Performance on interval timing is often explained by the assumption of an internal clock based on neural counting. According to this account, a neural pacemaker generates pulses, and the number of pulses relating to a physical time interval is recorded by a counter. Thus, the number of accumulated pulses is the internal representation of this interval. Several studies demonstrated that large visual stimuli are perceived to last longer than smaller ones presented for the same duration. The present study was designed to investigate whether nontemporal visual stimulus size directly affects the internal clock. For this purpose, a temporal reproduction task was applied. Sixty participants were randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions with stimulus size being experimentally varied within either the target or the reproduction interval. A direct effect of nontemporal stimulus size on the pacemaker-counter system should become evident irrespective of whether stimulus size was experimentally varied within the target or the reproduction interval. An effect of nontemporal stimulus size on reproduced duration only occurred when stimulus size was varied during the target interval. This finding clearly argues against the notion that nontemporal visual stimulus size directly affects the internal clock. Furthermore, our findings ruled out a decisional bias as a possible cause of the observed differential effect of stimulus size on reproduced duration. Rather the effect of stimulus size appeared to originate from the memory stage of temporal information processing at which the timing signal from the pacemaker-counter component is encoded in reference memory.

So far, most research attempts to explain the mechanism of the action of acupuncture have focused mostly on mechanically-triggered active factors and have produced inconclusive findings. In this study, we investigate whether acupuncture might also involve nonmechanical, nonpsychological active factors originating in the therapist. In 30 individuals, an acupuncture needle was inserted in the acupoint PC6 using a special device without touching the needle. A second device was used to fix the needle rigidly in place, excluding any mechanical transmission of movement from the handle to the needle's tip. Each participant was exposed in random order to a control and a stimulation phase. During the stimulation phase, the free needle's end was held by the therapist to allow the transmission of Qi; during the control phase, it was left untouched. Participants' subjective sensations during the stimulation phase and the control phase were recorded using a questionnaire. Twenty-two of 28 (79%; p = 0.003) test participants believed that they had received stimulation when it had actually been performed, and 26 (93%; p < 0.001) sensed differences between the two experimental phases. Thus, participants were able to sense the transmission of therapeutic Qi in the absence of mechanical or psychological factors.

We investigated the neural mechanisms and the autonomic and cognitive responses associated with visual avoidance behavior in spider phobia. Spider phobic and control participants imagined visiting different forest locations with the possibility of encountering spiders, snakes, or birds (neutral reference category). In each experimental trial, participants saw a picture of a forest location followed by a picture of a spider, snake, or bird, and then rated their personal risk of encountering these animals in this context, as well as their fear. The greater the visual avoidance of spiders that a phobic participant demonstrated (as measured by eye tracking), the higher were her autonomic arousal and neural activity in the amygdala, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and precuneus at picture onset. Visual avoidance of spiders in phobics also went hand in hand with subsequently reduced cognitive risk of encounters. Control participants, in contrast, displayed a positive relationship between gaze duration toward spiders, on the one hand, and autonomic responding, as well as OFC, ACC, and precuneus activity, on the other hand. In addition, they showed reduced encounter risk estimates when they looked longer at the animal pictures. Our data are consistent with the idea that one reason for phobics to avoid phobic information may be grounded in heightened activity in the fear circuit, which signals potential threat. Because of the absence of alternative efficient regulation strategies, visual avoidance may then function to down-regulate cognitive risk evaluations for threatening information about the phobic stimuli. Control participants, in contrast, may be characterized by a different coping style, whereby paying visual attention to potentially threatening information may help them to actively down-regulate cognitive evaluations of risk.

In the current study it is investigated whether peripheral vision can be used to monitor multi-ple moving objects and to detect single-target changes. For this purpose, in Experiment 1, a modified MOT setup with a large projection and a constant-position centroid phase had to be checked first. Classical findings regarding the use of a virtual centroid to track multiple ob-jects and the dependency of tracking accuracy on target speed could be successfully replicat-ed. Thereafter, the main experimental variations regarding the manipulation of to-be-detected target changes could be introduced in Experiment 2. In addition to a button press used for the detection task, gaze behavior was assessed using an integrated eye-tracking system. The anal-ysis of saccadic reaction times in relation to the motor response shows that peripheral vision is naturally used to detect motion and form changes in MOT because the saccade to the target occurred after target-change offset. Furthermore, for changes of comparable task difficulties, motion changes are detected better by peripheral vision than form changes. Findings indicate that capabilities of the visual system (e.g., visual acuity) affect change detection rates and that covert-attention processes may be affected by vision-related aspects like spatial uncertainty. Moreover, it is argued that a centroid-MOT strategy might reduce the amount of saccade-related costs and that eye-tracking seems to be generally valuable to test predictions derived from theories on MOT. Finally, implications for testing covert attention in applied settings are proposed.

