The triatomic spin-rovibronic variational code RVIB3 has been extended to include the effect of two uncoupled electrons, for both (3)Sigma(-) and (3)Pi (Renner-Teller) electronic states. The spin-orbital-rotational kinetic energy is included in the usual way, via terms (J+L+S). The phenomenological terms AL.S and lambda 2/3(3S(z)(2)) are introduced to reproduce the 3 spin-orbit and spin-spin splittings, respectively. Calculations are performed to evaluate the spin-rovibronic energy levels of CCO (X) over tilde (3) Sigma(-) and CCO (A) over tilde (3) Pi for which the Born-Oppenheimer potentials are derived from high-accuracy ab initio calculations.

First-principles calculations of absolute line intensities and rovibrational energies of ozone (O-16(3)) are reported using potential energy and electric dipole moment functions calculated by the internally contracted MRCI approach. The rovibrational energies and eigenfunctions (up to about 8500 cm(-1) and J = 64) were obtained variationally with an exact Hamiltonian in internal valence coordinates. More than 4.8 x 10(6) electric dipole transition matrix elements were calculated for the absolute rovibrational line intensities. They are compared with the values of the HITRAN database. The purely rotational absolute line intensities in the (000) state and the rovibrational intensities for the (001)-(000) band agree to within about 0.3 to 1% for the (0 10)-(000) band to within about 3 to 4%. Excellent agreement with experiment is also achieved for low-lying overtone and combination bands. Inconsistencies are found for the (100)-(000) band overlapping with the antisymmetric stretching fundamental and also for the (002)-(000) antisymmetric stretching overtone. The generated dipole moment function can be used for predicting the absorption intensities in any of the heavier isotopomers, hot bands or the rates of spontaneous emission.

We have favoured the variational (secular equation) method for the determination of the (ro-) vibrational energy levels of polyatomic molecules. We use predominantly the Watson Hamiltonian in normal coordinates and an associated given potential in the variational code 'Multimode'. The dominant cost is the construction and diagonalization of matrices of ever-increasing size. Here we address this problem, using pertubation theory to select dominant expansion terms within the Davidson-Liu iterative diagonalization method. Our chosen example is the twelve-mode molecule methanol, for which we have an ab initio representation of the potential which includes the internal rotational motion of the OH group relative to CH3. Our new algorithm allows us to obtain converged energy levels for matrices of dimensions in excess of 100 000.

The vibrational-rotational energy levels of aluminum monohydroxide in its electronic ground state, (A) over tilde (1)A' AlOH, have been predicted using the variational method. The potential energy surface of the (X) over tilde (1)A' ground state of AlOH was determined employing the ab initio coupled cluster method with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)] and the correlation-consistent polarized valence quadruple zeta (cc-pVQZ) basis set. Low-lying J= 0 and J= 1 vibrational levels are reported. These are analyzed in terms of the quasilinearity of the molecule. Coriolis effects are shown to be significant. We hope that our predictions will be of value in the future when assigning rovibrational transitions in spectroscopic studies. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Propylene polymerization using salicyladiminato metal catalalysts has been studied using density functional theory at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level. In particular, the effects on the reaction mechanisms of changing the metal from Pd(II) to Ni(II) have been investigated. While the reaction mechanisms involving the salicyladiminato Ni(II) catalyst have been found to be similar to those established previously for the salicyladiminato Pd(II) catalyst, the nickel catalyst was found to differentiate the trans-O intermediate from the trans-.N intermediate with an energy difference of 46.63 U mol(-1) significantly more than the palladium catalyst for which the energy difference was calculated as 35.82 kJ mol(-1). The energy difference between the trans-O configuration and the trans-N configuration is decreased significantly when combining a molecule of propylene with the catalyst. For the Ni catalyst, the trans-O isomer is more stable than the trans-N isomer to a greater extent than for Pd, so that the insertion of propylene from 20 is relatively less favoured for Ni than for Pd. It is predicted that the mechanism of isomerization from 20 to 2N through a rotational transition state TS2O2N is more appropriate for the Ni catalyst system. The palladium system shows a larger preference for pi-coordination than its nickel counterpart, although the latter possesses a lower reaction barrier. It was found that the occupation of the trans-O position in the asymmetric salicyladiminato catalyst is also more favored by the alkene as it is by the alkyl so that insertion of the alkene may always start from a particular configuration so that specific products are obtained. An experimental technique based on a scheme of vibrationally mediated photodissociation has been developed and applied to the spectroscopic study of highly excited vibrational states in HCN, with energies between 29 000 and 30 000 cm(-1). The technique consists of four sequential steps: in the first one, a high power laser is used to vibrationally excite the sample to an intermediate state, typically (0,0,4), the nu(3) mode being approximately equivalent to the C-H stretching vibration. Then a second laser is used to search for transitions between this intermediate state and highly vibrationally excited states. When one of these transitions is found, HCN molecules are transferred to a highly excited vibrational state. Third, a ultraviolet laser photodissociates the highly excited molecules to produce H and CN radicals in its A (2)Pi electronic state. Finally, a fourth laser (probe) detects the presence of the CN(A) photofragments by means of an A-->B-->X laser induced fluorescence scheme. The spectra obtained with this technique, consisting of several rotationally resolved vibrational bands, have been analyzed. The positions and rotational parameters of the states observed are presented and compared with the results of a state-of-the-art variational calculation. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

