Graphene has emerged as one of the strongest candidates for post-silicon technologies. One of the most important applications of graphene in the foreseeable future is sensing of particles of gas molecules, biomolecules or different chemicals or sensing of radiation of particles like alpha, gamma or cosmic particles. Several unique properties of graphene such as its extremely small thickness, very low mass, large surface to volume ratio, very high absorption coefficient, high mobility of charge carriers, high mechanical strength and high Young's modulus make it exceptionally suitable for making sensors. In this article we review the state-of-the-art in the application of graphene as a material and radiation detector, focusing on the current experimental status, challenges and the excitement ahead.

Recent experiments using three point bend specimens of Mg single crystals have revealed that tensile twins of {10 (1) over bar2}-type form profusely near a notch tip and enhance the fracture toughness through large plastic dissipation. In this work, 3D finite element simulations of these experiments are carried out using a crystal plasticity framework which includes slip and twinning to gain insights on the mechanics of fracture. The predicted load-displacement curves, slip and tensile twinning activities from finite element analysis corroborate well with the experimental observations. The numerical results are used to explore the 3D nature of the crack tip stress, plastic slip and twin volume fraction distributions near the notch root. The occurrence of tensile twinning is rationalized from the variation of normal stress ahead of the notch tip. Further, deflection of the crack path at twin-twin intersections observed in the experiments is examined from an energy standpoint by modeling discrete twins close to the notch root.

Mode I fracture experiments were conducted on brittle bulk metallic glass (BMG) samples and the fracture surface features were analyzed in detail to understand the underlying physical processes. Wollner lines, which result from the interaction between the propagating crack front and shear waves emanating from a secondary source, were observed on the fracture surface and geometric analysis of them indicates that the maximum crack velocity is similar to 800 m s(-1), which corresponds to similar to 0.32 times the shear wave speed. Fractography reveals that the sharp crack nucleation at the notch tip occurs at the mid-section of the specimens with the observation of flat and half-penny-shaped cracks. On this basis, we conclude that the crack initiation in brittle BMGs is stress-controlled and occurs through hydrostatic stress-assisted cavity nucleation ahead of the notch tip. High magnification scanning electron and atomic force microscopies of the dynamic crack growth regions reveal highly organized, nanoscale periodic patterns with a spacing of similar to 79 nm. Juxtaposition of the crack velocity with this spacing suggests that the crack takes similar to 10(-10) s for peak-to-peak propagation. This, and the estimated adiabatic temperature rise ahead of the propagating crack tip that suggests local softening, is utilized to critically discuss possible causes for the nanocorrugation formation. Taylor's fluid meniscus instability is unequivocally ruled out. Then, two other possible mechanisms, viz. (a) crack tip blunting and resharpening through nanovoid nucleation and growth ahead of the crack tip and eventual coalescence, and (b) dynamic oscillation of the crack in a thin slab of softened zone ahead of the crack-tip, are critically discussed. Streamflow forecasts at daily time scale are necessary for effective management of water resources systems. Typical applications include flood control, water quality management, water supply to multiple stakeholders, hydropower and irrigation systems. Conventionally physically based conceptual models and data-driven models are used for forecasting streamflows. Conceptual models require detailed understanding of physical processes governing the system being modeled. Major constraints in developing effective conceptual models are sparse hydrometric gauge network and short historical records that limit our understanding of physical processes. On the other hand, data-driven models rely solely on previous hydrological and meteorological data without directly taking into account the underlying physical processes. Among various data driven models Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are most widely used techniques. The present study assesses performance of ARIMA and ANNs methods in arriving at one-to seven-day ahead forecast of daily streamflows at Basantpur streamgauge site that is situated at upstream of Hirakud Dam in Mahanadi river basin, India. The ANNs considered include Feed-Forward back propagation Neural Network (FFNN) and Radial Basis Neural Network (RBNN). Daily streamflow forecasts at Basantpur site find use in management of water from Hirakud reservoir. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

