On the decline of 1st and 2nd order sensitivity with eccentricity

We studied the relationship between the decline in sensitivity that occurs with eccentricity for stimuli of different spatial scale defined by either luminance (LM) or contrast (CM) modulation. We show that the detectability of CM stimuli declines with eccentricity in a spatial frequency-dependent manner, and that the rate of sensitivity decline for CM stimuli is roughly that expected from their 1st order carriers, except, possibly, at finer scales. Using an equivalent noise paradigm, we investigated the possible reasons for why the foveal sensitivity for detecting LM and CM stimuli differs as well as the reason why the detectability of 1st order stimuli declines with eccentricity. We show the former can be modeled by an increase in internal noise whereas the latter involves both an increase in internal noise and a loss of efficiency. To encompass both the threshold and suprathreshold transfer properties of peripheral vision, we propose a model in terms of the contrast gain of the underlying mechanisms.

IT as enabler of sustainable farming:an empirical analysis of farmers' adoption decision of precision agriculture technology

Precision agriculture (PA) describes a suite of IT based tools which allow farmers to electronically monitor soil and crop conditions and analyze treatment options. This study tests a model explaining the difficulties of PA technology adoption. The model draws on theories of technology acceptance and diffusion of innovation and is validated using survey data from farms in Canada. Findings highlight the importance of compatibility among PA technology components and the crucial role of farmers' expertise. The model provides the theoretical and empirical basis for developing policies and initiatives to support PA technology adoption.

Pyroligneous acid:a farmer’s flexible friend?

This article is a review of the findings of key studies into the potential benefits of pyroligneous acid, arising from charcoal production, to the agricultural industry. Through a review of bioassay studies conducted on known plant and human pathogens (e.g., Agrobacterium tumefacien and Xanthomonas campestris) and arthropods, and germination studies on selected crops, the article highlights a number of potential benefits of smoke recovery in the production of charcoal. In addition, the article calls for further research into the impact, if any, of its long-term use on environmental receptors/humans and for the development of a methodology to guarantee consistency in product composition, quality, and efficacy. In doing so, it is hoped that its widespread use as part of sustainable management practices adopted in the agricultural industry will be secured.
