O questionamento dos alunos é reconhecido como uma capacidade fundamental, de nível superior, associada ao desenvolvimento de outras competências centrais, como o pensamento crítico, a resolução de problemas ou a capacidade de reflexão, assumindo especial relevância no contexto de disciplinas científicas. O presente estudo surge no atual enquadramento de reestruturação curricular do ensino universitário em Portugal, como um caso de colaboração estreita entre investigadores do Departamento de Educação e professores das Unidades Curriculares de “Microbiologia”, “Genética” e “Temas e Laboratórios de Biologia”, do Departamento de Biologia, na Universidade de Aveiro. Estas unidades curriculares, dirigidas a alunos de várias licenciaturas, são sobretudo frequentadas por alunos do primeiro ano das licenciaturas em Biologia e Biologia/Geologia. Um dos principais objetivos era identificar contextos de prática no âmbito dos quais pudéssemos sugerir estratégias inovadoras de Ensino, Aprendizagem e Avaliação (EAA), que promovessem o questionamento dos estudantes, numa lógica de alinhamento construtivo. Outro dos objetivos era também o de analisar e caracterizar o questionamento dos alunos, associado à diversidade de estratégias adotadas. A presente investigação adota princípios dos paradigmas naturalista e sociocrítico, seguindo uma abordagem metodológica sobretudo de natureza qualitativa. As várias situações de EAA foram desenhadas, implementadas e adaptadas atendendo às particularidades de cada Unidade Curricular (UC), ao longo de dois estudos (2007/2008 e 2008/2009). O questionamento dos alunos foi caracterizado nos diversos contextos de EAA, atendendo ao seu nível cognitivo. Realizaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas com alunos selecionados, no fim de cada estudo (17 alunos no total), e também com os professores envolvidos (4 professores), no fim do segundo estudo. A análise do questionamento dos alunos nos variados contextos, permitiu confirmar um questionamento espontâneo pouco frequente e tendencialmente de baixo nível cognitivo associado à expressão oral. No entanto, em situações com efeitos sumativos na avaliação, verificou-se um maior envolvimento e uma maior participação dos alunos, associados a uma maior frequência e qualidade do questionamento. Confirmamos o papel fundamental que a avaliação desempenha no decurso da aprendizagem, valorizando o seu papel formativo bem como o feedback proporcionado pelos professores no sentido de alcançar melhores desempenhos em termos de questionamento e, em última análise, em termos de aprendizagem. Todas as evidências recolhidas permitem afirmar que o questionamento constituiu um importante motor para um alinhamento construtivo entre o ensino, a aprendizagem e a avaliação, devidamente articulados com os objetivos de aprendizagem de cada UC. Comprovamos, também, que se não forem criadas situações em que os alunos sejam incentivados a questionar, situações que constituam para si um desafio, um estímulo extrínseco, apenas teremos acesso ao seu questionamento oral e espontâneo, com as características que já lhe são conhecidas. Afirmamos, assim, a relevância de se desenharem situações de ensino, aprendizagem e avaliação, que promovam nos alunos o desenvolvimento da competência de questionamento. Um outro objetivo central de investigação a que nos tínhamos proposto era a caracterização do questionamento dos alunos numa perspetiva mais holística, situando-o como uma competência fundamental que deverá ser desenvolvida em contextos educativos, mas também ao longo da vida. Avançamos com uma proposta de modelo de competência de questionamento, como um dos resultados principais do presente estudo. Este modelo surge de toda a experiência investigativa e, sobretudo, do estudo aprofundado de dois casos, correspondentes a dois alunos selecionados, que permitiu a elucidação das dimensões de competência. Assumindo o questionamento como competência, consideramos que o modelo proposto, e ainda em evolução, poderá representar um importante contributo para a teoria e para a prática do questionamento.

Adolescents from areas of high deprivation are often assumed to have low aspirations for the future. However, recent research has suggested otherwise and there have been calls for more substantial investigation into the relationship between poverty and aspiration. This article reports levels and variation in aspiration from 1,214 adolescents (49.5% male; 50.5% female) living in areas of high deprivation across 20 London boroughs. A strength of this study is our large and diverse population of low socio-economic status (SES) adolescents, comprising of white British (22%), black African (21%), black Caribbean (9%), Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Other Asian (24%), mixed ethnicity (9%), and 15% defining themselves as Other. Our measures indicated a high group level of reported aspiration with notable variations. Females reported higher educational (but not occupational) aspirations than males; white British students reported lower educational and occupational aspirations than other ethnic groups; and black African children reported the highest educational aspirations. Perceived parental support for education had the largest positive association with aspirations. In contrast to previous findings from studies carried out in the United States, aspirations were found to be negatively associated with perceptions of school and school peer environment. These measures explored feelings of safety, happiness and belonging within the school environment and school peer group. We discuss possible explanations for this unexpected finding within our population of adolescents from UK state schools and how it might affect future policy interventions. This study makes an important contribution to the literature on adolescent aspirations because of the unique nature of the data sample and the multiple domains of functioning and aspiration measured.

