Future distribution systems will have to deal with an intensive penetration of distributed energy resources ensuring reliable and secure operation according to the smart grid paradigm. SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is an essential infrastructure for this evolution. This paper proposes a new conceptual design of an intelligent SCADA with a decentralized, flexible, and intelligent approach, adaptive to the context (context awareness). This SCADA model is used to support the energy resource management undertaken by a distribution network operator (DNO). Resource management considers all the involved costs, power flows, and electricity prices, allowing the use of network reconfiguration and load curtailment. Locational Marginal Prices (LMP) are evaluated and used in specific situations to apply Demand Response (DR) programs on a global or a local basis. The paper includes a case study using a 114 bus distribution network and load demand based on real data.

This paper presents a programable perturbation and observation control implementation for a wind generation system and its power electronic converter. The objective of the method in this particular application is to adjust the power delivered to charge a battery to its maximum and allowable value, function of the real values of several parameters and their continuous variation, the most important the wind velocity and the turbine efficiency. Also, to improve the power throughput and to use the turbine and generator marginal zones of operation, an unusual power converter is used, allowing a wide range for the input voltage values. The implemented control is continuously measuring the actual power and looks for a new and powerful operation point. © 2014 IEEE.

The electricity industry throughout the world, which has long been dominated by vertically integrated utilities, has experienced major changes. Deregulation, unbundling, wholesale and retail wheeling, and real-time pricing were abstract concepts a few years ago. Today market forces drive the price of electricity and reduce the net cost through increased competition. As power markets continue to evolve, there is a growing need for advanced modeling approaches. This article addresses the challenge of maximizing the profit (or return) of power producers through the optimization of their share of customers. Power producers have fixed production marginal costs and decide the quantity of energy to sell in both day-ahead markets and a set of target clients, by negotiating bilateral contracts involving a three-rate tariff. Producers sell energy by considering the prices of a reference week and five different types of clients with specific load profiles. They analyze several tariffs and determine the best share of customers, i.e., the share that maximizes profit. © 2014 IEEE.

Ao longo de 40 anos, muitos trabalhos têm vindo a ser desenvolvidos no âmbito do tema da eutrofização e desenvolvimento de biomassa fitoplanctónica. Em todos eles, eram sugeridos factores responsáveis, desde a latitude, luz, temperatura, mistura da coluna de água e os inputs de nutrientes. Toda a controvérsia gerada em torno da eutrofização, levou a que a inércia adoptada em situações de risco induzisse a degradação de muitos sistemas aquáticos. É quando, além da degradação estética, os problemas começam a surgir, que se compreende a necessidade de que surjam medidas de gestão e requalificação das lagoas e bacias hidrográficas. A tendência para a ocorrência de florescências de organismos como cianobactérias, implica a necessidade de maiores cuidados nos usos das massas de água, principalmente ao nível da produção de água para consumo humano e do uso recreativo. Uma boa gestão, implica um conhecimento aprofundado do comportamento destes organismos. Este trabalho, apresenta as respostas de organismos recolhidos em florescências naturais, na Lagoa das Furnas – ilha de S. Miguel (Açores) em meios com diferentes teores de azoto. As diferenças entre os resultados, permitem retirar algumas conclusões sobre as condições preferenciais ao seu desenvolvimento. De um modo geral, as culturas comportaram-se da forma esperada, desenvolvendo-se mais com doses de azoto mais elevadas. Este desenvolvimento foi verificado tanto pelo aumento das partículas ao longo de todo o ensaio, mas também pelos valores de pigmentos registados no fim deste. Por outro lado, o facto do azoto ter sido adicionado sob a forma amoniacal ou de nitratos, permite concluir que os organismos presentes nas florescências preferem assimilar as formas azotadas que impliquem um menor consumo energético. Daí que se tenham verificado desenvolvimentos mais significativos em meios em que foi adicionado azoto amoniacal. O facto de ser tratar de um trabalho baseado nas condições de desenvolvimento de organismos vivos, era de esperar alguma imprevisibilidade dos comportamentos. Sendo assim, será recomendável aprofundar o conhecimento das reacções dos organismos em cultura mista para doses diferentes de azoto, assim como a realização de ensaios em que para uma dose de N fixa, se façam variar as concentrações de P.

