Aquest projecte tracta sobre la relació entre germans quan un d’ells és discapacitat. Podríem dir que la relació que s’estableix entre ells és “especial”? Aquesta ha estat la pregunta que m’ha portat a estudiar els diferents factors que influeixen en una relació d’aquest tipus. Per tal de poder comprovar el que diuen els estudis fets fins al moment, he analitzat dos casos, tots dos amb contextos molt diferenciats, i n’he tret unes conclusions amb la finalitat de respondre a la pregunta inicial. Quan hi ha un fill amb discapacitat a la família, l’atenció que aquest requereix és tan gran que sovint els germans tenen la sensació de sentir-se inferiors, culpables, etc. A tots aquests sentiments cal prestar-hi certa atenció de manera que la situació no els sigui negativa. Els tallers de germans, organitzats per associacions i escoles especialitzades amb el tema, contribueixen a treballar amb tots aquests germans, els sentiments i les emocions i així enfortir el vincle entre germans.

Actualment s’està donant molt pes al fet d’incloure dins l’aula a tot aquell alumnat amb necessitats educatives especials per tal de fomentar la inclusió. Aquest fet i com a persona que visc el dia a dia amb persones amb diversitat funcional ha fet que hem plantegi molts dubtes i reptes sobre la inclusió. Així doncs, vaig pensar que seria interessant observar, descriure i analitzar com viu un infant amb diversitat funcional la seva escolarització dins una aula ordinària i dins una aula d’educació especial. La principal participant de la investigació ha estat la Laia, una nena de 10 anys la qual realitza escolarització compartida. La seva família i les tutores dels dos centres han col·laborat en la investigació aportant informació. El mètode utilitzat per a la investigació ha estat una recerca qualitativa a partir de l’anàlisi d’un estudi de cas utilitzant les entrevistes amb la família i els tutors de la Laia, l’observació de Laia dins l’horari escolar i les notes de camp com a instruments de recollida de dades. Com a conclusions pensem que la inclusió d’aquells infants amb diversitat funcional dins l’aula ordinària és molt important ja que els ajuda a viure en un àmbit amb total normalitat i fomenta el respecte de la gent que els envolta. Cal fomentar les situacions d’inclusió amb l’ús d’estratègies com poden ser el treball cooperatiu o establint bones relacions amb la gent que els envolta.

Benzodiazepine (BDZ), a widely recognized first-line status epilepticus (SE) treatment, may lead to respiratory depression. This cohort study investigates the effect of BDZ doses in SE patients in terms of morbidity and mortality. It considers incident SE episodes from a prospective registry (2009-2012), comparing patients receiving standard BDZ dose to those receiving exceeding doses (>30% above recommended dose), in terms of likelihood to receive intubation, morbidity, and mortality. Duration of hospitalization was assessed for subjects needing intubation for airways protection (not for refractory SE treatment) versus matched subjects not admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). We identified 29 subjects receiving "excessive" and 173 "standard" BDZ dose; 45% of the overtreated patients were intubated for airways protection, but only 8% in the standard-dose group (p < 0.001). However, both groups presented similar clinical outcomes: 50% returned to baseline, 40% acquired a new handicap, and 10% died. Orotracheal intubation due to airways protection was associated with significantly longer hospitalization (mean 2 weeks vs. 1 week, p = 0.008). In conclusion, although administration of excessive BDZ doses in SE treatment does not seem to influence outcome, it is related to higher respiratory depression risk and longer hospitalization, potentially exposing patients to additional complications and costs.