Purpose: The aim of this educational poster is to introduce the technical principles of cerebral perfusion CT and to provide examples of its clinical applications and potential limitations in the everyday emergency practice. Methods and materials: Cerebral perfusion CT is a well established investigatory tool for many vascular and parenchymal brain dysfunctions. CT perfusion maps allow a semiquantitative assessment of cerebral perfusion. Results: Currently, cerebral perfusion CT has a pivotal role in differentiating reversible from irreversible ischemic parenchymal insult besides its integral role in grading vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Furthermore, cerebral perfusion CT can be coupled to acetazolamide administration in order to assess the cerebrovascular reserve capacity before performing extra-/intra-cranial bypass surgery in patients with cerebral vascular insufficiency. Cerebral perfusion CT can also identify diffuse abnormalities of cerebral perfusion in children with traumatic brain injury showing a low initial GCS in order to predict the final outcome regarding the late occurrence of irreversible parenchymal damage. Cerebral Perfusion CT is also able to detect focal parenchymal perfusion abnormalities in acute epileptic seizures. Conclusion: Cerebral perfusion CT can be integrated in the management of many vascular, traumatic and functional disorders of the brain.

Abstract This thesis seeks to answer a number of questions concerning the deficit and debt in Canada. It focuses pri.arily on the federal level of government but with SOBe discussion of provincial governaent policy as well. In ~997, Canada's federal debt caae close ro six hundred billion dollars - $594 billion or 74.4 % of Gross Do.estic Product (GDP) to be exact. The purpose of this theses is threefold: To find out why Canada accu.ulated such a debt, to discover if there is a so-called debt crisis; and to discover if it is possible to preserve Canada's national welfare state given the financial restraints that have been adopted by both federal and provincial governments. Politicians are torn between economist' two contrasting views regarding deficits: Neo-Keynesian and neo-conservative. The neoKeynesian school focuses al1llOst exclusively on the short term stability of the economy and tends to dismiss concerns regarding the level of debt. Neo conservatives focus almost exclusively on the perceived costs of growth in the national debt and are willing to forego any stabilization benefits to ensure that the debt is controlled. These polar view do have one thing in coa.on; both confix-. that deficits influence govermaent policies. Both of these econoBic theories will have far-reaching influences on the federal gover1lJlJent's decision-making process. These economic theories will be discussed throughout this thesis.

Despite the increasing public profile of lesbian childbearing, public health resources for expectant women often bear heterosexist assumptions and create barriers to accessing information relevant to lesbian mothering experiences. This descriptive, exploratory study examined one lesbian couple's perceived educational needs for effective support, barriers to access, strategies for locating care, and the impact of childbearing on their lives, as well as their reflections on inviting ways to offer supportive practices in a public health context. A case study approach used feminist ethnographic methodology and purposeful convenience sampling. A prenatal and a postnatal open-ended interview were completed with 1 white, middle-class, able, lesbian childbearing couple, each ofwhom has birthed as coparent and biological mother in this couple relationship. Despite this couple's immense situated privilege, they struggled to locate the support they sought for childbearing in a way that offered optimal emotional and physical care from the preconceptual to postpartum stages and which maintained confidentiality or anonymity as desired. They created meaningful care through personal networks. The findings were framed using invitational and feminist theories: how people, places, programs, processes, policies, and politics contributed to educational support. A three part conceptual framework emerged which identified components of access to support: perceived safety of resources, disclosure status, situated privilege, and public or private availability of information. The consequences of lack of public access to comprehensive childbearing care for lesbian women and their communities are described. Educational possibilities addressed systemic heterosexism through the development of sensitive educators, meaningful curriculum, program planning, explicit policies, community partnerships, and political leadership with respect to both institutional and research venues.

A detailed theoretical investigation of the large amplitude motions in the S, excited electronic state of formic acid (HCOOH) was done. This study focussed on the the S, «- So electronic band system of formic acid (HCOOH). The torsion and wagging large amplitude motions of the S, were considered in detail. The potential surfaces were simulated using RHF/UHF ab-initio calculations for the two electronic states. The energy levels were evaluated by the variational method using free rotor basis functions for the torsional coordinates and harmonic oscillator basis functions for the wagging coordinates. The simulated spectrum was compared to the slit-jet-cooled fluorescence excitation spectrum allowing for the assignment of several vibronic bands. A rotational analysis of certain bands predicted that the individual bands are a mixture of rotational a, b and c-type components.The electronically allowed transition results in the c-type or Franck-Condon band and the electronically forbidden, but vibronically allowed transition creates the a/b-type or Herzberg-Teller components. The inversion splitting between these two band types differs for each band. The analysis was able to predict the ratio of the a, b and c-type components of each band.

