Arabian Sea Mini Warm Pool (ASMWP) is a part of the Indian Ocean Warm Pool and formed in the eastern Arabian Sea prior to the onset of the summer monsoon season. This warm pool attained its maximum intensity during the pre-monsoon season and dissipated with the commencement of summer monsoon. The main focus of the present work was on the triggering of the dissipation of this warm pool and its relation to the onset of summer monsoon over Kerala. This phenomenon was studied utilizing NCEP/NCAR (National Center for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric and Research) re-analysis data, TRMM Micro wave Imager (TMI) and observational data. To define the ASMWP, sea surface temperature exceeding 30.25A degrees C was taken as the criteria. The warm pool attained its maximum dimension and intensity nearly 2 weeks prior to the onset of summer monsoon over Kerala. Interestingly, the warm pool started its dissipation immediately after attaining its maximum core temperature. This information can be included in the present numerical models to enhance the prediction capability. It was also found that the extent and intensity of the ASMWP varied depending on the type of monsoon i.e., excess, normal, and deficient monsoon. Maximum core temperature and wide coverage of the warm pool observed during the excess monsoon years compared to normal and deficient monsoon years. The study also revealed a strong relationship between the salinity in the eastern Arabian Sea and the nature of the monsoon.

Laminar forced convection heat transfer from two-dimensional sudden expansion flow of different nanofluids is studied numerically. The governing equations are solved using the unsteady stream function-vorticity method. The effect of volume fraction of the nanoparticles and type of nanoparticles on heat transfer is examined and found to have a significant impact. Local and average Nusselt numbers are reported in connection with various nanoparticle, volume fraction, and Reynolds number for expansion ratio 2. The Nusselt number reaches peak values near the reattachment point and reaches asymptotic value in the downstream. Bottom wall eddy and volume fraction shows a significant impact on the average Nusselt number.

As an example of a front propagation, we study the propagation of a three-dimensional nonlinear wavefront into a polytropic gas in a uniform state and at rest. The successive positions and geometry of the wavefront are obtained by solving the conservation form of equations of a weakly nonlinear ray theory. The proposed set of equations forms a weakly hyperbolic system of seven conservation laws with an additional vector constraint, each of whose components is a divergence-free condition. This constraint is an involution for the system of conservation laws, and it is termed a geometric solenoidal constraint. The analysis of a Cauchy problem for the linearized system shows that when this constraint is satisfied initially, the solution does not exhibit any Jordan mode. For the numerical simulation of the conservation laws we employ a high resolution central scheme. The second order accuracy of the scheme is achieved by using MUSCL-type reconstructions and Runge-Kutta time discretizations. A constrained transport-type technique is used to enforce the geometric solenoidal constraint. The results of several numerical experiments are presented, which confirm the efficiency and robustness of the proposed numerical method and the control of the Jordan mode.

South peninsular India experiences a large portion of the annual rainfall during the northeast monsoon season (October to December). In this study, the facets of diurnal, intra-seasonal and inter-annual variability of the northeast monsoon rainfall (the NEMR) over India have been examined. The analysis of satellite derived hourly rainfall reveals that there are distinct features of diurnal variation over the land and oceans during the season. Over the land, rainfall peaks during the late afternoon/evening, while over the oceans an early morning peak is observed. The harmonic analysis of hourly data reveals that the amplitude and variance are the largest over south peninsular India. The NEMR also exhibits significant intra-seasonal variability on a 20-40 day time scale. Analysis also shows significant northward propagation of the maximum cloud zone from south of equator to the south peninsula during the season. The NEMR exhibits large inter-annual variability with the co-efficient of variation (CV) of 25%. The positive phases of ENSO and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are conducive for normal to above normal rainfall activity during the northeast monsoon. There are multi-decadal variations in the statistical relationship between ENSO and the NEMR. During the period 2001-2010 the statistical relationship between ENSO and the NEMR has significantly weakened. The analysis of seasonal rainfall hindcasts for the period 1960-2005 produced by the state-of-the-art coupled climate models, ENSEMBLES, reveals that the coupled models have very poor skill in predicting the inter-annual variability of the NEMR. This is mainly due to the inability of the ENSEMBLES models to simulate the positive relationship between ENSO and the NEMR correctly. Copyright (C) 2012 Royal Meteorological Society