This article describes the analysis and interpretation of rovibrational spectra involving highly excited vibrational states in the molecule of HCN. The spectra were obtained by means of the vibrationally mediated photodissociation technique. Analysis of the spectra revealed four bands with Sigma-Sigma structures that, once fitted, provided the energies and rotational constants of four new, highly excited vibrational states in the region of the potential energy surface near and above 30 000 cm(-1). All the states could be identified with the help of a state-of-the-art variational calculation. Together with the states already observed in previous works, eight highly excited states have so far been identified in this region. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Currently microporous oxidic materials including zeolites are attracting interest as potential hydrogen storage materials. Understanding how molecular hydrogen interacts with these materials is important in the rational development of hydrogen storage materials and is also challenging theoretically. In this paper, we present an incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of the adsorption of molecular hydrogen and hydrogen deuteride (HD) in a copper substituted ZSM5 zeolite varying the hydrogen dosage and temperature. We have demonstrated how inelastic neutron scattering can help us understand the interaction of H-2 molecules with a binding site in a particular microporous material, Cu ZSM5, and by implication of other similar materials. The H-2 molecule is bound as a single species lying parallel with the surface. As H-2 dosing increases, lateral interactions between the adsorbed H-2 molecules become apparent. With rising temperature of measurement up to 70 K (the limit of our experiments), H-2 molecules remain bound to the surface equivalent to a liquid or solid H-2 phase. The implication is that hydrogen is bound rather strongly in Cu ZSM5. Using the simple model for the anisotropic interaction to calculate the energy levels splitting, we found that the measured rotational constant of the hydrogen molecule is reduced as a consequence of adsorption by the Cu ZSM5. From the decrease in total signal intensity with increasing temperature, we were able to observe the conversion of para-hydrogen into ortho-hydrogen at paramagnetic centres and so determine the fraction of paramagnetic sites occupied by hydrogen molecules, ca. 60%. An inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of the rotational - vibrational spectrum of dihydrogen sorbed by zeolite X having substituted sodium, calcium and zinc cations is reported. The rotational - vibrational spectrum of H-2 was observed at low energy transfer ( below ca. 25 meV, 202 cm(-1)); the vibration was that of the H-2 molecule against the binding site (H-2 - X, not H - H). The vibration frequency was proportional to the polarising power of the cation (Na+ < Ca2+ < Zn2+). Polarisation of the H-2 molecule dominated the interaction of H-2 with this binding site. The total scattering intensity was proportional to the dihydrogen dose. However the vibrational intensities became constant at ca. 0.3 wt% showing that the H-2 binding sites had saturated. Additional dihydrogen appeared as unbound or weakly bound dihydrogen exhibiting recoil.

We report an inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of the rotational–vibrational spectrum of dihydrogen sorbed by zeolite CaX. In the low energy (<200 cm−1) INS spectrum of adsorbed H2 we observe the rotational–vibrational spectrum of H2, where the vibration is that of the H2 molecule against the binding site (i.e. H2–X, not H–H). We have observed for the first time the vibrational overtones of the hydrogen molecule against the adsorption surface up to sixth order. These vibrations are usually forbidden in INS spectroscopy because of the selection rules imposed by the spin flip event required. In our case we are able to observe such a vibration because the rotational transition J(1 ← 0) convolutes the vibrational spectrum. This paper reports the effect for the first time.

Oil rig mooring lines have traditionally consisted of chain and wire rope. As production has moved into deeper water it has proved advantageous to incorporate sections of fibre rope into the mooring lines. However, this has highlighted torsional interaction problems that can occur when ropes of different types are joined together. This paper describes a method by which the torsional properties of ropes can be modelled and can then be used to calculate the rotation and torque for two ropes connected in series. The method uses numerical representations of the torsional characteristics of both the ropes, and equates the torque generated in each rope under load to determine the rotation at the connection point. Data from rope torsional characterization tests have been analysed to derive constants used in the numerical model. Constants are presented for: a six-strand wire rope; a torque-balanced fibre rope; and a fibre rope that has been designed to be torque-matched to stranded wire rope. The calculation method has been verified by comparing predicted rotations with measured test values. Worked examples are given for a six-strand wire rope connected, firstly, to a torque-balanced fibre rope that offers little rotational restraint, and, secondly, to a fibre rope whose torsional properties are matched to that of the wire rope.

Cercal hairs represent in cricket a wind sensitive escape system, able to detect the airflow generated from predating species. These sensors have been studied as a biomimetic concept to allow the development of MEMS for biomedical use. In particular, the behaviour of the hairs, including airflow response, resonant frequency and damping, has been investigated up to a frequency of 20 kHz. The microscopic nature of the hairs, the complex vibrations of excited hairs and the high damping of the system suggested that the use of Laser Doppler vibrometry could possibly improve the test performance. Two types of tests were performed: in the first case the hairs were indirectly excited using the signal obtained from a vibrating aluminium plate, whilst in the second case the hairs were directly excited using a white noise chirp. The results from the first experiment indicated that the hairs move in-phase with the exciting signal up to frequencies in the order of 10 kHz, responding to the vibration modes of the plate with a signal attenuation of 12 to 20 dB. The chirp experiment revealed the presence of rotational resonant modes at 6850 and 11300 Hz. No clear effect of hair length was perceivable on the vibration response of the filiform sensors. The obtained results proved promising to support the mechanical and vibration characterisation of the hairs and suggest that scanning Laser vibrometry can be used extensively on highly dampened biological materials.

This paper presents a novel actuator design that ameliorates or eliminates the effects of non-linearities that are characteristically present in geared actuator systems and which are very problematic for low velocity applications. The design centres on the providing an internal rotational element within a single actuator to ensure operation of actuator away from the stiction region, whilst allowing zero velocity external output of the actuator. The construction has the added advantage of substantially reducing backlash. The prototype comprises two commercially available servo-actuators to test the principle of operation and results presented indicate that the concept is worth exploring further.