The NeO'liberal State and the Crisis ofPublic Service Broadcasting in the Anglo-American Democracies The purpose ofthis analysis ofthe present condition ofpublic service broadcasting in the Anglo- American democracies was to investigate whether such media can still be regarded as the primarypublic spherefor a dialogue between each nation 's civil society and the State. The motivationfor this thesis was based on a presumption that such fora for public discussion on the central issues of each society have become viewed as less relevant bypoliticians andpolicy-makers and thepublics they were intended to serve in the Anglo-American democracies over thepast two decades. It is speculated that this is the case because ofa beliefthat the post-war consensus between the respective States andpublics that led to the construction of the Keynesian Welfare State and the notion ofpublic service broadcasting has been displaced by an individualistic, neo-liberal, laissez-faire ideology. In other words, broadcasting as a consumer-oriented, commercial commodity has superseded concerns pertaining to the importance ofthe public interest. The methodology employed in this thesis is a comparative analysisfrom a criticalpolitical economy perspective. It was considered appropriate to focus on the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the\ United States because they comprise the four largest Anglo-American nations with democratic political systems andprimarily market economies. Justificationfor this particular sample is reinforced by thefact that case study countries also share a common socio-political and economic tradition. The evidence assembledfor this thesis consisted almost exclusively ofexisting literature on the subjects ofpublic service broadcasting, global economic andpolitical integration, and the ascendance ofthe 'free-market ' ethos in Western democracies since the late mid- to late-1970s. In essence, this thesis could be considered as a reinterpretation ofthe existing literature relevant to these issues. Several important common features werefound among the political, economic and broadcasting systems of the four case study nations. It is proposed that the prevalence of the neo-liberal world view throughout the political and policy environments of the four countries has undermined the stability and credibility of each nation 's national public service broadcasting organization, although with varying intensity and effect,. Deregulation ofeach nation 's broadcasting system and the supremacy ofthe notion of 'consumer sovereignty' have marginalized the view of broadcasting on any basis other than strictly economic criteria in thefour case study countries. This thesis concludes that,for a reconstruction ofa trulyparticipatory anddemocraticpublicsphere to be realized in the present as well as thefuture, a reassessment ofthe conventional concept ofthe 'public sphere ' is necessary. Therefore, it is recommended that thefocus ofpolicy-makers in each Anglo-American democracy be redirectedfrom that which conceived ofan all-encompassing, large, state-ownedand operated public broadcasting service toward a view which considers alternativeforms ofpublic communication, such as local community and ethnic broadcasting operations, that are likely to be more responsive to the needs of the increasingly diverse and heterogeneous populations that comprise the modem Anglo-American democracies. The traditional conception of public broadcasters must change in accordance with its contemporary environment if the fundamental principles of the public sphere and public service broadcasting are to be realized.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine various policy implementation models, and to determine what use they are to a government. In order to insure that governmental proposals are created and exercised in an effective manner, there roust be some guidelines in place which will assist in resolving difficult situations. All governments face the challenge of responding to public demand, by delivering the type of policy responses that will attempt to answer those demands. The problem for those people in positions of policy-making responsibility is to balance the competitive forces that would influence policy. This thesis examines provincial government policy in two unique cases. The first is the revolutionary recommendations brought forth in the Hall -Dennis Report. The second is the question of extending full -funding to the end of high school in the separate school system. These two cases illustrate how divergent and problematic the policy-making duties of any government may be. In order to respond to these political challenges decision-makers must have a clear understanding of what they are attempting to do. They must also have an assortment of policy-making models that will insure a policy response effectively deals with the issue under examination. A government must make every effort to insure that all policymaking methods are considered, and that the data gathered is inserted into the most appropriate model. Currently, there is considerable debate over the benefits of the progressive individualistic education approach as proposed by the Hall -Dennis Committee. This debate is usually intensified during periods of economic uncertainty. Periodically, the province will also experience brief yet equally intense debate on the question of separate school funding. At one level, this debate centres around the efficiency of maintaining two parallel education systems, but the debate frequently has undertones of the religious animosity common in Ontario's history. As a result of the two policy cases under study we may ask ourselves these questions: a) did the policies in question improve the general quality of life in the province? and b) did the policies unite the province? In the cases of educational instruction and finance the debate is ongoing and unsettling. Currently, there is a widespread belief that provincial students at the elementary and secondary levels of education are not being educated adequately to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century. The perceived culprit is individual education which sees students progressing through the system at their own pace and not meeting adequate education standards. The question of the finance of Catholic education occasionally rears its head in a painful fashion within the province. Some public school supporters tend to take extension as a personal religious defeat, rather than an opportunity to demonstrate that educational diversity can be accommodated within Canada's most populated province. This thesis is an attempt to analyze how successful provincial policy-implementation models were in answering public demand. A majority of the public did not demand additional separate school funding, yet it was put into place. The same majority did insist on an examination of educational methods, and the government did put changes in place. It will also demonstrate how policy if wisely created may spread additional benefits to the public at large. Catholic students currently enjoy a much improved financial contribution from the province, yet these additional funds were taken from somewhere. The public system had it funds reduced with what would appear to be minimal impact. This impact indicates that government policy is still sensitive to the strongly held convictions of those people in opposition to a given policy.