In this work, Mode-I fracture experiments are conducted using notched compact tension specimens machined from a rolled AZ31 Mg alloy plate having near-basal texture with load applied along rolling direction (RD) and transverse direction (TD). Moderately high notched fracture toughness of J(C) similar to 46 N/mm is obtained in both RD and TD specimens. Fracture surface shows crack tunneling at specimen mid-thickness and extensive shear lips near the free surface. Dimples are observed from SEM fractographs suggesting ductile fracture. EBSD analysis shows profuse tensile twinning in the ligament ahead of the notch. It is shown that tensile twinning plays a dual role in enhancing the toughness in the notched fracture specimens with reduced triaxiality. It provides significant dissipation in the background plastic zone and imparts hardening to the material surrounding the fracture process zone via operation of several mechanisms which retards micro-void growth and coalescence. Eutectic growth offers a variety of examples for pattern formation which are interesting both for theoreticians as well as experimentalists. One such example of patterns is ternary eutectic colonies which arise as a result of instabilities during growth of two solid phases. Here, in addition to the two major components being exchanged between the solid phases during eutectic growth, there is an impurity component which is rejected by both solid phases. During progress of solidification, there develops a boundary layer of the third impurity component ahead of the solidification front of the two solid phases. Similar to Mullins-Sekerka type instabilities, such a boundary layer tends to make the global solidification envelope unstable to morphological perturbations giving rise to two-phase cells. This phenomenon has been studied numerically in two dimensions for the conditions of directional solidification, by Plapp and Karma (Phys Rev E 66:061608, 2002) using phase-field simulations. While, in the work by Plapp and Karma (Phys Rev E 66:061608, 2002) all interfaces are isotropic, in our presentation, we extend the phase-field model by considering interfacial anisotropy in the solid-solid and solid-liquid interfaces and characterize the role of interfacial anisotropy on the stability of the growth front through phase-field simulations in two dimensions.

This paper presents an analysis of crack problems in homogeneous piezoelectrics or on the interfaces between two dissimilar piezoelectric materials based on the continuity of normal electric displacement and electric potential across the crack faces. The explicit analytic solutions are obtained for a single crack in an infinite piezoelectric or on the interface of piezoelectric bimaterials. For homogeneous materials it is found that the normal electric displacement D-2, induced by the crack, is constant along the crack faces which depends only on the remote applied stress fields. Within the crack slit, the perturbed electric fields induced by the crack are also constant and not affected by the applied electric displacement fields. For bimaterials, generally speaking, an interface crack exhibits oscillatory behavior and the normal electric displacement D-2 is a complex function along the crack faces. However, for bimaterials, having certain symmetry, in which an interface crack displays no oscillatory behavior, it is observed that the normal electric displacement D-2 is also constant along the crack faces and the electric field E-2 has the singularity ahead of the crack tip and has a jump across the interface. Energy release rates are established for homogeneous materials and bimaterials having certain symmetry. Both the crack front parallel to the poling axis and perpendicular to the poling axis are discussed. It is revealed that the energy release rates are always positive for stable materials and the applied electric displacements have no contribution to the energy release rates.

This paper presents a fully anisotropic analysis of strip electric saturation model proposed by Gao et al. (1997) (Gao, H.J., Zhang, T.Y., Tong, P., 1997. Local and global energy release rates for an electrically yielded crack in a piezoelectric ceramic. J. Mech. Phys. Solids, 45, 491-510) for piezoelectric materials. The relationship between the size of the strip saturation zone ahead of a crack tip and the applied electric displacement field is established. It is revealed that the critical fracture stresses for a crack perpendicular to the poling axis is linearly decreased with the increase of the positive applied electric field and increases linearly with the increase of the negative applied electric field. For a crack parallel to the poring axis, the failure stress is not effected by the parallel applied electric field. In order to analyse the existed experimental results, the stress fields ahead of the tip of an elliptic notch in an infinite piezoelectric solid are calculated. The critical maximum stress criterion is adopted for determining the fracture stresses under different remote electric displacement fields. The present analysis indicates that the crack initiation and propagation from the tip of a sharp elliptic notch could be aided or impeded by an electric displacement field depending on the field direction. The fracture stress predicted by the present analysis is consistent with the experimental data given by Park and Sun (1995) (Park, S., Sun, C.T., 1995. Fracture criteria for piezoelectric materials. J. Am. Ceram. Soc 78, 1475-1480).

The dislocation simulation method is used in this paper to derive the basic equations for a crack perpendicular to the bimaterial interface in a finite solid. The complete solutions to the problem, including the T stress and the stress intensity factors are obtained. The stress field characteristics are investigated in detail. It is found that when the crack is within a weaker material, the stress intensity factor is smaller than that in a homogeneous material and it decreases when the distance between the crack tip and interface decreases. When the crack is within a stiffer material, the stress intensity factor is larger than that in a homogeneous material and it increases when the distance between the crack tip and interface decreases. In both cases, the stress intensity factor will increase when the ratio of the size of a sample to the crack length decreases. A comparison of stress intensity factors between a finite problem and an infinite problem has been given also. The stress distribution ahead of the crack tip, which is near the interface, is shown in details and the T stress effect is considered.