In line with current memory theories of a perception-memory continuum along the ventral visual pathway, there is evidence that the specific profile of enhanced memory in special populations (e.g. synaesthesia) is based on increased perceptual sensitivity. The main goal of this study was to test in a more general population, if increased perceptual sensitivity is indeed associated with enhanced memory performance. We measured ERPs in response to simple perceptual stimuli biasing either the ventral or the dorsal route and established if perceptual sensitivity in response to ventrally (but not dorsally) processed stimuli is associated with visual short term memory performance in a change detection task. Preliminary results confirm the hypothesis and strengthen the assumption of a perceptual-memory-continuum.

This paper addresses initial efforts to develop a navigation system for ground vehicles supported by visual feedback from a mini aerial vehicle. A visual-based algorithm computes the ground vehicle pose in the world frame, as well as possible obstacles within the ground vehicle pathway. Relying on that information, a navigation and obstacle avoidance system is used to re-plan the ground vehicle trajectory, ensuring an optimal detour. Finally, some experiments are presented employing a unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and a low cost mini unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Rapid prototyping environments can speed up the research of visual control algorithms. We have designed and implemented a software framework for fast prototyping of visual control algorithms for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV). We have applied a combination of a proxy-based network communication architecture and a custom Application Programming Interface. This allows multiple experimental configurations, like drone swarms or distributed processing of a drone’s video stream. Currently, the framework supports a low-cost MAV: the Parrot AR.Drone. Real tests have been performed on this platform and the results show comparatively low figures of the extra communication delay introduced by the framework, while adding new functionalities and flexibility to the selected drone. In this research, the halved and tabled traditional timber scarf joint is analyzed. This joint consists in two end joint pieces usually subjected to tension. Initially, the study is discussed from an experimental point of view. In this way, 3 critical cross-sections are established (section of the notch, section of the horizontal plane and reduced section) and mechanical tests are performed to achieve the failure on each of critical sections by changing the geometry of the joint. The study is completed by developing a finite element model which allows verify experimental results and extend the analysis to other geometries. This model has to simulate the real behavior of the material which is being studied, so mechanical tests are performed to obtain the elastic constants and the coefficients of friction of the material. In the reduced section, an abrupt decrease of the effective cross-section takes place, and this effect is also experimentally analyzed. These tests indicate that a crack is initiated before the bending-tension failure occurs in the reduced section. The test material consists of wood of Pinus sylvestris L. coming from the “Valsaín´s Sawmill” (Segovia) with “premium quality” according to the nonstructural wood visual classification of sawmill. It is observed that initiation of a crack, in the mortise (bottom of reduced section), and shear stress concentration, at the initial part of the heel (beginning of horizontal plane), completely determine the mechanical behaviour of the joint, resulting in 3 failure modes: local compression failure in the section of the notch, shear failure in the horizontal plane, and failure of stresses concentration, mainly perpendicular to the grain tension, at the bottom of reduced section. The geometric optimization is obtained for halved and tabled traditional scarf joint, when the joint has made with similar properties of wood than tested specimens, for any height and width of the cross-section. It is considered the failure due to the initiation of a crack in reduced section, by applying a correction coefficient into the usual equation used to design the members subjected to both tension and bending. Therefore, it is possible to obtain, analytically, the design conditions to be met of the 3 critical cross-sections. According to the theoretical optimization, the tension strength of complete cross-section is reduced until 14%, when using this type of joint. The experimental optimization indicates even a greater reduction, until 6%. En el presente trabajo de investigación se analiza el comportamiento mecánico de las uniones tradicionales de empalme de llave, que consisten en dos piezas unidas por sus testas transmitiéndose entre ellas principalmente un esfuerzo de tracción. Inicialmente, el estudio se aborda desde un punto de vista experimental. De este modo, se establecen las 3 secciones críticas o de estudio (sección del encaje, sección rasante del cogote y sección reducida) y se realizan ensayos mecánicos, variando la geometría de la unión, para alcanzar la rotura en cada una de ellas. Se completa el estudio mediante la elaboración de un modelo por elementos finitos que permite verificar los resultados experimentales y ampliar el análisis a otras geometrías. Este modelo debe simular el comportamiento real del material objeto de estudio, por lo que se realizan ensayos para obtener las constantes elásticas y los coeficientes de rozamiento del mismo. También se analiza, experimentalmente, el efecto entalladura que reduce bruscamente la sección completa del tirante, estableciendo que el fallo por flexotracción en la sección reducida de la pieza, no llega a producirse por el inicio previo de una grieta. El material de ensayo consiste en madera de Pinus sylvestris L. (pino silvestre) procedente del Aserradero de Valsaín (Segovia) y de calidad “Extra” o “Primera” según la clasificación visual no estructural del aserradero. Se observa que el inicio de una grieta en la mortaja del rediente y la concentración de tensiones tangenciales en la parte inicial del cogote, determinan completamente el comportamiento mecánico de la unión, dando lugar a 3 modos distintos de rotura: fallo por compresión en la sección del encaje, fallo por cortante en la sección rasante y fallo por concentración de tensiones, principalmente tracciones perpendiculares, en el rebaje de la sección reducida. Se consigue optimizar geométricamente cualquier empalme de llave confeccionado con madera de características similares a la ensayada, para cualquier valor de la altura y de la anchura de la sección. Se considera el agotamiento en la sección reducida causado por el inicio de grieta, mediante la aplicación de un coeficiente corrector en la expresión habitual de agotamiento por flexotracción, en consecuencia, finalmente es posible obtener, de modo analítico, un valor del índice de agotamiento en cada una de las 3 secciones de estudio. La optimización teórica del empalme de llave indica que la capacidad resistente del tirante bruto se reduce al 14%, cuando se coloca este tipo de unión tradicional. Experimentalmente se obtiene, que, para la sección ensayada, la capacidad resistente del tirante bruto se reduce todavía más, llegando al 6%.