The repeated or closely spaced eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors of a matrix are usually very sensitive to a perturbation of the matrix, which makes capturing the behavior of these eigenpairs very difficult. Similar difficulty is encountered in solving the random eigenvalue problem when a matrix with random elements has a set of clustered eigenvalues in its mean. In addition, the methods to solve the random eigenvalue problem often differ in characterizing the problem, which leads to different interpretations of the solution. Thus, the solutions obtained from different methods become mathematically incomparable. These two issues, the difficulty of solving and the non-unique characterization, are addressed here. A different approach is used where instead of tracking a few individual eigenpairs, the corresponding invariant subspace is tracked. The spectral stochastic finite element method is used for analysis, where the polynomial chaos expansion is used to represent the random eigenvalues and eigenvectors. However, the main concept of tracking the invariant subspace remains mostly independent of any such representation. The approach is successfully implemented in response prediction of a system with repeated natural frequencies. It is found that tracking only an invariant subspace could be sufficient to build a modal-based reduced-order model of the system. Copyright (C) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Thermo Acoustic Prime Movers (TAPMs) are being considered as the ideal choice for driving the Pulse Tube Cryocoolers replacing the conventional compressors. The advantages are the absence of moving components and they can be driven by low grade energy as such as fuel, gas, solar energy, waste heat etc. While the development of such TAPMs is in progress in our laboratory, their design and fabrication should be guided by numerical modeling and this may be done by several methods such as solving the energy equation 1], enthalpy flow model 2], CFD 3], etc. We have used CFD technique, since it provides a better insight into the velocity and temperature profiles. The analysis is carried out by varying parameters such as (a) temperature difference across the stack, (b) stack and resonator lengths and (c) different working fluids such as air, nitrogen, argon etc. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data wherever possible and they are in reasonably good agreement with each other. The analysis indicate that (i) larger temperature difference across the stack leads to increased acoustic amplitude, (ii) longer resonator leads to decrease in frequency with lesser amplitude and (iii) there exists an optimal stack length for the best performance of TAPM. These results are presented here.

We consider an inverse elasticity problem in which forces and displacements are known on the boundary and the material property distribution inside the body is to be found. In other words, we need to estimate the distribution of constitutive properties using the finite boundary data sets. Uniqueness of the solution to this problem is proved in the literature only under certain assumptions for a given complete Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Another complication in the numerical solution of this problem is that the number of boundary data sets needed to establish uniqueness is not known even under the restricted cases where uniqueness is proved theoretically. In this paper, we present a numerical technique that can assess the sufficiency of given boundary data sets by computing the rank of a sensitivity matrix that arises in the Gauss-Newton method used to solve the problem. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the method.

A computational tool called ``Directional Diffusion Regulator (DDR)'' is proposed to bring forth real multidimensional physics into the upwind discretization in some numerical schemes of hyperbolic conservation laws. The direction based regulator when used with dimension splitting solvers, is set to moderate the excess multidimensional diffusion and hence cause genuine multidimensional upwinding like effect. The basic idea of this regulator driven method is to retain a full upwind scheme across local discontinuities, with the upwind bias decreasing smoothly to a minimum in the farthest direction. The discontinuous solutions are quantified as gradients and the regulator parameter across a typical finite volume interface or a finite difference interpolation point is formulated based on fractional local maximum gradient in any of the weak solution flow variables (say density, pressure, temperature, Mach number or even wave velocity etc.). DDR is applied to both the non-convective as well as whole unsplit dissipative flux terms of some numerical schemes, mainly of Local Lax-Friedrichs, to solve some benchmark problems describing inviscid compressible flow, shallow water dynamics and magneto-hydrodynamics. The first order solutions consistently improved depending on the extent of grid non-alignment to discontinuities, with the major influence due to regulation of non-convective diffusion. The application is also experimented on schemes such as Roe, Jameson-Schmidt-Turkel and some second order accurate methods. The consistent improvement in accuracy either at moderate or marked levels, for a variety of problems and with increasing grid size, reasonably indicate a scope for DDR as a regular tool to impart genuine multidimensional upwinding effect in a simpler framework. Resistance to therapy limits the effectiveness of drug treatment in many diseases. Drug resistance can be considered as a successful outcome of the bacterial struggle to survive in the hostile environment of a drug-exposed cell. An important mechanism by which bacteria acquire drug resistance is through mutations in the drug target. Drug resistant strains (multi-drug resistant and extensively drug resistant) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are being identified at alarming rates, increasing the global burden of tuberculosis. An understanding of the nature of mutations in different drug targets and how they achieve resistance is therefore important. An objective of this study is to first decipher sequence as well as structural bases for the observed resistance in known drug resistant mutants and then to predict positions in each target that are more prone to acquiring drug resistant mutations. A curated database containing hundreds of mutations in the 38 drug targets of nine major clinical drugs, associated with resistance is studied here. Mutations have been classified into those that occur in the binding site itself, those that occur in residues interacting with the binding site and those that occur in outer zones. Structural models of the wild type and mutant forms of the target proteins have been analysed to seek explanations for reduction in drug binding. Stability analysis of an entire array of 19 mutations at each of the residues for each target has been computed using structural models. Conservation indices of individual residues, binding sites and whole proteins are computed based on sequence conservation analysis of the target proteins. The analyses lead to insights about which positions in the polypeptide chain have a higher propensity to acquire drug resistant mutations. Thus critical insights can be obtained about the effect of mutations on drug binding, in terms of which amino acid positions and therefore which interactions should not be heavily relied upon, which in turn can be translated into guidelines for modifying the existing drugs as well as for designing new drugs. The methodology can serve as a general framework to study drug resistant mutants in other micro-organisms as well.

Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Prediction (GARP) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) with free and open source software (FOSS) - Open Modeller were used to model the probable landslide occurrence points. Environmental layers such as aspect, digital elevation, flow accumulation, flow direction, slope, land cover, compound topographic index and precipitation have been used in modeling. Simulated output of these techniques is validated with the actual landslide occurrence points, which showed 92% (GARP) and 96% (SVM) accuracy considering precipitation in the wettest month and 91% and 94% accuracy considering precipitation in the wettest quarter of the year.

High performance video standards use prediction techniques to achieve high picture quality at low bit rates. The type of prediction decides the bit rates and the image quality. Intra Prediction achieves high video quality with significant reduction in bit rate. This paper presents novel area optimized architecture for Intra prediction of H.264 decoding at HDTV resolution. The architecture has been validated on a Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA based platform and achieved a frame rate of 64 fps. The architecture is based on multi-level memory hierarchy to reduce latency and ensure optimum resources utilization. It removes redundancy by reusing same functional blocks across different modes. The proposed architecture uses only 13% of the total LUTs available on the Xilinx FPGA XC5VLX50T.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been found to be a robust tool to model many non-linear hydrological processes. The present study aims at evaluating the performance of ANN in simulating and predicting ground water levels in the uplands of a tropical coastal riparian wetland. The study involves comparison of two network architectures, Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) trained under five algorithms namely Levenberg Marquardt algorithm, Resilient Back propagation algorithm, BFGS Quasi Newton algorithm, Scaled Conjugate Gradient algorithm, and Fletcher Reeves Conjugate Gradient algorithm by simulating the water levels in a well in the study area. The study is analyzed in two cases-one with four inputs to the networks and two with eight inputs to the networks. The two networks-five algorithms in both the cases are compared to determine the best performing combination that could simulate and predict the process satisfactorily. Ad Hoc (Trial and Error) method is followed in optimizing network structure in all cases. On the whole, it is noticed from the results that the Artificial Neural Networks have simulated and predicted the water levels in the well with fair accuracy. This is evident from low values of Normalized Root Mean Square Error and Relative Root Mean Square Error and high values of Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency Index and Correlation Coefficient (which are taken as the performance measures to calibrate the networks) calculated after the analysis. On comparison of ground water levels predicted with those at the observation well, FFNN trained with Fletcher Reeves Conjugate Gradient algorithm taken four inputs has outperformed all other combinations.

Laminar two-dimensional sudden expansion flow of different nanofluids is studied numerically. The governing equations are solved using stream function-vorticity method. The effect of volume fraction of the nanoparticles and type of nanoparticles on flow behaviour is examined and found significant impact. The flow response to Reynolds number in the presence of nanoparticles is examined. The presence of nanoparticles decreases the flow bifurcation Reynolds number. The size and the reattachment length of the bottom wall recirculation increase with increasing volume fraction and particle density. The effect of volume fraction and density of nanoparticles on friction factor is reported. The bottom wall recirculation strongly respond to the variation in volume faction and type of particles. However, weak response is observed for top wall recirculation.

A combined 3D finite element simulation and experimental study of interaction between a notch and cylindrical voids ahead of it in single edge notch (tension) aluminum single crystal specimens is undertaken in this work. Two lattice orientations are considered in which the notch front is parallel to the crystallographic 10 (1) over bar] direction. The flat surface of the notch coincides with the (010) plane in one orientation and with the (1 (1) over bar1) plane in the other. Three equally spaced cylindrical voids are placed directly ahead of the notch tip. The predicted load-displacement curves, slip traces, lattice rotation and void growth from the finite element analysis are found to be in good agreement with the experimental observations for both the orientations. Finite element results show considerable through-thickness variation in both hydrostatic stress and equivalent plastic slip which, however, depends additionally on the lattice orientation. The through-thickness variation in the above quantities affects the void growth rate and causes it to differ from the center-plane to the free surface of the specimen. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