A new compatible finite element method for strain gradient theories is presented. In the new finite element method, pure displacement derivatives are taken as the fundamental variables. The new numerical method is successfully used to analyze the simple strain gradient problems – the fundamental fracture problems. Through comparing the numerical solutions with the existed exact solutions, the effectiveness of the new finite element method is tested and confirmed. Additionally, an application of the Zienkiewicz–Taylor C1 finite element method to the strain gradient problem is discussed. By using the new finite element method, plane-strain mode I and mode II crack tip fields are calculated based on a constitutive law which is a simple generalization of the conventional J2 deformation plasticity theory to include strain gradient effects. Three new constitutive parameters enter to characterize the scale over which strain gradient effects become important. During the analysis the general compressible version of Fleck–Hutchinson strain gradient plasticity is adopted. Crack tip solutions, the traction distributions along the plane ahead of the crack tip are calculated. The solutions display the considerable elevation of traction within the zone near the crack tip.

Using dislocation simulation approach, the basic equation for a finite crack perpendicular to and terminating at a bimaterial interface is formulated. A novel expansion method is proposed for solving the problem. The complete solution to the problem, including the explicit formulae for the T stresses ahead of the crack tip and the stress intensity factors are presented. The stress held characteristics are analysed in detail. It is found that normal stresses sigma(x) and sigma(y) ahead of the crack tip, are characterised by Q fields if the crack is within a stiff material and the parameters \p(T)\ and \q(T)\ are very small, where Q is a generalised stress intensity factor for a crack normal to and terminating at the interface. If the crack is within a weak material, the normal stresses sigma(x) and sigma(y) are dominated by the Q field plus T stress.

In this paper, a new phenomenological theory with strain gradient effects is proposed to account for the size dependence of plastic deformation at micro- and submicro-length scales. The theory fits within the framework of general couple stress theory and three rotational degrees of freedom omega(i) are introduced in addition to the conventional three translational degrees of freedom mu(i). omega(i) is called micro-rotation and is the sum of material rotation plus the particles' relative rotation. While the new theory is used to analyze the crack tip field or the indentation problems, the stretch gradient is considered through a new hardening law. The key features of the theory are that the rotation gradient influences the material character through the interaction between the Cauchy stresses and the couple stresses; the term of stretch gradient is represented as an internal variable to increase the tangent modulus. In fact the present new strain gradient theory is the combination of the strain gradient theory proposed by Chen and Wang (Int. J. Plast., in press) and the hardening law given by Chen and Wang (Acta Mater. 48 (2000a) 3997). In this paper we focus on the finite element method to investigate material fracture for an elastic-power law hardening solid. With remotely imposed classical K fields, the full field solutions are obtained numerically. It is found that the size of the strain gradient dominance zone is characterized by the intrinsic material length l(1). Outside the strain gradient dominance zone, the computed stress field tends to be a classical plasticity field and then K field. The singularity of stresses ahead of the crack tip is higher than that of the classical field and tends to the square root singularity, which has important consequences for crack growth in materials by decohesion at the atomic scale. In this paper, the strain gradient theory proposed by Chen and Wang (2001 a, 2002b) is used to analyze an interface crack tip field at micron scales. Numerical results show that at a distance much larger than the dislocation spacing the classical continuum plasticity is applicable; but the stress level with the strain gradient effect is significantly higher than that in classical plasticity immediately ahead of the crack tip. The singularity of stresses in the strain gradient theory is higher than that in HRR field and it slightly exceeds or equals to the square root singularity and has no relation with the material hardening exponents. Several kinds of interface crack fields are calculated and compared. The interface crack tip field between an elastic-plastic material and a rigid substrate is different from that between two elastic-plastic solids. This study provides explanations for the crack growth in materials by decohesion at the atomic scale.

Simple process models are applied to predict microstructural changes due to the thermal cycle imposed in friction stir welding. A softening model developed for heat-treatable aluminium alloys of the 6000 series is applied to the aerospace alloy 2014 in the peak-aged (T6) condition. It is found that the model is not readily applicable to alloy 2024 in the naturally aged (T3) temper, but the softening behaviour can still be described semi-empirically. Both analytical and numerical (finite element) thermal models are used to predict the thermal histories in trial welds. These are coupled to the microstructural model to investigate: (a) the hardness profile across the welded plate; (b) alloy softening ahead of the approaching welding tool. By incorporating the softening model applied to 6082-T6 alloy, the hardness profile of friction stir welds in dissimilar alloys is also predicted. © AFM, EDP Sciences 2005.
