In this article, we report on an approach of using an emulsion polymerized polymer in preparing organic-inorganic nanocomposites through a sol-gel technique. By mixing a polymer emulsion with prehydrolyzed tetraethoxysilane transparent poly(butyl methacrylate)/SiO2, nanocomposites were prepared as shown by TEM. AFM, FTIR, and XPS results show that there is a strong interaction between polymer latex particles and the SiO2 network. Comparison of the emulsion method with a traditional solution method shows that nanocomposites can be prepared by both methods, but there is some difference in their morphology and properties.

Phenolphthalein based polyarylate macrocyclic oligomers were selectively synthesized by an interfacial polycondensation reaction of o-phthaloyl dichloride with phenolphthalein. The high selectivity benefits from the role of phenolphthalein as a color indicator, an efficient phase transfer catalyst, acid a preferred conformation of the starting materials as indicated by analyzing a single-crystal X-ray structure of an analogous macrocycle. The melt ROP of phenolphthalein polyarylate cyclic dimer was studied using nucleophilic initiators, The molecular weight of the resulting polymers builds up very rapidly at the very early stage of polymerization but decreases with time. During the ROP of cyclic dimer, analogous macrocycles with higher degree of polymerization (n greater than or equal to 3) and linear oligomers were produced by backbiting reaction especially at later stage of polymerization. Conversion of cyclic dimer is very fast at the earlier stage of polymerization and then increases slowly with time as analyzed by gel permeation chromatography. However, the total amount of cyclic oligomers in the ROP system increases with time at the later stage of polymerization because of the formation of larger macrocycles. The resulting polymers are amorphous. Glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) of these polymers are influenced by the polymerization time, type of initiator, and initiator concentration.

Two new compounds, [CoL2(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2). 8H(2)O (1) and [CoL(H2O)(2)(CH3CO2)(2)]. H2O (2), were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(benzimidazole) (L). In 1, each cobalt ion is coordinated to four nitrogen atoms from four molecules of L, and to two water molecules. Metal ions are bridged by L ligands to form infinite (4, 4) networks that contain 44-membered rings. The (4, 4) networks of 1 stack in a parallel fashion, resulting in the formation of large channels in the material. In 2, each cobalt ion is coordinated to two N atoms from two L molecules, two water molecules and two carboxylate O atoms from two acetate anions. Each L molecule is coordinated to two cobalt ions, acting as a bridging ligand as in 1. The bridged cobalt ions form an infinite zigzag chain structure.

Three new compounds, [ZnL1.5(H2O)(SO4)]. 6H(2)O 1, [ZnL1.5(H2O)(2)][NO3](2). 2H(2)O 2 and [CdL1.5(H2O)(2)(SO4)]. 4H(2)O 3 were obtained from self-assembly of the corresponding metal salts with 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole) (L). In both 1 and 2 zinc ion is five-co-ordinated, showing a less-common trigonal bipyramidal co-ordination polyhedron, while cadmium ion of 3 is six-co-ordinated with a common octahedral arrangement. The sulfate ions of 1 and 3 are co-ordinated, however the nitrate ions of 2 are not. Each of the three compounds is composed of a (6, 3) network with the hexagonal smallest circuit containing six metal ions and six L; each L is co-ordinated to two metal ions, acting as a bridging ligand. In 1 the 2-D sheet of (6, 3) networks is interpenetrated in an inclined mode by symmetry related, identical sheets to give an interlocked 3-D structure, while the (6, 3) networks of both 2 and 3 stack in a parallel fashion to construct frameworks having channels.

The miscibility, spherulite growth kinetics, and morphology of binary blends of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) were studied with differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). As the PMA content increases in the blends, the glass-transition temperature and cold-crystallization temperature increase, but the melting point decreases. The interaction parameter between PHB and PMA, obtained from an analysis of the equilibrium-melting-point depression, is -0.074. The presence of an amorphous PMA component results in a reduction in the rate of spherulite growth of PRE. The radial growth rates of spherulites were analyzed with the Lauritzen-Hoffman model. The spherulites of PHB were volume-filled, indicating the inclusion of PMA within the spherulites. The long period obtained from SAXS increases with increased PMA content, implying that the amorphous PMA is entrapped in the interlamellar region of PHB during the crystallization process of PHB. All the results presented show that PHB and PMA are miscible in the melt. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Nanopowders of amorphous silicon nitride were densified and sintered without additives under ultrahigh pressure (1.0-5.0 GPa) between room temperature and 1600 degrees C. The powders had a mean diameter of 18 nm and contained similar to 5.0 wt% oxygen that came from air-exposure oxidation, Sintering results at different temperatures were characterized in terms of sintering density, hardness, phase structure, and grain size. It was observed that the nanopowders can be pressed to a high density (87%) even at room temperature under the high pressure. Bulk Si3N4 amorphous and crystalline ceramics (relative density: 95-98%) were obtained at temperatures slightly below the onset of crystallization (1000-1100 degrees C and above 1420 degrees C, respectively. Rapid grain growth occurred during the crystallization leading to a grain size (>160 nm) almost 1 order of magnitude greater than the starting particulate diameters, With the rise of sintering temperature, a final density was reached between 1350 and 1420 degrees C, which seemed to be independent of the pressure applied (1.0-5.0 GPa), The densification temperature observed under the high pressure is lower by 580 degrees C than that by hot isostatic pressing sintering, suggesting a significantly enhanced low-temperature sintering of the nanopowders under a high external pressure.

