synthesized by a solution combustion method using alanine and glycine as the fuels, respectively. Both crystallize in anatase TiO2 structure with 15 nm average crystallite size. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed Pt ions are in the 2+ state in Ti0.97Pt0.03O1.97 (alanine) and 4+ state in Ti0.97Pt0.03O2 (glycine). The rate of CO oxidation occurring over Ti0.97Pt0.032+O1.97 (0.76 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1)) is similar to 10, times more than that over Ti0.97Pt0.034+O2 at 60 degrees C (0.08 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1)). A large shift in 100% hydrocarbons conversion to lower temperature was observed for Pt2+ ion-substituted TiO2 relative 10 that for Pt4+ ion-substituted TiO2. After reoxidation of the reduced compound by H-2 as well as CO, Pt ions are stabilized in mixed valences, 2+ and 4+ states. The role of oxide ion vacancy has been demonstrated by CO oxidation and H-2 + O-2 recombination reactions in the presence and absence of O-2. We analyze the activated lattice oxygens upon substitution of Pt2+ and Pt4+ ions in TiO2, using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations with supercells of Ti31Pt1O63, Ti30Pt2O62, and Ti29Pt3O61 for Pt2+ ion substitution and Ti31Pt1O64, Ti30Pt2O62, and Ti29Pt3O61 for Pt4+ ion substitution in TiO2. We find that the local structure of Pt2+ ion has a distorted square planar geometry and that of Pt4+ ion has an octahedral geometry similar to that of Ti4+ ion in pure TiO2. The change in coordination of Pt2+ ion gives rise to weakly bonded oxygens, and these oxygens are involved in high rates of catalytic reaction. Thus, the high catalytic activity results from synergistic roles of Pt2+ ion and oxide ion vacancy and weakly bonded lattice oxygen.

SnS quantum dot solar cell is fabricated by Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) method. SnS layer is optimized by different SILAR cycles of deposition. The particle size increased with the increase in number of SILAR cycles. Cu2S coated FTO is used as counter electrode against the conventional Platinum electrode. On comparison with a cell having a counter electrodeelectrolyte combination of Platinum-Iodine, Cu2S-polysulfide combination is found to improve both the short circuit current and fill factor of the solar cell. A maximum efficiency of 0.54% is obtained with an open circuit voltage of 311 mV and short circuit current density of 4.86 mA/cm. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Copper(II) and copper(I) complexes of a newly designed and crystallographically characterized Schiff base (HL) derived from rhodamine hydrazide and cinnamaldehyde were isolated in pure form formulated as Cu(L)(NO3)] (L-Cu) (1) and Cu(HL)(CH3CN)(H2O)]ClO4 (HL-Cu) (2), and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic tools. Interestingly, complex 1 but not 2 offers red fluorescence in solution state, and eventually HL behaves as a Cu(II) ions selective FRET based fluorosensor in HEPES buffer (1 mM, acetonitrile-water: 1/5, v/v) at 25 degrees C at biological pH with almost no interference of other competitive ions. The dependency of the FRET process on the +2 oxidation state of copper has been nicely supported by exhaustive experimental studies comprising electronic, fluorimetric, NMR titration, and theoretical calculations. The sensing ability of HL has been evaluated by the LOD value towards Cu(II) ions (83.7 nM) and short responsive time (5-10 s). Even the discrimination of copper(I) and copper(II) has also been done using only UV-Vis spectroscopic study. The efficacy of this bio-friendly probe has been determined by employing HL to detect the intercellular distribution of Cu(II) ions in HeLa cells by developing image under fluorescence microscope.

Platinum(II) complexes Pt(pap)(an-cat)] (1) and Pt(pap)(py-cat)] (2) with 2-(phenylazo)pyridine (pap), 4-2-(anthracen-9-ylmethylene)amino]ethyl]benzene-1,2-diol (H(2)an-cat), and 4-2-(pyren-1-ylmethylene)amino]ethyl]benzene-1,2-diol (H2py-cat) were prepared, and their photoinduced cytotoxicity was studied. The complexes were found to release catecholate ligand in the presence of excess glutathione (GSH), resulting in cellular toxicity in the cancer cells. The catecholate complex Pt(pap)(cat)] (3) was prepared and used as a control. Complex 3, which is structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, has platinum(II) in a distorted square-planar geometry. The complexes are redox-active, showing responses near 0.6 and 1.0 V versus SCE in N,N-dimethylformamide/0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate corresponding to a two-step catechol oxidation process and at -0.3 and -1.3 V for reduction of the pap ligand. Complex 1 showed remarkable light-induced cytotoxicity in HaCaT (human skin keratinocytes) and MCF-7 (human breast cancer) cells, giving IC50 value of similar to 5 mu M in visible light of 400-700 nm and >40 mu M in the dark. The 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA) assay showed the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which seems to trigger apoptosis, as is evident from the annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)/propidium iodide (PI) assay. The fluorescence microscopic images showed significant nuclear localization of the complexes and free ligands. A mechanistic study revealed possible reduction of the coordinated azo bond of pap by cellular GSH, releasing the catecholate ligand and resulting in remarkable photochemotherapeutic action of the complexes.
