The solid-state transformation behaviour of the icosahedral phase in rapidly solidified Al-20 at.% Mn has been investigated by in situ heating experiments in the transmission electron microscope. As-rapidly-solidified Al-20 at.% Mn consists mainly of a dendritic icosahedral phase, with a small amount of interdendritic f.c.c. agr-Al. During subsequent heat treatment at temperatures below about 500°C, the dendritic icosahedral phase grows and consumes the interdendritic agr-Al. At about 500°C the decagonal phase nucleates near icosahedral dendrite and grain boundaries and then grows into the icosahedral matrix by lateral motion of ledges 10-20 nm high across facet planes normal to the twofold symmetry axes. At about 600°C the decagonal phase transforms into a crystalline phase. The present study suggests that solid-state decomposition of the icosahedral phase is the mechanism of decagonal phase formation in as-rapidly-solidified Al-Mn alloys.

We report a single C-13 spin edited selective proton-proton correlation experiment to decipher overcrowded 13C coupled proton NMR spectra of weakly dipolar coupled spin systems. The experiment unravels the masked C-13 satellites in proton spectrum and permits the measurement of one bond carbon-proton residual dipolar couplings in I3S and for each diastereotopic proton in I2S groups. It also provides all the possible homonuclear proton-proton residual couplings which are otherwise difficult to extract from the broad and featureless one dimensional H-1 spectrum, in addition to enantiodifferentiation in a chiral molecule. Employment of heteronuclear (C-13) decoupling in the evolution period results in complete demixing of overlapped signals from enantiomers. The observed anomalous intensity pattern in strongly dipolar coupled methyl protons in methyl selective correlation experiment has been interpreted using polarization operator formalism. Solid acid polymer electrolytes (SAPE) were synthesised using polyvinyl alcohol, potassium iodide and sulphuric acid in different molar ratios by solution cast technique. The temperature dependent nature of electrical conductivity and the impedance of the polymer electrolytes were determined along with the associated activation energy. The electrical conductivity at room temperature was found to be strongly depended on the amorphous nature of the polymers and H2SO4 concentration. The ac (100 Hz to 10 MHz) and dc conductivities of the polymer electrolytes with different H2SO4 concentrations were analyzed. A maximum dc conductivity of 1.05 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) has been achieved at ambient temperature for electrolytes containing 5 M H2SO4. The frequency and temperature dependent dielectric and electrical modulus properties of the SAPE were studied. The charge transport in the present polymer electrolyte was obtained using Wagner's polarization technique, which demonstrated the charge transport to be mainly due to ions. Using these solid acid polymer electrolytes novel Zn/SAPE/MnO2 solid state batteries were fabricated and their discharge capacity was calculated. An open circuit voltage of 1.758V was obtained for 5 M H2SO4 based Zn/SAPE/MnO2 battery. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Langevin dynamics simulation studies have been employed to calculate the temperature dependent free energy surface and folding characteristics of a 500 monomer long linear alkane (polyethylene) chain with a realistic interaction potential. Both equilibrium and temperature quench simulation studies have been carried out. Using the shape anisotropy parameter (S) of the folded molecule as the order parameter, we find a weakly first order phase transition between the high-temperature molten globule and low-temperature rodlike crystalline states separated by a small barrier of the order of k(B)T. Near the melting temperature (580 K), we observe an intriguing intermittent fluctuation with pronounced ``1/f noise characteristics'' between these two states with large difference in shape and structure. We have also studied the possibilities of different pathways of folding to states much below the melting point. At 300 K starting from the all-trans linear configuration, the chain folds stepwise into a very regular fourfold crystallite with very high shape anisotropy. Whereas, when quenched from a high temperature (900 K) random coil regime, we identify a two step transition from the random coiled state to a molten globulelike state and, further, to a anisotropic rodlike state. The trajectory reveals an interesting coupling between the two order parameters, namely, radius of gyration (R-g) and the shape anisotropy parameter (S). The rodlike final state of the quench trajectory is characterized by lower shape anisotropy parameter and significantly larger number of gauche defects as compared to the final state obtained through equilibrium simulation starting from all-trans linear chain. The quench study shows indication of a nucleationlike pathway from the molten globule to the rodlike state involving an underlying rugged energy landscape. Alkali aluminosilicate glasses prepared by the gel and the melt routes have been investigated by Si-29 and Al-27 MAS NMR spectroscopy. It is found that Al has a tetrahedral coordination in the gel glasses modified with equivalent proportions of alkalis unlike in a pure aluminosilicate glass where Al has both four and six coordinations. Silicon is present as Q4 units in all the 5M2O 5Al2O3 9OSiO2 ( M = Li, Na and K) gel glasses studied whereas it is present in Q2 or Q3 species in the lithium aluminosilicate glasses of compositions 40Li2O x Al2O3 (1-x)SiO2 (1 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 15) and xLi2O 10Al2O3 (1-x)SiO2 (20 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 40). The combination of Q2 and Q3 is also found in certain sodium aluminosilicate glasses, but they change to Q2 and Q1 as the concentration of SiO2 decreases.