The present report deals with some results on phase behavior, miscibility and phase separation for several polymer blends casting from solutions. These blends are grouped as the amorphous polymer blends, blends containing a crystalline polymer or two crystalline polymers. The blends of PMMA/PVAc were miscible and underwent phase separation at elevated temperature, exhibited LCST behavior. The benzoylated PPO has both UCST and LCST nature. For the systems composed of crystalline polymer poly(ethylene oxide) and amorphous polyurethane, of two crystalline polymers poly(epsilon-caprolactone) and poly[3,3,-bis-(chloromethyl) oxetane], appear a single T-g, indicating these blends are miscible. The interaction parameter B's were determined to be -14 J cm(-3), -15 J cm(-3) respectively. Phase separation of phenolphthalein poly(ether ether sulfone)/PEO blends were discussed in terms of thermal properties, such as their melting and crystallization behavior.

Novel water insoluble sodium sulfonate-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone)s containing cyclohexylidene in the main chain with degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized from nucleophilic polycondensation of 5, 5'-carbonylbis (2-fluorobenzenesulfonate), 4, 4'-difluorobenzophenone and 4, 4'-cyclohexylidenebisphenol. The polymers showed excellent thermal stability and good water resistance as well. The DSC diagrams and WAXD patterns indicated an amorphous morphological structure of these polymers. A comprison of some properties between these copolymers and polymers derived from bisphenol A was given.

A novel glucose biosensor based on capacitive detection has been developed using molecularly imprinted polymers. The sensitive layer was prepared by electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine on a gold electrode in the presence of the template (glucose). Cyclic voltammetry and capacitive measurements monitored the process of electropolymerization. Surface uncovered areas were plugged with 1-dodecanethiol to make the layer dense, and the insulating properties of the layer were studied in the presence of redox couples. The template molecules and the nonbound thiol were removed from the modified electrode surface by washing with distilled water. A capacitance decrease could be obtained after injection of glucose. The electrode constructed similarly but with ascorbic acid or fructose only showed a small response compared with glucose. The stability and reproducibility of the biosensor were also investigated. A series of novel nitrogen- and sulfur-containing conjugated polymers have been synthesized via an acid-induced self polycondensation of functional monomers with methyl sulfinyl group. They exhibit good solubility in common solvents, such as CHCl3, THF, DMF, DMSO, et al; and thus show excellent film-forming properties. They are used as hole-transport layer (HTL) in two-layer light-emitting diodes (ITO/polymer/Alq3/Mg:Ag). The typical turn-on voltage of these diodes is about 4 similar to 5V. The maximum brightness is about 3440cd/m(2) at 20 V. The maximum efficiency is estimated to be 0.15 Im/W at 10V.

Radiation crosslinking of polymers mainly depends on the structure of polymer chain. The flexibility and mobility of chain directly influence the possibility of the reactive radicals recombination. Flexible chain is easier to crosslink than rigid-chain polymer. The latter must be crosslinked at high temperature, as most polymers can only crosslink above their melting point. Structural effect also influences the mechanism of radiation crosslinking of polymers. We find from the results in literature and in our laboratory that, the flexibility chain polymer mainly crosslinked with H type, but the rigid chain polymer mainly crosslinked with Y type. A novel morphology of TPBD crystals consisting of a three-dimensional interlaced network was obtained by casting the self-seeded 0.1% benzene solution onto carbon-boated mica. Both the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) analyses showed that the network was composed of well-developed lamellae. It is imagined this interesting morphology is the results of asymmetrical growth of the original TPBD lamellae on the amorphous interface, and that their preferred orientation changed when they encountered each other.

Novel sodium sulfonate-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone)s derived from 4,4'-thiodiphenol with degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized by nucleophilic polycondensation of various amount of 5,5 '-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1) and 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone (2) with 4,4'-thiodipheno (3). Component and structure of the polymers were confirmed by TR, NMR and elemental analysis. Wide angle X-ray diffraction patterns indicated an amorphous structure of the polymers. All the polymers showed excellent thermal stability and poor solubility in water. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Poly(epsilon -caprolactone) (PCL) and silica (SiO2) organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been synthesized by the sol-gel method. The crystallization behavior of PCL in silica networks has been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The degree of PCL crystallinity in PCL/SiO2 hybrid networks reduces with increase of SiO2. PCL is in an amorphous state when the concentration of PCL is lower than 40wt% in the hybrid system. The melting point of PCL in the networks is lower than, but close to that of pure PCL. WAXD and SEM results show that the crystalline behavior of PCL in PCL/SiO2 hybrid system is strictly confined. The crystallization and phase transformation of amorphous Si3N4 ceramics under high pressure (1.0-5.0 GPa) between 800 and 1700 degreesC were investigated. A greatly enhanced crystallization and alpha-beta transformation of the amorphous Si3N4 ceramics were evident under the high pressure, as characterized by that, at 5.0 GPa, the amorphous Si3N4, began to crystallize at a temperature as low as 1000 degreesC (to transform to alpha modification). The subsequent alpha-beta transformation occurred completed between 1350 and 1420 degreesC after only 20 min of pressing at 5.0 GPa. In contrast, under 0.1 MPa N-2, the identical amorphous materials were stable up to 1400 degreesC without detectable crystallization, and only a small amount of a phase was detected at 1500 degreesC. The crystallization temperature and the alpha-beta transformation temperatures are reduced by 200-350 degreesC compared to that at normal pressure. The enhanced phase transformations of the amorphous Si3N4, were discussed on the basis of thermodynamic and kinetic consideration of the effects of pressure on nucleation and growth.