In living bodies, the correct perceptual representation of size constancy requires that an object's size appear the same when it changes its location with respect to the observer. At the same time, it is necessary that objects at different locations appear to be the same size if they are. In order to do that, the perceptual system must recover from the stimuli impinging on the individual, from the light falling on the retina, a representation of the relative sizes of objects in the environment. Moreover, at the same time, image perception is related to another type of phenomena. It corresponds to the well known perceptual illusions. To analyze this facts, we propose a system based on a particular arrays of receptive points composed by optical fibers and dummy fibers. The structure is based on the first layers of the mammalians primary visual cortex. At that part of the brain, the neurons located at certain columns, respond to particular directions. This orientation changes in a systematic way as one moves across the cortical surface. In our case, the signals from the above-mentioned array are analyzed and information concerning orientation and size of a particular line is obtained. With this system, the Muelle-Lyer illusion has been studied and some rules to interpret why equal length objects give rise to different interpretations are presented.

Quality assessment is a key factor for stereoscopic 3D video content as some observers are affected by visual discomfort in the eye when viewing 3D video, especially when combining positive and negative parallax with fast motion. In this paper, we propose techniques to assess objective quality related to motion and depth maps, which facilitate depth perception analysis. Subjective tests were carried out in order to understand the source of the problem. Motion is an important feature affecting 3D experience but also often the cause of visual discomfort. The automatic algorithm developed tries to quantify the impact on viewer experience when common cases of discomfort occur, such as high-motion sequences, scene changes with abrupt parallax changes, or complete absence of stereoscopy, with a goal of preventing the viewer from having a bad stereoscopic experience.

To perceive a coherent environment, incomplete or overlapping visual forms must be integrated into meaningful coherent percepts, a process referred to as ?Gestalt? formation or perceptual completion. Increasing evidence suggests that this process engages oscillatory neuronal activity in a distributed neuronal assembly. A separate line of evidence suggests that Gestalt formation requires top-down feedback from higher order brain regions to early visual cortex. Here we combine magnetoencephalography (MEG) and effective connectivity analysis in the frequency domain to specifically address the effective coupling between sources of oscillatory brain activity during Gestalt formation. We demonstrate that perceptual completion of two-tone ?Mooney? faces induces increased gamma frequency band power (55?71 Hz) in human early visual, fusiform and parietal cortices. Within this distributed neuronal assembly fusiform and parietal gamma oscillators are coupled by forward and backward connectivity during Mooney face perception, indicating reciprocal influences of gamma activity between these higher order visual brain regions. Critically, gamma band oscillations in early visual cortex are modulated by top-down feedback connectivity from both fusiform and parietal cortices. Thus, we provide a mechanistic account of Gestalt perception in which gamma oscillations in feature sensitive and spatial attention-relevant brain regions reciprocally drive one another and convey global stimulus aspects to local processing units at low levels of the sensory hierarchy by top-down feedback. Our data therefore support the notion of inverse hierarchical processing within the visual system underlying awareness of coherent percepts.