The Upper Jurassic evolution of the Lusitanian Basin is shown to be linked to the rifting phase which preceded the separation of Iberia and the Grand Banks. Structural controls on sedimentation include both NNE-SSW trending faults in the Hercynian basement, and contemporaneous movement of salt diapirs. At the beginning of Upper Oxfordian times, the entire basin had been levelled to within a few metres of sea level, so that the freshwater algal marsh and marginal marine facies of the Cabaços and Vale Verde Beds rest on Triassic to Callovian strata. In the latter part of the Upper Oxfordian. carbonate sedimentation continued, with fluctuating salinity lagoons in the north (Pholodomya protei Beds) separated from shallow open marine carbonates in the south (Montejunto Beds) by the Caldas da Rainha diapir-barrier island complex. The commencement of rifting is recorded in the Kimmeridgian by the sudden influx of terrigenous clastics (developed in both fluviatile and deltaic/submarine fan environments) and accelerated depositional rates in excess of 10cm/10 k.yrs in association with contemporaneous faulting along the SE margin of the Arruda sub-basin. The Caldas-Santa Cruz chain of diapiric structures continued to influence the distribution of carbonate and clastic sediments. In the Portlandian, a simpler facies pattern occurs, with fluviatile clastics interfingering to the south with shallow low energy carbonates.

The purpose of this paper is to study the consequences of using the Farrell and Shapiro (1990) sufficient condition for merger approval to sectors in which a downstream horizontal merger may also affect upstream firms. As will be shown below, in some circumstances the sign of the relevant external effect can no longer be established by considering the merger as a sequence of in finitesimal mergers, each corresponding to a marginal change in output.

Onshore, the Piacenzianof the Mondego and Lower Tagus Tertiary basins comprises siliciclastic sediments deposited in shallow marine to continental environments. The outcrops of the deposits are relatively widespread in the Aveiro and Seuibal region. A lithostratigraphic synthesis based on the correlation of geological sections, is presented for the two basins. In general, the Piacenzian sediments display a regressive sucession. The Late Tortonian-Zanclean (?) confined drainage pattern changed at the beginning of Piazencian, to fluvial systems draining to the Atlantic, and capturing the drainage of the inner parts of the Hesperic Meseta. The Piacenzian sedimentary sequence post-dates one of the uprising phases during Neogene compression, recorded by a strong regional unconformity. Some local active faulting - as in Lousa, Rio Maior and Senibal- Pinhal Novo - allowed the local thickening of the sedimentary record. Later compressive tectonism continues to generate reverse faulting and diapiric reactivation, affecting those sediments. Currently, the Piacenzian deposits culminates the marginal piedmonts, widely eroded by the Quaternary fluvial dissection.

In this paper, we consider a mixed market in which a state-owned welfare-maximizing public (domestic) firm competes against a profit-maximizing private (foreign) firm. We suppose that the domestic firm is less eflScient than the foreign firm. However, the domestic firm can lower its marginal costs by conducting cost-reducing R&D investment. We examine the impacts of entry of a foreign firm on decisions upon cost-reducing R&D investment by the domestic firm and how these affect the domestic welfare.

We investigate the effects of trade with a foreign firm and privatization of the domestic pubUc firm on an incentive for the domestic firm to reduce costs by undertaking R&D investment, under demand uncertainty. We suppose that the domestic firm is less efficient than the foreign firm. However, the domestic firm can lower its marginal costs by conducting cost-reducing R&D investment. We examine the impacts of entry of a foreign firm, and the effects of demand uncertainty, on decisions upon cost-reducing R&D investment by the domestic firm and how these affect the domestic welfare.

Se hace un estudio de la interacción de promastigotes de Leishmania donovani con células de exudado peritoneal de ratón (c e p) mediante la influencia de la quimotripsina. La adhesión de los promastigotes a las c e p fue terminal y marginal, y en observaciones hechas a partir de los 10 minutos de enfrentamiento, esta adhesión fue nula hasta los 30 minutos en el grupo tratado, y sólo a las das horas hubo un pequeño incremento (2.4%) con respecto al control. Se observa marcada disminución en todos los parámetro medidos, tales como enlace, penetración, multiplicación intracelular, división de formas flageladas, en el grupo tratado. La quimotripsina favorece la formación de formas intermedias flageladas, heciendose el parásito piriforme y esférico, apareciendo una forma aberrante de extremo anterior cilindrico que semeja a una forma coanoflagelada. Se sospecha que la enzima reduce efectivamente fragmentos proteicos o péptidos, los cuales pueden haber sido tan pequeños como para esconder a otros ligandos relacionados con la adhesión macrófago-parásito.
