The authors describe the operation of an actively modelocked Er fibre laser incorporating a chrped in fibre Bragg reflection grating as one end mirror to the cavity, acting as a lumped highly dispersive element. In one oreientation the grating shifted the cavity into normal dispersion regime and pulses of -25ps duration were produced. In the opposite oreintation, the cavity dispersion was anomalous and ~8ps pulses were produced with characterisitics typical of solitons propagating in a periodically perturbed system.

Over the last twenty years, we have been continuously seeing R&D efforts and activities in developing optical fibre grating devices and technologies and exploring their applications for telecommunications, optical signal processing and smart sensing, and recently for medical care and biophotonics. In addition, we have also witnessed successful commercialisation of these R&Ds, especially in the area of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) based distributed sensor network systems and technologies for engineering structure monitoring in industrial sectors such as oil, energy and civil engineering. Despite countless published reports and papers and commercial realisation, we are still seeing significant and novel research activities in this area. This invited paper will give an overview on recent advances in fibre grating devices and their sensing applications with a focus on novel fibre gratings and their functions and grating structures in speciality fibres. The most recent developments in (i) femtosecond inscription for microfluidic/grating devices, (2) tilted grating based novel polarisation devices and (3) dual-peak long-period grating based DNA hybridisation sensors will be discussed.

A prototype fibre-optic system using interferometric wavelength-shift detection, capable of multiplexing up to 32 fibre-optic Bragg grating strain and temperature sensors with identical characteristics, has been demonstrated. This system is based on a spatially multiplexed scheme for use with fibre-based low-coherence interferometric sensors, reported previously. Four fibre-optic Bragg grating channels using the same fibre grating have been demonstrated for measuring quasi-static strain and temperature.

A novel wavelength-division-multiplexed in-fibre Bragg grating sensor system combined with high resolution drift-compensated interferometric wavelength-shift detection is described. This crosstalk-free system is based on the use of an interferometric wavelength scanner and a low resolution spectrometer. A four element system is demonstrated for temperature measurement, and a resolution of ±0.1°C has been achieved.

A novel quasidistributed in-flber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensor system has been developed for temperature profiling in vivo in the human body for medical applications, e.g., hyperthermia treatment. This paper provides the operating principle of FBG temperature sensors and then the design of the sensor head. High-resolution detection of the wavelength-shifts induced by temperature changes are achieved using drift-compensated interferometric detection while the return signals from the FBG sensor array are demultiplexed with a simple monochromator which offers crosstalk-free wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM). A "strain-free" probe is designed by enclosing the FBG sensor array in a protection sleeve. A four FBG sensor system is demonstrated and the experimental results are in good agreement with those obtained by traditional electrical thermocouple sensors. A resolution of 0.1°C and an accuracy of ±0.2°C over a temperature range of 30-60°C have been achieved, which meet established medical requirements.

A Bragg grating fast tunable filter prototype working over a linear tuning range of 45 nm with a maximum tuning speed of 21 nm/ms has been realized. The tunable filter system is based on two piezoelectric stack actuators moving a mechanical device thus compressing an apodized fiber Bragg grating. The filter allows both traction and compression and can work in transmission and in reflection. It is designed to work with a channel spacing of 100 GHz according to the ITU specifications for wavelength division multiplexing systems.

The feasibility of in-fiber Bragg gratings for simultaneous acoustic field and temperature sensing was demonstrated. A noise-limited pressure resolution of about 4.5×10-4 Atm/√Hz and a temperature resolution of 0.2 °C was achieved.

We study the effects of temperature and strain on the spectra of the first and second-order diffraction attenuation bands of a single long-period grating (LPG) in step-index fibre. The primary and second-order attenuation bands had comparable strength with the second-order bands appearing in the visible and near-infra red parts of the spectrum. Using first and second-order diffraction to the eighth cladding mode a sensitivity matrix was obtained with limiting accuracy given by cross-sensitivity of ∼ 1.19% of the measurement. The sensing scheme presented as a limiting temperature and strain resolution of ± 0.7 °C and ∼ ± 25 με. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A long period fibre grating written in progressive three layered optical fibre was examined. The bending sensitivity of the optical fibre was measured. It was found that the fibre shows an attenuation band that has a very low bending sensitivity compared to normal step-index fibres.

A long period grating is interrogated with a fibre Bragg grating using a derivative spectroscopy technique. A quasi-linear relationship between the output of the sensing scheme and the curvature experienced by the long period grating is demonstrated, with a sensitivity of 5.05 m and with an average curvature resolution of 2.9 × 10-2 m-1. In addition, the feasibility of multiplexing an in-line series of long period gratings with this interrogation scheme is demonstrated with two pairs of fibre Bragg gratings and long period gratings. With this arrangement the cross-talk error between channels was less than ± 2.4 × 10-3 m-1.

We present, for the first time to our knowledge, experimental evidence showing that superimposed blazed fiber Bragg gratings may be fabricated and used to extend the dynamic range of a grating-based spectrometer. Blazed gratings of 4° and 8° were superimposed in germanosilicate fiber by ultraviolet inscription and used in conjunction with a coated charged-coupled device array to interrogate a wavelength-division-multiplexing sensor array. We show that the system can be used to monitor strain and temperature sensors simultaneously with an employable bandwidth which is extendedable to 70 nm.

A fully distributed temperature sensor consisting of a chirped fibre Bragg grating has been demonstrated. By fitting a numerical model of the grating response including temperature change, position and width of localized heating applied to the grating, we achieve measurements of these parameters to within 2.2 K, 149 μm and 306 μm of applied values, respectively. Assuming that deviation from linearity is accounted for in making measurement, much higher precision is achievable and the standard deviations for these measurements are 0.6 K, 28.5 μm and 56.0 μm, respectively. © 2004 IOP Publishing Ltd.

A long period grating (LPG) written in a standard optical fibre was modified by using a femtosecond laser to induce an asymmetric change in the cladding's refractive index. This device produced blue and red wavelength shifts depending on the orientation of applied curvature, with maximum sensitivities of -1.6 nm m and +3.8 nm m, suggesting that this type of LPG may be useful as a shape sensor.

We propose a dual-parameter optical sensor device achieved by UV inscription of a hybrid long-period grating-fiber Bragg grating structure in D fiber. The hybrid configuration permits the detection of the temperature from the latter's response and measurement of the external refractive index from the former's response. In addition, the host D fiber permits effective modification of the device's sensitivity by cladding etching. The grating sensor has been used to measure the concentrations of aqueous sugar solutions, demonstrating its potential capability to detect concentration changes as small as 0.01%.

We present a simple optical chemsensor device based on tilted Bragg grating structures ultraviolet-inscribed in conventional multimode fiber and sensitized by a hydrofluoric (HF)-etching treatment. The transition behaviors of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) from normal to tilted structures and their spectral evolution under HF-etching have been studied. The etched devices have been used to measure the concentrations of sugar solution, showing a potential capability of detecting concentration changes as small as 0.5%, which is an order of magnitude lower than that of previously reported FBG sensors in single-mode fiber.