Wireless teleoperation of field robots for maintenance, inspection and rescue missions is often performed in environments with low wireless connectivity, caused by signal losses from the environment and distance from the wireless transmitters. Various studies from the literature have addressed these problems with time-delay robust control systems and multi-hop wireless relay networks. However, such approaches do not solve the issue of how to present wireless data to the operator to avoid losing control of the robot. Despite the fact that teleoperation for maintenance often already involves haptic devices, no studies look at the possibility of using this existing feedback to aid operators in navigating within areas of variable wireless connectivity. We propose a method to incorporate haptic information into the velocity control of an omnidirectional robot to augment the operators perception of wireless signal strength in the remote environment. In this paper we introduce a mapping between wireless signal strength from multiple receivers to the force feedback of a 6 Degree of Freedom haptic master and evaluate the proposed approach using experimental data and randomly generated wireless maps

La finalidad de esta investigación se enmarca dentro de los estudios sobre hormigones de presas llevados a cabo en el Laboratorio Central de Estructuras y Materiales del CEDEX. En España se han diagnosticado 18 obras afectadas tanto por la reacción álcali-sílice de tipo rápido como por la de tipo lento. Dos de de las obras, fabricadas con áridos graníticos, no presentan signos de deterioro pero en laboratorio se han hallado productos expansivos. En las 16 presas españolas restantes, el hormigón de 10 de ellas estaba fabricado con áridos graníticos, de las cuales, 7 están afectadas por la reacción de tipo lento. Sin embargo, en las clasificaciones internacionales de las rocas potencialmente reactivas se establece habitualmente que las rocas graníticas son inocuas o de reactividad muy baja. En los casos puntuales encontrados en la literatura, la reactividad de este tipo de áridos se encuentra frecuentemente asociada al cuarzo microcristalino que contienen y ocasionalmente se asocia esta reactividad también al cuarzo deformado y/o microfisurado. En la tesis doctoral de Víctor Daniel Lanza Fernández, también realizada en el CEDEX, se han tratado los áridos de reacción rápida, dando una descripción detallada de los componentes que intervienen en este tipo de reacción y presentando un ensayo eficaz para su detección en el laboratorio. La investigación desarrollada en la presente tesis doctoral se ha centrado en los áridos de reacción lenta, mucho menos estudiados. A partir del estudio bibliográfico realizado sobre este tipo de reacción se ha detectado ciertas lagunas, basadas principalmente en la falta de un método de detección en el laboratorio para los áridos de reacción lenta. No se ha encontrado un procedimiento en el estudio petrográfico que sea fiable y cuantificable para este tipo de áridos. El ensayo acelerado de barras de mortero, que para los áridos de reacción rápida supone un método rápido y fiable, falla en la detección de los áridos de reacción lenta al aplicar los límites normalizados. Si bien en publicaciones recientes se ha propuesto la posibilidad de ampliar el tiempo de tratamiento hasta los 90 días, la duración del ensayo es más larga de lo deseado. Para resolver estas lagunas, se han tomado áridos de obras reales afectadas por la reacción álcali-sílice (en algún caso también de las canteras de donde se extrajeron los áridos para la ejecución), con lo que la reactividad de estos áridos queda demostrada por su comportamiento en obra. Al objeto de aumentar la muestra de ensayo y utilizar también áridos inocuos, se han tomado muestras de canteras, tanto en uso como abandonadas. Sobre estos áridos se ha realizado una caracterización completa con los ensayos actualmente disponibles para el estudio de su reactividad con los álcalis del cemento: estudio petrográfico, ensayo acelerado de barras de mortero y Gel-Pat modificado. En la investigación se ha desarrollado una metodología de tinción de geles álcali-sílice para la cuantificación de los mismos en el interior de las barras de mortero. Se ha relacionado el volumen de gel generado en la reacción con la expansión producida, tanto para áridos lentos, como rápidos, estableciendo analogías y diferencias en el comportamiento de ambos. La cuantificación de este tipo de compuestos realizada en las barras de mortero, abre la posibilidad de estudiar la capacidad expansiva que presentan en testigos de hormigón de obras afectadas. Este dato podría ser una herramienta importante para el desarrollo de modelos matemáticos que puedan predecir el futuro comportamiento de las estructuras afectadas por la reacción álcali-sílice. La