The excitation gaps in the singlet and triplet manifolds for finite Hubbard models in one, two and three dimensions have been obtained using different approximate configuration interaction (CI) schemes, as a function of the correlation strength, by using valence bond (VB) functions constructed over the molecular orbital (MO) basis. These are compared with numerically exact results and it is found that the scheme in which all particle hole excitations below a given threshold are included is the method of choice. The excitation energies are well reproduced, in trend as well as magnitude, particularly when the threshold equals the bandwidth of the corresponding noninteracting system.

A fully automated, versatile Temperature Programmed Desorption (TDP), Temperature Programmed Reaction (TPR) and Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA) system has been designed and fabricated. The system consists of a micro-reactor which can be evacuated to 10−6 torr and can be heated from 30 to 750°C at a rate of 5 to 30°C per minute. The gas evolved from the reactor is analysed by a quadrupole mass spectrometer (1–300 amu). Data on each of the mass scans and the temperature at a given time are acquired by a PC/AT system to generate thermograms. The functioning of the system is exemplified by the temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of oxygen from YBa2Cu3−xCoxO7 ± δ, catalytic ammonia oxidation to NO over YBa2Cu3O7−δ and anaerobic oxidation of methanol to CO2, CO and H2O over YBa2Cu3O7−δ (Y123) and PrBa2Cu3O7−δ (Pr123) systems.

A model incorporating the surface conductivity and morphology of the composite solid electrolytes is envisaged to explain their conduction behaviour. The conductivity data on LinX−50 m/o Al2O3 (X = F−, Cl−, Br−, CO32−, SO42−, PO43−) composites prepared by thermal decomposition of LinX·2nAl(OH)3·mH2O salts and Li2SO4−A (A=Al2O3, CeO2, Y2O3, Yb2O3, Zr2O3, ZrO2 and BaTiO3) composites prepared by mechanical mixing of the components are examined in the light of this model. It is surmised that the particle size of both the dispersoids and the hosts not only influence the ionic conductivity of the host matrix but also affect its bulk properties.

A small-cluster approximation has been used to calculate the activation barriers for the d.c. conductivity in ionic glasses. The main emphasis of this approach is on the importance of the hitherto ignored polarization energy contribution to the total activation energy. For the first time it has been demonstrated that the d.c. conductivity activation energy can be calculated by considering ionic migration to a neighbouring vacancy in a smali cluster of ions consisting of face-sharing anion polyhedra. The activation energies from the model calculations have been compared with the experimental values in the case of highly modified lithium thioborate glasses.

In this article we present a new, general but simple, microscopic expression for time-dependent solvation energy of an ion. This expression is surprisingly similar to the expression for the time-dependent dielectric friction on a moving ion. We show that both the Chandra-Bagchi and the Fried-Mukamel formulations of solvation dynamics can be easily derived from this expression. This expression leads to an almost perfect agreement of the theory with all the available computer simulation results. Second, we show here for the first time that the mobility of a light solute ion can significantly accelerate its own solvation, specially in the underdamped limit. The latter result is also in excellent agreement with the computer simulations.

Electronic absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy have been used to investigate the interaction of the fullerenes C60 and C70 with diethylaniline, and with aromatic solvents such as benzene. C60 interacts weakly with aromatic amines in the ground state while C70 does not interact at all. Steady state fluorescence emission and lifetime measurements show that both C60 and C70 form excited state complexes (exciplexes) with the amines in non-aromatic solvents such as methylcyclohexane, but not in benzene. In benzene, only fluorescence quenching is observed due to the interaction between the π systems of the aromatic solvent and the fullerene in the ground state. This is also borne out by the systematic study of solvent effects on the absorption and emission spectra of the fullerenes.

The pi-electronic structure of anthracene is discussed by combining exact solutions of the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model and semiempirical PM3 calculations. Symmetry adaptation of the 2.8 million singlet valence-bond (VB) diagrams is explicitly demonstrated for D2h and electron-hole symmetry. Standard PPP parameters provide a comprehensive fit to one- and two-photon anthracene spectra and intensities up to the strong 1 B-1(3u)-absorption at 5.24 eV, the 10th excited state in the dense correlated spectrum, and indicate a reassignment of two-photon absorptions. The singlet-triplet gap and fine-structure constants also agree with experiment. Fully-relaxed PM3 geometries are obtained for the anthracene ground state and for singlet, triplet, and charged bipolarons. The PM3 bond lengths correlate well with PPP bond orders for the idealized structure. Single-determinantal PM3 excitation and relaxation energies for bipolarons are consistent with exact PPP results and contrast all-valence electron with pi-electron calculations. Several correlation effects are noted in the rich pi-spectra of anthracene in connection with improved PPP modeling of conjugated molecules and polymers.

Ferrites of the formula MoxFe3-xO4, prepared by a soft-chemistry route, show mixed valence states of both iron and molybdenum cations. Mössbauer studies show that Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions are present on both the A and B sites, giving Fe an average oxidation state between 2+ and 3+. Molybdenum is present in the 3+ and the 4+ states on the B sites. The presence of Mo in the 3+ state has been established by determining the Mo3+-O distance (2.2 Å), for the first time, by Mo K-EXAFS. The mixed valence of Fe on both the A and B sites and of Mo on the B sites is responsible for the fast electron transfer between the cations. All the Mössbauer parameters including the line width show a marked change at a composition (x ? 0.3) above which the concentration of Fe2+A increases rapidly.
