Spherical carbon coated iron particles of nanometric diameter in the 510 nm range have been produced by arc discharge at near-atmospheric pressure conditions (using 58·10 4 Pa of He). The particles exhibit a crystalline dense iron core with an average diameter 7.4 ± 2.0 nm surrounded by a sealed carbon shell, shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area diffrac- tion (SAED), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (STEM-EDX) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The SAED, EDX and EELS results indicate a lack of traces of core oxidized phases showing an efficient protection role of the carbon shell. The magnetic properties of the nanoparticles have been investigated in the 5300 K temperature range using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The results reveal a superparamagnetic behaviour with an average monodomain diameter of 7.6 nm of the nanoparticles. The zero field cooled and field cooled (ZFC-FC)magnetization curves show a blocking temperature (TB)at room temperature very suitable for biomedical applications (drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging MRI, hyperthermia).

In this book, the authors present current research in the study of health behavior. Topics discussed include the role of fitness classes in the development of eating disorders among women; first year university female students' lifestyles and attitudes towards health risk and preventive measures; an examination of the extensive cross-sectional and longitudinal evidence that links traditional screen-time to pediatric obesity; gender issue implications on health; and health promotion messages used to inform the population about important health issues and to motivate individuals to adopt healthy behaviors and avoid unhealthy behaviors. Monodispersed colloidal crystals based on silica sub-micrometric particles were synthesized using the Stöber-Fink-Bohn process. The control of nucleation and coalescence result in improved characteristics such as high sphericity and very low size dispersion. The resulting silica particles show characteristics suitable for self-assembling across large areas of closely-packed 2D crystal monolayers by an accurate Langmuir-Blodgett deposition process on glass, fused silica and silicon substrates. Due to their special optical properties, colloidal films have potential applications in fields including photonics, electronics, electro-optics, medicine (detectors and sensors), membrane filters and surface devices. The deposited monolayers of silica particles were characterized by means of FESEM, AFM and optical transmittance measurements in order to analyze their specific properties and characteristics. We propose a theoretical calculation for the photonic band gaps in 2D systems using an extrapolation of the photonic behavior of the crystal from 3D to 2D. In this work we show that the methodology used and the conditions in self-assembly processes are decisive for producing high-quality two-dimensional colloidal crystals by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique.

The "Yearbook of Private International Law" provides all about the conflict of laws developments of 2012 and 2013 in one book: Volume XIV (2012/2013) includes contributions on the proposed codification of the General Part of Private International Law in Europe, on the reform of the Chinese legal system as well as on defamation and violation of personality rights (the latter in a whole section). Furthermore, the book deals with the application of EU legislation on jurisdiction and enforcement of judgements, the recognition of judgements overturned by another judgement, and the conflict of decisions in international arbitration. Reports and court decisions from the Netherlands, Turkey, India, Finland, Croatia and Switzerland and a summary of two dissertations on the role of sovereignty and choice of courts agreements complete the book.

AB Summary: Steady state concentrations of (S)- and (R)-mianserin and desmethylmianserin were measured in 21 homozygous extensive metabolizers (as determined by genotyping for mutations 3 [or A] and 4 [or B]), in seven heterozygous extensive metabolizers and in one poor metabolizer of debrisoquine, as well as in one patient receiving very high doses of mianserin (360 mg/day) and fluoxetine (160 mg/day), a strong cytochrome P450IID6 inhibitor. The mean dose of mianserin was (mean +/- SD, range: 67 +/- 63, 10 to 360 mg/day). High dispersions of the (S)/(R)-mianserin and desmethylmianserin ratios were observed (mean +/- SD, range: 2.10+/- 1.01, 0.64 to 4.76, and 0.29 +/- 0.14, 0.08 to 0.57, respectively). The highest (S)/(R)-mianserin ratio was calculated for the poor metabolizer (4.76) agreeing with those results of a single-dose study with poor and extensive metabolizers of debrisoquine, in that the cytochrome P450IID6 is probably involved in the metabolism of mianserin with an enantioselectivity for the (S)-enantiomer. Nevertheless, the mean concentration-to-dose ratios for (S)- or (R)-mianserin or desmethylmianserin were not significantly different between homozygous and heterozygous extensive metabolizers, and no particular values were measured in the poor metabolizer nor in the patient receiving fluoxetine. Furthermore, the(S)/(R)-mianserin ratio measured in the PM was only slightly higher than the second highest ratio (3.85) of an homozygous extensive metabolizer, whereas no particular value (2.92) was calculated for the patient taking fluoxetine. Finally, no significant differences in (S)/(R)-mianserin or(S)/(R)-desmethylmianserin were calculated between homozygous and heterozygous extensive metabolizers. Although the number of patients included in this study is too low to allow definite conclusions, the results suggest that the debrisoquine genotype has only a moderate influence on the steady state concentrations of the enantiomers of mianserin and desmethylmianserin. Males of plants with separate sexes are often more prone to attack by herbivores than females. A common explanation for this pattern is that individuals with a greater male function suffer more from herbivory because they grow more quickly, drawing more heavily on resources for growth that might otherwise be allocated to defence. Here, we test this 'faster-sex' hypothesis in a species in which males in fact grow more slowly than hermaphrodites, the wind-pollinated annual herb Mercurialis annua. We expected greater herbivory in the faster-growing hermaphrodites. In contrast, we found that males, the slower sex, were significantly more heavily eaten by snails than hermaphrodites. Our results thus reject the faster-sex hypothesis and point to the importance of a trade-off between defence and reproduction rather than growth.

Notwithstanding the functional role that the aggregates of some amyloidogenic proteins can play in different organisms, protein aggregation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of a large number of human diseases. One of such diseases is Alzheimer"s disease (AD), where the overproduction and aggregation of the β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) are regarded as early critical factors. Another protein that seems to occupy a prominent position within the complex pathological network of AD is the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE), with classical and non-classical activities involved at the late (cholinergic deficit) and early (Aβ aggregation) phases of the disease. Dual inhibitors of Aβ aggregation and AChE are thus emerging as promising multi-target agents with potential to efficiently modify the natural course of AD. In the initial phases of the drug discovery process of such compounds, in vitro evaluation of the inhibition of Aβ aggregation is rather troublesome, as it is very sensitive to experimental assay conditions, and requires expensive synthetic Aβ peptides, which makes cost-prohibitive the screening of large compound libraries. Herein, we review recently developed multi-target anti-Alzheimer compounds that exhibit both Aβ aggregation and AChE inhibitory activities, and, in some cases also additional valuable activities such as BACE-1 inhibition or antioxidant properties. We also discuss the development of simplified in vivo methods for the rapid, simple, reliable, unexpensive, and high-throughput amenable screening of Aβ aggregation inhibitors that rely on the overexpression of Aβ42 alone or fused with reporter proteins in Escherichia coli.