tinción ha sido asimismo utilizada para establecer un método de detección de áridos reactivos basado en el ensayo de Gel-Pat modificado. La metodología de detección propuesta para estos áridos es cuantitativa y proporciona los resultados en 14 días, suponiendo una ventaja importante sobre los métodos actuales, que permiten detectarlos en 90 días (de forma orientativa en 56 días). This research is part of the studies on durability of concrete dams carried out in the Laboratorio Central de Estructuras y Materiales of CEDEX during the last years. At the present time, 18 public works affected by alkali-silica reaction have been diagnosed in Spain. In 12 of them the concrete was mixed with granitic aggregates, 7 of which were damaged by the slow alkali-silica reaction, 3 by the rapid alkali-silica reaction and in the other 2 cases, although there was no visual evidence of the reaction in field, the laboratory tests showed the presence of expansive products inside the concrete. However, in the international classifications of potentially reactive aggregates granitic rocks are pointed out as innocuous or as low reactivity and usually their reactivity is attributed to the presence of microcrystalline quartz and occasionally with the strained and microcracked quartz. The rapid reactive aggregates were deeply studied in a previous research (Víctor Daniel Lanza’s Thesis) also carried out in CEDEX. In this research, a detailed description of the components involved in the rapid alkali-silica reaction was given. Also, a fast method to detect them in the laboratory was developed. The research of the present PhD Thesis is focused in the slow-reactive aggregates, much less studied. The state of the art has shown some gaps in the knowledge about this reaction, mainly the absence of a reliable method to detect slow-reactive aggregates. On one side, there is no systematic and quantitative petrographic test for these aggregates. On the other side, the accelerated mortar bar test has been proved to be effective to detect rapid reactive aggregates but the standard limits fail in the detection of the slowreactive aggregates. In recent investigations it has been proposed extending the test until 90 days, but this period is considered too long. In this research, aggregates taken from affected structures have been used in the test, so their reactivity has been shown in practice. With the aim of increasing the number of samples aggregates from quarries have been also used. A method to stain alkali-silica gels has been applied to mortar bars, thereby quantifying the volume of gel generated inside. This volume has been related to the expansion of the bars, both for rapid for slow reactive aggregates, establishing similarities and differences. The quantification of the gel volume, applied to concrete cores extracted from affected structures, could be an important tool in mathematical models to predict the future behaviour of the structures affected by the alkali-silica reaction. The staining method has been also used to develop a method to detect slow reactive aggregates, based on the optimised Gel-Pat test, obtaining results in 14 days. This represents a major improvement compared to the actual methods (accelerated mortar bar test) which give an indicative value of reactivity at 56 days, and a final result at 90 days.

The hot-spot phenomenon is a relatively frequent problem occurring in current photovoltaic generators. It entails both a risk for the photovoltaic module’s lifetime and a decrease in its operational efficiency. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of widely accepted procedures for dealing with them in practice. This paper presents the IES–UPM observations on 200 affected photovoltaic modules. Visual and infrared inspection, as well as electroluminescence, peak power rating and operating voltage tests have been carried out. Thermography under steady state conditions and photovoltaic module operating voltage, both at normal photovoltaic system operating conditions, are the selected methods to deal in practice with hot-spots. The temperature difference between the hot-spot and its surroundings, and the operating voltage differences between affected and non-affected photovoltaic modules are the base for establishing defective criteria, at the lights of both lifetime and operating efficiency considerations. Hot-spots temperature gradients larger than 20 °C, in any case, and larger than 10 °C when, at the same time, voltage operating losses are larger than the allowable power losses fixed at the photovoltaic module warranties, are proposed as rejecting conditions for routine inspections under contractual frameworks. The upper threshold of 20 °C is deduced for temperate climates from the basic criterion of keeping absolute hot-spot temperatures below 20 °C.