Prepositional phrases are the commonest kind of postmodification in all registers of English (Biber et al. 1999: 634). The locative ones that can be expanded into a defining relative clause (the books [which are] on the table) are usually expressed by such a construction in Spanish (los libros que están encima de la mesa) or by a phrase introduced by de (los libros de encima de la mesa). Wonder (1979) argues that Spanish allows locative phrases with prepositions other than de in the case of"situaciones"activas"" (el aterrizaje en pleno campo) as against"situaciones estáticas" (*el sofá en la sala), and if the phrase can be given an adverbial rather than, or in addition to, an adjectival interpretation (el ruido en la calle), especially if that phrase implies an alternative location for an object or contrast with another similar object (el sofá en la sala contigua). This paper further investigates this claim and looks at Spanish equivalents of English postmodifying prepositional phrases in general, while proposing an explanation for the choice of these different structures in Spanish based on considerations of lexical density. Resumen: Las frases preposicionales constituyen el tipo más frecuente de posmodificación en todos los registros del inglés (Biber et a. 1999: 634). En el español, las expresiones locativas suelen incorporar un pronombre relativo y un verbo (the books [which are] on the table > los libros que están encima de la mesa), o bien expresarse mediante una frase introducida por la preposición de (los libros de encima de la mesa). Wonder (1979) sostiene que el español permite el uso de preposiciones que no sean de en las frases locativas en el caso de"situaciones"activas"" (el aterrizaje en pleno campo) frente a"situaciones estáticas" (*el sofá en la sala), y también si la frase puede tener una función adverbial antes que, o además de, una interpretación adjetiva (el ruido en la calle), sobre todo si dicha frase encierra la idea de una posición alternativa para un objeto, o bien un contraste con otro objeto similar (el sofá en la sala contigua). The Iowa DOT has been using the "Iowa Method" thin bonded low-slump dense Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) bridge deck overlay for rehabilitation of delaminated decks since 1963. In time, continued use of studded tires will wear away the transverse grooved texture. The objective of this research was to evaluate the benefit of incorporating a hard durable aggregate into a dense PCC overlay to provide frictional property longevity. The project included three overlays on I-35 near Ankeny. The texture and friction properties of two overlays, one constructed with crushed granite and the other with crushed quartzite coarse aggregate, were compared to an overlay constructed with locally available crushed limestone. There were no construction problems resulting from the use of crushed granite or quartzite. There was no significant frictional property benefit from the crushed granite or crushed quartzite through six years.

In the administration, planning, design, and maintenance of road systems, transportation professionals often need to choose between alternatives, justify decisions, evaluate tradeoffs, determine how much to spend, set priorities, assess how well the network meets traveler needs, and communicate the basis for their actions to others. A variety of technical guidelines, tools, and methods have been developed to help with these activities. Such work aids include design criteria guidelines, design exception analysis methods, needs studies, revenue allocation schemes, regional planning guides, designation of minimum standards, sufficiency ratings, management systems, point based systems to determine eligibility for paving, functional classification, and bridge ratings. While such tools play valuable roles, they also manifest a number of deficiencies and are poorly integrated. Design guides tell what solutions MAY be used, they aren't oriented towards helping find which one SHOULD be used. Design exception methods help justify deviation from design guide requirements but omit consideration of important factors. Resource distribution is too often based on dividing up what's available rather than helping determine how much should be spent. Point systems serve well as procedural tools but are employed primarily to justify decisions that have already been made. In addition, the tools aren't very scalable: a system level method of analysis seldom works at the project level and vice versa. In conjunction with the issues cited above, the operation and financing of the road and highway system is often the subject of criticisms that raise fundamental questions: What is the best way to determine how much money should be spent on a city or a county's road network? Is the size and quality of the rural road system appropriate? Is too much or too little money spent on road work? What parts of the system should be upgraded and in what sequence? Do truckers receive a hidden subsidy from other motorists? Do transportation professions evaluate road situations from too narrow of a perspective? In considering the issues and questions the author concluded that it would be of value if one could identify and develop a new method that would overcome the shortcomings of existing methods, be scalable, be capable of being understood by the general public, and utilize a broad viewpoint. After trying out a number of concepts, it appeared that a good approach would be to view the road network as a sub-component of a much larger system that also includes vehicles, people, goods-in-transit, and all the ancillary items needed to make the system function. Highway investment decisions could then be made on the basis of how they affect the total cost of operating the total system. A concept, named the "Total Cost of Transportation" method, was then developed and tested. The concept rests on four key principles: 1) that roads are but one sub-system of a much larger 'Road Based Transportation System', 2) that the size and activity level of the overall system are determined by market forces, 3) that the sum of everything expended, consumed, given up, or permanently reserved in building the system and generating the activity that results from the market forces represents the total cost of transportation, and 4) that the economic purpose of making road improvements is to minimize that total cost. To test the practical value of the theory, a special database and spreadsheet model of Iowa's county road network was developed. This involved creating a physical model to represent the size, characteristics, activity levels, and the rates at which the activities take place, developing a companion economic cost model, then using the two in tandem to explore a variety of issues. Ultimately, the theory and model proved capable of being used in full system, partial system, single segment, project, and general design guide levels of analysis. The method appeared to be capable of remedying many of the existing work method defects and to answer society's transportation questions from a new perspective.
